$54,000 transfer approved for police station renovations Berlin High School principal Eileen Eustis on the graduating seniors: “They are a remarkable class with many achievements in academics, civic leadership, athletics, BHS Class of 2020 Instagram: @bhs_2020_ service and the arts.”

Class of 2020 persevered By Jack Carroll Special to The Citizen

Due to the pandemic, their time at Berlin High School came to an abrupt end in mid-March, but members of the Class of 2020 continued to strive for success. Audrey Feldman, the class valedictorian and the vice president of the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, racked up a list of accomplishments in her final year in high school. In addition to placing first in

the Business Finance Series at the 2020 state DECA conference, following the COVID-19-related cancellations, Feldman wasted no time in teaming up with the Friendship Service Center in New Britain to start a donation drive to help the homeless. This year Feldman was also the recipient of numerous academic awards that recognized her excellence in several subjects, including Advanced Placement Statistics and Honors Calculus.

Feldman will be headed to the University of Notre Dame in the fall to study Economics and Global Affairs. Joining Feldman at the state DECA conference was fellow senior Adam Kajzer, who ranked first in the state for the Accounting Applications Series. Also, he was a recipient of the Mathematics Award for excellence in Advanced Placement Calculus and served as a captain of the BHS boys swimming and See Graduates, A12

The Board of Finance approved a transfer of $54,000 into the Buildings & Renovations account of the Police Station Construction Fund for two new interview rooms. Police Chief John Klett said that these were improvements the department had previously identified and had wanted to complete during its jail cell renovations in 2019. The Town Council had approved $251,000 for those improvements. Klett said that the $54,000 would be used to create “soft” and “hard” interview rooms – soft interviews for non criminal cases and hard interviews for interrogations. According to state statutes, Klett said that hard interrogation rooms

need to be fitted with recording equipment. “We currently have to bring them in the conference room and use a laptop because we don’t have the room,” he said. “These two rooms are the last things we can do without spending a lot of money.” Finance Director Kevin Delaney said that the department would be using the same contractor they used for constructing the new jail cells, Bismark Construction of Milford. Completing the interview rooms would be an extension of the department’s original contract with the contractor. $22,981.85 will be transferred into the Buildings & Renovations account from the Jail Cells account in the Police Station Construction Fund, another $14,834.41 from the See Renovations, A2

Celebrating BHS graduates Banners : Be on the lookout for special banners honoring the Class of 2020.

Front lobby decorations: Faculty and staff members created a display to honor our seniors for the front lobby windows of the school. Stop by and take a look. Cap and car decorating via social distancing: On June 19 students are invited to decorate their graduation caps and cars at home.

Graduation: Aug. 7 at Berlin High School. The format is yet to be determined based on the state restrictions and approval of the local health

department. The Governor announced that Phase 3 of the state reopening would potentially start around July 22 and may permit groups upwards of 100 people. We are hopeful that this may change, so that we can have a more traditional graduation ceremony.

COMMUNITIES RALLY FOR JUSTICE

Review Your Estate Plan Basics The Covid-19 pandemic has offered a great reminder to review the elements of your estate plan. Below are some key items to consider. Set up a call with Ericson, Scalise & Mangan, PC to consider any specific details related to your own plan. Review your health care proxy and power of attorney: Be sure you are comfortable with your choices of who will make medical and financial decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. For each, have a back-up in place in case the first person is unavailable. Now is the time to have new documents created if yours no longer apply. These choices apply for any decisions made for you while you are still alive.

Amid nationwide unrest over the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, people gathered in Berlin on Sunday, June 7 to protest institutional racism and the deaths of unarmed African Americans at the hands of police. Photo by Robert Mayer

In wake of George Floyd killing, protestors take to the streets

Revise your will: Decide whether you want to keep the executor you have named for your estate, and make sure you name a back-up. This person will be responsible for validating your will when you die, handling your affairs and filing your income and estate tax returns. Be sure you have included a guardian for any minor children, as well as back-up for that guardian.

By Nick Carroll The Citizen

The May 25 death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department has sparked nationwide protests which show no signs of dissipating.

Review your trust: Take a look at the beneficiaries of your trust. Decide whether you want them to be given the income outright or over time, or if you want to have the funds held for them in a trust, especially if the beneficiaries are minors. Ensure that you feel good about your choice of trustee, whether it is an individual, such as your attorney or accountant, or a corporate entity, such as a bank.

Across the U.S. – and right in our own backyard – citizens have taken to the streets to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement and to stand against racism. The “Plainville Unity March” drew hundreds of attendees. Resident Sarah Doyle helped

2060 West Street (Exit 31 Off 84) Southington

Make sure your trust is funded: It is helpful for you to fund your trust while you are alive, because that way your assets can be managed to support you while you’re alive if you are unable to make decisions on your own. It also avoids a court’s involvement to administer the trust after your death.

So if I don’t want my little community to be silent, then I need to be the person to speak up.” Doyle was heartened to see the town’s response to the Unity March. She thought a See Protestors, A13

Each party will get a set of bowling balls. After use, Turcotte said they will be taken out of rotation to be disinfected. In accordance with the governor’s guidelines, hand sanitizing stations are set up throughout the alley and at each lane. You can now also pre-pay for lanes online. Touchless systems are in the works for the restrooms and the arcade will open at a later date. Turcotte said the scary part is spending thousands to meet regulations and keep everyone safe, while not knowing how much business he will have. Bowling alleys, and all indoor recreation facilities, are allowed to open at 50 percent of normal capacity. The same rule applies for indoor dining, as well.

At the Picture Show in Berlin, movies will continue outdoors as management prepares indoor showings again. Bria Naylor, marketing manager for Picture Show Entertainment, said they don’t have a reopening date to announce. She said the drive-in setup has been popular since opening June 5. “It’s been super exciting and a lot of fun to finally get back to playing some movies,” Naylor said.

Besides keeping up with safety guidelines, theaters have the added complexity of getting new movies to show. “There was a total stop to releases … Because Hollywood is taking their time and kind of watching their environment, the economy and what people want to do right now …,” she said.

REGISTER NOW!

The next planned new releases aren’t until July. Until then, the theater will continue showing family favorites, old classics and horror — largely based on audience requests. The theater’s parking lot can fit 43 cars, which park every other space. To minimize contact with others, customers have to order and pay for concessions on smartphones. A staff member delivers the food. Customers don’t have to wear face masks while in vehicles, but are required to put one on if using the restroom. In general, any businesses planning to open in phase 2 must follow guidelines from the governor’s office regarding all factors of business, including the use of face masks and other personal protection equipment, thorough cleaning, training of employees on new procedures, capacity tracking, maintaining an employee log, social distancing guests and offering touchless or contactless services.

Obituaries Edison Charles Occhi

From A6

BERLIN- Edison Charles Occhi, 88, of Berlin, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2020. He was the husband of the late Henrietta (Sokolowski) Occhi. Born in Berlin, he was the son of the late Ementor and Theresa (Grasso) Occhi. Edison was a lifelong Berlin resident and was a U.S. Marine Veteran of the Korean War. Edison was formerly employed as a tool and die maker at New Departure in Bristol before retiring. He was a life member of the NRA, a member and past Commander of Berlin VFW Post 10732, and was a member of the Marine Corps League, the Mattabasett Range, the Wallingford Rod and Gun Club, and St. Paul Church. Surviving are two sons, Martin Occhi and his wife Pamela of Wyoming, Charles Occhi and his wife Krys of Berlin; a daughter, Sandra Karoll and her husband Randy of Berlin; a brother, Theodore Occhi and his wife Eleanor of New Hampshire; his sister, Amelia Occhi of Berlin; five grandchildren and their spouses, Marcus and Julie Occhi, Marcie and David Lapides, Ross and Rachael Karoll, and Luke and Logan Karoll; four greatgrandchildren, Colten and

Business owners and employees were coming outside with signs they had made to show their support as we marched by.”

“Chief (Matthew) Catania was incredibly supportive, and he spoke at the rally. He marched with us. I think that was a very substantial gesture on the part of the Plainville Police Department, and I know it was very well-received by our community,” said Doyle. Well-attended peaceful protests have taken place throughout the area, including in Berlin, where hundreds converged on Veterans Park and marched along Farmington Avenue. Prior to that rally, in a message posted to the Berlin Police Department Facebook page, police chief John M. Klett made it known that he understands why people have felt compelled to protest.

The Berlin chief added, “All people deserve to be treated fairly and with respect. There is no room for racism in law enforcement. Any officer who violates their oath or the public trust must be

WALLINGFORD — Erika Hurst, of Durham, is the owner of Strongher Fitness in Wallingford. Her business, formerly known as Hurst Strength, reopened this week.

Joan Goodman, membership and marketing director of the Meriden, New Britain, and Berlin YMCAs, emailed a statement detailing plans for the Y’s reopening.

1. Sanitization measures “I just completed the selfcertification for the government’s compliance for reopening safely” said Hurst. Throughout Strongher Fitness, 168 North Plains Industrial Road, there are signs detailing the state’s COVID19 prevention efforts, including staying home when ill, frequent hand washing, wearing masks, and keeping at least 6 feet from others. “We have the big garage door that we open for extra ventilation” said Hurst. Hurst said each client that enters the gym will receive their own cleaning products. Commonly touched surfaces will be cleaned throughout the day and there will be a deep clean each night. The Meriden, New Britain, and Berlin YMCA’s safety procedures include temperature checks and stringent sanitization measures including an electrostatic sprayer.

2. Personal training Due to the nature of Hurst’s personalized fitness business she is accustomed to working with only a few clients at a time. See Gyms, A20

4. Starting from scratch

LOOKING FOR A

PET TO ADOPT?

Many gym-goers will be restarting their workout routine after months of no structured physical activity.

860-995-9665

Hurst said that a lot of people get stuck in the all or nothing mindset.

5. Less equipment

Dice was abandoned in a box at the shelter. He is shy and somewhat independent. He will let you pet him on his terms but he is not a lap cat. He has come around a lot since we have been keeping out in the cat room. No children as he wouldn’t tolerate constant touching. Online adoption form at www.fobac.org If you have room in your heart & home to rescue a hard to adopt boy, Dice would be so happy to get out of the shelter. fobac 860-828-5287
