Realtor loving new home
THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE
Nicole Zappone The Citizen
After a somewhat rocky start, due to construction challenges, owner and broker Rob Levine is ready to move forward with the newly renovated HART SargisBreen Real Estate office at 1020 Farmington Ave., Unit D.
House of Heroes Connecticut volunteers spruced up the home of local Army Air Corps veteran Richard Glidden on Saturday, July 16. “Our 93-year-old Berlin veteran could not say thank you enough for the yeoman work we did today clearing his property, landscaping and repairing/upgrading his deteriorating deck,” House of Heroes Connecticut House of Heroes Connecticut, Facebook stated. See Glidden’s story on Page 6.
Local cyclists to ride in Pan-Mass Challenge Press Release
NEEDHAM, Mass. – Kensington residents Rich Crowe and John Ladd are among the 158 Connecticut cyclists to sign on for the 2022 Pan-Mass Challenge,
which takes place Aug. 6 and 7. Altogether, more than 6,000 riders will pedal in this bike-a-thon featuring one- and two-day routes from 25 to 210 miles, with the goal of topping last year’s record-breaking gift
and raising $66 million for cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. With 16 route options, the event is designed to cater to all levels of cycling and
fundraising ability. Most participate in honor of a family member or friend fighting cancer and more than 800 riders and volunteers are cancer survivors
To mark this chapter in his professional career, Levine celebrated with a grand opening ribbon-cutting on Friday, June 24. HART Sargis-Breen Real Estate has five locations, and Levine owns three, in Berlin, Newington and West Hartford. “I’m excited to see you all here today, as this has been a long process of getting up and running,” Levine said in welcoming remarks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “It’s been a labor of love, to be honest.”

The town is looking to make our Board of Education partisan. This is one of the worst decisions that could be made.
I have had the opportunity to serve the Berlin community as a member of the Board of Education since 2015. What inspired me to run was that our town has a non-partisan board. I was able to pull my petition, get signatures, talk to parents and voters, and earn my seat. This process creates a level of investment in the role and allows me to make decisions based on what I can wholeheartedly support when questioned by a member of our community.
“Exteriors are my specialty, and interiors my masterpiece!”
Our students do not need politics in their education. They do not need political appointees on a school board attempting to indoctrinate them with political beliefs, agendas and propaganda. Furthermore, political appointees are not beholden to you, the people. They are beholden to the directives of their political superiors. And appointees know they must follow those directives or risk losing party support in the future. You will never know who they are taking orders from and you will have no say. It would be shameful and disgusting to allow our Board of Education to fall into the hands of political parties who only have their respective political agendas in mind and not the well-being of our students. Please attend the Town Council meeting on Tuesday, July 26 at 7 p.m. to speak in support of keeping our BOE non-partisan. Peter Zarabozo

As a voter, I have a party affiliation, but I would not seek endorsement from a town committee to represent the schools. As a board member, it is my responsibility, as outlined in the Connecticut Statute, Chapter 170, Sec. 10-220, to “best serve the interest of the school district.” Political affiliation makes this more complex, more difficult to fulfill.
The decisions the BOE makes impact the children, and parents trust the board to do that. Though some parents are politically active in town, not every parent in our community represents one party or the other. It is not fair to the students of Berlin Public Schools, or their families, to bring politics into education.

We should not allow the local political committees to have control over our Board of Education. If the board is allowed to become partisan, instead of having candidates who are interested in serving in order to better our school system, we will have political appointees who are only there to push political agendas that are assigned to them from their respective political agents at the state and federal level.

Our nation is so politically divided. We do not need to bring this into our schools. If there is a demand for candidate information prior to the election, there are many ways the town can share that. Making the board partisan is not a solution. Please consider voicing your concerns at the Tuesday, July 26 Town Council meeting. Julia Dennis Board of Education chair

In Brief Courageous Conversations Berlin-Peck Memorial Library is offering a conversational skills program to help promote connection and understanding in a politically polarized society. On the evening of Thursday, Aug. 11, the library will provide an opportunity for people to practice open, respectful talking and listening in a one-on-one format. Fill out the registration questionnaire at berlinpeck.org to be matched with someone of differing political views and to be assigned a conversation topic and time slot. A non-partisan BOE allows any candidate to run on an even playing field without being beholden to the political will of any political party. It also keeps the political pressures and influences of these parties out of the board, out of the classroom, and away from our children.

City Manager Timothy Coon, who spoke on behalf of tax assessor Melinda Fonda, said the issue stems from the city’s state statutory obligations to verify that properties owned by nonprofit groups are being used for purposes that qualify the properties for tax exempt status. “Charitable organizations have to prove to a municipality their property is eligible under whatever category
that they are under — whether charitable, educational, historical, etc. — all of them have to prove to a municipality that whatever property they’ve assessed fits the tax exempt status,” Coon said. He said that the YMCA, for a number of its properties, did not initially provide enough documentation for city officials to determine their tax exempt statuses. “We were trying to get that information,” Coon said. After that information was provided, both sides were
able to reach an agreement to establish that those properties “are indeed tax exempt,” Coon said.

Scarpati said his position regarding the assessment of properties owned by nonprofit groups that serve the city has not changed.
“There has to be evidence that the city has to have on file that this property is being utilized for what your charter says,” Coon said.
