Letters to the Editor

I was pleased that at the end of this year’s budget planning that it did not go as usual. It started out that way, but then something we never heard of before – COVID19 – affected our country and everything else became less important. When the Town Council unanimously voted to pass a zero mill rate increase to help our citizens, without much discussion, it showed that when things get “real” we all want the same thing. We just have different ideas how to get there. I was disappointed to see the letter from Sam Lomaglio in the April 23 Berlin Citizen. I agree with what the BOF, Town Manager and Finance Director recommended, which is being fiscally responsible. This is what Mayor Kaczynski and Republican councilors said they would do if elected. I was disappointed with the inferences made that the Town Council was going to use the financial hardships that so many are experienc-

Our citizens are smart enough to realize the town needs money to run, and that’s mostly done through taxes. I bet the council members would have loved to defer it, but that’s not realistic. I am delighted that Mayor Kaczynski and the council voted unanimously for fiscal responsibility. Republicans are committed to doing what is best for Berlin without further burdening its citizens. It’s a terrible situation our country is in, but it’s also good that we’ve all slowed down; families are having dinners together, and there’s less running around. I’m sad that our high school seniors won’t get to go to prom or play in championship games, but I hope they get to walk the stage to graduate. Embrace the good you see, help each other and stay safe. Politics will always be here. Sandra Coppola, Chair, Berlin Republican Town Committee

Now is not the time to tax

Irene DiPace, Kensington

I would like to thank Mayor Mark Kaczynski for leading the Town Council in helping senior citizens in town by not increasing our taxes! Living on a fixed income that does not increase at the same rate as the cost of living certainly has its challenges. We will not have any of our services cut and we don’t have to pay any more in taxes this year. Meanwhile, our first responders are taken care of and now seem to have what they need to do their job. Also, I have read about the improvements that are being made to the police station without spending many millions on a new building. With the cost of everything else going up, such as groceries, medications and insurance, it is nice to know that we have people in our corner looking out for us. This give us some peace of mind during these scary times.

CHESHIRE — Spring hope remains. Whether it fades or proves eternal will be seen in the weeks to come. For now, the CIAC is keeping open the possibility that there will be some kind of 2020 spring season for Connecticut’s high school athletes.

The CIAC reiterated its position after a Board of Control meeting Thursday morning, April 23. It’s a continuation of the “wait-and-see” approach the organization has See Honor roll, A12 taken since Gov. Ned Lam-

there is a spring season, it will take place in June. n To

make that happen, the state tournaments have been cancelled. The spring postseason typically spans the first two weeks of June. By scrapping the state championship events, the CIAC is freeing up competition time for as many teams and athletes as possible, rather than giving the lion’s share to the elite few who advance through the tournament brackets.

“There was no feasibility, from our perspective, to holding statewide events,” said Joel Cookson, the CIAC’s Director of Media & Sports Information. “This allows, if there is competition and it’s deemed safe, teams to play some of their local rivals and to get in those experiences in the time frame that ends up being allowed.” In keeping the spring sports window open, Connecticut is in the minority nationwide — ironic given that the CIAC was among the first to pull the plug on the winter postseason as the severity of the pandemic became apparent in mid-March. As of Wednesday, April 25 36 states had cancelled the spring sports season, in See CIAC, A16

most cases because schools Ultimately, Lamont and the in those states have been state Department of Educaclosed for the rest of the acation will decide the fate of

the Connecticut school year beyond that date, and thus the spring season. If schools do not reopen, there will be no scholastic sports in June. Some coaches have been wondering if games could be played even if school buildings don’t reopen. After all, they reason, school is in session via distance learning.

That possibility, says the CIAC, is not on the table.

Another proposal that met with resistance from CIAC member schools was extending a spring season into July. School financial years run July 1-June 30, so any extension of sports into July would span two budget cycles and get complicated. So, if schools do reopen this spring and there is sports season, it will be limited to June. To help get the ball rolling, the CIAC is bending

its mandatory practice rule. Athletes must still practice at least 10 days before competing, but five of those days can be fulfilled at home. The other five must be done with a coach.

The CIAC’s Board of Control will meet again on May 7. In the meantime, individual leagues and conferences will discuss how to conduct a potential June season.
