Connecticut’s daily COVID positivity rate reached 21.5 percent Monday, setting another record, as the highly

Connecticut launches $34M relief program for essential workers By Keith Phaneuf The Connecticut Mirror

New state Comptroller Natalie Braswell and the leaders of the General Assembly’s Labor Committee

launched a $34 million relief program Monday for essential workers affected by the coronavirus. The program, which is accepting applications through

July 20, covers lost wages, out-of-pocket medical expenses and burial costs tied to COVID-19 and incurred between March 10, 2020 and July 20, 2021. “Frontline workers made immense sacrifices to keep our state functioning during the pandemic,” said Braswell, who became the state’s chief fiscal guardian last week when Comptroller Kevin P. Lembo retired due to illness. “This relief program represents an opportunity to return the favor, offering critical financial assistance to

workers who contracted COVID-19.” The program is open to hospital workers, first-responders, grocery store workers, bus drivers, corrections employees and others who could not work remotely and maintained vital services during the pandemic. Full details are available online at ctessentialworkerrelief.org. The relief effort was sparked by surging caseloads in the state’s Workers Compensation program, which hovered around 200,000 during the worst of the pandemic,

according to Rep. Robyn Porter, D-New Haven, and Sen. Julie Kushner, D-Danbury, co-chairwomen of the Labor and Public Employees Committee. Lawmakers agreed to use $34 million from last fiscal year’s budget surplus to launch the relief program. And while both Porter and Kushner said they’re confident it will help thousands of households, they also said it can’t alleviate all of the fiscal distress the coronavirus placed on these households. “Is it enough? Absolutely not,” Porter said. “But a little bit goes a long way.” “We posted signs of thanks, called essential workers ‘heroes’ – I’m sure it was appreciated, but it simply wasn’t enough,” Kushner said. Essential workers can apply to recover a portion of the wages they lost.

There are no income eligibility requirements.

Benefits will be provided on a first-come-first-served basis, and both Porter and Kushner conceded the program funds might be exhausted before all eligible applicants receive some relief.

But lawmakers said they hope that highly paid essential workers — such as a hospital surgeon — would not seek assistance unless they are in financial distress.

The benefit for replacing lost wages is capped at $1,446, which Braswell said reflects

“I would hope that the people who really don’t need it won’t apply,” Porter said.

Obituaries Ronald L. Cox, Sr.

Robert “Bob” Story

KENSINGTON- Ronald L. Cox, Sr., 86, of Kensington, passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 26, 2021. He was born in Terryville, CT, on December 20, 1935, a son of the late Sarah and Delmer Cox. Ron enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1953 to 1956 and was employed as a manager for the A&P food chain for 45 years. He then worked as a custodian for the Town of Berlin at Emma Hart Willard School of Berlin for 15 years before his retirement. He was a parishioner of St. Paul Church. Ron loved to be with his family - especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed fastpitch softball of which he was inducted into the Connecticut Hall of Fame. Ron was an avid New York Yankees fan. Ron is survived by a son, Ronald L. Cox, Jr., of Wallingford, a daughter in law, Marsha Hillman of Wallingford, 3 grandchildren: Katie, Charlotte and Adam Cox, and several nieces and nephews. Ron was pre-deceased

BERLIN- A legend left us on New Years’ Eve. He served his country, helped his friends, and supported the community. He was an attentive husband and father to a wife, three daughters and a son, he helped all those around him, and somehow found time to build the best damn garage in town. The irrepressible Robert A. Story drew his last breath on December 31, 2021, surrounded by family. He leaves a loving and devoted family and a legacy of service to friends and community. Most days Bob could be found at Story Brothers, Inc., building his business. He treated his employees as family, providing meals and sometimes his own homemade delicacies. He took a personal interest in his customers and gave them his utmost respect. He knew how to get things done. Bob was an attentive and loving grandfather to his six grandchildren. He coached his grandsons to World Soapbox and Pinewood Derby finals, fishing, swimming, earning scout badges, building legos, cookouts, driving lessons and general tomfoolery. (Properly motivated he could be convinced to moon a camera). Bob was a generous man. No matter what the

Everyone went directly to St. Paul Church, 467 Alling Street, Kensington, on Friday, December 31, 2021, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Internment took place at St Mary’s Cemetery on Monday, January 3, 2022. occasion, there was always an extra welcoming seat at the Story family dinner table. Bob loved a good party. He and Sandy loved to travel. They travelled the world together. With Bob, all you needed was a tuxedo and a passport. An eternal optimist and racing enthusiast, Bob would greet any setback by quoting Richard Petty and saying “Don’t worry, we’ll get ‘em next Sunday”. To all who knew him well, Bob was larger than life, and the essence of what he did and what he taught survives him and thrives. Robert “Bob” Story, 80, of Kensington, husband of Sandra “Sandy” (Barillaro) Story, passed away peacefully Friday, December 31, 2021, at the Hospital of Central CT in New Britain. A native and former New Britain resident, son of the late Alexander and Mary

(Karvoski) Story, Bob was a graduate of New Britain High School Class of 1959 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from The University of Hartford. Bob served in the US Army Reserve. He lived in Kensington since 1967. He owned and operated Story Brothers Auto in New Britain since 1960. He was a member of St. Paul’s Church in Kensington. Besides his wife Sandy, he leaves a son, Emanuel “Manny” Story of Berlin; three daughters, Kristine Story; Laura Martin and her husband Jonathan; and Kathryn Spilka and her husband Dean, all of Berlin; six grandsons, Zachary, Andrew and Nicholas Martin; and Samuel, Jack and Robert Trent Spilka. He was predeceased by a sister, Lucille Michaud. A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, January 7, 2022, at 10 a.m., directly at St. Paul’s Church, 479 Alling Street, Kensington, CT 06037. Burial will follow in South Burying Ground, Berlin. Calling hours are Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m., at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain. Esmeralda “Annie” O’ Farrill is a fitness trainer and CrossFit coach at the Meriden YMCA . She is also a student at Southern Connecticut State University studying sports science and nutrition. O’ Farrill, who was born in Puerto Rico, said food is a very cultural thing. “You cannot tell a person who grew up eating bread and rice to not eat bread and rice, because that’s their culture, that’s how they relate,” she said. She explained that it is better not to give up on foods but to have a limited amount, depending on an individual’s goal.

Exercise apps and videos can help guide people in a good direction, she said. Nancy Payne, of Meriden, joined the YMCA in 2014. She said she was one of those people who chose New Year's resolutions but didn’t manage them properly. When it comes to fitness and nutrition, she said she has been able to gain healthier habits. “It's a learning curve,” said Payne. When she joined the YMCA, she was new to Meriden and wanted to be involved in the community. So she joined O’ Farrill’s classes, where the instructor told clients about her experience being overweight. This caught Payne’s attention and she ended up hiring O’ Farrill as her personal trainer.

“Doing that and following what she was telling me, I was able to lose some of my weight,” said Payne.

One of the things that help people who want to start a healthier lifestyle is finding a workout partner or taking a group class where they can meet people with similar goals, he said.

Welcome to On The Menu.

Carrie Marquardt said exercising is important but it is better for people to do an exercise they enjoy. “If you like to walk, by all means you should walk, you shouldn’t run if you don’t want to run,” the YMCA health & wellness director said. “You have to find something that you enjoy doing, that you will stick with.”

Part of their goal with clients is to have them meet with a trainer to help them set up an individualized plan. “You want to find something that fits you personally,” McDowell said.

Social media plays a big role in body image, and O’ Farrill said people should be careful not to believe everything they see online, as influencers are normally just trying to sell a product.

Michael McDowell, general manager at Club 24 fitness center in Meriden, said one of the most important aspects of health is nutrition, which is why his gym offers help with that.
