Book on sunken ship inspires local songwriter By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff

about the SS Central America, which sank in 1857. Rich co-wrote “Ship of Gold” with Middletown's Dean Coutsouridis, front.
“I was with my brother on the water heading to Block Island and he said I need to read Ship of Gold,” Rich said. “When I got home, I went to the library and I couldn’t put it down.” By December, Rich had written the lyrics and met Coutsouridis in the studio.
“We collaborated,” Rich said. “We got a cello player and came up with an interesting arrangement. “We’ve gotten good local reviews from friends, family, acquaintances and local musicians.” See Songwriter, A17
“It took first place. After that, everybody has been asking me to do them,” she said. The Berlin resident started making pies for friends and family, then started selling them at the Southington farmers market and the Apple Harvest Festival. In a few weeks, she plans to open a bakery on Main Street in Southington. “Once I have this location, I’ll be able to produce a lot more,” Lastrina said. She’s finishing work at the storefront in the Dollar Tree Plaza at 190 Main St. that will be home to Nonnie’s Pies and Creations. Lastrina’s grandchildren call her “Nonnie” and she said if she ever had a bakery, she’d name it that. One of Lastrina’s classics — pistachio pie — has been honed over 25 years with frank appraisals from family members.

“They can be brutally honest,” Lastrina said. “Then I got it to the point where they said, ‘Don’t change anything.’” She’s often tinkering with recipes, but has gotten good reviews on creations such as chocolate peanut butter pie and coconut cream pie. Lastrina described baking as a passion and said she loves to see people enjoying her food. “It’s unbelievable the joy it brings me,” she said. See Nonnie’s, A16 R232002
The 73-year-old Kensington resident released the single “Ship of Gold” — which he co-wrote with Middletown’s Dean Coutsouridis. The song has received great response since its Aug. 10 release. Songwriter Dayton Rich’s latest single was inspired by a best seller about sunken treasure.
Ship of Gold was inspired by Gary Kinder’s New York Times best seller, “Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea.” The Ship of Gold refers to the SS Central America, which sank in 1857 in a hurricane off the Carolina Coast.

7-on-7, no-contact football among DPH changes proposed
As the CIAC works with the Connecticut Department of Public Health to hammer out a fall sports plan, moving volleyball outside and shifting football to the no-tackle, 7on-7 format of summer passing leagues were among the recommendations the health department gave to the CIAC in a letter dated Sunday.
That closed the door on the option of a late winter/early spring “floating season” that some other states, such as Massachusetts, have set up for football and any other sport that gets canceled this fall.

Each year, the end of summer brings a flurry of activity to public schools across the country and here in Berlin. This year, the flurry of activity has been nonstop since June, as district staff have prepared for a safe reopening of the school facilities and for multiple possibilities, including in-person, remote, hybrid and distance learning. The recent tropical storm has also triggered some early change in foliage. The intermittent heavy rain has also been a factor. The trimming of trees after the storm also puts a lot of stress on trees. “Another thing that I’ve noticed is a lot of this has happened on trees that have been trimmed,” Lessor said. Lastly, bug infestations and pests can also impact trees. There is some good news, however. “You’re getting more trees that are extremely stressed from the drought so the problem is we will continue to see fewer (mature) trees around, but of course, the circle of life is also giving opportunity for new trees so the next generation of trees in the coming years will take over,” Lessor said.

Teachers unions disagree on delaying start of school By Matthew Zabierek Record-Journal staff
MERIDEN — The state’s largest teachers union is calling for Connecticut to follow other neighboring states by pushing the start of school back two weeks until mid-September, but the union representing city teachers is taking a differing stance.
The Connecticut Education Association, which boasts more than 160 local affiliates, released its own school reopening guidelines last week. It recommended delaying the start of school by two weeks or until mid-September to “to improve and expand remote learning.”

“Starting school in August with very high temperatures and humidity, no air conditioning in most classrooms, and trying to enforce maskwearing for five or more hours in those conditions is not practicable. Instead, use the time to refine and provide training for enhanced distance learning,” CEA’s Safe Learning Plan reads. Rhode Island and Massachusetts recently decided to push the start of school back a couple of weeks, the plan notes. CEA affiliates around the state include unions in Wallingford, Southington, Cheshire, Berlin, Plainville, North Haven, Middlefield and Durham. Teachers in Meriden are represented by the American Federation of Teachers Connecticut, a statewide labor federation
with more than 90 local unions throughout the state. Lauren Mancini-Averitt, president of the Meriden Federation of Teachers, doesn’t agree with the call to push the start of school back. “We’ve done everything to make this opening as safe as we can, and we all know it comes with risk. But it will in two weeks from now, too,” she said. Meriden’s first full day of school for students is scheduled for Sept. 8, with halfdays scheduled for Sept. 3 and 4. For cash-strapped districts with fewer resources, like Meriden, Mancini-Averitt said delaying the start of school may not be ideal because it could lead to more spending.

“The two weeks does not help with the fact that there’s a huge disparity in the state of Connecticut between the have and have-not districts,’ she said. I encourage you to cast your vote for JoAnn AngelicoStetson for state representative, 30th district. Julie Erickson
Editor : Now that the primary votes have been counted, we need to look to November to elect a person who will serve for the good of the people and who will represent our town well. We have two candidates, JoAnn Angelico-Stetson and Donna Veach. It has been interesting to see that the Republican Party claims that Veach brings experience – nine months of participation on the Town Council versus three years and nine months for Angelico-Stetson? A person who has worked with development and marketing versus Angelico-Stetson who, as a senior paralegal, has an excellent understanding of the law and how it will affect our citizens? Gaylord Physical Therapy combines technology and talent to help people of all ages achieve their goals and return to peak performance following an orthopedic injury or surgery.
JoAnn is not afraid to question the status quo or members of her own party in order to move things forward. You can count on JoAnn to be resourceful, flexible and supportive. She listens with her head and her heart, and is fair. Her selflessness in giving back to the community is bar none and I know she will bring her knowledge, concern for others, commitment to social issues and tenacity to the state legislature.

Angelico-Stetson has also shown her compassion throughout the pandemic by bringing food to our seniors in need. We, as humans are not perfect, but JoAnn AngelicoStetson is the perfect person to represent the town of Berlin. Please join me in voting for her on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Karen A. Pagliaro
True public servant Editor : I write this letter to support JoAnn Angelico-Stetson for state representative for the 30th district. I had the experience and privilege of serving with JoAnn when she served on the Berlin Board of Education. When JoAnn joined the Board of Education I did not know her very well, but I soon learned to admire and respect her. JoAnn was everything one would want in an elected official. She was hardworking, always prepared for meet-

ings. She was unfailingly honest and demonstrated the highest level of ethical behavior in all of her dealings. JoAnn was thoughtful in arriving at decisions, and listened to all arguments and evidence before coming to a conclusion. And, contrary to what too often characterizes our current political and public debate, JoAnn was civil and courteous to everyone who came before our board.
More surgical expertise. Right in your neighborhood.
But most of all, JoAnn never forgot the reason why she was in office, and who it was her duty to represent. JoAnn pursued the public good, an old-fashioned concept, perhaps, but one that we desperately need back in government. And she always remembered that she was placed in office to represent all citizens, not just those who voted for her. During her tenure on the Board of Education, JoAnn Angelico-Stetson was – in every sense of the word – a public servant. We would be very fortunate if she were to serve us as state representative. Your new voice Editor : I would like to congratulate Donna Veach on becoming the Republican candidate for state representative for the 30th district. However, there is no time for victory laps, as the general election is just around the corner. Donna is a strong conservative candidate who will go to Hartford to be your new voice. We must elect strong conservatives and send a message to the governor to stop wasteful spending. Donna’s experience in running both for- and not-forprofit businesses is unique. She understands the importance of balancing a budget and that you can’t just tax your way out of debt. It will take creative thinking and a strong will to help move our state out of the red. Over the next couple of months, you will learn more about Donna and how she is decidedly different from her opponent. The Democrats have held the governorship and the majority in this state for too long. We can’t afford to have another Democrat fill this seat and be the governor’s yes person. Southington and Berlin Republicans have much in common, including the desire to change this seat from a D to an R. We have one of our best opportunities in

Return to sanity Editor : With an exciting primary win behind her, Republican candidate for the 30th district (Berlin and Southington) Donna Veach and her unified team are looking forward to the general election in November. An exciting election season is assured with this presidential race, and that will translate to record high participation all the way down the ballot. The differences in the candidates for president are as stark as the they are in our state legislative races. Years of one party (Democrat) rule in Hartford have crippled our state with high taxes, excessive regulations and an ineffective and bloated state government. We need to send a lot of strong, principles conservatives to Hartford to push back against this reckless and irresponsible government.

VIRTUAL PROGRAM
‘Success with Hydrangeas’ In an effort to promote public safety and to continue their charitable commitment, Kensington Garden Club will offer its first virtual program in September, which is open to the public, free of charge. The topic is “Success with Hydrangeas” presented by Lorraine Ballato. From 18inch, container-sized, reblooming beauties to 8-foot seasonal explosions of multicolored zing, there is a hydrangea for every garden. This lively one-hour talk examines multiple varieties, their proper care, fertilizing, pruning requirements and so much more. To register for the Thursday, Sept. 17 virtual program, visit the Berlin-Peck Library program calendar, berlinpeck.org/calendar/. Ballato, an advanced master gardener, shares her love of plants through lectures, social media writings, magazine articles and pho-
tographs which are published in Connecticut Gardener, Edible Nutmeg, and elsewhere. She is an instructor at the New York Botanical Garden and in the Connecticut Master Gardener Program as well as for the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut. Kensington Garden Club operates exclusively on a nonprofit basis for charitable and educational purposes such as this latest free offering, and for the well-being of the community and public benefit. All profits go back to the community to promote civic beauty, encourage improvement of public spaces, raise awareness of environmental concerns and advance the art of floral design and horticulture. COMMENTARY
‘How Not to Die’ is a must-read
Not that ND’s don’t write books, but who reads them? Not many people know what an ND is.
are going to die of a lung disease. You have been told this so many times it is no surprise. But if you quit smoking and begin eating the food he suggests then there is a chance you will die of nothing. Load up on broccoli is his suggestion for the chance to reverse the disease process after you quit. It isn’t a break-even process if you still smoke and eat broccoli.
This one is written by a medical doctor in easy-toread English. Greger leaves the research lingo for the back of the book. The title says it all: “How Not to Die.” In other words, how to die (we all will) of nothing.
There is so much more that Greger takes the time to tell you about. The book looks like it is a lot to read, but if you take the chapter on your condition, it’s a short story; like how not to die from kidney disease.
The one fact the doctors have in their favor is that we all die. A 100 percent mortality rate. Every patient you treat is going to die at some point. This book tells you how to die of nothing, or know you are dying and you know the reason; like smoking.
You should also read the chapter on how not to die from iatrogenic causes (or how not to die from a doctor’s care).
The New York Times bestseller “How Not to Die” is an amazing book. Written by an MD, Michael Greger, it puts all the thoughts and wishes of the naturopathic doctor (ND) between the two covers.
If you smoke, you know you
Naturopathic doctors are the exception to that statement. They want you to get off your pharmaceuticals. They want you to eat whole foods, exercise, sleep well, and, in
Through Aug. 31, the Berlin Police Department will be out in force looking for distracted drivers as part of the U Drive. U Text. U Pay. Campaign, a high-visibility effort to enforce distracted-driving laws. Drivers are continuously ignoring their responsibilities behind the wheel, and distracted driving is a growing and deadly threat on our roadways.
“We have created an innovative event designed to be safe and fun within the limitations of the coronavirus and related safety protocols,” said Klingberg Family Centers vice president Mark Johnson.
Dr. Walter Willett, chair of nutrition at Harvard University, agrees with Greger. “The inherent problem is that most pharmacological strategies do not address the underlying causes of ill health in western countries, which are not drug deficiencies.”
keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.
Distracted driving is a real problem. During this enforcement period, officers will be ticketing anyone who is texting or on their phone while behind the wheel. The bottom line is if you text and drive, you will pay.

Says Greger: “Unfortunately, modern medicine isn’t nearly as effective as most people think. Doctors excel at treating acute conditions, such as mending broken bones and curing infections, but for chronic diseases, which are the leading causes of death and disability, conventional medicine doesn’t have much to offer, and, in fact, can sometimes do more harm than good.”
If you have a chronic disease, read the book. If your family has a history of some chronic diseases, read the book and avoid suffering from that disease. If you don’t want to read the book, take a short cut and see a naturopathic physician. If you have a bag full of pharmaceuticals and you want to get off them, do one of the above.

A few days after CEA released its detailed reopening recommendations this week, the American Federation of Teachers Connecticut distributed a list of 13 “safety principles” for reopening, which included a lot of the same safety measures that CEA is lobbying for.
