Self-taught baker excited to share culinary creations By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
Baking has been a lifelong passion for Berlin High School alumna Katherine Tirado, and her mother was always by her side in the kitchen. “My aunt is also a cake baker, and she is the one who taught me how to make cake pops — my specialty now for my small business,” said Tirado, who introduced Katie Cake Pops in August of 2021, an enterprise she runs out of her home in Bristol.

“I took the opportunity with the pandemic and my time at home, and decided to finally make my dream a reality, and applied for the Cottage Food License,” said Tirado.

Berlin resident Richard Nigro dedicated his life to teaching music.
“I was finally able to share my creations with the world.” Tirado is a self-taught baker. Rather than attending formal culinary classes, much of her schooling as a baker came from books and YouTube.

Sadly, soon after retiring from North Haven Middle School, Nigro died unexpectedly. The 66-year-old and his wife, Ann, were set to move into their new home in Rock Hill, South Carolina when he suffered a heart attack in April 2021. See Scholarship, A4
