FAREWELL TO WINTER
Redistricting will bring major changes to local state House districts By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff
In 2020, Cheshire Democrat Jim Jinks lost a nail-biter race against Wallingford Republican Craig Fishbein for the 90th House district. After initial reports called Jinks the winner, a tabulation error led to a recount revealing Fishbein had actually won by seven votes. There won’t be a rematch.

I was on Oak Avenue, on a Tuesday night, close to 9 p.m., in the pouring rain. I was soaked to the bone as soon as I got out of the car, and the temperature was 55degrees. These conditions made it highly likely that I might experience the annual event of the frog and salamander migration.

the brewery put together a team for Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day, an initiative giving women an opportunity to try their hand at beer making.
Cheshire Craft Brewing hosted a special project in alliance with the Pink Boots Society, an international advocacy group supporting women who want to learn the art of brewing beer. As reported by Record-Journal contributor Joy VanderLek,
Pink Boots, a nonprofit, launched Collaboration Brew Day to raise funds for scholarships and programming for women interested in the alcoholic beverage industry, especially those entering the craft beer industry. Collaboration Brew Day
also celebrates women in the industry. The local brew team included Jenn Frederick, taproom coordinator at the brewery, along with two female brewers-in-training, Sue Labulis and Lisa Bellmore. The women were assisted by brewer Scott DeMeo, one of the principals at Cheshire Craft Brewing. The team concocted a new product based on Freder-

Also launched this month in Cheshire is “Girls on the Run” a program empowering girls through physical activity and skill building aimed at boosting confidence — and helping them see how they can make positive changes in the world. Activities go beyond running and participation is open to girls of all levels of ability. Skill building helps participants set goals such as “what do you want to accomplish today.” The 10-week program ends with a 5K event that “celebrates the girls who have been progressing to their goal and finally achieve what they set out to do,” said Jessica Bell, Girls on the Run executive director. Giving girls a chance to learn skills that set them on the course to achieve, whatever their goals, is a positive move. Talk explores life of enigmatic artist Kahlo
Jane Oneail, founder of Culturally Curious, a public art education and appreciation programming company, was the featured speaker. Frida Kahlo might be one of the more enigmatic artists in the modern-day art world,
Kahlo was born in Mexico in 1907. Her mother was of Indian-Spanish descent and fanatically religious. Kahlo had a strong bond with her father, a German-Jewish photographer who fought against Hitler and who struggled with epilepsy. Kahlo contracted polio at age 6, causing her left leg to be malformed, a condition that led to bullying at school
and likely factored in her emotional and artistic development. A trolley car accident at age 18 left Kahlo with a broken spine, collarbone, dislocated ribs, fractured bones and crushed bones in her foot, and she was impaled by an iron handrail that pierced her uterus. She survived but was in debilitating pain most of her life. She also needed to wear hard plaster corsets as a result of her spine injuries. Her indigenous Tehuana
dresses and embellished tunics helped to camouflage the medical appliances and physical deformities. Kahlo married at age 22. As madly in love as she was with her husband, Diego Rivera, the world-renowned muralist, Kahlo suffered from his infidelities and his absences. “There have been two great tragedies in my life. One was the trolley and the other was Diego. Diego was by far the worst,” the artist said.

Of the 200 paintings she completed in her lifetime, about a quarter are self-portraits.
In one of her early paintings, an important statement piece from 1936, Kahlo painted a family tree containing her parents and both sets of grandparents. It was done at a time when Hitler had outlawed interracial marriage, said Oneail. “Here she is celebrating the fact that she is the product of an interracial marriage and using the family tree to prove that.”

Kahlo was proud of her Mexican heritage and interested in social justice. Oneail said Kahlo’s signature unibrow and mustache pushed against societal expectations. “Anything that was expected of a young woman, she would push back,” said Oneail. “She wanted to determine for herself throughout her life, what was beautiful, and in the process, she became a style icon.”

What does it mean to ‘eat a rainbow’? Fruits and vegetables come in a range of colors — red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple — and their richhues aren’t just nature’s way of adding color in our lives; they serve a nutritional purpose. Therefore, it’s important to “eat a rainbow” — meaning you eat fruits and vegetables from each color and get a variety of important vitamins and nutrients that can prevent disease.
A rainbow of choices Red fruits and vegetables help to protect against heart
attacks and some cancers. Lycopene is the main source of their red color and some of the most popular red foods are tomatoes, apples, grapes, cherries, and strawberries. If you’re feeling adventurous, pomegranates and blood oranges taste great and are chock full of nutrients.

Of course, when we think of orange foods, oranges are the first to come to mind. But there are plenty of orange and yellow foods to choose from, including bananas, carrots, yellow pep-

Snack away. Try snacking on fresh fruit. Try carrot and bell pepper strips with a low-fat dip, or baked kale with fresh salsa. Have canned and frozen options on hand. Just be sure to read labels — sometimes canned options can have lots of added sodium or sugar. Consider a fruit smoothie in the morning. You can easily pile fruits and veggies into a healthy smoothie. Think seasonally. Take advantage of fruits and vegetables in season. Do more meal prep. Chopping up a few vegetables in advance and storing them in your fridge can make you more likely to reach for them when throwing together meals. Keep fruit where you can see it. Place several ready-to-eat washed whole fruits in a bowl or store chopped colorful fruits in a glass bowl in the refrigerator to tempt a sweet tooth. Explore the produce aisle and choose something new. Variety and color are key to a healthy diet.

Redistricting From A1
added Republican-friendly Middlefield. “I assume they wanted to get as far away from me as possible,”Jinks said Friday, March 11, about the 90th district shifting east. “I guess I’ll take that as a compliment.” The new maps, approved in November by the state’s Reapportionment Commission, will go into effect with this November’s state election. While state Senate lines will see relatively few changes, House districts shifted considerably. Cheshire Democratic Town Chairwoman Courtney Cullinan had harsher criticism for the 90th district shift, calling it “blatantly political” and “egregious,” in an interview with The Connecticut Mirror.
bein said. “Until their passing, my maternal grandparents lived there for many years, and my family runs a factory in town. I used to work there during summers from college. Through them, I have been a part of Middlefield for decades.” But while the changes in the 90th may benefit Republicans, other redistricting changes arguably benefit Democrats. Middlefield is currently in the 82nd district, held by Democratic state Rep. Michael Quinn of Meriden. By putting Middlefield into the 90th beginning this fall, the new maps pushed the 82nd district westward, making it a Meriden-only district, likely helping Quinn and the Democrats. Meriden tends to vote for Democrats, and the 82nd district candidate doesn’t have to face an out-of-town challenger or court out-of-town voters.
Fishbein said he was pleased to learn he would be representing Middlefield, citing personal connections to the area.
“Any time a district is comprised of only one community it makes it slightly easier to run for both incumbents and challengers,” Quinn said “The possibility of represent- in an email. “In the 2020 ing Middlefield is especially race, I was better known in heartwarming for me,” Fish- Meriden because that is where I am from and my op-
ponent was better known in Middlefield and Rockfall because that is where he is from.” Rockfall is a village within Middlefield. In the 2022 race, all candidates in the 82nd will be from the same city, so name recognition becomes slightly less of a factor in theory, Quinn said.
Prison population The 10-year reapportionment is based on the 2020 census, which saw population gains in some areas and losses in others. It also reflected a federal law stipulating that prisoners were to be counted in the census as residents of their last known address, not as residents in the towns that house the prison. Counting inmates as residents of the towns where they are incarcerated inflates population data for those municipalities, while decreasing the population of other municipalities and having a negative impact on their legislative and municipal voting districts, according to a statement from Gov. Ned Lamont’s office in May 2021 when he signed legislation allowing the change. Cheshire is home to the Cheshire Correctional Institution, among other Department of Correction facilities.

Removing the prison population decreased the population of Cheshire’s 103rd district, represented by Democrat Liz Linehan, by about 1,300 residents. As of the 2020 Census, Connecticut state representa-

tives represented an average of 23,880 residents. Reapportionment shifted the lines of the 103rd to the south. The district will now include more of Cheshire and part of Hamden, in addition to part of Wallingford. It loses a portion of Southington. “The districts are drawn to have a certain number of constituents. So having the prison out of that calculation, the numbers were made up elsewhere,” Linehan said. “I’m very happy that I received more of Cheshire, and a part of Hamden, but I cannot say whether or not the laws applying to prison gerrymandering had any effect on that. Had this been passed and gone into effect in a non-redistricting year, that answer would have been different.” Linehan said moving the 90th out of Cheshire was interesting, but she wasn’t surprised. “Cheshire did not lose overall representation, as a portion of town now includes part of the 83rd. The number of representatives stays the same,” she said.

“They might have wanted to protect (Fishbein) from Cheshire,” Mushinsky said about the change. “I do think it helped him to not have Cheshire.” Cheshire’s northeastern portion will now be part of the 83rd district, which also include parts of Meriden and Berlin. It is currently represented by Democat Catherine Abercrombie, who has announced she is not running for re-election in November. Fishbein’s 90th district also picked up part of Wallingford formerly represented by Republican Rep. Vincent Candelora in the 86th district. “I knew my district was going to get affected when the legislature agreed to take the prisons out of the districts,” Fishbein said. “A portion of Liz Linehan’s district (the 103rd), I knew those individuals would come out of her district and probably affect mine.” Fishbein’s Democratic opponent Rebecca Hyland, of Wallingford, said, despite appearing to be a gift to Republicans, the change in the 90th district presents an opportunity to reach new voters.
Shifting Fishbein’s district to the east also didn’t surprise Democrat Mary Mushinsky, who represents Wallingford’s 85th district.
Hyland announced her candidacy last week. See Redistricting, A13

“A large portion of Middlefield is unaffiliated,” Hyland said. “Middlefield is a smaller town. There are fewer people to reach out to, but we can make some inroads. People are getting tired of the nastiness and want to know how we’re going to solve some of these problems.”
Elim Park Place welcomes you to enjoy an
Mushinsky’s all-Wallingford 85th lost population and shifted northwest to pick up more densely populated areas of town. In exchange, the district lost some constituents on the eastern side of I-91.
Bipartisan The state’s redistricting process involves a bipartisan commission. Other states have had redistricting settled by the courts and some allow the governing party in the legislature to draw the maps. “That is my least favorite,” Mushinsky said. “Ours is equally represented. The other party has veto power, while still trying to fit the character of the district.” Linehan was pleased to pick up more of Cheshire, she said, including the second and fourth Town Council districts. Linehan said the inclusion of Hamden and shift out of Southington brings the 103rd ”much closer to the way the 103rd district was drawn prior to the 2010 redistricting.” Republican state Rep. Lezlye Zupkus represents the 89th district, which covers western Cheshire and Prospect and Bethany. Candelora, who serves as House minority leader, was a member of the Reapportionment Commission. “We’re trying to keep all the important principles intact, as you know, respecting the integrity of towns and the demographic makeup of the communities, as well as where the incumbents are located,” Candelora told The Connecticut Mirror. mgodin@record-journal.com 203-317-2255 Twitter: @Cconnbiz

Sweet Claude’s last day at the South Main Street location will be April 17. The plan is to have the shop ready to reopen at Ball & Socket May 1. The new space will give Sweet Claude’s 3,300 square feet of operational space for production of its homemade ice cream.
Town Employee of the Year named The 2022 Connie Wallace Employee of the Year in Cheshire is Michelle Piccerillo. The announcement came during the March 8 Town Council meeting, where Piccerillo, director of youth and human services, was presented with the award. Council members took time to thank Piccerillo for being a vital part of bringing a sense of normalcy to Cheshire during the pandemic. She has worked for
the town for over 20 years. Council Vice-Chairman Tim Slocum presented Picerillo a certificate of appreciation and said the proclamation was one of the longest he has ever awarded due to Piccerillo’s lengthy list of contributions to the community.
Historian’s work recognized The Cheshire Town Council recognized the town’s former town historian, Jeanne Chesanow, on Feb. 8, for her work in restoring the historic district in Cheshire and her overall commitment to preserving Cheshire’s history. Chesanow was appointed as Town Historian in 2012, during which time she produced a number of written works chronicling various aspects of the community’s history. During the acknowledgment, council Vice-Chair Tim Slocum brought up a number of those publica-
tions, including the first on trails and properties written in 1994. He presented Chesanow with a certificate of appreciation, and thanked her for her service to Cheshire. The volunteer position was taken over recently by Diane Calabro.

Since January, the class has been painting larger-than-life subjects at Cheshire Brewing Company, 125 Commerce St. The group first decided on subjects, then sketched out and transferred the designs onto canvas.

One of the student artists is Marion Gansley, who said she has learned a lot in the weeks since starting the class.
Learning to paint with others was unusual, not just for Gansley, but for most of the “Paint Large” artists. “Painting is not a team sport,” she said. “Painting as a team is different. We had to adjust to the concept of painting with one another.”
The Strawberry Festival, part of community life for over 80 years, will feature craft vendors, live music, food vendors and strawberry shortcake. The festival serves as a fundraiser for the First Congregational Church, which only runs one other fundraising event.

Other new skills acquired in the class included the study of glazing, as a technique and a material. “It’s not something I normally have done,” said Gansley, adding that the skill was not hard, but the technique did need to be learned.
After a two-year hiatus, the First Congregational Church of Cheshire’s Strawberry Festival is coming back. The annual event, canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID19 concerns, will be held on the church green on June 11.
