All about the look for Perno’s growing business
By Robert Mayer Special to The Citizen
Growing up in the small town of Berlin, Michael Perno understood the concept of community and supporting family owned businesses.
His parents were well-respected entrepreneurs and had a work ethic he hoped to inherit. His father, Roger, owned Roger’s Marketplace for over 20 years and his mother, Fran, has owned Fran’s Hair on the Ave for as many years as he can remember.
The Berlin Fair: History in the making
By Mike DeRienzo Special to The Citizen
For many, this time of year is a reminder that all things change.
Days become shorter, the weather becomes a bit cooler, and the once green,
luscious trees have, almost overnight, transformed into a beautiful tapestry of orange, yellow, and red colors. The fall is the time when kids return to school, parents get a much needed break, and new television shows begin to air (when
there is not a strike).
Some changes can be scary, like those nerves before the first day at a new school, or exciting, like finally getting your driver’s license, but in the end, the
Perno’s vision to own his own business transpired from his parent’s success. That’s when Giovanni Louise was born.
“I figured I would take over my dad’s supermarket and worked there as the General Manager for two years before it closed so it was at that point, I had to figure out what was next,” said Perno, who graduated from Berlin High School in 2011 and played on the only BHS state

Education is incredibly important for family
By Jessica Patraw
In 2011; after renting for about 4 years, my husband and I decided to buy our first home in town. The residents of Berlin helped shape our decision to stay in town and raise our family. We talked to so many people that spoke highly about the education system. For my husband and I our childrens’ education was incredibly important to us. Everyone we had spoken to made it clear how amazing the school system is. In our discussions a few important things were touched upon including an amazing special education program, small class sizes, and the upto-date technology.
We currently have 3 daughters, 2 currently attending the Berlin public school system, and we just welcomed our son to our family in February.
My involvement with the schools took off in 2019 when my daughter entered kindergarten. I was very fortunate to have a flexible job which allowed me to come into my daughter’s classroom frequently. In the classroom I participated in games, mystery reader, and many lunch dates. Lunch time was our favorite! I was

able to see my daughter and her classmates in their element being so silly and having so much fun while they decompressed and enjoyed lunch. Unfortunately, that same year new restrictions were put in place due to Covid and I was no longer allowed in the school. We did online school and lots of other fun things like science experiments and readings. During my daughter’s first grade experience nobody was allowed in the school still. I was as involved as possible from home whether assisting the teacher with supplies, sending in fun crafts, and kept a great open communication with her teacher. During second grade the entire second grade team decided that still, no volunteers would be able to come into the class. This was a hard transition for me because I enjoyed the relationship I built in the classroom with my daughter’s teacher and classmates. I really enjoyed watching her and her peers in their element as well as getting to know all the children in the class.
In 2021 when my middle daughter was in kindergarten, I was chosen to be a room parent. This was such a wonderful experience. Again, having the opportuni-
ty to get to know each of the children and watch my daughter flourish in her environment was truly special. I was in the classroom as often as I could be, assisted at the book fair and the holiday shop. These opportunities were great at allowing me to interact with teachers, staff, and a lot of students from all grade levels.
Last year when my oldest daughter was in 3rd grade, I was selected to be room parent. It felt so good to be able to be back in the classroom with all of the kids doing so many fun things. I also came in and read to the class a few times as well as assisting with the bookfair.
I continue to find ways to help support the schools and community. I look forward to helping create amazing memories with all of the families in our school community and being of assistance any way that I can. Please support me in helping our schools by voting Patraw for Berlin Board of Education.

Expectations high as BHS football kicks off new season
By Robert Mayer Special to The Citizen
They say the biggest improvement in a football team is between week one and week two.
Berlin football does not have the luxury to open with a weak opponent and get better for week two, as state finalist Wilton visits Scalise Field Friday night at 6:30 p.m. for the opening game of the season in a Connecticut High School Alliance Game. The schedule will test Berlin week after week as after Wilton games against Simsbury, Bunnell and Wethersfield will give the Redcoats
little time to regroup from week to week.
“We are one of the smaller schools in this tier and a couple of years ago when we bumped up to play the bigger schools we were winning a lot of those games at halftime but we ended up losing because we didn’t have the numbers or the size the larger schools do,” Berlin coach Joe Aresimowicz said. “The crossovers like Wilton are helpful and gives us a big challenge. We learned from those experiences two years ago that we needed to add depth, size, speed, and that’s

MEET THE CANDIDATES
Offering experience, dedication, cooperation
By Jen Jurgen
Hello Berlin, Kensington, and East Berlin!
I’m Jen Jurgen and I hope to be elected to our Board of Education on Nov. 7.
I have lived in Kensington for 25 years with my husband and we have a daughter who is currently attending Berlin High School.
I am a product of public ed-
ucation and have more than 30 years of experience working in higher education. Additionally, I have spent nearly a decade as a volunteer and advocate for Berlin schools and understand the importance of a strong educational system for our kids.
We are fortunate in Berlin
that our Board of Education is non-partisan. I am a strong supporter of working together and keeping politics out of education.
My goals
Ensuring our schools are fiscally responsible yet properly funded. This will allow us to continue to provide equal access to resources and opportunities for all students, retain top educators and administrators, and maintain the high-quality
education that prepares students for ongoing success.
Encouraging broader communication and collaboration with parents, teachers, students and the greater Berlin community. All should have the opportunity to have a deeper understanding of what is happening in our schools and how our tax dollars are used for education.
Maintaining a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students, protecting the academic tools and support they need to pursue future success after

high school whether in college, trade school or employment.
Mark your calendar to support my candidacy by voting for me in our Nov. 7 election. I look forward to serving our community.
I also invite you to join me and the other BOE candidates for an informal Meet & Greet on Friday, Sept. 22 and Friday, Oct. 6 from 4-5 p.m. at Provisions State Coffee located at 848 Farmington Ave., Unit 1, Berlin. Be sure to follow me on Facebook at JurgenforBOE.
In Brief
In December of 2021, the Town of Berlin passed a new leash ordinance that requires dogs to be always on
leashes on public property. This includes all town parks and public sidewalks.
Beginning May 1, Animal Control Officers were set to begin issuing Written Infractions. The fine for violation of this ordinance is $100. For more information regarding the leash ordinance, refer to the municipal website.

started to pay attention to my appearance. Instead of showing up in khakis and a polo shirt I would wear a nice outfit, a custom suit with polished shoes, and it started making a difference,” he continued. “I was getting more meetings and more sales and closing more deals. The clothes really did make the man in this case, and I started thinking about what was possible.”
So as Perno worked his sales and consulting jobs, he was making good money and doing well for himself, but something was missing from his life. In the back of his mind, he was always coming up with ideas to own his own business like his parents did. It wasn’t as if he needed to do something urgently, but he just felt a void. When he was planning his wedding with his to-be wife, Kayla, also from Berlin, he came up with the idea to make custom suits for the wedding party. “I am not the kind of guy who can go in and buy off the rack and have things fit perfectly because I’m kind of short and stocky,” Perno said.
“You know, when the woman goes and picks out her wedding dress it’s a whole big day, they go out and then go to lunch and dinner and it’s awesome. The guys?” he commented. “They just go to the rental place usually and pick out something that is close to a match and go home. So, I thought what if we can make this as special for a guy as they do for a woman. Then what about men who are in big-time jobs and wear suits every day like lawyers and financial advisors. I thought there would be a market for it.”
Being new to the industry, Perno needed to learn the ins and outs of being a custom clothier.
“It started out as a hobby, and I had to learn about the fabrics and the tailor teams. It was new to me. Then I had to learn about tailoring suits and what we would be able to offer,” Perno explained. “We were mobile at first. People heard of us by word of mouth, and we would go to them and take all the measurements and bring fabrics and colors to them and then they would be delivered.”
From that idea Giovanni Louise Custom Clothier

came to life in February of 2022. And how are things going? So well that Perno had to buy a brick-and-mortar store, which he opened at 116A Mill Street in Berlin, conveniently and not by accident, right next to Bridal Bells Boutique.
“Thank God for my wife because she was my number one fan. It just took off,” Perno said. “I would go to a meeting with a new client, and she would meet me at the door so excited to see how it went. Or we would see clients post photos on social media at a wedding with our suits on and she would be so happy and proud. She knew all along that there was something missing in my life, and we talked about it, and she was 100 percent supportive. Having her in my corner made the decision to go full time so much easier.”
“The biggest question is always why should I pay more
for a custom suit and it’sa fair question,” Perno admitted. “My simple response is this: It’s important to invest in yourself. Whether you have a special event, business meeting, or looking to elevate your wardrobe, when you look good you feel good. Why spend upwards of $500 for an off the rack suit and hundreds more on tailoring fees? With us, you gain access to expert style advice while we design and create the garment specifically with you in mind. With our detailed measurement and fitting process, we guarantee the perfect fit every time.”
Considering the cost, why didn’t Perno put his shop in West Hartford or Glastonbury or Fairfield County?
“All my friends asked me the same question,” he said. “I knew I wanted to have my business here in Berlin because I grew up here, I live here, and I love this town. Our clients range from the working-class, blue-collar individual to celebrities, athletes, and well-established lawyers and real estate
agents. Being in the center of the state, our clients find our location convenient.”
“Business has more than doubled in one year and we expect that to continue going forward,” Perno contin-
ued. “That’s all by word of mouth. Imagine if we start to advertise.”
Perno said more exciting news is coming with him stocking custom casuals and a subscription service in the
works.

Everyone stepped up to fix PD retirement benefits
Editor:
Two years ago I wrote in this same space about the mess that the retirement benefits were in for our police officers. Bad planning and a series of short sighted decisions many years ago left our officers as participants in one of three widely disparate retirement plans. Police officers working alongside their peers had tremendously different benefits, based merely on their date of hire. It was terrible for morale and a real challenge for recruiting and retention.
Letter to the Editor
As of this month, our entire union membership has been assimilated into one common pension plan.
It’s well structured and well funded. It is intelligently designed and will serve our outstanding public servants and our taxpayers well into the future. Our police officers will have, for the first time in years, a reliable, fair and financially sound retirement plan.
It took a lot of people to get this done, and I want to thank them here. The entire town council led by Mayor Mark Kaczynski and the entire board of finance, led by Sal Bordonaro, were critical in making this happen.
Chief Matt McNally, Lieutenants Solek and Martin,
Sgt. Flynn and my fellow police commissioners were instrumental in accomplishing this goal. Thank you to all of you.
And if you have read this far, thank you, and remember school is back in session. That means lots of busses, and changes in your morning traffic patterns and kids everywhere. Please be patient, attentive and cautious driving in our beautiful town.
One last reminder: Red lights mean STOP, not speed up! Stop at red lights, all of them. Help keep Berlin safe.

only consistency in life often comes down to change itself.
But every so often, a group of people discover the secret to slowing down time.
The Berlin Lions Club is one of those groups, and their secret? A good time, courtesy of the Berlin Fair, the roots of which go all the way back to the founding of the town.
In 1659, Sergeant Richard Beckley purchased 300 acres of land in the center of what is now Connecticut from Chief Tarramuggus and built a home for him and his family. Soon, other settlers from nearby Farmington began to come to the area and, by 1705, an ecclesiastical society was created, recognised, and officially renamed the Great Swamp Society.
The area blossomed with farms, mills, ironworkers, blacksmiths, and other businesses who migrated the areas and set up shop. One such business belonged to Edward and William Pattison, and their families Irish immigrants who set up the first tinware business in the colonies. They first began selling their product house to house, but soon traveled all over the country and Canada by mule and wagon, thus earning them, and Berlin, the nickname, “The Yankee Peddler.”
Other local businesses played an important role in the Revolutionary War. Ammunition and tin was manufactured and produced in Berlin, as was cotton and woolen yarn used for clothes and blankets.
By the 1800’s, business was booming and professional tradesmen began settling in Berlin. As Berlin was located on the direct route between larger cities New Haven and Hartford, hospitality and other businesses also began to thrive.
Unfortunately, the Industrial Revolution hit Berlin hard, and mass produced products began to dominate the area, thus forcing many of the so-called Yankee Peddler’s out of business.
Possibly in response to the economic crisis, the State Legislature granted a charter for the creation of the Harvest Festival, with its first year in 1882. By the early 1890’s, the festival was renamed the State Agricultural Fair and was a successful annual event until 1919.
In 1948, following World War II, the Berlin Lions Club decided to bring the Fair back to life, and it has been an annual event ever since. With local homemade crafts, games, rides, contests, music and more, with funds raised for local charities, there is something for everyone.
Now that you know the history, it’s time to learn about the event itself. Next week, we’ll talk to this year’s organizers and give readers an inside peek into this year’s event!

From A1 History
The 73rd Berlin Fair returned for a bigger and better time on the Berlin Fair Grounds on September 15-18 in 2022. The fair included more local food choices, live entertainment, and even helicopter rides.Therewerelotsofcattle,sheep,andswineondisplay.

Demolition Derby
Demolition Derby action returns to the 2023 Berlin Fair on Sept 14 as the road warriors take to the ring to see who will be king of the ring. The action starts at 7 p.m. so you will want to get there early for a good seat to watch the metal mayhem. This event is open to any unibody car up to 111 inch wheelbase. No SUV's. Registration applications are online along with the rules for preparation of car at skyfireproductions.us. Applications are also available at Kensington Auto Service and will be available the day of event. Pit passes will be available to those 12 years of age and older.
Berlin’s Got Talent
Those qualifying will advance to the Berlin Fair on Friday, September 15th to perform live in the Semi Finals. Finalists making it through the Semi Final Round will perform in the Finals on Saturday, September 16th, and walking away with the prize money totaling $2,000.
Rides and Games
For young and old, nothing brings a smile like classic midway rides and games, and there’s something for everyone in these great attractions from Dreamland Amusements.
Take a step back in time with the carousel, and gaze as far as the eye can see from atop the Ferris Wheel. For the more adventurous, the exhilarating zipper, Himalaya, Spaceship 2000, and Tornado are sure to get the heart racing.
And it just wouldn’t be the midway without the many opportunities to win prizes by stepping up to the game
booth. Traditional games like basketball free-throw, milk-can toss, and dart toss challenge you to test your skills – and maybe walk away with the big one New for 2023 in the Kiddie Land – Monster Trucks. Youngsters get double the ride pleasure with the Monster Truck. As the center rotates, turning the six monster 4X4 trucks wheelies and car crushing excitement waits for every kid. The kids love the feel of driving their very own monster truck just like the big boys.
Pulls and Draws
It all comes down to bragging rights: Whose truck, tractor, or livestock can haul the most tonnage. Five separate competitions will take place to determine the winners.
And while the categories are very different, each contest traces its roots to the 1860s when farming machines were pulled by horse, and farmers would boast about the strength of their horses.
The farmers would make lofty claims, then challenge one another to contests to see who had the strongest horse. The tradition is alive and well at the Berlin Fair. For more, visit www.ctberlinfair.com/p/entertainment/pulls-and-draws

what we have concentrated on. We have had to maximize our roster.”
Aresimowicz is in his seventh season as the head coach at Berlin and owns a 52-18 and several trips to the state playoffs including a loss in the state championship game last year to Notre Dame-West Haven, The team has eight starters returning on both sides of
the ball, but the losses are big ones. Will Gomes is playing at Franklin Pierce and do-it-all Josh Grimm and quarterback Lorenzo Miele have graduated. C.J. Riccitelli will take over from Miele as the starting quarterback. Ryan Lavender will back up and play linebacker as well. So, while Berlin has some holes, do not feel too bad for the Redcoats as most of the incredibly deep backfield returns and will pound defenses with whoever is the hot back in that game or even on that drive.
The top returnee is Kyle Melville, just a junior. He gained 1,282 all-purpose yards last year with 563 yards rushing and he is the team’s top returning scorer with eight touchdowns.
He is far from alone, however. Seniors Toby Lavender, Jonathan Morales, Elijah Santos, and Mason DiMauro shared carries last season and are well-seasoned to take on the rigors of the tougher schedule.
Mike Fitzsimmons should lead the receiving corps at 6foot-3 and 210 pounds while the backs out of the backfield will also be prime targets for whoever the quarterback is. Gabe Rio and Kayden Tirado will also see time at receiver. Up front, the top returnees are senior Dylan Hyburg, Junior Nicholas Ebrahimi, and junior Nicholas Rivera.
The Berlin tradition continues under Aresimowicz with a perfect 10-0 record last year and a trip to the state championship game. But two lopsided losses to catholic schools have left a
sour taste in the “If we’re able to make it to the playoffs our tough schedule will help us there is no doubt about it,” Aresimowicz said. “Last year coming down the stretch we finished the season with four or five games that we were just superior, and we didn’t get a lot from those games. If you look at our schedule, we won’t be able to lose more than three or so games and get it. To do that, we’re going to have to play really well and it’s going to be tough. We do not hope to get into the playoffs at Berlin, it’s our expectation to get into the playoffs. We want to make that happened again this year and we are going to do everything we can to make sure we do.”
Berlin’s success has bumped it up from CCC Tier III to Tier II this season, giving the Redcoats a tougher schedule. It includes dates vs. 2022 playoff teams like Wilton and Wethersfield, not to mention back-to-back matchups vs. Windsor and Middletown to close the
year. The competition might actually serve Berlin well should it make a return trip to the Class M playoffs.
Following is the BHS football schedule:
