New group aims to aid business community

The past year was a big one for business growth in Berlin, as 35 ribbon-cuttings took place in town.

If the new enterprise Business Connections of Berlin lives up to its promise, the scissors will continue clicking in 2023 and beyond.

Business Connections of Berlin aims to help local businesses connect and grow utilizing networking,

marketing and educational opportunities.

Realtor Bob Canto conceived of the group after souring on the Chamber of Commerce during the pandemic.

“We felt that the Chamber wasn’t doing what we wanted it to," Canto said. "But I feel like we’re going in different directions.”

Election season is over; now it’s time to legislate

Citizen report

Berlin’s hometown state representatives, Republican Donna Veach and Democrat Jack Fazzino took their oaths-of-office on Jan. 4. Fazzino, a firstterm legislator, represents the 83rd House District, while Veach begins her second full term representing the 30th.

In a social media post last week, Fazzino stated: “Very hard to put today into words, but I’ll just say how lucky I am to represent my home district and Meriden/Berlin/Cheshire in the General Assembly. And even more lucky to have some great people with me. Let’s work hard, together.”

Veach also is eager to get to work, saying in a press release: "I am excited to be embarking on a new year with a whole wealth of knowledge and experience I gained over my last term and I'm eager to pair that experience with my professional experience to work on behalf of the residents not just in my district, but across Connecticut."

Veach and Fazzino also serve on Berlin’s Town Council. Read more about the local lawmakers inside.

Berlin library, police department roll out community book club

Press Release

Join Officer Aimee Krzykowski and Librarian Carrie Tyszka for a new quarterly book discussion series at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library. The first in the series will take place Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. with a discussion of “At the Edge of the Haight,” by Katherine Seligman. This partnership between the Berlin Police Department and the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library will provide an opportunity for our community members to get to know their police officers in a new way, through discussion of both fiction and non-fiction books.

“Books have a wonderful way of connecting people and allowing us to see our shared humanity,” Library Director Kim McNally said.

Chief of Police Matthew J. McNally stated, “I am very excited for this partnership initiative and it all really

stems from a quote I once read by author and philanthropist John Green. He said, ‘Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.’ I believe that the goal of this reading partnership with our library, our community and our police will prove that Green’s quote is correct.”

“One of the areas that the relationship between community and the police has fallen short is in the area of understanding,” said the chief, “and what better way to find common ground and a place to come together, other than the public library.”

State Rep. Donna Veach (R-30) took the oath-of-office on Jan. 4, beginning her second full term representing the 30th General Assembly District, which includes the towns of Berlin and Southington.

"Due to the pandemic all of the first-term traditions that surround the first day of session were quite different, so having the opportunity to experience it for the first time this session was special. I had goosebumps," said Veach.

"I am excited to be embarking on a new year with a whole wealth of knowledge and experience I gained over my last term and I'm eager to pair that experience with my professional experience to work on behalf of the residents not just in my district, but across Connecticut."

Connecticut’s legislature is part-time, with regular sessions held from January to June in odd-numbered years, and from February to May in even-numbered years.

For the 2023-2024 legislative session, Veach has been named Ranking Member of the Internship Committee by House Republican Leader Vincent Candelora.

The purpose of the Internship Committee is to acquaint college students with both the formal and informal aspects of the legislative process through first-hand experience in the legislative offices. Veach will also serve as a member of the Environment, Judiciary, and Finance committees.

State Rep. Donna Veach can be reached at donna.veach@housegop.ct.gov and 860-2408700.

“At the Edge of the Haight” is the story of a young homeless woman who witnesses a murder. This, in turn, threatens her already precarious existence and pressures her to return to her family in tech-driven, racetorn San Francisco. The novel won the 2019 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction. Copies are available at the library.

Author Barbara Kingsolver gave “At the Edge of the Haight” a glowing

review, writing, “What a read this is, right from its startling opening scene. But even more than plot, it’s the richly layered details that drive home a lightning bolt of empathy. To read ‘At the Edge of the Haight’ is to live inside the everyday terror and longings of a world that most of us manage not to see, even if we walk past it on sidewalks every day.”

Those interested in attending the Jan. 17 discussion are asked to contact the library. This discussion kicks off the library’s “Fall in Love with Reading Again” initiative, literary related programming for adults.

Y child care programs available

The Meriden-New BritainBerlin YMCA is excited to announce the opening of our new infant, toddler and preschool care programs in Berlin. Our Little Huskies program opened recently at Hubbard Elementary School. The Little Spartans program

at McGee Middle School is scheduled to open mid-January. Both programs include a play-based learning environment, and lessons are tailored to meet the individual needs of the children.

The Meriden-New BritainBerlin YMCA’s high quality, affordable child care pro-

grams follow the Creative Curriculum and use the TeachingStrategies’ Tadpoles communication system to communicate with parents to show them their child’s daily activities and photos.

Care4Kids is accepted. “The collaboration with the Berlin Public Schools has been wonderful,” said Tina Valentin, director of Child Care Operations at the Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA. “This is a great opportunity for families to become part of the BPS school community while their children are in YMCA child care. The school staff have been very welcoming and are already working together with our team.”

Freshman legislator hits the ground running

Jonathan “Jack” Fazzino, the Berlin Democrat now representing the 83rd House District, which includes parts of Meriden, Berlin and Cheshire, learned his legislative committee assignments and leadership roles last week.

Fazzino was appointed as an assistant majority leader. He also was named vice chair of the legislature’s Commerce Committee as well as a member of its General Law and Public Safety and Security committees.

Fazzino, who is employed as an attorney and also serves on the Berlin Town Council, prevailed last November over Meriden Republican Lou Arata in a close contest for the 83rd District seat.

Fazzino said a message he heard during last week’s swearing-in ceremony that was communicated by House majority and minority party leaders was to respect the legislative process and to strive to reach bipartisan consensus.

Fazzino said small businesses were an important focus of his campaign, as such the freshman legislator “definitely wanted to do” what he could to be named to the Commerce Committee, which he noted has a reputation for being bipartisan.

As the committee’s vice chairman, Fazzino said he’s already begun discussions with its House chairman around long-term planning for the state. “We both agree there’s more we can do to expand opportunities,” Fazzino, noting all three communities that make up the 83rd district are looking to bolster economic development.

Public safety is another “essential issue ” for those communities, Fazzino said. “We want safe streets and safe neighborhoods. We have to make sure we’re supporting our law enforcement, our first responders, to make sure they have tools at their disposal,” Fazzino said, describing the issue of providing police support and protection from harm as things he hopes to address.

Retention of police officers is a legislative topic that Fazzino said he’s already had some discussions around.

“That’s something I really want to focus on, ” Fazzino said, noting he brings the local Berlin perspective and is beginning to develop a relationship with Meriden police officials.

“We definitely need a lot of support on that front. We want to cut down on turnover,” Fazzino said.

Fazzino said coming from a background in local government he knows “how important it is to develop relationships with your advocates at the state and federal levels.”

“I’ve made it a priority to develop a good working relationship with local officials in Meriden, Berlin and Cheshire,” Fazzino said, adding his goal is to “keep the lines of communication going.” He encouraged constituents and local leaders to reach out with their items of concern by email at jack.fazzino@cga.ct.gov.

God, church and family were most important to her. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Meriden, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and Reader. She was a member of the choir, and, in the past, was a vocal and instrumental soloist, singing for weddings and other occasions.

Dee was a member of the Berlin VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post 10732 where she served as chaplain, and the Berlin Senior Center, where she volunteered as a bingo caller. Dee was employed by the Berlin Board of Education as a paraprofessional at the Berlin High School, in special education. Dee was a devoted wife, mother, and grandma. She lovingly cared for her granddaughters, who were the lights of her life. Her favorite name, after “mom”, was “grandma”. She loved her family with a passion, and was always there for them. She loved writing poetry, and a collection of her poems is copyrighted. Dee loved times with family, helping others, golf, fishing, reading, lunch with friends, Bingo, UCONN Women’s Basketball, Red Sox, and the New England

Patriots. Dee is survived by and will be missed by her son, Timothy Knopf; granddaughters, Cassandra and Melinda Knopf; sisters-in-law Donna Lee Dranginis of Sedona, AZ and Barbara Bendzinski of Newington; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her parents and husband, Dee was predeceased by brothers John and Edmund Dranginis; sisters-inlaw Leah Dranginis and Irene Knopf; brotherin-law, Richard Knopf; and mother-in-law, Lydia Knopf.

Honoring her wishes, there will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023 at 10 AM at St. John Lutheran Church, Meriden. Burial will follow at Maple Cemetery, Berlin. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 520 Paddock Ave., Meriden, CT 06450; the Berlin Senior Center, 33 Colonial Dr., Berlin, CT 06037; or Foodshare. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Please share a memory of Dee with the family in the online guest book @ www. ericksonhansen.com

Conn. Walmart stores going bagless

Press Release

As of July 2021, Connecticut state law banned single-use plastic bags. Now, Walmart is taking it a step further by eliminating all single-use plastic and paper bags at checkouts across the state beginning Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Delivery will continue to utilize paper bags, and stores will continue providing singleuse bags in areas that prevent food contamination or as required by law.

“Eliminating single-use bags in Connecticut is part of our effort to reduce waste,” said Jane Ewing, senior vice president of Walmart Sustainability. “Our customers want to be engaged on this journey, and we remain committed to making the sustainable choice the everyday choice.”

To make the transition easier for its customers, Walmart will continue to offer a wide array of reusable bags and containers that can be found throughout stores and at checkout areas for purchase. Stores have added signing, social posts on store Facebook pages, and messaging on the Walmart App to remind customers of the upcoming changes. Additionally, Walmart makes it easy for customers to recycle end-of-life plastic and reusable bags by providing recycling containers in the vestibule area.

As of June 2022, Walmart has eliminated paper and plastic bags in Canada and Mexico, and Vermont, Maine and New Jersey in the U.S. Beginning this month, Walmart will expand these efforts to include bagless stores in New York and Colorado, as well as Connecticut.
