By Nicole Zappone The Citizen In 1983, the Los Angeles Police Department recognized that enforcement alone was not enough to slow the rising tide of illicit drug use in the city. So a partnership was estab lished between the L.A.P.D. and the Los Ange les Unified School District to develop a drug resistance education program for elementary school students. Today, that program, D.A.R.E., Drug Abuse Re sistance Education, is still going strong, across the D.A.R.E.country.arrived in Berlin in 1987, and over the ensuing decades, more than 6,000 local fifth graders have graduated from the program.

Fighting against the status quo
In my two years, I have seen countless at tempts to create new ways to tax residents, from shopping online to taxing trucks that carry products to our residents, and every thing in between.
Editor: I’ve been following our State Representative Donna Veach and have been very impressed by her commit ment and dedication. Along with being a legislator, she also serves the residents of Berlin as a Town Councilor, all while maintaining a fulltime job. As a legislator, she serves on the Judiciary, Education and Planning & Development committees. Additionally, she is a mem ber of the Italian-American, Sportsman’s, Conservative, Women’s and Culture and Tourism caucuses, and still finds time to support many local events and chari table Representativeorganizations.Veach has gone above and beyond to serve her constituents and was recognized the past two years for her 100 per cent voting record.
Editor: It is with a great deal of en thusiasm and joy that I write in support of two wonderful candidates the Berlin Democrats have put forward to represent the people of Berlin, Southington, Meri den and Cheshire Denise McNair for the 30th District and Jack Fazzino for the 83rd District. Both have the in tegrity, education, back ground and understanding

In my two years as your State Representa tive, I have talked to, and had conversations with, many people from around our district.
In my two years, I have seen us weaken our judicial system to allow juveniles with ex tensive criminal records who continue to commit crimes be released without virtually any punishment. I have watched as more and more legislation is geared toward pro tecting the rights of those who have chosen to break the law over those who are sworn to protect it and the victims whose lives have been negatively im Inpacted.mytwo years as a law maker, I have seen and learned a lot. If we want to return Con necticut back to a place where businesses prosper, residents feel safe, and we don’t nickel and dime our tax payers to the point where they are forced to choose whether or not they can afford to live or retire here, we have a long way to go. We need legislators who will stand up against the status quo and rubber stamp policies that have negatively impacted Con necticut’s residents for far too long.

CANDIDATE COMMENTARY By State Rep. Donna Veach
On Nov. 8, there is no better choice than Donna Veach.
I have listened to stories from families who are struggling to make it month to month due to the rising costs of groceries, gas, electricity, home heating oil, and so many other basic necessities. I have heard from people whose lives have been affected by the theft of their cars, their catalytic con verters, and other property-related crimes.
Residents of the 30th District have my word that I will continue to fight to restore com mon sense and fiscal restraint back to Hart ford.

Editor: Voters in the 83rd House District can have a strong voice in Hartford and have an impact on our region and state by voting for Berlin Democrat Jack Fazzino on Nov. 8. A Town Councilor since 2021, Jack has a proven record of addressing the is sues and getting the job done in the best interests of those he serves. His educa tional background, experi ence as a lawyer and service to the community has led to this next step voicing the concerns and interests of residents in Hartford.

Carol Yorker The right stuff Editor: We voters in the 30th District are fortunate to be able to elect Denise McNair as our next State Representative. As a life-long resident, she knows and loves our com munity and understands its needs. She is intelligent, cre ative, principled, consider ate, straight-talking and car ing. Her excellent service as our Town Manager was without complaint. Everyone who deals with her respects her. As our representative in the General Assembly we can be assured that she will ably represent the interests of Berlin and Southington. She has all the right stuff to do an outstanding job for us!
The right choice Editor: There is no denying Con necticut has become an ex tremely difficult place in which to live and raise a family. What this state doesn't need are more elect ed officials who promise to look out for us, only to look the other way after an elec Ition.have no doubts that our State Representative, Donna Veach, will continue to pri oritize the issues that are im portant to the people of our Re-electingcommunity.Donna Veach is the right choice! By Lou Arata Remember when White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki claimed it would be “unfair and absurd” for companies to raise costs in response to the Biden ad ministration raising the cor porate tax rate? That’s how they think. Forbes noted that it was “important to remember that corporate taxes must be paid by people,” and, “Any corporate tax increase will be paid by either sharehold ers/owners, employees in the form of lower wages, or customers in the form of Iprhigherices.”suppose ev eryone who would exceptknewmiddleconsiderebedclassthat,Press Secretary Psaki. Higher prices are hitting ev ery family and the cuts being made to the family budget are real. You’re feeling the loss of your purchasing pow er because of inflation, far more than those at the top. What can be done to provide real monetary relief to the middle class and those living on fixed incomes? For one, I support stopping the money giveaways. This is a Democrat red herring, plain and simple, attempting to buy votes. This giveaway sweepstakes we’ve all been witness to is unsustainable. Unless, of course, you con tinue to print trillions upon trillions of dollars, out of thin air, increasing our super ballooned national debt. But that just feeds the infla tion inferno even more, making the dollars you do have to spend buy less. Ei ther way, you’re on the los ing Jobs, end.and people working, actually creates wealth and builds to stabilize the econ omy, both regionally and nationally, not unexpected “free” checks incentivizing Mandatessloth. and taxes on our small businesses put for ward by the Democrat elite in Hartford will only add to present costs. Do we want more of the same?
It is my belief that the last thing you need to worry about while you and your family are trying to figure out how you’re going to make ends meet is to be constantly stressing about the safety of yourself, your loved ones and your proper ty.

waste of tax-payer money. We are, in essence, paying our police to essentially not be able to do their job. I will support improved legislation reversing this brutal trend. It’s a clear choice. A Demo crat will increase the size and cost of government. I will fight to bring down costs, trim the size, scope, and cost of government and look to root out corruption. I am running for State Rep resentative, 83rd District (Meriden, Cheshire, Berlin) and I ask you for your vote and your support, to bring common-sense legislation back to all the citizens of Connecticut.
From A4 Arata In Brief
I fully support law enforce ment and their efforts to provide safety for the pubic that they serve. The Police Accountability Act has taken away many of the tools po lice need to do their job, not just the qualified immunity provision. Criminals taken into custody, many with multiple prior arrests, are quickly released back out onto the street only to repeat their law-breaking activities. Just last year, more than 40 percent of Americans some 130 million people were living in a county struck by a climate-related disaster, according to analysis from the Washington Post. Disasters can happen anywhere, any time. “More powerful climate driven occurrences are happening across the U.S. than ever before,” said Mario Bruno, CEO, American Red Cross Con necticut and Rhode Island Region. “In fact, there have been more climate-re lated disasters in the nation over the past two decades than in any other country. It’s vital that everyone take steps to be prepared.”
The Berlin VFW Auxiliary would like to thank residents for their generosity recently at the VFW’s "Poppy" drive at the Berlin Stop & Shop. It was a "Big Poppy" success!

Importance of school Area school administrators, teachers and health profes sionals are happy this school year is going to look a little bit more normal.
If someone gets monkeypox, Lonczak said their local health department will play an integral role in working with them to get through the virus. For schools, she said they will be following any guidance out there, especial ly when it comes to disin fecting touched objects. “All the things that they nor mally would do are wonder ful to combat anything from cold and flu season down to any of the more rare things,” Lonczak said. “But typically the risk is very low because this really is going to fall un der a disease that is con tracted with really close skin-to-skin contact.”

“Housing advocates and some Connecticut lawmak ers view the lack of spending on local housing initiatives so far as a significant mis step,” says the Mirror report. “I would have expected the percentage of money put to ward affordable housing to be more, because that is a very critical priority,” said state Sen. Saud Anwar, who is on the legislature’s Hous ing Committee. In looking at numerous Record-Journal stories over the past few months regard ing how towns in the central Connecticut corridor are al locating the money, there’s scant evidence that afford able housing is even a con sideration. 203-317-2312 New Cardiologist: Zain Ahmed
Connecticut municipalities received $1.5 billion in fed eral funds via the American Rescue Plan Act. They have budgeted roughly 1% to sup port housing needs, says a recent report from the Con necticut Mirror. ARPA stimulus funds were meant to help communities with economic recovery af ter the pandemic. Towns have been taking a variety of approaches to how their share of the money will be used. Committees have been formed, guidelines have been crafted, priorities set. But there is little evidence that affordable housing is on the list, according to the Mir ror report by journalists An drew Brown and Ginny TheirMonk.coverage states that “data collected by the feder al government in April shows Connecticut’s 169 municipalities budgeted roughly $15 million around 1% of their share of the federal money for housing-related projects.” Whether this recent data analysis reveals a blind spot or willful blindness, it’s clear there’s lack vision when ad dressing this crucial need. According to Brown and Monk, ARPA rules allow “local officials to spend the funds on rent and mortgage assistance, housing-related planning, energy efficiency upgrades for people’s homes, assistance for those experiencing homelessness, or the development and preservation of affordable housing.”

The majority of the housingrelated spending is taking place in cities, such as New Haven and Bridgeport, “where most of the afford able housing stock already exists,” Brown and Monk write. A few smaller and mid-sized municipalities have spent significant amounts of stimulus money on housing. Clinton, for ex ample, budgeted almost 9% of its $3.5 million for hous ing concerns. In an interview with the Mir ror, Christie Stewart, director of the Fairfield County Cen ter for Housing Opportunity, called affordable housing a “political lightning rod.” Stewart offered damning in sight: “That’s kind of all you need to know about Con necticut. If you want to know where Connecticut priori tizes its housing affordability challenges, take a look at the budget. I think that’s true at every level of government.”

We’re not going to point fin gers at any particular town, this is a statewide deficit in critical planning. The Mirror story states that data collect ed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury shows most Connecticut’s municipalities have yet to budget any ARPA money for housing-related “projects.Manyhave instead chosen to use the federal money to pay for things like road re pairs, stormwater upgrades, water and sewer improve ments, public building reno vations, police surveillance technology, small business grants and local recreation projects,” says the Mirror.
Politics, planning, prioritiz ing, it’s easy enough to iden tify the obstacles to creating more affordable housing op tions. Finding solutions should be just as doable.
