MERRY CHRISTMAS!
How well do you know the holiday? By Joy VanderLek Special to The Citizen
If you find yourself with a few minutes to spare after presents have been unwrapped and dinner dishes have been put away, here is some fun Christmas trivia to share with your family: What is the original name for Santa Claus?

A tradition in England, crackers are cardboard tubes stuffed with sweets and small toys. The crackers have ties at each end. Two people pull at the ties, the cracker makes a loud bang as it breaks open, spilling the treats inside. A paper hat and a poem are often found inside as well. See Christmas, A13

Thanks, Titan ”It is with very heavy hearts that we sadly announce the passing of retired police K9 Titan. Titan proudly served the Berlin Police Department and the citizens of Berlin from 2008-2017. He was loving and dedicated to his handler, Officer Aimee Krzykowski, and loved to spend time with all his family at the Berlin Police Department. Aimee and Titan were former winners of the CT Police K9 Olympics. Despite his intimidating professional demeanor, he was more frequently seen with kids at many community events. Responding to the rise in auto crime As if the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting economic downturn aren’t enough to make 2020 a year to look back on with dread, area police departments have also been reporting a big increase in auto burglaries and auto theft. On one recent night, Newington police reported more than 100 vehicle burglaries in large parking lots at businesses and condomini-
um complexes. As of Oct. 30, Berlin police had recorded 196 auto break-ins, many of them from residential driveways; the total for the same period last year was 39. Southington police announced a more than 200 percent increase in car burglaries in town compared to last year. Meriden and Wallingford police have also responded to a disturbing number of

smash-and-grabs from hotels and auto dealerships, including 40 in one night. In other cases, especially along Route 5, cars were jacked up and wheels and other parts removed. “It is a lot of young kids stealing cars … to make money,” said one auto dealer. “They sell the wheels on the street and make an easy profit off of it. We have never experienced this much theft in the 14 years we have been here.” What can be done? The police are aware of the problem, but they can’t be everywhere. And although stealing wheels and other parts from cars requires heavy tools and a great deal of nerve, police report that in many of the car burglary cases the cars were unlocked, and owners had even left the keys in some of them.
Although the exact reason for increased auto crime is hard to pin down, the coronavirus outbreak and high unemployment have certainly contributed to the problem. Berlin Deputy Police Chief Christopher Ciuci also suggested that some criminals are aware of the statewide policy on police pursuit, which says officers can only chase a vehicle if a crime of violence is involved. Be that as it may, what residents can do, at a bare minimum, is keep their cars locked and free of tempting valuables. Some may want to install security cameras as well. Since the police have a huge amount of territory to cover, an ounce of prevention may be the best prescription now. Previously published in the Record-Journal.
State lost 16K jobs last month By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff
The state lost 1,600 payroll jobs in November, the first monthly job loss since April’s drop due to the COVID-19 lockdown, according to the state Department of Labor. The job losses reflect the effect of the second wave of the pandemic on the state’s economy. Several sectors, including hospitality and leisure, were hard hit, analysts said. “Federal government employment fell by See Jobs, A8

COVID vaccine complicates religious exemption debate By Jenna Carlesso © The Connecticut Mirror
Last February, in the early weeks of Connecticut’s legislative session, lawmakers intent on erasing the state’s religious exemption from mandatory vaccinations quickly rolled out a draft of their proposal, called a public hearing and voted the bill out of committee with a goal of making it one of the first to arrive on the House floor. The session was suspended a short time later as coronavirus saturated the state. But proponents of the measure say it will again be a priority as they prepare for the legislature to reconvene on Jan. 6.
wouldn’t. They perceive this to be the greatest public health threat of our time.” Depending on how quickly a coronavirus vaccine is authorized for children, Festa said, some people are concerned that lawmakers will amend the bill late in the session to mandate a COVID-19 shot.
“Would they try to make an amendment on the floor? Obviously they reserve the right,” he said. “Our members are very concerned.” Rep. Jonathan Steinberg, a Democrat from Westport who is co-chair of the legislature’s Public Health Committee, said he expects fears around the coronavirus vac-
cine to complicate efforts to roll back the religious exemption. He and some of his colleagues are planning to launch an information campaign to make clear that a COVID-19 shot will not be part of the proposal. See Vaccine, A6

But critics worry that federal and state governments will someday make the shot mandatory for school-aged children, heightening fears around removal of the religious exemption.

This time, however, the effort could be complicated by skepticism surrounding the newly developed COVID-19 vaccine. The coronavirus shot is not on the state’s list of vaccines that children must receive before attending school. In fact, drug
makers have not yet approved a COVID-19 immunization for children. Moderna, whose vaccine could be distributed as early as this month, said it would soon begin testing the shot in children, with a clinical trial of 3,000 people aged 12 to 17 planned for this winter. Pfizer started testing its COVID-19 immunization in children as young as 12 in October.

A Quinnipiac University poll found that 33% of Americans would be unwilling to get the vaccine. Looney said, however, that a coronavirus shot won’t immediately be mandatory. “Only those who are opponents of the bill we had last year and are looking to undermine it may raise COVID-related fears,” he said. “But that’s not a relevant concern.” Steinberg said lawmakers will revisit some portions of last year’s bill when drafting a new one. For example, the provision allowing children who already are enrolled in school to continue claiming the exemption could be up for debate. Steinberg pointed to the rise in digital education as a reason it might be easier for some families opposed to vaccines to homeschool their kids.

Offsetting these declines, transportation and warehousing, which includes delivery services, grew in November and now employs more people than one year ago.” The government sector shed 900 jobs in November to a level of 220,200 and is now lower by 16,7000 jobs over last year. “One could argue not only are people more aware of the value of vaccines, but we also, by dint of necessity, have more experience with homeschooling and online learning,” he added. “We all recognize it’s not the same thing as in-person learning. But maybe we have a little bit less concern about obliging people to go down that path.” House Minority Leader Vincent Candelora, R-North Branford, questioned the urgency of the proposal, given that many families have opted for remote learning. “The landscape certainly has changed in terms of what our priorities are this session, and with so many

schools shuttered and [children] doing distance learning, I’m not so sure that that should be a priority,” he said. “We have issues with substance abuse, with drug abuse, with domestic violence, and I think those are the areas that the Public Health Committee should be looking at.” But Democrats appear poised to move forward. House Speaker Matthew Ritter, D-Hartford, said “the majority of lawmakers” do not support the religious exemption for vaccines currently on the state’s list of mandatory immunizations. “My suspicion is that when you talk about the measles [vaccine] – I think this has the votes to pass the House,” he said.

Naturopathic doctors: We’re here to help
SO LONG, 2020
Dr. Ann Aresco
Jay Ritter included this festive photo with his Letter to the Editor.
Letters to the Editor Let’s turn the page Editor : Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May 2021 be a vast improvement over 2020! Jay Ritter
The perfect gift Editor : Are you searching for the perfect gift for Christmas? We all want to give the perfect gift, so we put lots of thought into it. We shop and spend hours online search-
ing for it. When we finally decide, and make the purchase, we are content believing the receiver will be happy with it. Gifts can and do make us happy for a time, but it doesn't last forever. Even children tire of their gifts after having them for a while and eventually they are asking for a new one. It is just human nature. Yet the perfect gift is not to be found in a pretty package with a glittery bow. The perfect gift is the gift that God gave us when he sent us His
son, Jesus Christ, born in a manger in Bethlehem to be our redeemer. The perfect gift is open to everyone, not just a select few. Won't you accept the perfect gift of Jesus Christ this Christmas? You will be giving Him the perfect gift in return. Be sure to tell someone else about the perfect gift of Jesus Christ too. It is the greatest gift you will ever receive and give. It is the gift that lasts forever! Simone Fazzio

Lifestyle No surprise here, your lifestyle plays a key role in helping your immune system protect you. Comorbidities are a risk with any virus. If you are aware that you have comorbidity you should do your best to correct it. That is, if it is something you can fix. So many conditions are. Are you taking a pharmaceutical for a comorbid condition? If you are thinking that you are stuck with a condition you should look deeper into the treatments for it. Diabetes Type II is a condition that you can eliminate with diet and exercise. Autoimmune, thyroid conditions, gastrointestinal issues, etc. are all better with a lifestyle change. Prevention of all disease starts with a healthy lifestyle that you are in charge of.

Monday, Gov. Ned Lamont said the state is expecting 63,300 doses of the Moderna vaccine this week. This is in addition to 31,200 doses of the Pfizer vaccine received last week and another 24,375 anticipated this week.

cently approved the emergency use of the new PfizerBioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, and just a week later the Moderna vaccine. Distribution is now underway. So far, Pfizer’s vaccine has been delivered to multiple acute care facilities across the state, where it will be stored at ultracold temperatures. Moderna’s vaccine has not yet arrived. Unlike Pfizer’s, it also must be kept cold, but at temperatures that most standard medical freezers can accommodate.
Now you are on three drugs and doing nothing with your lifestyle to correct the cholesterol, blood pressure and sugar. Then along comes the flu and other viruses that will be very risky given your symptoms. If you reverse the conditions that caused you to go on the drugs you will no longer need the drugs and no longer have the comorbidity.
According to the state website, the vaccine will be offered in two phases, based on risk factors. In Phase 1A, the vaccine will be limited to front-line medical providers and nursing home residents. In Phase 1B, the vaccine will be available to other critical care workers and first re-

not enough time to fit everything in,” said Tony Cortright, gymnastics director and head coach. Temperature checks are administered and sanitization occurs constantly. CATS Gymnastics, Cheshire CATS Gymnastics in Cheshire was closed for three months at the beginning of the pandemic. When it reopened, the competitive program was the first group to come back into the gym. “Because we thought that they would be the easiest group where we could see what changes and adaptations we would have to make because they are a little bit older, they are a little bit self-reliant to socially distance themselves rather than us with the younger kids constantly having to be on them and reminding them to social distance,” said Wes Norris, owner and coach. All staff and students wear masks. Sanitization occurs in between classes and practices.

Because of the pandemic, the staff decided not to enter students in any competitions this year. “It just makes things a little bit easier rather than having to train like we are getting ready to compete and then they’re going to cancel the meet,” Norris said. “... Our parents were thrilled that we are going to cancel the season just because the bottom line is this is a sport that is supposed to be fun and we’ve got to take the kids' health as our number one consideration.”

Notice of Application
REMINDER: Real Estate tax bills over $100 are split into two installments due July 1, and January 1.
Interest is normally charged at the rate of 1.5% per month, 18% per year from the due date of the tax. This program allows for a lower rate of interest: 0.25% per month, or 3% per year, from the due date of the tax, for a period of three months only. This plan covers installments that come due up through and including January 1, 2021. For the January 1, 2021 installment, the last day to pay is still February 1, 2021 but if the taxpayer pays on February 2nd or later, they will not be paying 1.5% per month interest, but rather only 0.25% per month interest. On February 2, 2021 the interest charged would not be 3%, but rather 0.25 x 2 months or 0.5%. This plan will remain in force only for three months from the due date of January 1,2021, it would end on March 31, 2021.
