NEW BUSINESS
The Truck Bar carves out a unique lane By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
For Merle McKenzie and Glenn Parra March 3 was the culmination of a lot of hard work; it was the day the high school friends from East Hartford cut the ribbon at their new business, The Truck Bar, at 151 Webster Square. Another special day followed, on March 18, when their combination bar-entertainment venue-pizza restaurant opened officially. It was Parra’s birthday as well. “We wanted to create something that had a cool feel to it, with truck memorabilia, games, pizzeria, and something for everyone,” said Parra. The Truck Bar is a family-friendly place, but minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Truck Bar owners Merle McKenzie and Nicole Zappone, The Citizen See Truck Bar, A6 Glenn Parra.
Anne Wilchynsky celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends during a recent luncheon at the VFW Post Home. A longtime advocate for local veterans, Wilchynsky has served as treasurer of the VFW Auxiliary for the past 20 years and volunteers at the Rocky Hill Veterans Hospital. Also, the selfless centenarian has raised funds for veterans projects and the Shriners Hospital. Artist Bob Dornfried created a caricature of “Wonder Woman” Wilchynsky for the birthday gathering, and Mayor Mark Kaczynski presented her with a proclamation from the town.

BHS Athletic Hall of Fame: BOSCO PAINTING Rex Smith, Scott Trevethan Aluminum Siding Refinishing • Power Washing
Longtime BHS tennis coach and teacher Rex Smith will we honored posthumously. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Sunday, April 24, 3:30 p.m., at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville.
Rex Smith Rex Smith taught math and coached tennis at Berlin High School for 38 years and directed state tennis tournaments for more than 25 years. He died in 2018 at the age of 71. BHS tennis players used a variety of words to describe Coach Smith, including quirky, honest, mischievous and stubborn. And players say he marched to the beat of his own drum. A graduate of Cheshire Academy and Central Connecticut State University,

Two of Eileen Thurston’s five children played tennis at BHS, and all five called Smith “Uncle Rex.” “He always had an open door for kids” said Thurston. “They could call him any time. Talk about anything that was happening in their lives.” Smith found special gratification teaching his players about dealing with stress and controlling one’s emotions on the court.
Before his sophomore year, Trevethan decided to focus solely on tennis, leaving soccer and baseball behind.

83rd House district From A1
Both parties are interviewing candidates to present to electors before the General Assembly party conventions in May. Republican Lou Arata, who made strong challenges against incumbent state Rep. Catherine Abercrombie, DMeriden, is vying for the seat in November. Republican Joseph Vollano, who has also unsuccessfully run for state and local offices, is also seeking the party nomination. Both men are Meriden residents. Meriden Republican Town Committee Chairwoman Elain Cariati said the RTC has not endorsed Arata or Vollano and recently completed choosing electors for the 83rd convention on May 17. The candidates will also meet with GOP town committees in Berlin and Cheshire, who could put up their own candidates. Abercrombie is not seeking

Meriden Democratic Town Chairwoman Millie TorresFerguson said city Democrats are interviewing candidates and having discussions with their counterparts in Cheshire and Berlin for the 83rd district and should have a candidate soon.

Arata said. “I’ve wanted to see it fair for everyone since 2018.” Arata believes in smaller, less intrusive government, decreasing the tax burden on individuals, families and small business and support for police and education.

Bill would return unclaimed property By Andrew Brown © The Connecticut Mirror
Lawmakers in Connecticut are considering a legal change this year to enable the state to automatically return so-called unclaimed property to hundreds of individuals every year. From 2000 to 2021, the state

treasurer’s office collected more than $2.3 billion in unclaimed property — in the form of forgotten bank accounts, insurance payments and more — but returned less than 37% percent of that amount to its rightful owners, according to a Connecticut Mirror investigation published earlier this year. In response, Connecticut Treasurer Shawn Wooden announced several changes to the unclaimed property program in February, which made it easier for people to

The legislation, for the first time, would offer the treasurer’s office access to governmental data from state agencies such as the Department of Revenue Services, The state’s Finance, Revenue the Department of Motor and Bonding Committee Vehicles and the Departheld a public hearing this ment of Labor. week on SB 379, which The treasurer’s staff would would give the Connecticut Treasurer’s Office the ability then use that information to to track down the owners of locate any individual with unclaimed property valued uncashed checks, missing at less than $2,500, verify their identity and send them checks.
Still, the change would be a dramatic advancement for Connecticut’s unclaimed property program, which the state has operated in a similar fashion since the 1930s. Property more than three to five years. That happens frequently. People move and forget to update their contact information with a company, or they are unaware they are listed as a beneficiary on an insurance policy. The state is meant to safeguard that money until the owners can be found. For most of the program’s history, the treasurer’s office listed the owners of the unclaimed property in newspaper ads. That notification process transitioned in 2016 to an online database, which is referred to as the CT Big List.

Mary Mushinsky, DWallingford, agreed and explained her frustrating experience with the unclaimed property program. In past years, Mushinsky tried to reclaim a security deposit that was collected by an electric utility, she said, but she was never able to get that money back from the
“We are working to have as many property owners as possible put their cash back in their pockets. These enhancements make the process of reuniting rightful owners with their unclaimed property easier and faster than ever before. And by authorizing automatic payments, many families may be receiving some muchneeded and unexpected money back,” Wooden said at a press conference last week. Wooden’s support for the bill should provide some momentum in the legislature, unlike past years, when his staff opposed other reform efforts. Democrats and Republicans voiced support for the legislation during the committee hearing this week, arguing the state needed to make it much easier for people to reclaim their lost money.
