The 2022 Boston Marathon, held April 18, was particularly special because it marked 50 years since females were officially allowed to run the race.
Longtime Berlin resident Tecla Marunchak Scholar died in 2014, a few months shy of her 95th birthday.
On Monday, 14,000 women set out on the 26.2-mile course through Boston, and Berlin High School graduate Alex Carbonell was among them.
Recently, her family donated a Ukrainian choir costume to the Berlin Historical Society that Scholar had made by hand. It's a work of velvet and beading and was worn during concerts Scholar performed in as a young woman.
A cardiology nurse at Hartford Hospital, Carbonell dreamed of running the Boston Marathon for as long as she can remember. “I have been training since December for this race, and it is hard to believe that it is already here,” Carbonell said leading up to the event. See Boston Marathon, A25

Bringing film classics back to the big screen By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
The idea of a local film society that would screen and discuss films is about to be-
come a reality for Berlin resident William Brighenti. “I want a place where neighbors and friends can get together to watch a movie and discuss it afterward,” the
longtime movie-lover said. “I want a place where you could even watch the movie with a glass of wine or a bucket of popcorn.”
Brighenti worked tirelessly the past few weeks to find a place to make that happen. “My goal is to make the movie free so people can just come out and enjoy
