“You saw (senior center fielder Colin Telford) out here tracking down everything,” Antonetti said. “He saved me like four runs and a ton of hits. The no errors is the biggest thing, and I just have all the faith in the world in them that they’re going to make the play.” The Redcoats, however, had a couple miscues in the field that cost them. With the game a scoreless affair, Hand senior third baseman Anthony Depino singled to begin the bottom of the fourth. With one run-

said Veleas. “Simple as that.”
Gileau hit the next batter, which loaded the bases with no one out. After a sacrifice opened up the scoring, junior second baseman Evan Mastrobattisto hit a line drive into the left-center gap. The shot got by junior center fielder Jamie Palmese, allowing two more runs to score, making it a 3-0 ballgame – the final tally.
Gileau did his job, but his counterpart was just too tough. Through the first four innings, Antonetti threw only 38 pitches and retired all but one batter – Palmese, who singled up the middle.
Berlin coach Leo Veleas emphasized that pitching and defense is how you win games, but the lack of offense was the Redcoats’ undoing on this day.

Outside that fateful fourth inning, Gileau allowed only three baserunners. He was rather efficient as well, resulting in him pitching all six defensive innings for the Redcoats.

Of the 13 batters Berlin sent to the plate in those four innings, only two saw more than four pitches in a single at-bat. Antonetti’s only two walks came in the final inning, when he had thrown 60-plus pitches.

The Berlin lineup was made up of seven right-handed hitters, giving Antonetti a slight advantage. The junior was able to snap the curveball inside on those righties, which was effective from the first to the seventh inning. The Redcoats were frozen by that curveball, which found the inside corner for called strikes several times.

The No. 2 Berlin Redcoats met up with the top-seeded Daniel Hand Tigers Saturday night to play for the CIAC Class L state baseball championship surrounded by a sea of fans on a warm summer night. State updates bottle bill
Starting in 2024, the standard deposit on returnables will double to 10 cents. This makes sense if only because of inflation, but it is also thought that it will increase the redemption rate, which could take some strain off towns’ and cities’ recycling costs and also address this state’s recycling problem. Redemption rates on returnable bottles and cans have dropped below 50 percent, the CT Mirror has reported, and the state is facing the closure of an outdated regional trash-to-energy plant operated by MIRA, the Materials Innovation and Recycling Authority.
legislature didn’t respond. … When MIRA closes, suddenly we’re going to get smacked upside the head.” Starting in 2023, the drink categories requiring a deposit fee will grow to include hard ciders and seltzers, juices, coffee drinks, teas, sports drinks and energy drinks. This makes good sense and reflects how much beverage marketing has changed in 40 years. Bottled water was added in 2009. The bill also imposes a 5cent surcharge on “nips,” those tiny liquor bottles that are so often seen discarded
ROGERS
A trust is a legal entity under which one person -- the "trustee" -- holds legal title to property for the benefit of others -- the "beneficiaries." The trustee must follow the rules provided in the trust instrument. An "irrevocable" trust cannot be changed after it has been created. In most cases, this type of trust is drafted so that the income is payable to you (the person establishing the trust, called the "grantor") for life, and the principal cannot be applied to benefit you or your spouse. At your death the principal is paid to your heirs. This way, the funds in the trust are protected and you can use the income for your living expenses. While gifting assets outright is much simpler process than setting up a trust, the following are some of the advantages of setting up a trust instead:
Control. With an irrevocable trust, you as the grantor can maintain some control over the assets. You get to choose the trustees and establish the rules of the trust. You can also retain the right to change beneficiaries with a power of appointment in your will.

Taxes. If the trust is structured properly, it can have a tax advantage for your beneficiaries. Assets that have gone up in value will receive a “step-up” in basis on your death, which means your beneficiaries will pay less in capital gains taxes. Assets that are gifted do not receive a “step-up.”

Asset protection from creditors. If you give money to a family member directly, that money could be lost to the recipient’s carelessness, creditors, or divorce. Keeping the funds in a trust protects the assets for the future.
Medicaid. If you anticipate needing long-term care benefits in the future, then it is important to plan. If you give away money or fund an irrevocable trust within the five years (the "look-back period") before applying for Medicaid, you may face a period of ineligibility for Medicaid benefits. The actual period of ineligibility will depend on the amount gifted or transferred to the trust. Putting assets in a trust allows you to plan while retaining some income and control over the assets. If you would like to explore the benefits of an irrevocable trust, please contact our office for an appointment. Our entire office is vaccinated so in person appointments are available for vaccinated clients.

Parents and other family members who want to pass on assets during their lifetimes may be tempted to gift the assets. Although setting up an irrevocable trust lacks the simplicity of giving a gift, it may be a better way to preserve assets for the future.

The bottle bill update passed overwhelmingly — 105-42 in the House and 33-1 in the Senate — proof positive that recycling is now mainstream issue, not the concern solely of a pioneering few.
Why an Irrevocable Trust May Be Superior to Outright Gifts.
Income. Putting assets in a trust means you can receive income from the assets to continue to pay for living expenses. Depending on how the trust is set up, you can receive regular income payments or the trustee could have discretion to make payments.
“It worked very well at first,” said Rep. Mary Mushinsky, D-Wallingford, noting that the initial redemption rate was above 90 percent. “It has eroded over time, and the

The General Assembly’s update of Connecticut’s bottle bill may have been ho-hum news to some, but it highlights a couple of things: how very old the original bill is — it dates to 1978 — and how far behind the times it had fallen.

COVID-19 VACCINE
ASK THE EXPERT
“If I’ve waited to get the vaccine, will there still be chances to get it in the future? How can I get it in the upcoming months?”
where people normally receive their healthcare services such as urgent care clinics, doctor offices and pharmacies.
This will be especially true for children as many parents are more comfortable with the trusted pediatrician providing a vaccination rather than a public clinic. The State of Connecticut has been attempting to register more pediatricians as vaccine providers to meet this demand.
“¿Si he esperado para obtener la vacuna, tendré oportunidades de obtenerla en el futuro? ¿Como la puedo obtener en los próximos meses?”
En las últimas seis semanas, hemos visto un cambio dramático de lo difícil que ha sido obtener la vacuna de COVID-19 a tener fácil There are plenty of acceso a ella tanto en vaccines available in pequeñas como en mega the United States and clínicas. As these mega sites start to close, a question I’m asked is will the vaccine still be available in the future. This question usually comes from someone who is hesitant about receiving at this time and either wants to wait to study the vaccine more, wants to see if the vaccine has side effects on other people or see the effectiveness of the vaccine.

Obituaries Roderick Hewitt BELLOWS FALLS, VTRoderick (Rod) Hewitt, 81, of Bellows Falls, VT, embraced his eternal home May 19, 2021. Son of the late Dorothy Mary Stewart Hewitt and Theodore Hewitt, Rod was born in Torrington, CT, on March 8, 1940, shortly after the Great Depression. From his first job scooping ice cream at the Torrington Creamery, to creating and running a small engineering firm for 30 years, Rod poured himself into building a different life and following his heart. Although he was a successful entrepreneur, carpenter, engineer, craftsman, poet, farmer, church leader, and veteran of the National Guard, he most cherished his title of man of faith, husband, dad, and grandpa. While living and working for more than three decades in Berlin, CT, Rod pursued his dream of building a home in the nearby Green Mountain state, eventually moving there in 2000. With his wife Marilyn, he purchased a 150-acre tract of land in the picturesque hills of Rockingham, VT. Over the years, his Yankee ingenuity and talent for planning, designing, building, and farming transformed the land into Dayspring Farm. The challenges of a farming life perfectly matched his avid interest in solving problems. From the array of barns, buildings, cultivated gardens,

and fenced fields to the modest chalet he shared with his wife, Dayspring Farm was a singular achievement. Over the years, the farm was an outlet for his many creative pursuits, which turned into side businesses selling Christmas trees, cattle, sheep, eggs, and honey. It also became a source of shared family memories. Rod took pleasure in showing the farm and its many hidden treasures to visitors, wearing his farmer’s overalls with his Australian shepherd dog at his heels. He invited people into his own deep connection with the land, his projects, and his livestock. No visit with Rod would end without a stop to toss some fish food to the trout in the pond. Among Rod’s favorite things were taking his wife out to dinner, annual Thanksgiving weekends with family, jamming with friends playing the banjo or mandolin, the Boston Red Sox, UConn women’s
basketball, fishing, boats, and old trucks. He was an avid reader and was especially drawn to true stories about inspiring missionaries, men of God, and adventurers. He spent countless hours in his shop handcrafting signs, bowls, furniture, and other unique treasures from many kinds of wood. His family and close friends knew that Rod’s creations were special, not only for their beauty and functionality, but because they were a one-of-a-kind expression of his creativity and love. When asked once why he continued to stand by the losing sports team rather than going for a winner, he said, “I prefer to root for the underdog.” This became true beyond his support of an underperforming team. Over the years, Rod found many people in need to support and was ever ready to invest generously in helping family, friends, and even complete strangers. Rod’s encounter with the love of Jesus Christ in his 40s deeply impacted the course of his life. Following Christ was a daily walk for Rod, and he enthusiastically initiated conversations about the new life that was possible through faith in Christ with anyone who would listen. Rod took an unconventional medical path in his long struggle with cancer and outlived the prognosis of the disease by numerous years. A sense of humor, faith, optimism, and love
of life marked those years. The quote he passed down from his mother to his own children was to “keep your eye upon the donut and not upon the hole.” In his last winter season, he compiled a book of original poems, prose, and cartoons. A picture of his beloved Dayspring Farm is on the cover with the title “There is a Way that Leads to Life.” Rod found that way and his life was a gift to many. He will be especially missed by his surviving spouse of 56 years, Marilyn Kalber Hewitt, his four children, Janine Hewitt, Raymond Hewitt and his wife Tina of Irmo, SC, Carlton Hewitt and his wife Abigail of Southern Shores, NC, and Susan Hewitt Grove and her husband Christopher of Poughkeepsie, NY; his seven grandchildren, Karmen, Katelyn, Isaac and Isabella Hewitt, Grace and Charlotte Hewitt, and Sebastian MacIsaac; and his extended family, church family, and friends. A memorial service in celebration of Rod’s life was held May 29th at the United Church of Bellows Falls, 8 School Street, Bellows Falls, VT, followed by a reception at their residence at 5 Edgebrook Park, Bellows Falls, VT. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to Our Place Drop-In Center or at www.ourplacevermont. org.

look at me and made a weird face. Before I could even walk in the door, he said, “Michael, your pants are on backwards; did you wear them like that all day?” With a dawning terror, I looked down. At which point, my dad added, “Dude, they’re jeans.” And there I stood, with two huge pockets in the front, and a golden zipper running right up my backside. Now, you may wonder why I’m sharing this rather embarrassing story with you,
here today. First off, to all the younger siblings who are sitting in the audience right now, I want you to know that you too can be the kid who wears your pants backwards to school and then, a short 7 years later, be tasked with imparting great wisdom to your graduating class. But, today my focus is on my fellow classmates, sitting here before me. I want to talk about our lives not just today, or tomorrow, but after high school. ence those kinds of days. Days where we realize that we wore our pants backwards. Days where we look ourselves in the mirror and say, “How could I have made such an embarrassing mistake?”
After I got off the bus that day, my dad sat me down and told me a story of his own. He told me about his first day of work after college at a big, fancy accounting firm. He told me how excited he was and how he enthusiastically raised his hand at every single opportunity during his first day training seminar. And, It wasn’t until he got home and looked in the mirror that he noticed the enormous, neon orange clearance tag hanging from the armpit of his new suit jacket. Now, aside from the obvious takeaway that the guys in my family seem to have an issue with clothing, what I mostly remember from my dad’s story is how much better I felt
Up until now, it has been our parents, family, and teachers who have filled this role of showing us compassion through the failures, mistakes, and embarrassments of life. They have wiped our tears, picked us up, and given us the fortitude to go back and try again. Our teachers have guided us through failed homework assignments, assuring us that comprehension of the material was within our grasp, even when we did not believe it ourselves. Our families have spent countless hours helping us to navigate the failures and complexities of life.
And now, as we head out into the world, make new friends, and forge new bonds, it’s our turn to fill that role for others. It’s our turn to put into action what we have learned from our family and our teachers about compassion. How we react to someone who is metaphorically wearing their pants backwards is just as important as how we react to our own failures and embarrassments.
others, we strengthen ourselves. And, we all become better human beings in the process. So, extend a hand to your new friend who overslept and missed an exam. Display understanding to that new professor or boss who has not quite found their footing. Show compassion to your parents and siblings who try to hold back tears, and fail, on the day they drop you off … and say goodbye.
So, what I am saying to you, BHS Class of 2021, it’s our turn to relate, be vulnerable, and show we care. It’s our turn to wipe someone else’s tears, pick them up, and give them the fortitude to go back and try again. By bolstering the confidence of

School will undoubtedly take us in different directions, but I am sure that, right now, we are all experiencing some of the same emotions. Excitement, nervousness, uncertainty, and maybe even a little bit of terror. But, that’s OK. Life is filled with mistakes and rebounds, embarrassments and celebrations. I know that we are equipped to handle whatever comes our way. And so, to the Class of 2021, here’s to a life filled with meaningful stumbles, personal connections, and everpresent compassion.

As we head out into the world, we have to expect to make mistakes. We are going to stumble, fall, fail, and sometimes embarrass ourselves. The mistakes we make may be minor, like wearing our pants backwards, or they may be bigger, like oversleeping and missing a major exam or presentation. And, I could stand up here and talk about how to bounce back from embarrassment and failure, but I don’t want to do that. What I do want to talk about is how you react when you notice that someone else has made a mistake. When you notice that someone else is wearing their pants backwards.
when I knew that someone cared about me and could relate to what I was feeling.
