Even though school is out, the district’s school resource officers are finding ways to stay engaged with students.

Officers Gretchen Ovesny and David Maliar have been in touch via social media, particularly videos posted to their Facebook page.

The spring postseason typically spans the first two weeks of June. By scrapping the state championship events, the CIAC is freeing up competition time for as many teams and athletes as possible, rather than giving the lion’s share to the elite few who advance through the tournament brackets.

“There was no feasibility, from our perspective, to holding statewide events,” said Joel Cookson, the CIAC’s Director of Media & Sports Information. “This allows, if there is competition and it’s deemed safe, teams to play some of their local rivals and to get in those experiences in the time frame that ends up being allowed.”

In keeping the spring sports window open, Connecticut is in the minority nationwide — ironic given that the CIAC was among the first to pull the plug on the winter postseason as the severity of the pandemic became apparent in mid-March. In Brief Club making, selling masks The Suburban Garden Club of Cheshire has been making and selling face masks used for protection against COVID-19. Club member Susan Dillman initially had purchased materials and began sewing face masks as her donation for Yale-New Haven Hospital when the idea to sell some locally and contribute the proceeds to the Cheshire Food Pantry developed. The requests for masks increased quickly and Dillman asked club members for help. Currently, some club members are cutting the material, others are sewing, and another group is putting the finishing touches on the masks. All the materials have been donated by club members. The face masks can be found for purchase at Main Street Cafe and Cheshire Nursery. All proceeds will be donated to the food pantry.

“We’ve gotten incredibly positive feedback from the community in general,” Maliar said. “To know that we’re out here and we still care is a bigger message than the words we’re actually reading.”

Normally, Ovesny has an office in the high school and Maliar is set up at Dodd Middle School, but they visit other schools as well. Both said they strive to make the offices “safe zones” for students to be themselves.

Maliar is usually at Dodd on food distribution days, and they both make rounds to the schools to check the buildings.

On April 15, the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, as part of its ongoing commitment to the greater Cheshire Community, awarded Educational Assistance Grants in the amount of $1,000 each to Cheshire High School seniors Ruth DelVecchio and Kaylee Fell.

Jing Fan introduced everyone to Spot, his goldfish, by way of his phone camera.

Fan explained Spot has a penchant for burying his head in the sand. As for Fan’s diet, “We feed him grass and fish food,” said Fan. By way, don’t worry about Spot being a lonely fish. Fan explained Spot lives with three other goldfish, as he pulled up a picture of three smiling goldfish faces looking up from the phone screen.

“I feel the state is in a dire situation right now financially, even before the virus,” Suzio said.

Suzio, who staunchly opposed former Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy’s policies, continued the criticism toward current Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont’s efforts to implement tolls to bolster the state’s transporation fund. He attributed the dec-

sion by a number of lawmakers not to run for reelection to the polarizing toll debate.

Suzio also disagreed with Lamont’s partnership with the governors of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Rhode Island and Massachusetts on a regional approach to reopening the Northeast.

“I don’t like the idea of what happens in our state being dependent on what happens in New York,” Suzio said. “It’s a much bigger

state, very different than what’s going to happen in Connecticut. The governor is the highest executive in the state. He’s got to make decisions based on what’s happening in Connecticut not in New York. He has to open our economy based on our unique set of circumstances.”

Suzio wants to see a gradual opening in areas such as Windham and Litchfield counties that have low populations of infected residents while closely watching for infection spikes. Critics of

reopening one area of the region before the pandemic is under control say the action will draw people from other areas who could spread the virus.

Suzio said the current crisis will deplete the state’s $2.5 billion rainy day fund and restoring fiscal balance takes a bi-partisan legislature and a long-term plan. Other challenges to recovery are a $400 million projected shortfall in collected revenues and a projected $178 million deficit prior to the pandemic.

Suzio earned his bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

He founded GeoDataVision, a bank consulting company focusing on federal regulations and was director, executive VP and senior loan officer for American National Bank in Hamden. In addition to being a fiscal conservative, Suzio is also a social conservative and frequently takes aim at prochoice Planned Parenthood funding, while rejecting gun control and had strong opinions against legalizing recreational marijuana in 2018.

Suzio introduced an effort to privatize social services through partnerships with the state and worked to eliminate the state’s Risk Reduction Earned Credit program, which allows for the early release of convicted criminals.

Democrats have typically run candidates with views in stark contrast to Suzio’s fiscal and social policies, such as Bartolomeo and Abrams, a former special education teacher and administrator.

“Len Suzio has run for state Senate more times than I care to count,” Meriden Democratic Town Chairwoman Millie Torres-Ferguson said. “I’m not surprised he wants to run again but I am surprised the Republican party continues to endorse him.
