For their community service project, over the past two years, Berlin Girl Scout Troop 66526 made beaded items to sell, with the proceeds going to the Connecticut Children’s Hospital. The Scouts made beaded book markers, key chains, fairy garden
stakes and plant pot charms, and also collected money from sales of kitchen fairies donated by Meriden resident Ina Belanger. Along the way, the local Scouts earned many badges and learned many skills. It was an incredible effort on their part and they were so

Longtime local librarian takes on new challenge MERIDEN — Berlin resident Becky Starr has been named acting director of the Meriden Public Library. The long-time city librarian was promoted after Clevell Roseboro II stepped down as director to accept a new role in an academic setting in his home state of North Carolina. Starr will serve as acting director until at least the time when a $13 million project to renovate and expand the library’s home on Miller Street is complete. Currently, the library is located at Meriden Mall.
tee and serves as vice president of the Library Board of Trustees, said Starr is wellpositioned to assume leadership of the library “with virtually no hiccups.” For Starr, the appointment appears to be a natural next step during her 25-year tenure with the Meriden
Public Library. She joined the library’s staff in 1997, after having previously worked in the city manager’s office as a budget analyst. Starr said she became familiar with the city’s department heads at the time, including then library director

Moments before he spoke with the Record-Journal, Roseboro motioned to Starr when he addressed library staff and city officials in saying he believed the library will be left “in good hands.”

there was another outspoken anti-slavery advocate, Deacon Daniel Galpin (17561844). At the time, he lived in this house (pictured), now at 914 Worthington Ridge. After Galpin’s death, the house was moved a short distance so the church could be built on the site in 1850.
Galpin had a wood working shop in his house, and posted a sign in the window that stated: “Anti-Slavery Books for Sale Here.” The sign was quickly torn down by someone who disapproved, but that did not stop Galpin from being outspoken all his life. In 1843 he wrote letters to the editor in response to an oped by John Quincy Adams.

It will feature 14 divisions, ranging in age from players as young as fifth grade to senior citizens.
Last year, the tournament gave $3,000 to One More Dog Rescue, $1,800 to Long Island Bulldog Rescue and $500 to Thank Dog Rescue. Since 2017, the tournament has donated $14,805 to rescue dogs. Last year saw the tournament’s third-largest field at 217 participants. players and $50 for doubles. Registration is at Waytonopen.com. Donations and sponsorships are also available on the tournament website. “Fifteen years is pretty good,” Wayton said. “This was always a word-of-mouth thing and now it’s a legit tournament every summer. We are trying to break our entry record and we are on a pretty good pace this year.” Wayton is a special education teacher at Bristol Central and an assistant coach on the school’s girls tennis team. He said many of his players from BC will be in action next month. Wayton expects the 2022 field to be deep. He noted that high school players from Berlin and Maloney have signed up. Wayton also hopes to see some Southington High School players on their home court.
