LIFELONG LEARNING

Filmmaker shares latest documentary at library By Joy VanderLek The Citizen

Documentarian and author Steve Hamm brought his film “A River Speaks” to the Cheshire Public Library last week for a program entitled, “Saving the Mill River.” The Friends of the Cheshire Public Library and the Coalition for a Sustainable Cheshire co-sponsored the April 11 event, which drew a large crowd.

Elim Park University is set to mark its first anniversary. Since May of 2021, residents of the Elim Park assisted living community in Cheshire have both taught and attended classes on various topics — from American presidential history to climate change science. “We’ve had a wonderful response,” said Wayne Detzler, founding member and dean of Elim Park University. “We’ve had excellent attendance in all of our courses and terrific interest (from potential teachers).” Pictured: Ben Water teaches a course on pottery as part of Elim Park University. “I love the Mill River and I love Cheshire,” Hamm told attendees, pointing out that he and his family lived in town for a number of years before moving to New Haven, their current home. Hamm’s documentary opens with a view of the Mill River in winter; a See ‘A River Speaks’, A25

Resident heads successful salon By Karla Santos Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN — Denny Norwood was working at a West Haven hair salon and decided she wanted to open her own business. She visited Meriden and liked the community. In 2006, Norwood purchased a house at 614 W. Main St. and transformed it into Romy’s Beauty Salon. “I didn’t know if it was going to work,” she said.

Today, Norwood is thankful. Her business has continued to prosper, even through the pandemic. “They welcomed me, they accepted me,” she said of the community. Romy’s Beauty Salon offers services including coloring, cuts, relaxers, deep conditioning and keratin treatments. Romy is Norwood’s nickname. Her maiden name Romely. See Salon, A12

Sometimes you can see me picking up trash. I am also eagle-eyed when it comes to spotting those pink and green dog waste bags that can be found just off the trail. Inadvertently, someone has decided to pick up the waste and launch it into pricker bushes (multi-flora rosa) or by the water at the Lock 12 parking lot. I have no pride. I go pick it up. Most times, I will haul it to the trash can. I confess, on other occasions, I put it on the side of the trail, sort of a marker or “Landmark of Shame.” (I wonder if a few more dog waste trash cans would be an incentive for pet parents.)

This is not to say I don’t notice the good stuff. I do. For instance, the River Birch tree plantings along the fencing by Bozzuto’s are beautiful. On the opposite side of the trail, by the water, there are gorgeous shrubs and wildflowers. Plus, on the trail by the canal overlook near Route 70 and one of the trolley abutments, we found a stretch of delicious grapes last year. They were prolific, and we stuffed ourselves accordingly. I don’t think the birds were happy with the competition.

I think I first noticed it with someone tagging a wooden bench right before COVID shut everything down. Soon after, the brand-new sheathing on the sheds at Lyon & Billard got hit. I think they cleaned it up. However, the other day when I was walking, I saw graffiti on the wall again. It wasn’t as easy to spot, as it was behind a stand of mugwort (another invasive). And right after that, I saw graffiti on a metal fence. It was right before the turn onto the new section of trail near Dalton Enterprises.

The CT Invasive Working Group based out of UConn requests you report the vine if you come across it. I have done so. The plant has spread to just about every town in our state. It’s light green with small, saucer-shaped cups and barbs which run along the length of the vine. The leaves are a triangular-shape, and the plant produces blue and green berries in summer.

R-J Invitational rounds back into form By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff

SCHOLASTIC TRACK & FIELD

MERIDEN — Friday was a celebration of area track and field. Seven squads took part in the annual Record-Journal Invitational on a sunfilled breezy day at Platt High School.

Benigni captured the 800 (2:22.9) and the 1,600 (5:16.20). Both times are her personal bests for the outdoor season. “There was some really good competition today,” Benigni said. “In the mile, I just wanted to hit some splits, and the 800 had a lot of competition and that fueled me to do really well.”

All of the coaches worked together to officiate and score the event, which featured hundreds of local athletes from Southington, Cheshire, Sheehan, Lyman Hall, Coginchaug, Maloney and host Platt. The day featured varsity, JV and co-ed relays and was highlighted by some great individual performances. Athletes were allowed a maximum of two events apiece and several came away as double-wintwenty ners.

Lombino, the Sheehan sophomore, had the breakout meet at the R-J. She won the long jump at 16 feet, 5

Invitational Another big highlight on the girls side was Maloney high jumper Shaelyn Murphy. She not only set a new Maloney girls outdoor record, she competed against the boys and was the top overall performer in the event. Murphy’s jump of 5-6 matched the school record

she set during the indoor season. On Friday, 5-6 bested Platt’s Kymani Johnson and Sheehan’s Jelan Kollie by two inches. Murphy has already qualified for Nationals after making it in the indoor season. Other individual winners for the girls on Friday were Coginchaug’s Allison Vigue

in the pole vault (14-9), Maloney’s Savannah Vasquez in the 3,200 (12:55.40) and Southington’s Hailey Zembrzuski in the javelin (11000). “I just came out for the team and everyone was cheering me on and I just did what I could do.” Zembrzuski said. “This is only my second meet ever. I just started. I knew I could come in and throw, but I impressed myself on that throw today.” Sheehan had two female winners in the throws: Darla Jagrosse in the shot put (33-

11½) and Madison DiPasquale in discus (119-6). The day started with a win by Platt in the 4x100 co-ed relay. Estella Delacruz, Dayanara Gonzalez, Brandon Carrion and Zyair Coleman crossed in 47.80. Platt’s Vittorio Church won the triple jump in 37-1½ inches and fellow Panther Reggie Darkah won shot put with a toss of 49-9½. Cheshire’s Robert DiNatale won the 3,200 easily with a time of 10:31.70.

Cheshire coach Allen Dvarskas said the meet was well run and well organized. “This was a nice opportunity to show themselves today and we are looking forward to where they go from here,” Dvarskas said. “It was a good day.” Lyman Hall had a pair of winners on the boys side. Mason Williams threw a career-best 132-8 to take discus and Chance DeCrescenzo was tops in pole vault at 12-6.

VISIT MYRECORDJOURNAL.COM/ATHLETES TO VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE NOMINEES!

BRANDON ALVARADO

AVA HARRIS

That photo of Brandon Alvarardo was taken during football, when the Wilcox junior was a two-way standout at safety and slot receiver. Turns out Alvarado is a fair hand at baseball, too. Last Thursday, Alvarado fired a 7-0 no-hitter at Whitney Tech. Alvarado struck out 15 and walked 3. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. That put him at .500 against CTC pitching entering the week.

Cheshire girls lacrosse steamed into the week at 5-1 with an offense that seems to punch harder each time out. Junior Ava Harris leads the way. With a pair of back-to-back 7-point games against Glastonbury and Newtown, Harris has 25 goals and 11 assists heading into showdowns with SCC rivals Guilford and Hand. She had a season-best (so far) 5 goals vs. East Lyme and Hall.

CHRIS BARKASY

EMILY HART

Sheehan shortstop Chris Barkasy can produce the routine plays and hits and, man, can he produce the dramatic ones, too. In Monday’s 8-7 rivalry win over Lyman Hall, the Titans rallied from 7-1 down with seven runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, highlighted by Barkasy’s bases-clearing triple to tie the game. Barkasy also tripled to fuel Sheehan’s 7th-inning comeback on April 7 at Cromwell.

With Emily Hart in the circle and at the plate, the Platt softball Panthers are clearly a force to be reckoned with. The junior right-hander returned to the lineup last week and Platt has gone 3-2 since, capped by Hart’s 3-hit shutout of Conard on Monday. Hart struck out 14 that day. She also fanned 14 in a 1-hitter vs. New Britain and 15 in a 3-hitter vs. Middletown. At the plate, Hart is 8-for-18.

JUSTIN HACKETT

JAYNA MACKENZIE

Prior to Sheehan’s stunning rally Monday, Lyman Hall’s Justin Hackett was cued up for AOTW. Even with the loss, Hackett had to remain. The senior hit a towering 2-run HR and stole five bases, including one of home. Last Wednesday, Hackett pitched a complete game and delivered a 2-run double in the bottom of the 7th to beat Notre Dame 6-5. You see why he’s going on to play at Bryant University.

The Lady Titans haven’t lost a step from last year’s envelope-pushing run to the Class S state semifinals. If anything, given the scoring of Jayna MacKenzie, they’re poised to push that envelope further in 2022. The senior captain scored six goals in each of Sheehan’s first four games, including on Thursday against Hamden, when she hit the 100-goal milestone for her career.

Salon From A1

Norwood, 46, recalled that when she was growing up in the Dominican Republic, her family and neighbors did each other’s hair all the time. A runway model in the Dominican Republic, she said owning a salon wasn’t precisely her dream but when she immigrated to the United States in 1998, the hair skills came in handy. She began working at a salon in the Bronx, washing hair and cleaning up.

Cheshire resident Denny Norwood, owner of Romy’s Beauty Salon.

“I started like that and little by little I advanced, I progressed, until I finally opened my own business,” Norwood said.

Norwood left modeling when she came to the U.S. because she had to focus on

ular, but women are now getting botox and keratin treatments instead. Some women are leaving all of those processes behind and embracing their natural curls. Norwood mentioned there is

a specific “curly cut” used on clients. She said the same results can be achieved by cutting hair in layers. She prefers doing it this way as it gives clients the option of having an appropriate style in case they want to straighten their hair for a special occasion. Norwood said part of the reason women now prefer curly styles is that some straightening treatments have chemicals that can be harmful over time. Norwood said that using a curly or straight hair style is a personal decision but added curly hair requires more care and can be expensive because of the amount of products used to style curls. Jorge Cameron, of Meriden, is temporarily working at Romy’s Beauty Salon while he transitions into opening his own salon in Middletown.

Cameron wanted to learn more about ethnic hair and styles. “I always wanted to expand my horizons when it came to doing hair, which is the reason why I joined a salon instead of a barbershop, because I come from a barbershop background,” he said. It is the second salon Cameron has worked at. He said his mother and friends have been clients of the business. “I knew I could learn from her,” Cameron said. “She took me with open arms and I appreciate that about her. I look at her as a role model when it comes to doing hair and managing a business.” For more information about the salon or to make an appointment, call 203-6300000. ksantos@record-journal.com 203-317-2364 Twitter: @KarlaSantosNews

Our library is raising money to host a community mural as part of Wallingford’s 350th anniversary. The mural will be a collaborative project celebrating the people who live in our town. Local artist Rashmi Talpade painted a giant tree in the library and will help residents create decorative “leaves” with images of themselves and their families. Most images will be photographs, but self-portraits in other mediums will also be welcome. As the leaf-shaped images are created, community participants will see them affixed to the tree and watch the development of the mural, akin to a tree sprouting leaves. We are seeking $5,000 to cover the costs. The Wallingford Public Library is excited to showcase this beautiful, visual reflection of the people who make up our community.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

The Wallingford Chorus was founded in 1970 to celebrate the Town of Wallingford’s Tercentenary. For over fifty years, the chorus has continuously performed and promoted choral music in central CT. It’s our way of raising spirits and inspiring new thoughts, giving our audience a chance to lose themselves in music as a break from everyday life. We perform two concerts a year, one in December and one in May. Our material varies from singing light repertoires to more complex pieces including selections of multicultural works. Most recently, however, we have performed songs from Broadway, the cinema, and the 60’s. We are a fun group! We want our audiences to have fun with us. Do not be surprised if you come to one of our concerts and you are asked to sing along! Your donation to the great give will go directly to paying our amazing Music Director and Accompanist, and allowing us to purchase new and exciting music to perform for you.

‘A River Speaks’ quiet, country scene. The crystal-clear waters bounce along riffles and runs between forested edges in an ever-widening channel, as the river winds through suburban and urban landscapes and empties into Long Island Sound. From the opening moments of the documentary – which Hamm narrates – one can almost hear the angst in the filmmaker’s voice. “These amazing bodies are our sources of water, for drinking and farming, our playgrounds, and our fishing holes. We write songs and poems about them. We love our rivers, but not nearly enough,” Hamm states. “We use them as dumping grounds for human and industrial waste, our road salt, our lawn fertilizers … Unfortunately, when we kill our rivers, we kill ourselves.”

After the screening, Hamm took questions from the audience, assisted by state Rep. Mary Mushinsky, who is also executive director for River Advocates of South-Central CT.

gins locally, and that individuals and small groups can accomplish a great deal.

Also, Hamm spoke about his recent collaboration with an international collective made up of community and faith leaders, environmentalists, activists and scientists. The group, “The Pivot Project,” sees an opportunity for a global reset following the pandemic.

During the library program, Fiona Pearson, co-chair of the local group, spoke about its involvement with numerous Mill River projects.

Hamm’s affiliation with the outfit resulted in his new book, “The Pivot.” “The way we are living is not sustainable and we really need to pivot in new directions to live more resiliently and more sustainably; in balance with nature, but also in harmony with each other,” said Hamm.

Hamm’s overriding message Hamm’s film recounts the important role the Mill River to the library audience was that change at any level behas played across time – from commerce, to travel, to recreation. And throughout the film, the voices of local residents, business owners, community leaders, environmental activists and conservationists are heard. Nicole Davis, watershed coordinator with Save the Sound, is one such voice. “Honestly, the most important thing we can do to save the Mill River and to protect the Mill River is to be -----conscious of what we’re doing on land, and remembering that we’re connected to the river,” Davis says, adding that when working on your yard, remember “fertilizers and pesticides all end up washing into the river.” Yale professor Gabe Benoit is also featured in the film. He lives in New Haven, just a few blocks from the Mill River. “I row on it and walk along its banks with my dog,” he says. “There’s a quote, ‘If there’s magic on earth, it’s contained in water.’ And I think that applies to the Mill River.”

Coalition for a Sustainable Cheshire is an example of this.

Coalition members monitored bacteria levels in the river last summer with River Advocates of South-Central CT, and more recently participated in the Winter Salt Watch, a national road salt awareness project with the Izaak Walton Conservation League.

Documentarian and author Steve Hamm is shown with Coaliton for a Sustainable Cheshire chairs Fiona Pearson, left, and Karen Schnitzer at a screening of Hamm’s film, “A River Speaks.” Photo by Joy VanderLek
