The Booking Around Berlin Community Scavenger Hunt will run until Jan. 31. Twenty local businesses, plus the library, will hang posters of popular children’s book titles in their windows. Players will have to find each poster and write down the title of the book on their map, which they can get from a participating business, the Berlin library, or the library website.

The Sage Park football field – Scalise Field – is also used by several other BHS sports teams, as well as for adult and youth sports.

The library will give all participants a goodie bag. Those who find at least 15 book covers and return the map to the library, or send

Berlin’s Jacob Lindsay holds the winner’s trophy after capturing the Cape Cod Junior Classic at Willowbend Country Club in Mashpee, Mass. in October. Lindsay was recently named a Scholastic Junior All-American by the American Junior Golf Association. Photo courtesy of Niti Lindsay

On the course, a Scholastic All-American needs to finish in the top 15 at an AJGA event. Lindsay was 12th at the Junior Golf Hub Championship in Chicopee Country Club in Massachusetts in July.

The latter victory makes Lindsay the New England representative in the Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship, which plays at the Biltmore Course in Coral Gables Jan. 2-6.

Lindsay later won the junior championship at Shuttle Meadow Country Club in August and the Cape Cod Junior Classic at Willowbend Country Club in Mashpee, Mass. in October.

At Berlin High School, Lindsay has been the Redcoats’ No. 1 golfer since his freshman year. He was All-State and All-New England that season as well as in 2019 as a sophomore.

Lindsay aims to study Chemical Engineering in college. He’d like to play golf, too, but his major is the primary focus.

Tax deferral details will depend on towns HARTFORD (AP) — Connecticut residents, businesses and landlords are getting a three-month grace period on taxes due to the COVID19 pandemic — but exactly how much they’ll end up paying will depend on where they live.

In some towns, the tax deferment will be interest free, while in others it will come with a lowered interest rate. Whether taxpayers need to apply for the deferment also varies from town to town, the Hartford Courant reported. The tax deferments ap-

Trevor Chapman, a full-time instructor at Lock N’ Load, said he likes the variety of firearm types. Asked what he likes most about teaching classes, Chapman said “teaching my hobby to other people.” He added the environment

X-mas tree disposal options Berlin residents are reminded of the options available to dispose of fresh cut Christmas trees. Trees will be collected curbside (on, or near, your collection day) the week of Jan. 11, and must be at least six feet away from your automated collection cart so as not to interfere with the disposal of your household refuse. Please remove all wrappings (plastic bags) from the trees prior to disposal. Trees will also be accepted for recycling at the Town Recycling Center on Massirio Drive during normal business hours, Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 9 and 23, 8 a.m. to noon. For further information on tree collection, call the Public Works office at 860-8287022. The website pickyourownchristmastree.org says if some tree needles scatter inside, it is better to sweep them up; as needles can clog vacuum cleaners. Also, the online Christmas tree resource warns against burning your Christmas tree in a fireplace or wood stove. Pines, firs and other evergreens have a high content of flammable turpentine oils, and burning the tree may contribute to creosote buildup and risk a chimney fire.

Lions come through for local veterans On Tuesday night, Dec. 15, the Berlin Lions Club made a gift card presentation to the Berlin Veterans Commission. Ken Scheer, Dan Daigle, Gary Schmidt, Greg Dehm, Ron Bosco, Gary Bienkowski, Paul Kristopik, Irene Hillstrand and Howie Larson, representing the Berlin Lions, presented the commission with a donation of $3,300 in $100 gift cards. The gift cards given by the Lions stay in town. Recipients are chosen by the veterans commission, which learn about veterans in need, often from others, because the person in trouble is too proud to ask for help.

It is an unbelievable experience to be able to present these cards to our veterans and to let them know that their service to our country, along with their sacrifices, will never be forgotten. Also, in November, the Berlin Lions Club honored our veterans with a new annual fundraiser, “Berlin Luminaries for Veterans.” The Lions Club sold luminaries which were displayed at Veterans Memorial Park. — Press Release

are to be cleared and/or sanded within 24 hours of the completion of street plowing operations. It is the responsibility of the property owner fronting that sidewalk to make it safe for public travel. Failure to do so can result in a fine. Parking bans become effective automatically (or at the discretion of the Director of Public Works) when there is an accumulation of four inches or more of snow and ice on any town streets. Parking bans will terminate no sooner than eight hours after any snowstorm (or as directed by the Director of Public Works). Any vehicle left parked on the street after such parking ban has taken effect, will be towed and subject to a fine and all related charges.

Biden: Cardona right pick to lead education through pandemic WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — President-elect Joe Biden introduced Miguel Cardona as his pick for education secretary on Wednesday, Dec. 23 saying Connecticut’s education chief and life-long champion of public schools is the right pick to lead the department as the nation struggles to educate students safely during the pandemic. The selection delivers on Biden’s promise to nominate someone with experience working in public education and would fulfill his goal of installing an education chief who stands in sharp contrast to President Donald Trump’s Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. Unlike DeVos, a school choice advocate whom Biden says is an opponent of public schools, Cardona is a product of them, starting when he entered kindergarten unable to speak English.

During remarks in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden called Cardona a “brilliant” educator who would help further his administration’s commitment to re-opening schools safely. Early next year, Biden said he’d send to Congress a plan on next steps for the education system, including funding to keep educators employed and safely reopen schools. In introducing Cardona, Biden noted his focus to broaden remote learning across communities in need and ensure schools in his state had appropriate safety gear. “That’s the vision, resolve and initiative that are all going to help us contain this pandemic and reopen our schools safely,” Biden said. “It’s a standard of care that comes from having taught in a classroom. ... He is a secretary of education for this moment.”

Hunt

From A1

Another Berlin golfer grabbing headlines is Jackson Roman.

While the scavenger hunt was initiated by the library, the Berlin Economic Development Department helped sponsor it. Economic Development Director Chris Edge believes the event will help ignite children’s passion for reading and expose them to local businesses.

While the 2020 prep season was lost to the pandemic, Roman did enjoy a remarkable summer. At one point, he won three straight events: the Connecticut State Golf Association’s Borck Junior Golf Tournament at the Country Club of New Canaan, the AJGA Junior Golf Hub Championship in Chicopee, Mass., and the U.S. Challenge Cup Boys and Girls Championship in Rumford, R.I. Roman also has the distinction of being the youngest player to ever win the men’s club champion at his home course, Shuttle Meadow Country Club. Roman broke the tournament record in winning the 2019 crown. This coming spring, Roman will be captain of the Hamden Hall squad. It looms as a promising spring. Hamden Hall junior, Ben James of Milford, has already commited to the University of Virginia. — Record Journal report

“I am a little bit old school, so I like to be able to hold a book, I like to get to the end of it. It would be wonderful to have kids experience that same excitement for reading and discovering new books,” said Edge.

“Jackson is a tremendous student-athlete and I couldn’t be prouder of him for earning the opportunity to play at the next level,” said Hamden Hall golf coach Keith Kaliszewski. “He has worked really hard in school and on his golf game, led by example, and been a great teammate to his peers during his four years at Hamden Hall.”

All book titles featured in the hunt will be available in the library and Edge hopes kids will check out the ones that catch their attention.
