Veteran police officers promoted By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Gratefulness for the support of the town was a common theme at a promotion ceremony for two local police officers in late August. “It’s just great to be a part of law enforcement in this community,” said Lieutenant Shawn Solek, who was elevated from the rank of sergeant to manage the department’s operations division, which encompasses 22 officers and six patrol supervisors. Sergeant Rob Martin said out of the four departments he has worked in, including 21 years in New Britain, he has never seen another with the degree of commitment his fellow officers show for their community. “I assure you, I will not let

this community down. I love this community,” said Martin. The promotions were met from applause from the crowded rotunda of the Town Hall, where the Monday, Aug. 26 ceremony was held with town officials, family and plenty of officers congratulating their brothers. Solek’s badge was pinned to his uniform by his father, John Solek, a retired Berlin Police sergeant, while Martin’s was pinned by his wife, Sherri Martin, who wore her own uniform –she’s an officer with the Enfield Police Department. Solek, who has been with the department for 12 years, is taking over after Lieutenant James Gosselin re-

Historical society, veterans bring WWII project to fair The Berlin Veterans Commission and the Berlin Historical Society are bringing a special project to the Berlin Fair this year. Organizers say they hope the public will come out and learn more about those who served as well as the country’s military history. The commission also is seeking to improve and add to its ongoing project at Walter V. Duplin’s letters home from World War II will be featured at the Berlin Fair this month. Ragged Mountain a testing ground for pioneer climbers By Terry Sutton Special to The Citizen

Then, it was time to go back to Connecticut. While our state doesn’t have two mile I recently took a vacation to high mountain ranges, Wyoming and spent time in glaciers, geysers and wildlife the Grand Teton National such as bison and Park and the world famous pronghorns, it has its own Yellowstone National Park. than one hundred feet in vertical length. According to the publication, Trap Rock Ridges of Connecticut: Natural History & Land Use, those cliffs were formed more than 200 million years ago when continental shifting caused parts of Connecticut’s ground to split open and result in volcanic flows. These flows would become Ragged and several other mountains in the central part of the state. In the 1930s, the cliffs of Ragged and nearby Sleeping Giant Park would be testing ground for some of the earliest technical rock climbers in the United States. Some of the country’s most difficult routes were set at Ragged at a time when most climbers used primitive safety equipment which included ropes made from plant/animal fibers and pitons hammered

into cliff walls to prevent ground falls. Mountaineering pioneer Fritz Wiessner, who did first ascents on famous mountains worldwide, was also the first to climb and name some of the routes on Ragged’s cliffs. As climbing equipment improved in safety and mobility, climbers would venture to bigger and more difficult climbing areas in the country and overseas. While most climbers book their climbing vacations at places such as Yosemite National Park in California or closer by at the White Mountain in New Hampshire and the Shawangunks in nearby New York, many advanced rock climbers will still make a trip to Ragged to scale popular routes such as Wiessner Crack, Wiessner Slab, Vector, Unconquerable Crack and Broadway.

beauty and challenge, is also one of danger. Over the years, both climbers and hikers have perished from falls off the cliffs. Kevin West is the owner of Stone Age Rock Gym in Manchester and a rock climbing guide who has given many lessons at Ragged Mountain, he encourages visitors to be aware of their surroundings.“Hikers and climbers should take note that every few years there are accidents on these cliffs,” West cautioned. “The sport of climbing bears inherent risk. Hikers that get off trail, or get caught out after dark have walked or stumbled off cliffs by accident. When you venture outside always bring the basics: food, water, clothing layers including a light weight jacket (or other covering), a light source, and

The main cliff of Ragged which has most of the challenging and famous climbs is owned by the Ragged Mountain Foundation which permits climbing and maintains the trails around it. Aside from watching climbers scale the various cliffs at Ragged there is various wildlife such as deer, hawks, turkeys, poisonous copperhead snakes and even bears. There are many great views from the various cliffs

Access to the trails includes a trailhead and parking area at the end of West Lane in Berlin. There’s also a trailhead off of Andrews Street in Southington but parking is forbidden on that street as well as Carey Street. Limited parking is allowed on the neighboring streets off of Andrews but visitors are encouraged to carpool with others and to not block driveways or mailboxes.

Ragged doesn’t have the height or elevation of the Tetons or the geo-thermal activity of Yellowstone but it is a local treasure. If you have the chance to hike it, go for it.

This warning comes from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, which tells us that some of the hummingbirds, bats, bees, beetles and butterflies that help pollinate over 75 percent of our flowering plants and food crops are endangered. Without them, we would miss many fruits, nuts and vegetables because they all depend on pollinators.

businesses to join them in creating pathways — yards and other areas free of pesticides that have plants for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. There’s a new pollinator garden in the works at the Novick property on Flanders Road — created this summer with a grant from the Greater New Britain Community Foundation — and residents are encouraged to take similar steps on their own land. There's also a pollinator garden near the YMCA, created by Kelley School students and teachers. In Middlefield there’s now a pollinator patch in the Giving Garden, which was built last year by Coginchaug Area Transition. The Quinnipiac River Watershed Association has a butterfly and bee garden on Oregon Road in

Meriden. And the North Haven Garden Club maintains two pollinator gardens, one at the Historical Society building and another at Todds Pond. But pollinators are still threatened by pesticides, which is why the FWS urges people to avoid or limit pesticide use: “Pesticides can kill more than the target pest. Some pesticide residues can kill pollinators for several days after the pesticide is applied.” Great examples of community service, these commendable local efforts to provide safe habitat for helpful creatures can mean fun and educational opportunities for both adults and children, and are helping keep crucial pollinators alive and thriving in our area.

EAST GRANBY (AP) — The nation’s oldest prison will be the backdrop for a day devoted to the importance of conserving bats in Connecticut.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. the public can catch a glimpse of endangered bats in the “bat cave.” Other family-friendly activities are planned as well.

The underground tunnels at the former prison, Old NewGate Prison and Copper Mine in East Granby, are the winter home of several stateendangered bat species.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Department of Economic and Community Development are planning “Bat Appreciation Day” to highlight the site’s importance to

conserving the bat population. Bats at the historic site are considered “cave bats,” in part because they hibernate underground in caves and mines. Connecticut purchased the copper mine in 1773 and operated it as a prison for more than 50 years.

not too big. “Everyone’s super friendly when you come into the store – and helpful,” Dunn said. Co-owner Trevor Furrer said offering the convenience of good food is exactly their goal.

Lamont insists on prioritizing spending for transportation infrastructure, which he believes will show positive returns, while many lawmakers continue to push for bring-home-the-bacon local priorities. But Lamont says other projects will have to wait until lawmakers settle on at least a short-term plan to upgrade the state’s aging infrastructure.

“Just as many Connecticut families do, the state must also live within its means,” Ryan Drajewicz, the governor ’s chief of staff, told The Connecticut Mirror recently. “The ‘Must-dos’ take precedence over the ‘Niceto-haves.’” And, for Lamont, the first ‘Must-do’ is modernizing and upgrading the state’s transportation system. Although Fasano, R-North Haven, has often been criti-

cal of Lamont, he says Senate Republicans would stand with the governor in upholding a veto of any bond package they deem wasteful or ill-focused. “Connecticut is one of the nation’s leaders in per-capita state debt, in part because the state puts too much on its credit card …,” Drajewicz said. Therefore, as part of his “debt diet,” Lamont wants to cut down on bonding other than for transportation, school construction, and lit-

tle else. Since highway tolling — which the administration says could raise about $800 million annually by 2024 or 2025 — failed to pass this year, and since the state is still not on an even keel financially, the governor’s “debt diet” is a sensible approach. And hard choices will have to be made between the ‘Must-dos’ and the ‘Niceto-haves.’”

Given recent history, the idea of Connecticut Democrats and Republicans working together for the common good may sound like a fantasy of how things could be in the sweet byand-by. “The items I have been asked to consent to represent significant actions which will have consequences and implications for the citizens of Connecticut,” House Minority Leader Themis Klarides, R-Derby, wrote to the Partnership for Connecticut’s interim board, informing them she would not be casting a vote. “It is my duty as a state representative and board member to do my due diligence before consenting to these items.” The Dalios’ foundation is

donating $100 million to the initiative, an amount being matched by the state and other private donors, to help improve Connecticut schools. The nonprofit Partnership for Connecticut has drawn some criticism because it was granted an exemption from public information laws. The state attorney general recently determined, however, that documents held by the member lawmakers are not exempt, putting the legislators in a complicated situation. Senate Republican Leader Len Fasano, of North Haven, voiced concern in his own letter to the interim board about voting on “significant operations, policies and budgets without any discussion or meetings.” He noted how the documents sent to the legislators and obtained by The Associated Press include creating an executive committee, appointing members and giving the group “significant powers” without discussion. A review of the documents indicates three of the four candidates for top officers on the board of directors, including the chair, are ap-

pointees made by Dalio Philanthropies. The candidate for board secretary is a board member appointment made by Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont. There are 13 board members in total. Fasano raised additional concerns about how members were being asked to approve an initial operating budget through December, including an assumed salary of $247,500 for a yet-to-behired president and CEO, without any discussion. “I am also concerned that money already appears to have been spent,” said Fasano, noting that a recruiting firm has already drafted a job description and a website is up and running. In an email sent to his legislative colleagues, Democratic House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz, of Berlin, on Aug. 29 suggested the four lawmakers meet with a top adviser to Dalio Philanthropies and discuss the package of documents as soon as possible so they can get the program up and running. A spokesman for Senate President Pro Tempore Martin Looney said the New Haven Democrat accepted Aresimowicz’s invitation to meet before signing any agreements, proposals or resolutions presented to the new board. Dalio Philanthropies said it supported the idea of the speaker’s meeting with his fellow legislative leaders, noting it’s “very important for the students of Connecticut that we work together to advance this initiative.”

Barbara Dalio, who leads her foundation’s public education efforts, has said being exempt from public disclosure rules would allow the board to have sensitive conversations and members would be “more free to be open about disagreeing, coming to consensus.” She recently told the AP she understood people’s concerns about a possible lack of transparency but insisted the partnership and its activities will be made available to the public. She noted the board was bipartisan. Among the various documents the board members were asked to approve is a “transparency commitment.” The commitment calls for the board’s meetings, committees and working sessions to be conducted in closed session but notes the partnership will “communicate openly to the public about decisions that have been made and the logic behind them.” Some lawmakers and open government advocates have raised concerns about exempting the partnership from the state’s Freedom of Information Act.
