Self-taught baker excited to share culinary creations By Nicole Zappone The Citizen

Baking has been a lifelong passion for Berlin High School alumna Katherine Tirado, and her mother was always by her side in the kitchen. “My aunt is also a cake baker, and she is the one who taught me how to make cake pops — my specialty now for my small business,” said Tirado, who introduced Katie Cake Pops in August of 2021, an enterprise she runs out of her home in Bristol.

“I took the opportunity with the pandemic and my time at home, and decided to finally make my dream a reality, and applied for the Cottage Food License,” said Tirado.

Berlin resident Richard Nigro dedicated his life to teaching music.

“I was finally able to share my creations with the world.” Tirado is a self-taught baker. Rather than attending formal culinary classes, much of her schooling as a baker came from books and YouTube.

Sadly, soon after retiring from North Haven Middle School, Nigro died unexpectedly. The 66-year-old and his wife, Ann, were set to move into their new home in Rock Hill, South Carolina when he suffered a heart attack in April 2021. See Scholarship, A4

RECORD-JOURNAL EDITORIAL

Catherine Abercrombie has decided not to seek another term, which would be her ninth, in the General Assembly.

State Rep. Abercrombie won’t seek a ninth term and is on the Appropriations Committee. “It’s going to be a huge loss,” said Millie Torres-Ferguson, Democratic Town Committee chairwoman.

“I feel she has served the residents of the 83rd District “It feels like an out-of-body in an exemplary fashion,” experience,” she said. What she said following that didn’t said Michael Quinn, who worked on Abercrombie’s make the quote selection, campaigns and who won his but is worth repeating: “It’s wonderful. I’ve got a ton of people to thank.” All these years later, a lot of people have Abercrombie to thank. After the Democrat was elected to replace former state Rep. James W. Abrams, who became a Superior Court judge, many reelections ensued. Now, Abercrombie has decided not to seek another term, which would be her ninth, in the General Assembly.

“It’s really been an honor to represent the 83rd District,” she told the Record-Journal recently. “I want to thank people for supporting and believing in me and re-electing me for eight terms.” You can’t argue with her reasons for not seeking another term: spending time with grandchildren and traveling with her husband, who is now retired.

As replacing Abercrombie now becomes the focus, it’s also important to recognize her commitment to her constituents and her 16 years of service. That she’ll be hard to replace says a lot about the job she’s done.

Don’t settle for Less...

But Abercrombie will surely be missed. She has been an anchor of Meriden’s Democratic delegation. When she started, city lawmakers included state Sen. Thomas Gaffey, state Rep. Christopher Donovan and state Rep. Emil “Buddy” Altobello. Today, she serves as chairwoman of the legislature’s Human Services Committee

bid to represent the 82nd District last year. “Whoever replaces her has big shoes to fill.”

249943

Catherine Abercrombie made the Record-Journal’s quote of the week in early March 2005 after she won a special election to represent Connecticut’s 83rd District, which includes Meriden and Berlin.

In Brief Nature vs. Nurture

Garden Club

The Kensington Garden Club hosts the program “Nature vs. Nurture: Effects of the Landscape Setting on Trees and Shrubs” Thursday, March 17, 7 p.m., at the Community Center. Arborists Mike DeSanto and Allen Blake will remind attendees what stressors trees and shrubs commonly have no choice but to deal with.

Organized in 1955, the Kensington Garden Club operates exclusively on a nonprofit basis for charitable and educational purposes, and for the well-being of the community and public benefit. The club promotes civic beauty, encourages improvement of public spaces, raises awareness of environmental concerns and advances the art of floral design and horticulture. New members are welcome. Contact the group via kensingtongardenclub.net or Facebook.

Now in its second year, The Amazing Berlin Race challenges students and adults to use their knowledge of Berlin to solve clues and complete tasks throughout town. The Amazing Berlin Race, a collaborative effort of the Berlin Upbeat Program and Youth Services Department, will be held Saturday, April 2. To register, visit upbeat.berlinschools. org. Registration ends Friday, March 18.

Obituaries Sally J. Munson LACONIA, NH- Sally J. Munson, age 64, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at her residence in Laconia, NH. She was born February 2, 1958 to Donald and Anna (June) Munson of what was once Maple Shade Farm in Kensington, CT. Though not another son they had hoped for, she was still given the nickname “Sam.” And having been born on a Sunday, she never failed to remind others (especially her siblings) how “full of grace” that made her. She also insisted to always be called Mom, and never Mother (having to hate the formality of it). Us kids learning early to never get a greeting card saying “Mother” or at least crossing it out to say “Mom” or else we would get that “Mom glare.” A daughter, sister, mom! (NOT mother), and nana. But always a friend first! A 1976 graduate of Berlin High in CT, Sally then went on to pursue her passion of gardening and flowers graduating in 1977 from Rittners School of Floral Design. Her green thumb brought her much joy, giving purpose to every plant, every flower, and every petal. Farming, 4-H, cooking, day trips at the beach, chatting up a stranger were all just a way of life for her and wouldn’t choose to have it any other way. She respectfully passed on similar interests with all her children and always had an open door with extra seats at the dinner table. Always emphasizing it’s the little things in life that matter most. Sally is survived by her three children Christopher G. Choinski of CT, Melissa

BHS Athletic Hall of Fame: Larry Barber, Bob Facey Entering the Berlin High School Athletic Hall of Fame Hall this spring will be: Larry Barber (Class of 1963; baseball, football, basketball), Robert Facey (Class of 1978; football), Scott Trevethan (Class of 1988; tennis), Kory Kevorkian (Class of 2001; baseball, football, track and field), Jack Cooper (Class of 2008; football), Kaitlyn Bovee (Class of 2010; basketball, softball), and Nikki Kureczka (Class of 2010; soccer, track and field).

J. Choinski of MA, and MayBeth R. Mann and her husband of NH; her two grandchildren Luna and Logan who filled her heart with a new life and love; her brother Alan Munson of NY, and two sisters Carol Stribula of VA, and Joy Gay of MA; along with many niece and nephews; and always seeing her 4-legged grandpets as family. Now at peace, Sally is growing the garden of her dreams in the sky, and asked to think of her every time it rains as she’s “just watering the flowers.” Grow through what you go through! A special thank you to all the friends Sally met along her paths and to all the Healthcare Providers allowing her to have more time with us in our arms, though she will forever be in our hearts. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date (details to follow) at Erickson Hansen Funeral Home in New Britain, CT. In lieu of flowers, family has asked that donations are made in memory of Sally with the Connecticut Farmland Trust, to help preserve working lands for future generations. Ctfarmland.org

Berlin High’s 2000 and 2001 Division II state championship boys golf teams will be recognized as well. Longtime BHS tennis coach and teacher Rex Smith will we honored posthumously. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Sunday, April 24, 3:30 p.m., at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. Leading up to the event, The Citizen is highlighting the Class of 2022.

Larry Barber, Class of 1963 Larry Barber was an athlete for all seasons at BHS, playing football, basketball and baseball all four years. He was a starting quarterback, a sharpshooter on the hardwood, and an ace pitcher. “He had a great arm,” Barber’s former baseball and football teammate Tom Trevethan recalled. “He was hard to hit because he threw a heavy ball that dove into your hands. It was tough for hitters to make solid contact.” After high school, Barber was a top player in the local men’s softball league for some 20 years, playing with the East Berlin Volunteer Fire Department team. In 1998, Barber retired his spikes and moved his family to Jupiter, Florida, where golf would be his sport of choice. Four years ago, Barber suffered a stroke, which affected his speech and the right side of his body – but not his competitive nature. “When Larry was doing his rehab, he was still able to putt,” said Jackie, his wife of 38 years. “That was so important.” Now, Barber is back on the golf course. He learned to use his left side more as the power source for his swing, and typically plays two 18-hole rounds each week as a 10-handicap. When Barber was told of his selection to the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame “he broke out with a huge smile and feels deeply honored and grateful,” Jackie said.

“Those were some of the best days of his life and it touches his heart in a most sensitive way. He is a very humble man, but he is so proud to think this is happening to him.”

Robert Facey, Class of 1979 Robert Facey Jr. was a two-time all-conference fullback, and in 24 career starts, rushed for 3,079 yards. Facey’s family moved from New Britain to Berlin before his sophomore year. “My first year as Berlin’s coach was Bob’s first at Berlin,” Al Pelligrinelli recalled. “He may not have been the fastest, but he had the skills and instincts to avoid tackles. It might be a fake, change of speed or ‘bam and boom’ for yards.” Facey had a 204-yard game as a sophomore, and in Berlin’s heartbreaking 20-16 loss to Hand-Madison in the 1977 Class M championship, he manufactured a game-high 161 yards, while having runs of 75 and 40 yards called back due to penalties. Facey’s love of football continued for many years after high school. He helped start the midget football program in town and served as backfield coach for the New England Crusaders, a semi-pro team. Also, Facey was a football official from 1990 to 2016 and worked college games at all levels from 1995 to 2002. Facey was a longtime member of the Northern Connecticut Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, serving as the group’s president from 1998 to 2000. “Officiating and playing,” said Facey. “Well, I’ve enjoyed and still enjoy everything about football since I first played it.” For Hall of Fame induction ceremony ticket information, contact Joy Cooper at 860546-8614 or bhshalloffamebanquet@ gmail.com.
