Sloper Plunge moved to Feb. 27

SOUTHINGTON — Participants in the annual Sloper Plunge fundraiser have a few more weeks to prepare as the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA has opted to move the event to Feb. 27.

The coldest winter weather showed up the last few days of January. Stepping outside for even a moment without a hat, mittens and proper clothing and the wind went right through you. Still, so far, the season has not been as cold as some winters. Records from the early 1940s earn Falls Village the top spot in the freezer section with a reading of minus 32 degrees. Yet, on the last weekend of January 2021, Cheshire residents were waking up to temperatures

Hunkered down on a quilt teacher Mary Cole has spread out, three children, bundled from head to toe in hats and coats, scarves and gloves, eagerly reach for one of the animal puppets to hold. The little group then arranges into a circle as the Fit By Nature class gets underway during a recent outing to Mixville Park. Cole is a health and physical education teacher. After a number of years teaching in the public school system, she decided to follow her heart and began her own business. It’s called Fit by Nature, LLC, for “active kids logged out and engaged in an outdoor classroom.”

Cole holds classrooms throughout the state. More than 50 children have been enrolled since classes began in September 2020.

To Cole, it’s not just her business. It’s her passion.

“Being in nature makes us feel good – and it’s scientifically proven,” said Cole, during the Mixville Park class, part of the Cheshire Parks and Recreation program offerings. “We are nature. It is fundamental to us,” she said.

Cole begins her class with a children’s song, meant to reconnect them to the natural world and all living things.

Cole sings “Good Morning, Dear Earth,” and the children sang after her, greeting things in nature such as a fox, birds, trees, flowers and the moon.

Still in their circle, Cole asked, “Elijah, what are you grateful for? What makes you happy?”

Elijah Cuprak, 5, takes his time until his sister, 6-yearold Rosalind reminds him about the fun they had riding bikes together earlier in the day.

In a quick change, Cole brings out fruit and vegetables — an apple, celery, banana and carrot, and puts them on the quilt in front of the children. “We’re going to use these to play a game to get us warmed up,” she told the children. The game is a version of Red Light, Green Light and is used to help teach self-regulation.

First the children identified the items as vegetable or fruit. What is this? asked Cole, holding up the celery. Everyone guessed correctly.

The fun begins as the kids run, walk in slow motion, and freeze. The giggling is non-stop.

She brings out peppermint for the kids to smell. “Peppermint makes me feel awake,” she said. The children get to smell orange, too. “Citrus is a happy smell,” said Cole. “It’s the smell of oranges and grapefruit.”

This begs the question: do you chop your own firewood? Then there’s the bigger question: are you a traditionalist and do you cut your firewood with an ax?

It’s amazing how many people do cut their own wood.

Whether or not you consider it a chore, it is a task that’s undertaken by both men and women. Cheshire women who have cut their firewood at one time or another include Fiona Pearson and Patty Niezgorski. Tracey Harrington fondly recalls chopping firewood with her stepfather. It’s also done by

One exception is that the agreement won’t be enforced if a spouse can convince the judge that, at the time of the divorce, the agreement is “unconscionable.” The law does not provide much guidance in defining “unconscionable.”

One judge found that if enforcement of the agreement would work an injustice to one of the parties, it is unconscionable. In another case, an appeals court said that unconscionability is something that the trial judges knows when he sees it based on all the evidence that is presented.

COMMENTARY

A fleeting romance with ... the wood pile

I am not a New Englander by birth. So, much of what I have come to understand as being iconic New England comes from what I learned as a kid reading “Little Women” or watching movies like “White Christmas” and “Holiday Inn” with Bing Crosby (was he even from New England?). I thought that everyone had maple syrup taps on the trees in their backyard, snowfall was measured by the feet, you didn’t need air conditioners and people ate brown bread and lobsters every night for supper, which they washed down with Moxie.

I now understand that New England is not quite like that and it is a heterogenous region. There are differences.

However, one thing that appears to be quite common is

When we became homeowners with our move into Cheshire, I do recall the hubby saying he could not wait to 1) to rake leaves, and 2) chop firewood. (I was all in.) The young husband put visions in my head. I saw a lean, wiry guy standing tall over a mile-high pile of perfectly split logs; his brawny biceps flexing while he rhythmically worked

Well, he did buy an ax. He got it from Hines. It was a beauty: a shiny, fire engine red model, and I swear there was gleaming satisfaction in his eyes when he brought it home. This was a proud man. That, I believe, was the extent of it. I personally have used that ax, much to his dismay, many a time, to cut things. I generally use it to cut tree roots out of the dirt.

This, I have come to understand, is a practice frowned on by most professional lumberjacks. But I do not believe I ever saw the hubby use that ax.

So while we do use our fireplace on occasion each winter and there is a copper barrel on the hearth that holds a few perfectly cut logs, you may be surprised where that wood comes from. Remember those mini-marts?
