States where decisions have yet to be made include Maryland, Montana, New Jersey and Wyoming.

The Democratic governor first ordered schools closed seven weeks ago after most district leaders had already decided to close their doors.

When it became apparent that it was not safe to reconvene schools, the governor in early April extended his school closure order through May 20.

Talk Saves Lives The Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Healthy Community Coalition will present "Talk Saves Lives: An introduction to suicide prevention facilitated by The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Connecticut Chapter."

This introductory course will provide basic information about suicide and mental health. The class will educate participants on warning signs and preventative measures to help those dealing with suicidal thoughts.

Memorial scholarship Pvt. Lester Rochford VFW Post 10052 of Cheshire has selected two Cheshire High School seniors as winners in this year’s essay contest for the Henry E. “Hank” Carson Memorial Scholarship.

The subject of the essay was “What American Citizenship Means to Me.” There were 15 entries submitted for the contest, which features two scholarships—$1,000 for first place and $500 for second.

The first place award goes to Sam Hanke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Hanke. The second place award goes to Meredith Carson, daughter of Scott Carson and Terri Davison, and stepdaughter of Ken Davison. The students received their awards directly from the VFW Post because the annual CHS Awards Convocation was canceled.

Club making, selling masks

COVID-19. Club member Susan Dillman initially had purchased materials and began sewing face masks as her donation for Yale-New Haven Hospital when the idea to sell some locally and contribute the proceeds to the Cheshire Food Pantry developed. The requests for masks increased quickly and Dillman asked club members for help. Currently, some club members are cutting the material, others are sewing, and another group is putting the finishing touches on the masks. All the materials have been donated by club members. The face masks can be found for purchase at Main Street Cafe and Cheshire Nursery. All proceeds will be donated to the food pantry.

Spike in COVID-19 cases, deaths raises concern

Limited reopening gets mixed reviews from restaurant owners

Elim Park in Cheshire reported 31 cases and five deaths and The Summit at Plantsville in Southington re-

ported 35 cases, seven deaths and one probable death.

Montowese Health & Rehab Center in North Haven reported 48 positive residents, eight deaths and one probable death, while LedgeCrest Health Care in Berlin had 29 cases, one death and one probable death.

At local assisted living facilities, Elim Park Baptist Home in Cheshire reported 27 cases and no deaths and Masonicare Health Care Pond Ridge at Ashlar Village had one patient, according to the state data. That number varies from previous Masonicare announcements, in which multiple cases and at least one death were reported.

Tracking system The state is also ramping up its testing, particularly for front line workers, and hopes to have the capacity to perform 50,000 tests per week by the end of May, according to Gov. Ned Lamont.

It is also implementing a tracking system that will utilize test results and Microsoft software to make contact with others who may be infected. Even persons showing no symptoms would be tested.

“That would have been incredibly helpful in nursing homes to have,” Lamont said at a recent press conference.

Meriden and many other health departments and districts have offered to assist DPH in testing the new statewide contact tracing initiative called "contaCT,” Crown said. A launch date has not been set, but training could begin this week. The state hopes to have 300 volunteers for the tracking and is seeking an additional 300 to 500 volunteers enrolled in pubic health and social service programs at local universities.

With only room for a few tables on the sidewalk outside the restaurant, Moran said it’d be hard to make back the money it takes to restock the kitchen and bring back staff. She said the plan was a gesture from the governor toward reopening, but probably won’t be used by many businesses.

“Let’s get to the point where we can do limited capacity inside, because that’s going to be hard enough,” Moran said.

Anthony Jack’s, which has been operating, may do outdoor dining, although Moran hasn’t yet made that decision.

Up to the customers Town economic leaders said reopening ultimately depends on whether residents feel safe going out to eat.

Business owners have to contend with unknown demand and fickle weather in reopening outdoor dining, according to Lou Perillo, the town’s economic development coordinator.

Barbara Hekeler-Coleman, Southington Chamber of Commerce president, said she’s been impressed with the measures restaurants have taken to ensure safety with takeout and delivery.

Outdoor dining may be a way to restore customers’ confidence.

“What is the mindset of our consumers? Are people going to be receptive of coming and patronizing (businesses)?” she said. “Outside dining is a good way to test that in general.”

With Connecticut restaurants still only offering takeout, eateries have begun to adapt. For some restaurants, that means selling bottles of wine or to-go alcoholic drinks, for others it’s offering cooking kits to take home.

One popular kit has been do-it-yourself pizza, which comes with uncooked dough, sauce and cheese.

At Pop’s Pizza in Cheshire, the kit isn’t new. Owner Pete DeBisschop has been offering them for more than 30 years.

“We’ve been doing them for a very, very long time,” DeBisschop said.

He said one of the first weekends after the coronavirus closures they sold around 400 kits. Since then the demand has slowed.

In March, Pop’s started a social media “challenge,” encouraging people to post videos and photos of their pizza-making experience.

“We just thought it was something fun to do,” DeBisschop said.

Keep your space and save a space Now, don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against hikers, but they should realize that they are not above the law, especially in these trying times.

Lake Beseck and Silver Lake seemed to be in control of the boaters and fishermen, and the parking lots there were jam packed with boats and fishermen.

The lot of I-691 above Guida’s hot dog and ice cream stand was filled to overflowing with parked vehicles. I saw groups of more than five walking closely together. It did not look like “social distancing” to me.

Just about all of the fishermen I have observed since the official opening of fishing season have had no trouble practicing social distancing, so I think that it is rather unfair for hikers to prevent fishermen and boaters from gaining access to the boat launch areas because hikers have taken all of the parking spots, especially in confined areas like Black Pond.

Granted, this particular Saturday was a beautiful day to be out and about, but this does not mean that we have to forget about social distancing, and as the weather gets warmer, crowding is going to be even more prevalent.

If those limitations on large gatherings continue, the district will assess whether to hold a virtual remote graduation for its students, or an in-person graduation with social distancing measures in place.

Ideas include, a cap and gown procession through Hubbard Park using cars or social distancing.

her family and her home.

“Nana,” as she was known, was absolutely devoted to her children and grandchildren. She and “Papa” (Bill) traveled all over Connecticut to attend their school, sporting, cultural, and scouting events, always beaming with love and pride at their achievements. She loved to cook and entertain family and friends at the holidays by preparing traditional meals and setting the dining room table with her best linens, china, and finery. Friday nights, however, were reserved for takeout pizza-a family tradition enjoyed by her children and grandchildren. Elaine also cherished her many friends, establishing a “Bridge Group” in high school that lasted for decades. For years, Elaine crafted eye-catching table and window displays at the former Magnolia Shoppe in Cheshire, CT, to share her love of antiques.

Boy, did she have great taste in everything! She loved reading about current events and trends: national, local news, home decorating, and fashion.

On weekends, Elaine loved to go shopping at the Westfarms Mall and out to lunch or tea with her daughters and granddaughters.

Her talent for hand crafting cards for every occasion was exceptional. One was considered very lucky to receive one of her creations! She enjoyed attending productions at the Goodspeed Opera House, concerts at the old Oakdale Musical Theater

in Wallingford, CT, and loved listening to the music of Johnny Mathis.

The screened porch at Elaine and Bill’s former home in Cheshire was their summer sanctuary.

Elaine served seasonal meals every day out there and then would enjoy a well-deserved sit with a good book on her chaise lounge. She was always ahead of her time, especially in the world of fitness. Throughout the years she worked out, first at home to Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda, and then multiple times a week at her local gym. Together with her husband, she loved taking walks on the Linear Path in Cheshire/Hamden and enjoyed taking vacations across New England, the Caribbean, and Europe.

For years, Elaine and Bill packed up the family and soaked up the sun on the beaches of Cape Cod and Kennebunkport, ME. They also enjoyed a special 50th anniversary trip to Europe, where they rode the Orient Express between London and Paris and toured Oxford University. Elaine enjoyed a life full of love for her home, children, grandchildren, neighbors, and friends.

The family would like to thank the nurses, aides, hospice team of Stonebrook Village, Windsor Locks, CT, that so lovingly cared for Elaine. They went above and beyond the call of duty. Online condolences please visit: www.
