Meet the new Boss By Nadya Korytnikova The Citizen
The Berlin Turnpike is home to a new familyowned restaurant. The Boss Grill held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, Nov. 6 to celebrate its debut in the community. Food drives step up holiday efforts By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff
Area food pantry officials see demand spiking with more families caring for children quarantining from schools or facing financial hardship amid the pandemic, just as the annual food drives they rely on are having difficulty continuing safely.
“Things are tough right now for a lot of folks, so we’re seeing our numbers increase again,” said Sue Heald, food pantry manager for Master’s Manna in Wallingford. “… It’s a combination of everything. For some people they’re unemployed and their unemployment benefits are running out.”

The restaurant's history goes back to 2008 when owners Ken and Roberta Robitaille began dishing out food from their Blanche’s Roadside Grill lunch truck in Newington. In just a year and half they grew a large customer base that motivated them to expand and open The Boss Grill in Hartford.

Letters to the Editor Editor : The Berlin VFW Post 10732 would like to say a special thank-you to Chris McCormack, who stepped up to
help the Berlin VFW replace its leaky, 30-year old roof. Chris and his brother Willy came in and worked tirelessly for a day-and-a-half to remove our old roof and help replace it.
Chris offered to help the Berlin VFW to honor Korean War veteran and contractor Robert Dornfried of Berlin. Chris started in the carpentry business with Bob’s help and, after Bob passed away, wanted to “pay it forward.”
Letters Policy
Chris was able to recruit John Cyr Construction out of Avon to join the construction team. Veterans of VFW Post 10732 humbly say thank-you for your professionalism and generous support. It is always wonderful to know that community and kindness are alive and well in Berlin.
Email letters to news@theberlincitizen.com; mail to 500 South Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450 or fax to 203-639-0210. The Citizen will print only one letter per person each month. Letters should be approximately 300 words. We reserve the right to edit letters. Letters should be on topics of general interest to the community. We do not list names of people, organizations and businesses being thanked. Letters must be signed and names will appear in print. Include a phone number so The Citizen can contact you for verification. Letters must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday to be considered for publication the following Thursday.
Taking great photos requires imagination, patience, skill; and Berlin High School freshman Madelyn Lazzara has all of that. After reviewing more than 200 submissions, a panel of professional photographers recognized Lazzara as one of the top participants in the ASAP! Celebration of Young Photographers contest. The judges selected 60 photos, including Lazzara’s image Natural Mask, to be displayed at a professional large-scale art exhibition in December. In Lazzara’s photo, an autumn leaf covers the lower half of her younger sister's face, resembling a medical mask. Lazzara said she wanted to convey a message that “nature always has a way to protect us, often in ways that we don't expect.”

When planning your estate it is important to understand the difference between probate and non-probate assets. Probate is the process through which a court determines how to distribute your property after you die. Some assets are distributed to heirs by the court (probate assets) and some assets bypass the court process and go directly to your beneficiaries (non-probate assets). The probate process includes filing a will and appointing an executor or administrator, collecting assets, paying bills, filing taxes, distributing property to heirs, and filing a final account. If a person dies with a Will, then the probate court makes sure that the assets are distributed in accordance with the Will. If a person dies without a Will, then state law determines who inherits probate assets.

“I focus on groups and people that really need help,” said Myjak. “We take bottles and cans to the redemption
Myjak started Cans-4-ACause after finding out that 50 percent of beverage containers in Connecticut are not exchanged for their five cent deposit. When Myjak discussed the reasons for such a low redemption rate he said that most people either “don’t want to be bothered with the machines” or think that “if they put the containers into recycling that indeed someone is redeeming them.” “And my favorite is when they say — ‘It’s only a nickel!’” But these nickels add up. According to the state Department of Revenue Services, each year $36 million worth of bottle deposits go unclaimed. That’s about $10 for every man, woman and child in the state.
Nadya Korytnikova, The Citizen
Compared to its first year of operation, in 2020 Cans-4-ACause increased donations to local nonprofits by 233 percent. During a recent two-week stretch, Myjak received some 25,000 containers, which will be redeemed for $1,250. He intends to further spread awareness about his organization and expand the coverage area by collecting bottles from Glastonbury, East Hartford, Meriden and Southington.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
Winter season delayed CHESHIRE — The 2020-21 high school winter sports season won’t be starting any time before the middle of January. The CIAC Board of Control voted Tuesday morning to postpone the winter season until Jan. 19. The decision was driven by rising cases of COVID-19 that have recently prompted some CIAC member schools to pull back from in-person learning. “The reason behind the CIAC Board’s decision is due to the increasing COVID numbers within the state of Connecticut as well as the difficult decision that many schools are facing in moving to a full-distance model at this time,” CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini said in a video statement Tuesday. “The CIAC Board of Control continues to place in-person learning and the health and safety of our school communities as a top priori-
ty,” Lungarini added. “In taking today’s action, we believe we are continuing to hold to that standard and we look forward to seeing all of our student-athletes back in action after the first of the year.”
More outstanding cancer care. Right in your neighborhood.
Tuesday’s decision was met with mixed emotions by area athletic directors. They empathized with student-athletes. They understood the CIAC’s rationale. “Obviously, it’s disappointing,” Lyman Hall AD Steve Baker said. “I feel terrible for the kids. Today was another difficult day.” “I understand the decision,” he continued. “If you look at the numbers in Wallingford, if you look at the numbers in the state and nationally, I understand the decision. The safety of our kids is paramount. Hopefully, we will be able to get this going later in the (school) year.” The Board of Control met on Tuesday ostensibly to review and approve a winter sports plan the CIAC had drawn up See Season, A17

Sicily, that’s why I named it the Boss Grill,” Roberta Robitaille said. The restaurant embodies its motto: “If we have the ingredients to make the food the way you want, we will do it,” and is known for its hearty meals, high-quality products and fair prices. “We offer brand-name everything,” said Roberta Robitaille. “If it's ketchup, it’s Heinz; if it’s barbeque sauce, it’s Sweet Baby Ray's. We don’t do generic anything, and we don't mark up our food. We are not here to make a million dollars, we are here to provide people with quality and value.” Aside from big portions, Boss Grill customers can expect spotless tables, silverware and plates. “If you’ve got time to lean, you’ve got time to clean” is a motto that staff members stand by. “People eat with their eyes,” said Chris Robitaille, son of Ken and Roberta. “When you have everything clean, the food tastes better, people are happiest, they feel safer.”
The Boss Grill, located at 224 Berlin Turnpike, is open for business. The restaurant held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, Nov. 6. Pictured, from left: Berlin Mayor Mark Kaczynski and Ken, Chris, Brittany and Roberta Robitaille.
The whole Robitaille family — husband, wife, son and daughter — works at The Boss Grill full-time and they go out of their way to make sure staff and customers feel like part of the family. To the Robitailles, everyone who comes to the restaurant
is a welcomed friend. “We want to learn everybody’s name,” said Ken Robitaille. “We love people, we treat everyone like family and we make our food with love.” The Boss Grill is open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Saturday. The restaurant is open Sundays 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., after which time the dining room can be reserved for events. The restaurant nearly reached full capacity on opening day.

A photoshopped image of where the Gold Star Families Monument will stand at the Berlin Veterans Memorial Park.
Berlin will be home to state’s Gold Star Families Monument The Town of Berlin Veterans Commission is proud to announce that Berlin has been chosen to be the home of the Gold Star Families Monument in Connecticut. This monument is being built to: To honor, recognize, and serve Gold Star Families and the legacy of their Loved Ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The monument will be built in the Berlin Veterans Memorial Park on Veterans Way. We are hoping to have it built and dedicated on Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, which is the last Sunday in September. That would be Sept. 26, 2021.
The impact of the foundation’s work helps to raise public awareness about Gold Star families’ enduring sacrifice and the ultimate sacrifice made by their loved ones. The foundation wishes to educate the community about these sacrifices, reminding us all that freedom has not been and is not free. The foundation developed the mission and goals for honoring Gold Star families based on five philosophical pillars representing Homeland, Family, Patriot, Sacrifice and Legacy. These were important to the fallen loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice, the families who
continue to endure their sacrifice and the legacy they have left behind. These pillars are so profound that they inspired the creation and model of the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument as it is today.
A Classified ad is an easy way to sell your merchandise, and it’s easy on your wallet, too.
The Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is two sided. The front specifically honors Gold Star families with the statement, “A Tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives Who Sacrificed a Loved One for Our Freedom.” The reverse of the monument shows the pillars and representative images for each. And, within the monument there is an open silhouette that represents the missing family member surrounded by the pillars and the legacy they left behind.
Leaves will be picked up on or near your trash day during the weeks of Nov. 1620 and Nov. 30 - Dec. 4. Residents must put leaves in biodegradable brown paper bags and leave them at the curb on their regular trash day. Keep leaf bags well away from your automated trash container. Grass clippings and twigs cannot be mixed with leaves. Those who wish to dispose of leaves on their own may bring them to the drop-off area at 19 Town Farm Lane (off Massirio drive), Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Extended hours (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.) will be held Saturdays, Nov. 21 and 28.
Garden closing New Britain’s Walnut Hill Park Rose Garden will close for the year Saturday, Nov. 21. Volunteers are needed that day from 9 a.m. to noon to help with the closing process. Bring gloves, rakes and other tools that may help. Refreshments will be served. See Briefs, A14

Big Brothers Big Sisters to mount virtual gala Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters announced that, for the first time in its 54-year history, it will host its annual gala virtually on Thursday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. Called the 2020 Challenge, the night will feature appearances by “The Voice” winner Javier Colon, Fox 61 anchor Tim Lammers and Gov. Ned Lamont.
A native of Stratford and the winner of the first season of NBC’s “The Voice,” Colon will entertain the virtual audience with his rendition of a song that has topped the charts in multiple decades. Ryan Matthews, Director of Programs at Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters, said,
“With a lineup like Javier Colon, Governor Lamont and Tim Lammers, our 2020 Challenge certainly has an abundance of star power. Yet, I like to think the real stars of the evening are the ‘Bigs’ (adult mentors) and ‘Littles’ (children being mentored), who event attendees will meet and get to know during the course of the evening.” For registration and sponsorship details, visit betterunite.com/nutmegbigbrothersbigsisters-2020challenge, or contact Mariah Nolan: mariahn@nbbbs.org, 781-844-6993.

time to solidify the winter plan. All systems appeared to be on course for a Dec. 5 launch.
in consultation with its individual sports commitees, the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Connecticut Sports Medicine Committee.
“It is a little bit more Draconian than I thought was coming,” said one area administrator. “I think we all anticipated that it would be a little earlier than that.”
That plan called for starting basketball, hockey and boys swimming practices on Dec. 5, games as early as Dec. 17 and delaying a decision on the other winters sports — wrestling, indoor track, gymnastics, competitive dance and cheer — until Jan. 4. One major requirement: Masks would be worn in basketball and hockey.
Said Maloney Athletic Director Bob McKee, “I was a little surprised, just because never, in any of the discussions when we were on a call to CIAC or in our league, never once was it mentioned about being pushed back until January.”
Tuesday’s postponement to mid-January, as understandable as it was in light of the resurgence in COVID-19, did come as something of a surprise. While the CIAC had already delayed the start of the winter season, initially set for Nov. 21, it was to buy
McKee added, “I under-
stand. Every school, every community is going through COVID differently. It’s a challenge for schools and for everyone.” The Board of Control met Tuesday against the backdrop of rising COVID-19 cases in Connecticut (93,284), nationwide (11.3 million) and globally (55.3 million). The state’s daily case rates have climbed from an average of less than 100 back in August to over 1,000 starting this month, including a peak of 1,606 on Nov. 9. The CIAC, in its winter plan, noted that if enough school districts rose into the “red”
zone to the point where maintaining game schedules wasn’t possible, the season would be shut down and sports activity limited to conditioning and low risk non-contact skill work. Short of that, the CIAC was advising individual “red” schools to postpone events, but didn’t ban them outright. “Red” schools could still to compete, but had to notify the school district of the opposing team. Administrators from of both schools would then have to agree on whether to go forward with the event. Contests against out-of-state

or non-CIAC schools had already been prohibited for the winter. So were multiteam events among CIAC schools. The CIAC was hoping to stage a state postseason for basketball, hockey and swimming in mid-to-late February. The status of that is now uncertain. The CIAC has also set up an “alternative” season for March and the first half of April to accommodate football, which was cancelled in the fall. That alternative season now looms as something of an option for a delayed winter season.
