BIRTHDAY GATHERING
COPING WITH COVID-19
Faith community carries on with services, support By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
Cheshire, like many towns, has many houses of worship. There’s Temple Beth David, the First Congregational Church, Cheshire Lutheran Church, Oasis Church and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, among others. As the COVID-19 pandemic has required large gatherings to be curtained until further notice, these local churches have risen to the occasion.
Cheshire Lutheran Church Pastor David Rowold has moved church services online. Not able to meet under one roof, worship services are available on YouTube, with two services available on Sundays. Additionally, CLC has a bulletin online for those at home to follow along. From the Cheshire Lutheran Church website, Pastor Rowold’s message is clear: “We may not be able to be together in the same place
this Sunday, but we can still come together to hear the Word of the Lord and to receive His gifts of forgiveness and comfort in these difficult times. He is our refuge and strength who will not leave you or forsake you.” At Temple Beth David, Rabbi Micah Ellenson’s office is open. It’s game on for these families By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
In these extraordinary days, an extraordinary birthday was celebrated in an extraordinary way. Elim Park resident Elaine Kuhrt celebrated her 94th birthday on Saturday. Seen here, Kuhrt is serenaded by her family (three floors below) as she enjoys their attentions from her apartment balcony. At left, Kuhrt’s daughter, Marilyn Faulkner with granddaughter Tracy Kuhrt. At far right, grandson Scott Kuhrt and grandson Geoff Swanson with Elaine’s five great grandchildren. — Joy VanderLek
All across Cheshire, there are houses full of children, moms and dads, who because of the COVID-19 pandemic are together 24/ 7. They are staying safe and staying home. While the Cheshire Public Schools have gone to online instruction, there are still a
lot of hours in the day to fill. Most families are not used to being cooped up with one another at this level.

Arriving at the Cheshire Academy offices, she found out otherwise. “Then I realized, ‘Oh my God, this is real.’ It was crazy. It feels like a dream. It was so unreal,” she said.

Q: What is CBD? A: Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, is a compound found in industrial hemp plants that offer numerous of benefits.
Q: Can CBD make you high? A: The marijuana plant is high in tetrahydrocannabinol or
THC and very low in CBD. CBD is not psychoactive so it does not change a person’s state of mind when they consume it.
Q: What is THC? A: THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol, the main
compound found in marijuana plants. THC is what gives marijuana its psychoactive properties or “high” effects.
Q: Is all CBD the same? A: No, many companies extract CBD from the seed or the
stem, which is an easier and cheaper process. We extract it from the flower to provide the highest concentration of CBD. We also use third-party testing and all of our products include a QR code to provide customers access to our lab reports. Because as the industry grows many companies are unable to show transparency like we do.

Ten Mile Lowlands: A hideaway for social distancing By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
Okay, here I am at home social distancing along with most everyone else in town. Up to this point, that means keep the recommended distance from others. Meet-ups, at least for me, are confined to online and phone conversations.
I have not been confined to my house though. I get outside every day for fresh air and exercise. However, what I do is different than most, I think. You see, I go to open spaces and places that do not get all the traffic, that other places may get. I’m telling you about them, because you may want

will have fun running on the leaf-padded path, although low-lying wet areas can be mucky. So use caution. In addition to the vernal pools to check out, there’s also massive drifts, a collection really, of wild mountain laurel. I can’t say I’ve ever seen them in bloom, but they are beautiful none-the-less.
And right now, it’s an amazing place with vernal pools. In those ponds, amazing creatures are coming to life. There’s spring peepers on the pond edges. Their highpitched peeps are hard to miss. Wood frogs are here as well, calling and mating. They sound like tense chickens. Green frogs sound like rubber bands being strummed.
There are some thorny multi-flora roses at the beginning of the trail, but do not let that stop you. The path opens up into a glorious woodland, just waiting for you to explore.

plication process and believes her personal interview and essay, steps in the scholarship application process, helped to lock in her acceptance.
“I talked about making the world a better place and how one person can change things,” she said.
Galloza calls herself wellrounded. She is active in sports, playing volleyball and track and field. She excels in her studies. While she loves math, geometry in particular, she calls American history her favorite subject. “My teacher compelled us to do extra research,” she said. “We need to do what we can to affect change where it’s needed. It’s important. We don’t want to repeat the past.”
Galloza has a passion for gardening, and with her mother, has been growing organic tomatoes for a number of years that she then donates to local food pantries. “We’re incredibly proud of her, not just because of all the hard work she’s done to get to this point, but because she’s an amazing person,”
Inez Galloza said. “This really has been on Chloe’s mind and wish list for a long, long time.” Director of Admission Sara Lynn Leavenworth praised Galloza before presenting her with her scholarship. “You have demonstrated to us that you have the ambition to lead by example, and
the ability to inspire your peers to maximize their potential—admirable traits of a student leader and a Town Scholar,” Leavenworth told Galloza. As for her future path, Galloza’s may steer toward a career in marine biology or perhaps being a detective working on cold cases.

As much as we love our historic building in the center of town, if it were gone tomorrow, First Congregational Church would still be here, right in the center of Cheshire. The church is the people. And the people of First Church are still active and engaged trying to love God and our neighbors as ourselves,” Campbell said. “Perhaps one of the most significant contributions faith can make during this

much and that her 12-yearold is getting “super antsy” right about now.
From A1
While some people are really struggling, feeling frustrated and depressed, Charlene Rubbo Dusek is appreciating family time. “We are getting outside every day as a family and my house is tidier,” she said, adding that the slower pace is welcome, especially in the evenings.
“It’s all about having fun,” said Diane. Maggie wrote clues on sticky notes, some of them rhyming, all of them intriguing, and then posted them to be found on the piano, the sugar canister, the wall, outside and all over. The clues led to a box that led to a grand finale that involved a padlock and a prize. Each participant was timed as well.
Parents also are making use of the plethora of online offerings during this time, from animal programs, such as Ferncroft Wildlife Rescue’s “Meet the Possums” to children’s author Mo Willems’ Facebook doodling
“She is such a creative kid,” said her mother. Amanda Coulombe-Dobler said her sons, ages 7 and 11, “are basically each other’s' playmates.” She came up with the "Brother Challenge.” The boys pick “idea” tasks and then pick from the “Creator Box” which is stocked with material items from around the house. Task examples include building a Lego creation together and seeing how tall you can make it. That’s worth six points. Another idea would be to find and agree on an amazing dessert recipe to make together. As the points accumulate

Amanda said she hopes the boys begin to see “themselves as a team, and maybe an opportunity to work together, which is becoming more and more challenging given their ages.”

Virtual playdates are popular with parents in Cheshire. Stephanie Stern-Carlson said, “My friends and I have gotten very creative about making virtual play dates for our children. Yesterday we played charades by posting a video. The family that got the right answer then made another video clue. We also are video chatting and I know the Facebook messaging app has games the two people chatting can play together, Stephanie said, adding, “I actually don’t feel very isolated, as I know we’re all in this together.”
cannot provide the same educational experience as face-to-face instruction, especially for students with individual needs. “There are some students in our community that require extensive individual support which under the current health guidance is frankly impossible to deliver,” Solan said. The district will focus on addressing any regression in learning among the high needs population after school resumes. “It’s definitely going to require more intensive supports for those students when they return,” he said.
