Grandson honors grandmother Contractor shop, with 98th birthday jazz concert Lions plans get PZC approval

NEWINGTON – The Dixieland jazz that filled the halls and courtyard at Jefferson House on June 13 was delivered with love in celebration of a resident’s 98th birthday. This wasn’t just a musical performance for Berlin musicians Matt and Atla DeChamplain; it was a demonstration of love and musical traditions deeply rooted in their family.

As the ensemble performed in the courtyard, Matt’s grandmother Florence Deschamplain listened from the other side of the window while staff and residents could also hear the music via live stream throughout the community. Mrs. Deschamplain, who moved to Jefferson House at 1 John H. Stewart Drive in 2016, was serenaded by Matt on piano, Atla on vocals and an ensemble with music from the era she was born including “Three O’Clock in the Morning” and “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” capped off with “Happy Birthday to You.”

He was just learning how to play piano by ear and would perform during the Saturday lunch hour which allowed him a chance to hone his skills in a “safe” environment. Now he is delighted that he can continue building memories there with his “Nana.” “Our family is very musical so naturally when we visited her at Jefferson House, we would go to the piano and play and sing,” he said.

Heartwarming event Editor : I want to thank all of our community members that celebrated the Berlin High School Class of 2020 during our car parade on Sunday, June 21. It was heartwarming to see our students drive through town and come through the high school in their caps and gowns with big smiles on their faces.

Special thanks to the Berlin Police Department, particularly Officer Tom Bobok. Without their careful planning and support and Officer Bobok’s leadership, this event would not have been possible. It was a wonderful collaborative event which fills me with great pride for Berlin High School. Thank you, again! It was certainly a celebration that the Class of 2020 will remember for years to come. Thank you to all the community members that took time out on Father’s Day to line the streets and school parking lots. It meant so much to us as a school community, the families of our seniors and the students themselves.

It has been a difficult year for our senior students, but seeing our district staff, families and community members come together to cheer them on clearly meant so much to them. It was an amazing demonstration of support on the part of the entire community!

Those visits stopped during the pandemic. “So especially in the light of her birthday, I wanted to do something special for her and hoped this would bring her and other residents joy.” Mrs. Deschamplain is a native of Rhode Island where she met her husband Norman at Kaiser Shipyard in Providence. In 1955, they moved to Hartford and later, Farmington, where they raised their two children, Norma and Raymond. She worked at Aetna insurance as a keypunch operator and then Pratt & Whitney/ Chandler Evans when she entered the new field of IBM computers. Music was always the life blood of the family, first, thanks to Norman who was a singer as well as a welder and contractor, and later through Raymond who forged his own musical career. The couple, who was married 60 years, also lived in Wethersfield and Florida. Matt holds dear many special childhood memories of his grandparents such as eating fresh raspberries out of the garden, pancake breakfasts and Christmas mornings listening and singing to a player piano, which is one of his passions. It was music that actually brought Matt and Atla together when they met in their high school years at the Greater Hartford Academy of Performing Arts. Matt is well-known in the jazz field having performed at the Monterrey Jazz Festival, New York’s JVC Jazz Festival and many other venues. He has toured extensively, performed with other ensembles, and can be heard on many recordings including “Pause,” a collaboration with his wife. He is on the faculty of The Hartt School (of music) at the University of Hartford and has held multiple other academic positions. See Birthday, A12

STATE

Officials urge more testing as businesses reopen By Susan Haigh Associated Press

HARTFORD — State officials urged Connecticut residents Thursday, June 18 to get tested for COVID-19 as more businesses reopen and people return to work, noting there’s greater availability of tests and they’re free. Plainville state Rep. William Petit, a retired endocrinologist, said he believes there’s currently “less motivation” for people living in Connecticut to get tested, given the state’s declining numbers of infections, deaths and hospitalizations. But he said residents should still be wary about the novel coronavirus.

“Those are statistics but one death to the people involved, that’s a tragedy,” said the Republican, during a news conference with Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont and Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz at the Community Health Center of New Britain. Petit also advised that residents continue to wear masks, avoid tightly confined areas with little air flow, practice social distancing and frequently wash their hands.

16 only 80 were positive. That represented a 1.2% positivity rate. Nearly 366,000 tests have been performed in the state. People can call 2-1-1 or visit the state’s testing locator to find available sites. For most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or lead to death.

al to pay workers a $450 stipend to return to work, an idea supported by President Donald Trump’s top economic advisor and some congressional Republicans. “I’m doing everything I can to encourage people to get back to work and make sure that they can do it safely,” he said. “If they can’t do it safely and they don’t feel like they can do it safely, they’ll be reluctant to go back.”

New statistics released Thursday, June 18 by the Department of Labor show the state gained 25,800 net jobs in May, after losing 269,200 jobs in April due to the pandemic. Andy Condon, director of the agency’s Office of Research, called the latest figures “the beginnings of a recovery” of those historic losses from April. See Testing, A11

She also advised residents who might be tempted to launch illegal fireworks to be conscientious of their neighbors, including children, senior citizens and pets, who might be frightened by the loud bursts. “It affects kids differently, older people, animals. We would ask that they take that into consideration,” Bradley said. Large scale fireworks displays may come back in 2021. “For now, we’re worried

HEALTH

Finding the right practitioner is key to getting results

I say this as I read in news articles all the time that this MD or that MD shares information on studies of natural remedies that seem to indicate they don’t work. What should be made clear in these reports is if the person offering the information was actually trained in prescribing the remedy they are reporting on. Since Standard American Medical Schools don’t offer training to their future physicians in nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine, physical medicine, acupuncture and any number of alternative medical practices, MD expertise in them is unlikely.

American Medical Schools train thousands of doctors every year how to practice with pharmaceuticals and surgery. Further, the doctors are then specialized in things like eyes, ears, joints, heart, etc., so they can refer you to those types of specialist for specific recommendations of pharmaceuticals for that area of the body. The information that comes from these doctors is obviously one-sided compared to the alternatively trained practitioners who graduate into medical practices by the hundreds each year.

Many of the alternative practices – naturopaths for example – look at the whole body and intersecting pathways, graduate less than 1,000 doctors per year. See Aresco, A34

When a patient is reluctant to take a pharmaceutical, the doctor has the option of referring to a naturopathic doctor. The naturopathic doctor will recommend alternative therapies and life style changes to see if the problem can be corrected without the pharmaceutical. Many can be corrected. If it can, then the problem is solved. If it doesn’t correct the problem then the patient returns to the medical doctor and the pharmaceutical

is the answer. Every doctor should have a naturopathic doctor on their team of specialists. There is always a patient who can’t or won’t take a recommended treatment that consists of pharmaceuticals.

No need to fear naturopathic remedies The side effects from medications are reported on the CDC website. The numbers are in the hundreds of thousands for pharmaceuticals. The rates for supplements

are reported there as well. Don’t look too hard because there aren’t any side effects from supplements. Often there is a question about why the FDA doesn’t regulate supplements. Actually, it does. The FDA doesn’t need to regulate it as vigorously as it needs to monitor pharmaceuticals. Anything that becomes a mortal danger to the public is taken off the market by the FDA. That is their job. The tryptophan issue years ago caused a few deaths and was immediately banned. It turned out to be a contamination that caused the problem. Tryptophan was banned for years even though it wasn’t the cause of the fatalities. There were, however, other remedies that could do the same thing that tryptophan was prescribed for.

Are there supplements that aren’t what they say they are? Absolutely. Just like the food you buy at the grocery store or online, these are buyer-beware purchases. They probably won’t kill you, but may not be what you think. This does not mean that patients should be taking multiple doses of drugs and supplements and think that it isn’t going to harm them. Some supplements potentiate pharmaceuticals causing the drug to be more potent. Some pharmaceuticals render some supplements ineffective. Anyone taking both should consult with practitioners in both medical practices for possible interactions. The point here is that if you want information on a type of treatment, or modality, you should consult the type of practitioner who is trained and has expertise in that modality. You wouldn’t ask your car mechanic how to fix your TV. The same goes for your healthcare. Ask

the practitioner who knows the treatment you are asking about. Never accept there is only one answer to the treatment of any health condition. It’s your job to look for all the possible answers and then decide which one is right for you. Educate yourself on what else is available for your treatment. Get the best of all the treatments available for you and your family. Dr. Ann Aresco is a licensed naturopathic physician at ProNatural Physicians Group in Berlin and is accepting new patients. MONEY MATTERS

MORE WAYS TO

Is this a good time to refinance? Interest rates recently hit alltime lows as the Federal Reserve made cuts to mitigate the financial impacts of COVID-19. If you’re a homeowner with a monthly mortgage payment, you might be wondering if now is a good time to refinance. While a lower interest rate may yield a more affordable monthly payment, there are other factors to consider. Here are seven questions to ask yourself : Will you qualify for a better rate? The best interest rates are reserved for borrowers with optimal credit. If you are one of the millions of Americans who has filed for unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 outbreak, your employment status is not included in your credit report. However, your credit score can be affected by many factors such as if you suddenly carry more credit card debt, have missed or made late payments or have applied for new credit during this challenging time.

What will your new loan cost? A lower interest rate and lower monthly payment do not always add up to savings in the long run. Your loan will have closing costs and fees. Factor in prepayment penalties, if applicable. Costs often vary by lender, so it may be a good idea to shop around for the best rate. Talk to your financial advisor or reference one of the many online refinance calculators to help you determine the breakeven period, or how long it will take before you realize savings with a new loan.

Will your new loan eliminate lender insurance? If your home’s market value has increased enough to grow your equity, refinancing with a conventional mortgage can potentially remove private mortgage insurance (PMI) sooner. Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans require mortgage insurance regardless of equity.

YES! WE’RE OPEN! CALL NOW: (203) 888-5560 Why is NOW the Best Time to Book Your Carpet, Rug, Floor & Upholstery Cleaning? Right now, I’m sitting in my home office wondering how our small family-owned, local business can survive this, and how you folks in our area are faring as well. So, I’ve come up with a smooth, trouble-free way for you to get your carpet, rugs, floors, and upholstery cleaned at the BIGGEST savings EVER. No, we won’t be re-running a special like this again! Up to 25% Off on Carpet, Floors, Rugs, and Upholstery Cleaning Since things are opening up a bit, we know that a lot of our clients are looking to have their carpets, rugs, floors, and upholstery cleaned but may still be a bit hesitant about having a service company in their home. So, we wanted to share just what we are doing to keep our clients & their families safe.

Now EVERY DAY we completely sanitize all our equipment when it returns to the shop, all equipment is also treated with our Microbe Shield Protectant which keeps our equipment Germ-Free for up to 30 days. Equipment is also treated with a disinfectant in between jobs as a precaution. Additionally, when our Cleaning Specialists arrive at your home, they will be wearing a face mask, booties and will respect social distancing. If necessary, they will also wear hooded coveralls and gloves as well. We want you to feel safe so if you have concerns let us know and we will work it out.

Can you afford your current home? If you’re having trouble making your loan payments, refinancing is not the only way to find relief. As an alternative to refinancing a house you’re struggling to afford, you might explore downsizing to a property with a mortgage your budget can handle.

Are you trying to get out of an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM)? Switching from an ARM to a fixed-rate mortgage can mean more predictable monthly payments.

These uncertain times reinforce the importance of financial planning. Talk to your financial advisor for guidance on how to build equity in your financial future.

Are you seeking a new term length? A shorter-term loan may offer better rates, but it can mean a higher monthly payment. If your income is threatened by the current situation, this may not be a good time to increase your monthly obligations. On the flip side, you may want lower monthly payments that come with a longer-term loan. Although

Ned Lamont, as he stood outside the Waterbury branch where DMV customers with prescheduled appointments waited in their cars until being notified electronically to come inside the building. Branches in Bridgeport, Enfield and New Britain also partially reopened Tuesday for new registration and license services. As part of the Berlin Lions 1st Responder Appreciation program, Lions members delivered breakfast to Berlin police. Because this was an early-morning event, the Lions were able to accommodate both the night shift coming off duty and the day shift starting out.

New registration services will begin June 30 at the Wethersfield, Willimantic, and Danbury branches. All in-person services now require an appointment, which can be made online.

Meanwhile, additional locations reopened Tuesday for learner’s permit knowledge
