Longtime dispatcher honored
LOCAL ARTS SCENE
Berlin Police Department dispatcher Thomas Farr was called upon to do a great deal of work in late 2021, and his efforts did not go unnoticed. He was named Farr the Berlin PD’s “Employee of the Quarter” for the fourth quarter of 2021.
Photography by Berlin resident Dan Butler will be on display at Provision State Coffee, 848 Farmington Ave., next month. The exhibit opens Saturday, Feb. 5, and runs through Saturday, Feb. 26. A meet and greet with the photographer will take place on Feb. 5, 9 a.m. to noon. The exhibit features landscape photographs taken by Butler along the Connecticut River; at the Nuble Lighthouse in York, Maine; and at Topsail Beach, North Carolina, as well as aerial shots of Hartford and Middletown. Provision State Coffee is open Tuesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This spring, one year after breaking ground, the Connecticut Gold Star Families Memorial Monument will be dedicated. A celebration marking the structure’s completion is scheduled for Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Located at Veterans Memorial Park in Berlin, the monument honors Gold Star Families and the legacy of their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States military. A 2021 press release from the Berlin Veterans Commission states, “[T]he

One side bears the words: Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives who have sacrificed a Loved One for our Freedom. The other side tells a story through the four granite panels: Homeland, Family, Patriot, and Sacrifice. The scenes on each panel reflect Connecticut’s Gold Star Families and their fallen heroes. “At the center of this tribute is the most distinct feature of the monument, the cut out which represents the loved one who paid the ultimate See Gold Star, A5

Letters to the Editor
The application before Planning and Zoning for development at 1676 Berlin Turnpike, Berlin Bungalows, runs contrary to the goals, policies and values mandated in Berlin’s Plan of Conservation and Development and thus, should not be approved. The plan stresses the importance in deciding what development should occur when land is available. It emphasizes the limited amount of such land, and stresses that a serious analysis be conducted prior to approval, as the land will not be available again once a decision to build is made. The outcome not only affects the visual appeal of an area, town services and schools, but, more importantly, impacts the tax base. Briefly, the proposed location raises a number of issues. This land is situated on
these residential units far outweigh any gain. To forego the opportunity to use this land in the most profitable way lacks the tenets of good planning and development. We need to make wise decisions now for long term growth.
Residential development prevents the achievement of the strategic goal of growing businesses on the Turnpike and building a strong commercial corridor. The focus must be on the bigger picture.
Fed up
The frequency of exit traffic onto the Turnpike by residents will cause further delay in traffic flow and create potential safety issues. Lastly, the plot size — 1.899 acres – is not sufficient for the 20 units (16 singles and two duplexes). Residents can be fined for snow, ice violations The Public Works Department reminds residents of the local ordinances pertaining to the removal of ice and snow from public roadways : Property owners are not allowed to shovel, throw or plow ice and snow from private property into, or across, a public street.
As noted in the Town of Berlin Municipal Code, these actions are subject to a written warning and/or $100 fine. Residents are advised that they are responsible to clear snow and ice from any public sidewalk fronting their property. Sidewalks are to be cleared
and/or sanded within 24 hours of the completion of street plowing operations. It is the responsibility of the property owner fronting that sidewalk to make it safe for public travel. Failure to comply will subject the property owner to a written warning and/or $100 fine. Parking bans become effective automatically — or at the discretion of the Director of Public Works — when there is an accumulation of four inches or more of snow and ice on any street in town. Parking bans will terminate no sooner than eight hours after a snowstorm, or as directed by the Director of Public Works.

Also, residents are reminded that placement of both automated refuse and recycling carts within the roadway, hampering snow removal operations, is a violation of the municipal code and subject to fines.
