Fairy tale characters brought to life in BHS’s ‘Into the Woods’ Cinderella, Red Riding Hood and other fairy tale characters took the stage at Berlin High School last week. The BHS Music & Theatre Arts Department performed Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical “Into the Woods” March 3 to 6.

The story follows a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who hopes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who simply wants his cow to give milk. Ultimately, their wishes are granted, but lead to disastrous results. The production was comprised of nearly 65 students. Rehearsals started in December, set construc-

Sondheim is known for his complex musical writing and quick lyrics. “I think his material is brilliant, and I’ve long been a fan of his work, but it is certainly challenging for students,” said Boyle. “Fortunately, our students in Berlin have proven time and again that they are not only capable of rising to a challenge, but they welcome one because they know the result is much more satisfying.”

How To Find a Caregiver What do you do when you or a loved one can’t get through a day without help? It’s a problem most families face sooner or later, and it’s a thorny one. One option is to have an adult child move in with the care recipient or vice versa so that there’s always someone on hand to run errands and provide companionship. But sometimes a move isn’t feasible. Another choice is a retirement home that provides services on site, but moving out of one’s own home and into an institution can be a hard sell. In-home caregiving can be a perfect middle ground. For an average of $25 per hour, you can hire a caregiver to provide aid in the care recipient’s own home. But caregivers can provide a wide range of services. Some people only need help with errands that require heavy lifting, while others need help with daily activities, such as bathing and dressing, or need medical care. What are the types of caregivers, and how do you find one who is qualified? Skilled care and custodial care If you need caretakers to change an IV or a catheter, you will have to hire someone with a medical license. Look for the words “skilled care” or “home health care.” If you don’t need any assistance that requires medical training, you need “custodial care,” “home care,” “personal care” or “attendant care.” These attendants will help the individual with activities of daily living, known in the trade as ADLs, like cooking, cleaning, bathing and dressing. Types of licenses

The Klingberg Nexus Professional Development Center has reopened to outside groups. The Nexus, a conference space completely remodeled in 2018, provides spaces for six to 48 people for private meetings, interviews, focused strategic planning, new-hire orientation, and more. Located in New Britain, Klingberg Nexus is housed in a historic building on a hilltop with beautiful vistas of central Connecticut. All proceeds from the Klingberg Nexus provide vital funding for Klingberg Family Centers’ programs for children and families dealing with the effects of trauma.

Companion care

Spprriinngg iiss S roru ounndd rigihgthtaA oronrneerr..!. tRhtehecC LLY!

Most caregivers, whether medical or custodial, are purely professional with their patients. However, a companion’s duties include socializing with the care recipient. For some elderly people who feel isolated in the home, a few hours a week spent chatting or playing cards with a companion can feel essential.

When it comes to choosing a caregiver, there are plenty of decisions to make. However, knowing the right terminology can make the choice as painless as possible.

GrassRoots Lawn Care

Some consider hiring a caregiver “under the table.” We recommend against this practice. You could be liable if they get injured (and you homeowners insurance probably will not cover the claim) or could be liable for unemployment benefits if they are terminated. We have worked with many agencies in the state and can refer you to a quality agency.

It is best to find a licensed caregiver. A Home Health Aide (HHA) license is a qualification for a custodial caregiver; HHAs cannot perform clinical tasks, but can manage a patient’s medication and help with activities of daily living (ADLs). A Certified Nursing Assistant, who reports to a nurse, is qualified to care for a patient who is ill even if the patient needs to go to a hospital or other medical facility; CNAs are qualified to change wound dressings and help patients by bathing them or changing sheets.

Weston (39-35) and Branford (54-27), the Lady Redcoats fell to Sacred Heart Academy, 34-29, Monday night in a quarterfinal round matchup in Hamden. SHA, the top seed in Class MM, improved to 24-1. Ninth-seed Berlin wrapped up its 2021-22 campaign with a record of 15-8. Monday’s game was hard fought. Berlin ran off 12 points to even things at 2727 at the close of the third quarter, but Carina Ciampi was clutch for the host team during the fourth. On a three-point attempt by teammate Meghan Kirck, Ciampi grabbed the offensive rebound and scored inside to put the Sharks ahead to stay. Emma Kirck (game-high 11 points) then went threefor-four at the foul line, propelling SHA to a 32-27 lead. Berlin came back with a basket by Kailee DeMaio and had a couple chances to tie the game, but missed from three-point range. The quarterfinal started out as a defensive struggle. Berlin jumped ahead 4-0,

and at the end of the first quarter, Maddy Sadowski sank a three-pointer to put Berlin up 7-5. The momentum soon shifted, however. The Sharks opened the second with a 14-0 surge and took a 21-12

lead into the half. At the outset of the third quarter, Ciampi converted on a put back and added a layup, and Emma Kirck scored in the lane to push the Sharks out to a 27-15 advantage.

Abercrombie From A1

The Meriden Democrat serves as chairwoman of the legislature’s Human Services Committee and sits on the influential Appropriations Committee. During her tenure, she has been a staunch advocate for human service needs, including issues involving senior citizens and those on the autism disorder spectrum. She was also instrumental in delivering funds for flood control in Meriden along with Berlin development projects.

“I am proud of my work with kids in need of disability services and bringing dollars to Abercrombie Meriden and Berlin bond projects, keeping the dollars flowing in education,” Abercrombie said. “It’s really been an honor to represent the 83rd district. I want to thank people for supporting and believing in me and re-electing me for eight terms.”

Abercrombie plans to spend time traveling with her husband, who retired four years ago, and grandchildren. “It’s time,” she said. Abercrombie won her seat in a 2005 special election to replace former state Rep. James Abrams, who became a Superior Court judge. At that time, she was the newcomer among seasoned Meriden lawmakers Sen. Thomas Gaffey, D-13th state Rep. Christopher Donovan, D-84th and state Rep. Emil “Buddy” Altobello, D-82nd. Today, Abercrombie is the veteran of the city’s delega-

tion, said Democratic Town Committee Chairwoman Millie Torres-Ferguson, who praised her work on human services and appropriations. “It’s going to be a huge loss,” said Torres-Ferguson. Abercrombie’s departure leaves an open seat in the 83rd district. Democrats are interviewing candidates but have not nominated anyone, Torres-Ferguson said. Democratic state Rep. Michael Quinn, who won his seat in the 82nd district last year, worked on Abercrombie’s campaigns throughout the years.

Quinn said he can understand her reasons for retirement — the atmosphere at the Capitol has become more partisan, her husband’s retirement and the expected arrival of two more grandchildren. “Clearly, her involvement in human services and as chair of that committee … and even before that her involvement with the PTO and PTA, that is clearly her mark,” Quinn said. mgodin@record-journal.com 203-317-2255
