CHS seniors advance to Eagle Scout
CENTENARIAN CELEBRATION
Ethan Lin, Ryan Camp and Nickolas Veltri of Cheshire’s Boy Scout Troop 198 received their Eagle Scout Rank at a triple Eagle Court of Honor held May 7 at the Cheshire Youth Center. Each year, less than 9 percent of Boy Scouts attain Eagle Scout status. To earn the rank, scouts are required to fulfill requirements in the areas of leadership, community service and outdoor skills. Lin, Camp and Veltri — seniors at Cheshire High School — have been active in Boy Scouts for over 10 years and have held a variety of positions in Troop 198. To earn the See Scouts, A25

Since my hubby has declared my birthday celebration legally includes not just the day of my birthday, but encompasses the Mother’s Day-Birthday fortnight, I begin my plant-buying early. That’s what I do. I buy plants. If the plant is lucky, it also gets planted soon after purchase. Nevermind that carcasses of birthday plants past that you may spot here and there in the yard.

I am coming off a whirlwind birthday weekend. It’s been fun! It’s also been insanely hot. This is where I tell you I lived in Arizona for a time and when people would say, “Yeah, it’s hot, but there’s no humidity,” we would roll our eyes. Hot is hot. Here in Cheshire, the outdoor thermometer at my house read 96 degrees at noon Sunday. “Alexa” said it was 91. The National Weather Service said it was 87 degrees. It was stifling.

He laughs and tells me I am gullible. I smudge away. I smudge the whole house, top to bottom, blowing smoke into every corner, nook and cranny. When I’m finished, the hubby comes up waving a Powerball ticket in the air and wearing a big smile. “I just won $14!” he said. Hmmm. I relight the smudge stick and commence to smudging again.

Today, I took the lighter from our grill, set the sage alight and watched as it began to smoke. It smells good. The hubby seems worried. “Do we have ghosts?” he asked. It’s a legit question, since, why yes, I do watch those shows. I reassure him that, no, we don’t have ghosts; and no, we don’t have to sell the house. I explain the purpose is to bring good luck into the house.

when all is said and done.
instance, we know that the Town is moving forward with its two-elementary school plan, which will include two new buildings in the north and south ends of Cheshire. What those facilities are expected to look like, however, remains somewhat of a mystery, as no renderings or schematics have been created to show to the public.
There was also a suggestion that examples of recent school construction in other communities could be shown to the public to give people a real-world idea of what Cheshire is striving for with its new buildings. That would seem to be a worthwhile endeavor, as it would again give people a true understanding of what to expect.
At a recent meeting between members of the Board of Education and Town Council, a discussion was had as to how best to market the project to the general public. After all, members of the Council and BOE can believe school modernization is vital, but if the majority of voters who turn out to polling stations in November disagree, it won’t much matter.
Yet, there’s another important aspect to all of this — public involvement. The Town needs to show, in detail, what it is taxpayers will be asked to fund in the coming years, but the taxpayers also need to show up at meetings, contact local representatives, and be more involved in the coming weeks.
It appears a Building Commission will soon be formed by the Town and that schematics will be developed to show people exactly what kind of bang they can expect for their buck. We hope the schematics/renderings are detailed, so that residents are provided as accurate a view of what this project hopes to accomplish
This is a horse that is beaten to death every year, whether it be in lead-up to the passage of the budget or come Election Day. projects that will come with the support needed to get them done. This will be the most expensive proposal ever put forward to the community. Phase One is, by very definition, only the beginning, as the Town will need to address all of its remaining schools in the years to come. Something this big requires all hands on deck, and while there’s been some interaction between the public and the governing bodies making these decisions, much more is required.
We’ve seen members of the public pack Town Hall in recent memory, whether it was for issues pertaining to bullying in schools or proposed subdivisions in Cheshire neighborhoods. The more people who express their viewpoint in lead-up to November, the better. Obviously, the ultimate decision will come at referendum when the votes are finally cast. Only then will we get a full picture of what people truly want. But until then, the public needs to get more involved in these discussions.

COMMENTARY
For veterans, every day is Memorial Day
Fast forward to Memorial Day 2022. The familiar voices of brothers in arms begin to call one another on the phone. People usually think
The Greatest Generation understood war. At home they experienced rationing, schoolchildren collected scrap, and women took up factory jobs, while overseas troops endured combat and were witness to some of the most brutal atrocities in the modern age. When the war was over, the shared sacrifice of a generation united them and helped them solve tough problems. In subsequent wars, such as Korea and Vietnam, veterans did not experience the same
level of understanding and thus turned their voice inward or used it to fight for one another regarding Agent Orange, PTSD, and other once-silent conditions. When it comes to the War on Terror, while only 1 percent of Americans served post 9/11, it seems 100 percent of the country used their voice to express opinions as this shared history unfolded. For Korea and Vietnam veterans, war was not a shared experience. Therefore, various voices helped further the national conversation regarding the treatment of veterans, leading to safer and more thoughtful approaches. See Memorial Day, A27

Memorial Day From A7
Unlike the veterans of Korea and Vietnam, the veterans of the last several decades did not return home to voices of dissent that could be addressed directly. This new era of media, learning, and personal discussions bring rise to the question: Do people really remember why we hold our veterans in a place of honor? For years, voices saying meaningless phrases like “the enemy gets a vote” or “there’s nothing you could have done” were meant to comfort those who have held the heavy responsibility of leading troops in combat. However, many people seem to lack the understanding that our hearts have been forever scarred by the invisi-
ble wounds of war, scarred by guilt and grief, and by the longing for forgiveness that will never come. Even if forgiveness was offered, it would be hard to accept, as no mere words can undo a life experience. And because of this, we often feel isolated, misunderstood, and undervalued. Therefore, our voices remain silent. As conversations with the voice on the other end of the phone come to their inevitable conclusion, I am reminded that to remain silent is a betrayal of my obligation to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. As we gather as one nation this Memorial Day, my hope is that instead of directing shallow words of gratitude at each other, we do as Lt. Gen. Truscott did and direct our

Dear Valued Patient, After practicing medical optometry in the Cheshire, Waterbury greater area for the last 34 years, I am ambivalent to inform that I will be moving to New Hampshire by the end of June 2022. I will continue to practice full time and am fortunate enough to remain with the same company, MyEyeDr. I would like to personally thank you for your trust and giving me the opportunity to assist with your eye health care as well as optical needs over the years. Your eye-care is important to me and I urge you to continue with the eye-care plans we have created together. The Cheshire office will continue under the exceptional care you’ve come to expect with my esteemed and long-term colleague, Dr. Mara Capuano. As you know, she has an impeccable reputation as a trusted caring eye-care provider. Dr. Harvard Sylvan will also continue to see patients and provide them with high level of care that he is revered for. They will be joined by Dr. Alfredo Mesiti and Dr. Jeremy Saxton who will continue in Cheshire’s great tradition of meeting all of your eye health and visual needs.

But for myself, after losing three former soldiers to suicide in the past few months, silence is no longer an option and the freedom to use our voice is the greatest gift that our veterans have to offer this Memorial Day.
Joseph Reagan is the Director of Military and Veterans Outreach for Wreaths Across America. He served eight years on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Army, including two tours to Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Division. He is the recipient of multiple awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
Most sincerely,

It’s often said that for those who have served “every day is Memorial Day”; a traditionally silent observance in the veteran’s mind.
Usually, a moment of silence on this day is a welcomed and solemn way to honor the voices from our past.
I wish you the absolute best of health and happiness. Thank you, once again, for the opportunity to be your optometrist.

top. A filter prevents most solids from entering the outlet pipe, while effluent flows to a leaching field, a large area where bacteria can thrive and treated water can seep into the ground. “The primary objective in laying out a distribution system to any leaching system is to verify that all portions of the leaching system are utilized before an overflow condition occurs resulting in a failure,” said Esposito. Homeowners with septic tanks are advised to be aware of how much water they’re putting into their septic system and to conserve whenever possible. You can combine loads of laundry, run your dishwasher only when full, or take shorter showers.

Officials review requests for funds

MERIDEN — The city has so far received more than $36.58 million in requests to fund projects with COVID-19 relief funds made available through the American Rescue Plan Act. That total already surpasses the close to $36.36 million in funding the city is scheduled to receive through the federal program. The more than three dozen funding applications that have been submitted to date include several requests from city departments for infrastructure repair and upgrades.

Septic upkeep back laundry loads that use bleach, and don’t use more bleach than necessary. Often-asked questions from homeowners about septic tanks: How often should you clean out the system? The Connecticut Department of Public Health recommends household septic tanks be pumped out every 3 to 5 years. Pumping removes the buildup of sludge and scum, which slows down bacterial action in the tank. A tank may be pumped more frequently if you use a garbage disposal, or have a large family or undersized septic tank. Failure to pump a septic tank on a regular schedule may result in an excessive buildup of solids inside the tank. What are signs of a full tank? Sluggish drains are an early indicator of a septic issue, along with standing water on the ground over the septic tank, bad smells from the yard, or gurgling water sounds.
Do chemicals affect septic systems? To make sure your septic system works best, keep a close eye on what you pour down the drain. Never treat your toilet or sinks like a garbage can. Avoid depositing harsh chemicals such as bleach, paint thinners or pesticides into the septic system; they can destroy bacteria that works to keep the system functioning properly. Is the yard over leach lines safe to play on? Children and pets can run and play safely on the land above the drain field. Bicycles are also acceptable because they are not heavy enough to compress or disturb the soil. However, leaching areas should be kept free of structures like decks, detached garages, sheds, and aboveand in-ground swimming pools. For more information, contact the Chesprocott Health District at 203-272-2761 or visit chesprocott.org
Welcome to On The Menu.
Are towelettes and tampons safe for the septic system? No. Never flush inorganic materials, such as feminine hygiene products, kitty litter, cigarette butts, or paper towels. They clog septic tanks with non-biodegradable solids.

BOBBY HERZMAN
EMILY CHASE
The R-J doesn’t pick All-Rookie teams. If we did, our first-round selection would be Robert Herzman, freshman, Wilcox Tech. Herzman was a consistent contributor at the plate and on the mound for the Wildcats in their 15-5 regular season, which has them at No. 6 in the Class L playoff rankings. Herzman closed the season going 2-for-3 vs. Bullard-Havens and 3-for-6 with a single, double and triple vs. Windham Tech.
Senior shortstop Emily Chase just wrapped up an exceptional four-year softball career with the Lyman Hall Trojans. With three hits in her final game, a 9-8 Senior Day win over Branford, Chase finished her final season with a .439 batting average and .513 on-base percentage. The leadoff hitter also stole 17 bases. Chase has been named to the All-SCC First Team. She was also All-SCC First Team in cross country.
RYAN KILLEEN
ALEX ORLINS
Maloney senior right-hander Ryan Killeen thrust himself upon the Athlete of the Week stage with Monday’s 1-0 shutout of Platt in the regular-season finale at Ceppa Field. Matched up with unbeaten Platt ace Brandon Cahill, who held the Spartans to two hits, Killeen persevered with a 3-hitter in which he fanned nine, walked three and didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning. Killeen also drew a walk and scored the game’s lone run.
While the upcoming state tournaments will decide the final story, Cheshire’s Alex Orlins holds the inside track for Record-Journal Girls Tennis Player of the Year. And she’s only a freshman. Holding down No. 1 singles for the Rams, Orlins won all of her matches during the regular season, often in dominating fashion. And while Cheshire lost to North Haven in the SCC quarterfinals, Orlins won her match that day 6-1, 6-0.
ANTWONE SANTIAGO
SAM SULLIVAN
This week’s AOTW selections were made prior to Tuesday’s CCC South championship track meet, so there’s no telling what Antwone Santiago did there. We just know what he did in the Maloney-Platt rivalry meet. Making a claim for being the area’s top male athlete, the All-State football player won the shot put at 47 feet, 7 inches and, in his first attempt in the event, broke a 59-year-old Platt record in the long jump at 23 feet.
There’s a photo Aaron Flaum took this season of Sam Sullivan swinging a bat that Ted Williams would admire. Simply textbook lefty. The late Joan Joyce, who famously fanned Williams, would probably admire Sullivan’s work in the circle. SHS capped the regular season Monday with a 4-0 shutout of Hall in which Sullivan threw the first 3 innings of a no-hitter and went 2-for-3 at the plate. A typical day in the softball life of Sam Sullivan.
