Local residents and youth groups have joined in, too. Anne and Henry McNulty, members of First Congregational Church, have been at it since March. “I was astonished how many bottles, cans, and beverage containers we picked up on just several small stretches along Cheshire streets, including more than 100 (alcohol) nips – many that might have eventually contaminated our streams and rivers,” said Anne McNulty.

The members of The Great Global (solo) Trash Pick-Up will continue their forays, picking up trash through the month, and hope that it’s possible to promote a bigger, more formally organized community effort next year. First Congregational Church’s Anne McNulty, along with her husband Henry, have been picking up trash around town since March.

News Briefs Yetta Augar re-appointed to tourism term Chamber of Commerce President Yetta Augur was recently appointed by the Town Council to a second two-year term on the Board of Directors for the Central
Connecticut Regional Tourism District. The regional tourism district covers the central Connecticut River valley and the shoreline, and provides visitor and meeting information on the 65 towns and cities that make up that area, Cheshire included.
Augar said one of her tasks is to make sure the Middletown visitors center is well stocked with maps and fliers that represent the town. Those materials are also available through the the Chamber of Commerce for Cheshire residents. Her term on the Tourism District Board of Directors runs until December 2022. In accepting the position, Augar noted the town’s recent economic growth with plans for multiple breweries and restaurants, as well as

The possibility of adding disc golf is also being looked at as an option for recreation. Because of Mixville’s unique terrain, the course could easily become 5-star rated, potentially attracting visitors from all over the state, according to Gawlak. The “temporary” shift that many of us made a year ago to work from home has given way to a more permanent reality: “WFH” may be here to stay, at least in some capacity. And for some Connecticut homeowners, that means working on the couch is no longer working for them at all. If you’ve been daydreaming about a dedicated home office space in your home but don’t quite know where to begin, we’ve got some ideas to help you get started.
DECIDE ON THE DESK
If you’ve been using the kitchen table, a card table or your lap as your go-to desk at home, you’re not alone. This transient work station situation is one of the biggest reasons homeowners have for creating a dedicated home office space—not to mention the backaches, headaches and random muscle pain that goes with these setups.
A small donation is requested, but it won’t be required. The production used the school’s recording studio, typically used for video production classes. Even with all the precautions, the cast has had two cases of COVID-19 crop up, requiring the entire cast to go into quarantine twice. The exact date for the release of “Little Women” has yet to be determined.
Drug Take Back day The Cheshire Police Department, Chesprocott Health District, and Cheshire Human Services are partnering together for National Drug Take Back Day. The purpose of this event is for the public to dispose of their unused or expired medications. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue and is a strategy in reducing the misuse and abuse of prescription medications. See News Briefs, A8
HOW DO I DESIGN A HOME OFFICE?
Choosing your desk is a critical part of your work from home setup, because it will not only be a focal point in the room, but it needs to be fully functional for your needs. Does your desk have enough room to sit comfortably while holding your oversized monitor (or two)? Do you have room to spread out paperwork, if that’s what your job calls for? Does it have built-in cord keepers, or drawers for storage?
YOU ASK, WE ANSWER:
to the public to give access to the recording.
Consider how your workday normally progresses and what challenges you’ve faced working from random surfaces throughout your home, and be sure your desk meets your needs. Once you find a design that’s fully functional (we’re looking at you, adjustable standing desks!), it’s time to decide on the style of your desk: Sleek and modern? Boho chic? Or perhaps something more traditional? Let your desk set the tone for the rest of this room—and don’t forget to have fun with it. After all, designing your own office space is one of the perks of working from home!
LIGHT YOUR WAY
For some of us, having a brightly lit space signals the focus that our jobs demand. For others, working by the light of a desk lamp or a sun-soaked window is how they prefer to operate. Think about the tasks you do throughout the day and how light would help improve upon them. Are you on video calls throughout the day? If so, a well-lit
room that negates harsh shadows would be helpful. Do you work on a monitor all day? Consider how natural light will filter in and if it will create a glare on your screen throughout the day. If your home already has overhead lighting, a desk lamp or floor lamp may be just what you need to further illuminate dark corners, and if you don’t have windows in your office, they’ll help create balanced lighting that may just help keep you motivated through yet another virtual meeting.
STORAGE
While working from home has many perks, storage can be a bit of a challenge. You may be fine with a functional metal storage cabinet in your home office, or you may gravitate more towards something more decorative. Again, functionality is very important here; you want to make sure your storage solutions won’t be bulging at the seams in 2 months. Don’t be afraid to think outside the (storage) box here. If setting up your home office in a guest bedroom, for instance, consider utilizing a dresser or armoire as your storage solution. Bookcases can hold jars or vases used for holding office supplies; open shelves can serve as a mix of artful display and function by holding books, photos and folders or other office gear.
And while you’re thinking about storage, don’t forget to consider creative solutions for hiding your multiple power cords. Smart and streamlined solutions like those from Yamazaki do a great job keeping things neat without breaking the bank.
PERSONALIZATION
Last but not least, it’s time to think about personalizing your office (at Calcagni, this is always our favorite part!). Perhaps the best part of working from home, making your office feel like your own space is an integral part of setting up “shop.” After all, this is where you’ll be spending hours of your day! Bonus: You don’t have to run your ideas by an office manager. Artwork, photographs, paint color, furniture and lighting all come together to create an office that reflects your design aesthetic and your work style. You may prefer to work in a stark room because it’s less distracting, or you may want as much personality around you as possible to serve as inspiration. Just remember that if you’re on video calls a lot, you want to consider what’s showing up in the background. Other than that, have fun personalizing your work space! Make it a room you enjoy coming into and spending time in—then reward yourself with a snack from the company kitchen. You know, the one down the hall. READ MORE AT

Embattled turtles may need help to survive modern world By Cheri Caso Special to The Citizen
Spring is here and turtles are emerging from their deep winter freeze. Do you see them? They are trying to cross the roads, they're in the grass, and under that pile of leaves. But they're also in decline.

Turtles From A8
care. She is listed on the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection site as a state-licensed turtle rehabilitator. I met Meier two years ago when I found a painted turtle that was hit in the road and brought it to her. I had no idea about the plight of Connecticut’s native turtles. My eyes were forever opened talking with her. At The Turtle’s Back, there are turtle tanks everywhere along with some large enclosures outside. Each turtle is recovering from being hit by a car, mauled by landscaping equipment or even bitten by dogs who thought they were rocks.
where they were found, usually locating a safe pond or forest in the area using Google maps. She has species healing that some of us may never see in the wild, like spotted and wood turtles. If you find an injured turtle, don’t leave it behind. Take it with you and call or text The Turtle’s Back at 203-9032708 for help. If you feel inclined, you can visit their website, theturtlesback.org, and donate to fund the important work they are doing. It’s a great resource for identifying and helping native turtles.
The Turtle’s Back Facebook page is informative for what’s happening "on the ground" during turtle season. Every case is different, and there’s always something to learn. (facebook.com/theturtlesback). She has a special system of Meier sometimes needs volbinding the turtle’s shell unteer help, which is a great back together so it heals opportunity for young peo– just like our bones do. Injured turtles stay with her for ple with a genuine interest in wildlife who don’t mind at least three months, then hard, sometimes tedious she takes them back to
work. Here are some additional facts to remember if you encounter a turtle: If you see a turtle trying to cross the road, please help it. Be safe and put on your hazard lights. Gently pick it up, keeping it low to the ground to prevent the risk of dropping it. Place it on the side of the road in the direction it is heading. Wait to make sure it keeps going in that direction before you leave. No matter how minor or serious the injury, every injured turtle needs medical help. Turtles have an amazing ability to heal from wounds that would be fatal for most other animals, but wounds that appear small on the outside may not be. And even small cracks in a shell can kill a turtle: flies will lay eggs in the crack and it will die a slow death from a maggot infestation. Keep the turtle protected from flies in transport. Snapping turtles seem scary
but are not difficult to help. They are unable to fully retreat into their shell for protection (unlike most turtles), so being feisty is all they’ve got. Coax the turtle onto a car mat or towel and drag it across the road, or throw a towel, blanket or shirt over the turtle to protect your hands from its claws and pick it up between its front and back legs, holding it down away from your face. Don’t worry, their necks can’t reach that far back. Never pick a snapping turtle up by the tail; you could hurt their spine.
treatment and unnecessary euthanasia. Seek help from a rehabilitator who has extensive turtle experience first; they are capable of handling most issues and will take the animal to a trusted turtle vet, if need be. Never take a turtle from the wild as a pet. Every turtle removed from the wild decreases the chance of their species survival, and it is illegal to keep native wildlife. Wild animals belong in the wild.
Never relocate a turtle. They have homes and need to remain with their breeding If you find a turtle that has been hit by a car and seems populations, and some, like dead, don’t assume it is (un- the Eastern box turtle, will less it’s an old, dried out car- try to find their way back, an incredibly dangerous jourcass). JOE AMARONE
EMILY CHASE
The first week of the spring season saw a number of new coaches making belated debuts, such as Sheehan’s Dom Lombardozzi. On April 12, the Titans got “Lombo” his first win when Joe Amarone doubled and scored in the eighth inning to defeat Cheshire 4-3. Amarone, a senior, went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI that day. In the season-opening loss against Xavier, Amarone was 3-for-4. He and the Titans have gone 3-0 since.
When you take on Lyman Hall in softball, know that the Trojans are going to come after you at the plate and on the basepaths. Emily Chase sets the tone at the top of the order. LH has scored 48 runs in starting 4-1 and Chase, with 12, has a full quarter of them. For good reason: Chase is batting .684. Against Foran on Monday, the junior shortstop reached base five times, scored four runs and lashed three doubles.
SHEEHAN BASEBALL
LYMAN HALL SOFTBALL
EVAN AVERY
BROOKLYN CIVIDANES
MALONEY BASEBALL
PLATT SOFTBALL
We distinctly remember nominating Evan Avery for Athlete of the Week in his sophomore year of baseball. The lost season of 2020 didn’t hurt him any. Avery played a big part in Maloney’s 3-1 start to 2021. He delivered a 2-run single in the opener vs. Bristol Eastern, pitched a complete-game 3-hitter to beat Bristol Central, connected for a 3-run triple at Avon and went 2-for-2 with three stolen bases Saturday vs. Wilcox Tech.
The girl with the big-city name appears to have a big-time game. Brooklyn Cividanes is one of those players you haven’t heard of due to the cancelled 2020 season. You’re hearing about her now. The sophomore shortstop launched her varsity career going 6-for-8 with 3 HR and 10 RBI in wins over Wilcox and Conard. The latter team, after watching Cividanes twice go yard, intentionally walked her the rest of the day.
JACK MCGOVERN
BRIANNA PEARSON
One of the few Wilcox baseball players with previous varsity experience, junior Jack McGovern is doing a little bit of everything to put the Tribe in position to win. Certainly, he’s deserved to win on the mound, pitching well against both Manchester (4-3, no decision) and Maloney (4-2, loss). McGovern went 2-for-2 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI vs. Platt and he was 2-for-2 with a 3-run double and three runs scored vs. Goodwin Tech.
Name it and Brianna Pearson has done it to help Cheshire softball fire out of the gate at 5-0. She’s pitched three 1-hitters. She’s smacked two home runs. In a nutshell, she’s out-producing the entire opposition. Over 29 innings, the senior right-hander has allowed three runs and nine hits while striking out 43. At the plate, Pearson has rapped out 11 hits, including three doubles to go with the two HRs, and driven in 11 runs.

National lawmakers trumpet recent legislative efforts Hayes touts worker protection bills Last week, Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05) voted to pass the two landmark worker protection bills led by members of the Connecticut delegation. The House passed the Paycheck Fairness Act, led by Representative Rosa DeLauro (CT03), and the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act, led by Representative Joe Courtney (CT02). Hayes also advocated for the passage of these bills in an Education and Labor Committee markup last month. “These bills are critical to ensuring workers are protected from discrimination and violence in the workplace,” said Hayes. “As women have dropped out of the workforce in record numbers due to COVID-19, we must do all we can to ensure they are safe and fully compensated as they return. It’s been a while since we last went through the mail together, so I figured we would do so today and take a look at a few notes and emails that came in.
bread recipes came in. I did try most of them. No, I am not anywhere near being an expert, but I think I could possibly get really good at this — with more practice. I got help from Andy and Deborah and Jack and Jackie and a few others.
Not too long ago, I was in a winter breadmaking craze. I cannot tell you how many times I sent the hubby and kid out to get flour and yeast. I also cannot tell you how many phenomenal
Andy wrote after he read the column about breadmaking. His favorite recipe was given to him by a friend. He tried his friend’s suggestion and called the end result, “not a bad loaf of
bread.” Andy did say he altered the instructions a bit, and in fact “made a number of changes to the basic ingredients,” but this is his goto mix. I did try his version. He promised preparation would only take a little over an hour. He was right. He also was correct that the finished product was delicious. I gave my friend Dell a few warm slices. She asked, “What is that weird smell?” (I think I was disappointed to hear that at the time, but now I am cracking up about it.) Deb’s recipe called for beer.

Himmelman recently presented “Butterflies and their Gardens,” via Zoom, at the Southington Public Library. The popular speaker and award-winning author is passionate about butterflies and moths and has led butterfly tours throughout the world. He’s traveled to Tobago in order to see Clearwings, which are also known as Glasswings, named so for their translucent wings. In Trinidad, he traveled to see the two types of Heliconius, a.k.a. longwing butterflies. “The only way to tell them apart is by sniffing them,”

said Himmelman. “One smells like wild rice, the other smells like ginger.” Back in Connecticut, Himmelman told the Zoom audience that April is his favorite time to go butterflying. “We’re not out of the woods yet,” he said regarding the possibility of a late snowfall. “But even in late winter, on a warm afternoon, you can see mourning cloaks, which overwinter here. They tuck themselves under the bark of trees and under the shingles of a house,” he said. “It’s just the most surreal thing to see a butterfly flying over snow.” Other early-season butterflies are red admirals, commas and spring azures. Red admirals overwinter in-state as adults, but the ones that are spotted in Connecticut right now, overwintered in New Jersey and Delaware, said Himmelman. Commas and the question mark can also be seen at this time. They are named for the markings on their hindwings. These butterflies also go by the name of anglewings. “When their wings are closed, they look like dead leaves,” said Himmelman. “That makes sense, since if they are showing up this early, it would behoove them to look like dead leaves, so they blend in with the background.” The spring azure, however, is the definitive sign of spring for Himmelman. The other butterflies overwinter, but this butterfly emerges from its chrysalis. “They can’t go back in when it gets cold,” said Himmelman, adding that when you see them flying around, it is officially spring. A problem at this time of year is that there are not a lot of flowers around. Himmelman showed two pictures of White Admirals feeding on scat, another name for wildlife poop. See Butterflies, A33

“There’s nutrients in there, and salt,” he said. “Horse manure piles are good places to find butterflies, too.” Spicebush swallowtails are out as well. Himmelman said they eat spicebush, the yellow haze of blooms seen in the woods in early spring. By June, it’s the pearl crescent that will be one of the most common butterflies in your yard. It’s not unusual to have two to three generations over the course of a season, said Himmelman. You may also come across the fiery skipper, and the silver spotted skipper. Late season butterflies include the American snout or common snouts, which have elaborately elongated noses.
Butterflies smell with a variety of sensors, and Himmelman noted that butterflies taste with their feet. Butterflies have ingenious tools to avoid predators. Toxicity is one. Butterflies also will have distinct markings or colors to remind predators of their toxicity or to fool them into thinking they are toxic. “Birds learn to stay away from things that don’t taste good or are poisonous,” Himmelman said. Pipeline swallowtails, with their distinctive tail and iridescent blue on the hindwings, are toxic to birds. Spicebush swallowtails mimic the look of the toxic pipeline swallowtail. They benefit from the mimicry. A different type of mimicry is Müllerian mimicry. In the case of a viceroy and monarch butterfly, both look very much alike, and they are both toxic to birds, ex-
plained Himmelman. Another defense is the eyespots and markings. A bird will go for the head, but an eyespot on the hindwings, away from the important parts of the head and thorax, the bird misses, and the butterfly lives to fly another day. “It’s all about not getting eaten and it’s amazing how they go about it,” he said. In order to attract butterflies to your yard, Himmelman suggests having a water puddling source. That could be as simple as a wet area on the ground. A basking rock will allow them to warm up. And planting food and host plants and trees is the best way to attract and keep these pollinators. Native grasses, like bluestem, and dandelions attract skippers, which acquired their name from the way they fly. “They look like they’re skipping over the meadow,” Himmel-
man said. Tulip trees are the host to tiger swallowtail caterpillars and a variety of other butterflies and moths. Monarchs need milkweed. Plant choices are varied and include swamp or common milkweed and the orange butterfly weed. Black-eyed Susans attract all kinds of butterflies.
A33
Additional plant recommendations are purple coneflower, Joe Pye weed, ironweed, asters, zinnias, goldenrod, liatris, anise hyssop and stonecrop. Make sure there is something in bloom throughout the season, early spring to late fall, said Himmelman.

Lamont: COVID funds to be spent on summer education programs By Pat Eaton-Robb Associated Press

Tips to help you survive allergy season By Caitlin Houston Special to the Record-Journal
With spring in full swing, I can't go one day without remembering to protect myself from any prolonged exposure to the outdoors. Wondering why? I'm allergic to quite a bit of what is blooming in nature. This is my first spring with the background knowledge that my headaches, runny nose, and aches and pains are attributed to severe allergies. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, here are some tips for surviving allergy season.
Tip 1 It's hard not to go outside when the
weather is so beautiful during the spring. However, some days it can look like it's snowing pollen. After spending time outside, wash your face/hands and change your clothes. If you see pollen on yourself, take a shower. Pollen will cling to you.
dening. Unfortunately, I am highly allergic to the majority of the weeds that grow in our backyard so I cannot be anywhere near them. My husband has to do all gardening this season, so I compromised to play with the girls while he does it.
Tip 2
Tip 4
Leave nature outside where it belongs. My family never wears outdoor shoes around the house because of everything that you can possibly track inside. Keep your shoes in a designated area, like by the back door, on a rubber mat.
No matter how much you love the smell of fresh air, refrain from opening the windows in your home and car. If you truly cannot resist and you want to open a window for a little bit, make sure it isn't a windy day.
Tip 3
Tip 5
Wear a mask and gloves while gar-
Stay hydrated and gargle with salt
water for a scratchy throat.
Tip 6 Surviving allergy season can be hard. Make sure you consult your doctor if you think you have seasonal allergies. I never knew how many allergens I’m allergic to until I saw a specialist. Don't let allergies ruin your enjoyment of the spring. Caitlin Houston is a Wallingford blogger and mom of two who loves sharing all of her favorites on the Caitlin Houston Blog. rollment in those summer programs and to facilitate a seamless transition back into the classroom for the 202122 school year. State education officials said used data collected through the state’s new attendance tracking system to identify the districts with the greatest need and allocate the LEAP funds to those areas. The state last fall used relief collars to distribute 141,000 laptops and 44,000 at-home internet connections for students in need. U.S. Sen Richard Blumenthal told the roundtable that millions more in education money will be coming to the state in the next few months as part of the Biden Administrations American Rescue Plan and he said local school districts will be able to decide how to spend those funds. “We know that the pandemic has taken an egregious toll, potentially a tragic loss for our students and we have an obligation to do everything we can to overcome it,” he said.
