Memorial Day events are set for May 30

AFTER THE STORM

The following Memorial Day events are scheduled for Sunday, May 30. Cheshire’s annual Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony honoring the men and women in America’s armed forces who died will be held on the First Congregational Church green Sunday, May 30 at 1 p.m. The motorcade follows this event. The ceremony is sponsored by the Cheshire Veterans Council, which consists of American Legion Post 92, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10052, Army Air Force Roundtable of Connecticut, Disabled American Veterans, and AmVets, and is cosponsored by the Town of Cheshire. The Cheshire Memorial Day Parade Committee recently announced that the 2021 Memorial Day Parade will unfold as a motorcade, specifically for veterans – and be spread out to area neighborhoods, essentially bringing the parade to residents instead of bringing residents out to the parade.

Cheshire Fire Department Captain Brian Owen, at Station 3, 1125 South Main St., snapped this photo of a double rainbow. Owen took the picture Monday afternoon, May 17, just after a thunderstorm passed through.

CHS, Cheshire Academy announce graduation plans Record-Journal staff

Both local high schools plan in-person graduation ceremonies, joining many area districts in finding a way to proceed and still adhere to pandemic protocols. Cheshire High School and Cheshire Academy recently released their graduation schedules and health safety guidelines.

At the May 20 Board of Education meeting, Superintendent of Schools Jeff Solan announced graduation will be held in person on June 16 at 6 p.m. on the school’s football field. Meriden, Wallingford and Southington schools also plan graduation ceremonies on their high school football fields. Wilcox Technical High School will be breaking their outdoor ceremony into three cohorts.

THE BEES ARE BACK!

Solan said the decision to move forward with an inperson event was made in consultation with the Chesprocott Health District. In a May 21 press release, Cheshire Academy announced its plans to hold an in-person commencement ceremony June 5. See Graduation, A2

On May 30, beginning at 1:30 p.m., a motorcade of veterans and their families will leave from First Congregational Church and make its way throughout town. This year’s motorcade will pass through several neighborhoods, giving people ample opportunity to come out and wave, cheer, and honor both the veterans taking part and all those who have lost their lives in service of the country.

Local veterans from all military branches are included in this special motorcade. Parade organizers request all residents to place American flags on their houses or in their yards and come out to honor veterans as they pass by. Most cars will have the names of the veterans or veteran organizations on the sides of the cars.

Right in your neighborhood.

The Cheshire Veterans Council also asks for residents to use this time to teach the children in attendance to place their hands over their hearts and take off their hats or caps and to provide context to the event, explaining that it is held to remember and honor those who sacrificed their lives in service to our country. twenty Organizers would like residents to continue to consider social distancing and not congregate in mass gatherings along the route, in deference to the pandemic, which is still affecting many in our state and in our town.

Conservation project enhances canal trail Each year high school students from numerous towns in Connecticut are invited to take part in Conservation Training Partnerships, a one-of-a-kind program offered by UConn.

This year, Cheshire High School students Julianna Distante, Aishwarya Benzy and Isabella DelRosso participated in the program. The students recently finished their CTP project, creating an online reference tool of natural resources along different stops on the

One objective of the team was to get kids from the community outside. Lewoc said the group wanted a chance for trail walkers, young families especially, to notice the world around them and to learn about it. “A lot of times people are outdoors getting exercise and yet they don’t know

what is in their own backyards,” he said. The team felt the project would address that issue. Thought was also given to the fact that so many people were stuck inside virtual learning and working due to the pandemic. See Project, A6

“The group wanted to do something fun for kids, maybe like a virtual scavenger hunt,” Lewoc said, adding that the mission, with the help of NRCA, would educate and engage the community in nature. Conservation Training Partnerships is administered via UConn faculty from the school’s Department of Natural Resources & the Environment, Center for Land Use Education & Research (CLEAR) and Neag School of Education.

the form of a two-day, hands-on digital technology workshop. It also includes time outside “in the field” to utilize the newly learned technology. Professors assist in the workshops and offer support to the newly-formed teams and facilitate choices and focus of projects. Projects can be completed in a few months, after which students work on videos, posters or storymaps. Their efforts culminate in presentations at one of two choices of in-state conservation conferences the following spring.

involvement early on. She said the interaction would be one way to get young people involved in SGC. The idea of addressing environmental issues also spoke to her. McGeary then tapped Lewoc, who could help with the tech aspects of the project. Hanlon was the last piece of the puzzle added to the group’s team of mentors. “Katy is so knowledgeable,” said McGeary, of Hanlon’s expertise as a master gardener. “I am ever so grateful to her.” Finally, Lewoc recruited CHS students Distante, Benzy and DelRosso, now seniors who will graduate this spring. CTP Program Coordinator Nicole Freidenfelds presents to schools and organizations around the state, spreading the word about the program. “I really enjoy my role as CTP program coordinator because I get to connect high school students and adult volun-

When assessing the number of participants in the Cheshire side of the project, Freidenfelds was unsure how such a large group would work. “We had never had a six-person team before. But they were a wonderful group to work with — very enthusiastic and genuinely interested in doing something positive for their community,” she said.

Students have been working with the town and are still working on a signage concept, which would incorporate the QR code. Additionally, students are working with a fundraising portal through Sustainable CT, which also has a community match fund.

Due to COVID, the CTP program went virtual. However, McGeary and her group were able to meet outdoors in late summer 2020. “It was brutally hot,” said McGeary. The group walked the trail and chose three stops to highlight within an approximate two-mile stretch. One stop is the Cheshire West Community Butterfly Garden. Another is the platform overlook past Pop’s Pizza, heading east. The students also incorporated a 360-degree camera into the project with the help of Lewoc. The goal was to develop educational material that people walking the trail could access. McGeary explained that a QR code would be de-

Another facet of the project is the collaboration with the Cheshire Public Library. McGeary said the group calls itself the Cheshire Conservation Connection. One of the students came up with a logo for the partnership and the group is working with the library to creating a Cheshire Conservation Connection “nook” with environmental books on display to loan. The project is still a work in progress. “The fact that they (the students) are learning what you can do, and at a young age, they have made a difference. They have made something happen. It’s a wonderful thing,” she said. The work to build on the project, the website informaSee Project, A7

Sunflower ‘selfies’ just part of fun townwide planting project By Joy VandeLek The Cheshire Citizen

Cheshire’s Summer of Sunflowers’ mission is straightforward. Beginning as just a seed of an idea, the project was planted with the intention to become a town-wide, cheerful “community growing project,” according to the Coalition for a Sustainable Cheshire. The past year has been tough, specifically with respect to the isolation people experienced due to the pandemic, said Fiona Pearson, co-chair of Sustainable Cheshire. Now organizers say they hope residents get involved and plant a sunflower or two in their yards or even in a pot. Seeds for the project were made available by Cheshire West Butterfly Gardens’ Jennifer Reynolds and Gary Richards. The seeds were packaged and given out free of charge at a number of local businesses.

The Cheshire Public Libary recently hosted a program on how to grow sunflowers and library director Beth Crowley says the library has seeds available for those interested in being a part of the town-wide project. There’s even a chance for participants to share their success and to submit a sunflower “selfie” and to see how others around town have created their displays. Sunflower selfies can

in to get as many residents as possible to plant sunflowers this summer. “It’s a way to get everyone outdoors again and lift spirits,” said Pearson. “It’s the perfect way to reconnect with our Cheshire neighbors.” To help launch the Summer of Sunflowers, the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library hosted a kick-off program on May 20 with Cheshire Polli-

The presentation addressed the importance of supporting pollinators with simple, sustainable gardening practices. This includes shrinking the lawn, including more native plantings, keeping a “wild area” in your yard, and forgoing pesticides. Giddings found tick levels dropped dramatically as native plantings brought in birds and other wildlife that apparently helped take care of the ticks and other pests.

HOW CAN I DE-CLUTTER FOR SPRING?

Warm weather is here! With the fresh start of the spring season, many Connecticut homeowners are getting ready for spring cleaning and the deep sense of accomplishment it inevitably brings—and that includes us at Calcagni Real Estate. But after a year spent at home (all…the…time…), many of us are discovering the need to declutter before we deep clean. If you’re looking around your house feeling a little overwhelmed at where to start, you’re not alone. Keep reading for easy-to-overcome tips and tricks that will leave you feeling accomplished and clutter-free in no time.

This first method Kuper recommends is probably one you’ve employed before: Simply grab one garbage bag and move your way around the house, filling it with items that haven’t yet made it to the trash (or recycling), but should. This is a great way to do a “sweep” —a generalized first step toward decluttering. Once you clear your home of items that you really no longer need, you can start to see other items in your home that may be taking up precious space or creating low-level stress in your dayto-day existence.

Fridge magnets, a window to my soul? By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

Some years ago, I wrote a story on bumper stickers and to this day I will go out of my way to read what people put on their cars. I don’t care if I have to shimmy between bumpers and curbing at the Big Y grocery store parking lot or dodge vehicles on a busy Friday night pizza pickup at Vespucci’s Restaurant. The hunt is really worth it. I find some real gems. No doubt you have seen those windshields announcing the vehicle owners as dog people, or a soccer mom who drives this 15-passenger SUV, or a sticker that tells us this proud couple are pet parents to cuddly Labradoodles. When I was recently at Roaring Brook Falls, I saw what I think was a retaliatory statement made against those popular stick figure people. The montage certainly came across as snarky. The picture was of the Star Wars All Terrain Armored Transport and it showed a family (all sticks) fleeing from the assault vehicle. The sticker read, “The Empire doesn’t care about your stick figure family.” Another sticker spotted during a day at the park simply stated, “Her race car.” I love that one. Below it was a “thumbs up” sticker proclaiming the following: “Made you look.” I like bumper stickers so much I have one, not on my car, but affixed to my desk. It says, “No farms, No food.” I have another that says, “Make America Green Again.”

There’s also a mirror on the fridge. Previously the mirror served time in a child’s locker for a few years. The thing is a wild gaudy purple with its own rainbow, smiley face, and heart stickers.

You really can’t see yourself in the mirror as it’s pretty scratched up. However, the magnet attached to the backside of the mirror is so strong, nobody has been able to pull it off. So, it stays. My fridge also has a magnet in the shape of a measuring cup displaying information on the equivalents for wet/dry

There are also photos of the kid from every year of school. Did you know that some cultures think photos capture your soul? That’s why I can’t throw these away. You think I want that hanging on my head. No way. So now I have looked at this kid, impeccably dressed in crisp, white christening

clothes with a grumpy, fixed stone face, for what seems to be eons. Another photo was taken at a now long-gone daycare on Realty Drive. The kid is reclining on a chaise lounge with a head of wild hair. The photographer obviously took that one after the kids’ recess or possibly even at the very end of the day. Don’t photographers bring along combs? And by the way, who thinks it’s “natural” for a child to recline in a chaise lounge? Contact me at jvanderlek@ record-journal.com.

The world has changed. Our reputation hasn’t. Ask about the additional measures we have in place to keep you safe during your stay with us.

As much as I love bumper stickers, my interest now seems to have spread to refrigerators magnets. On my fridge, I have loads of positive statements, such as: “There are people who will always come up with reasons why you can’t do what you want to do. Ignore them.” That is perfectly me. Sandra Boynton, an artist and author who specializes in cute animal drawings, has earned a lot of space here with her magnets. Currently, the singing

pig, chicken and dancing cow magnets have sizable real estate on the one side of the fridge.

measurements. How wonderful to know how many tablespoons equal a quart (65), or how many ounces make a gallon (that would be 128). You would think this would be handy. Instead, I have not looked at that thing — well, not counting right now — I have not looked at it since I put the measuring magnet on the fridge.

MACKENZIE GRADY

Wilcox wrapped up the CTC Nutmeg Division golf crown at 8-0 with victories over Kaynor Tech and Wolcott Tech. In each match, Cole Maluszewski earned the medal for the Tribe. The senior shot a 5-over-par 40 at Hunter Golf Course against Kaynor and a 7-over 43 at Torrington Country Club against Wolcott Tech. In between, Maluszewski shared the medal with teammate Colin Fletcher with a 42 at Hunter against Grasso Tech.

We know all about Mackenzie Grady’s acumen in volleyball. She’s twice been All-RJ and All-SCC in that sport. This spring, the junior is staking a claim for herself in track. With a season-best throw of 103 feet, 6 inches last Tuesday, Grady won the SCC East Sectional crown in the javelin. That 103-6 also happens to be the longest girls javelin throw so far in all of Class L, the state meet Grady and LH will be competing in next week.

MARQUIS WARD

MADELYN NAPIERSKI

Here’s a name were going to be talking about in track for the next four years. In fact, we’re talking about him right now. Maloney’s Marquis Ward, only a freshman, has already established himself as a standout sprinter and jumper. Ward swept the 100, 200 and long jump in Friday’s Platt-Maloney meet. Heading into the postseason, his top performances are 10.8 in the 100, 23.02 in the 200 and 20 feet, 3 inches in the long jump.

Junior Madelyn Napierski doesn’t typically start for Southington softball. Sometimes, she doesn’t get into a game. She did last week and wound up playing pivotal roles in victories over Cheshire and Hall. On Thursday against Cheshire, batting ninth, Napierski delivered the walk-off hit in a 3-2 Southington win. The following afternoon, as a courtesy runner, she scored twice — in the same inning — in a 4-0 victory over Hall.

IAN WIRTZ

AVERY WINTERS

Ian Wirtz showed a flash of leather and a flash of the future as the young Cheshire baseball team blazed down the homestretch of the regular season. The sophomore catcher doubled in a 7-0 road upset of No. 7 Fairfield Prep, then threw out four baserunners the next day in a 5-4 walk-off win over Notre Dame-West Haven. With their 4-0 finishing kick, Wirtz and the Rams managed to qualify for the Class LL state tournament.

Avery Winters is not out of season in spring. The Sheehan junior added to her checkered resume last Tuesday by winning the 200 meters and running a leg on the first-place 4x100 relay at the SCC East Sectional, a meet the Lady Titans won handily. Winters took the 200 in 26.36, not far from her school record of 26.2. She and Clarisse Aminawung, Allison Villano and Patrice Mansfield did lower their 4x100 record to 49.71.

Honoring those who didn’t return from war “They do not need our praise. They do not need that our admiration should sustain them. There is no immortality that is safer than theirs. We come not for their sakes but for our own, in order that we may drink at the same springs of inspiration from which

The number of Americans lost in battle also includes 405,399 in World War II, 90,220 in Vietnam and nearly 7,000 in the ongoing War on Terror. COVID-19 VACCINE

ASK THE EXPERT

What options are available for housebound residents and others who can’t make it to a vaccination clinic?

A Housebound is an individual who is unable to leave their home without difficulty. And due to this difficulty, they generally do not leave their home. It is usually due to advanced age, illness, or a disability. As part of the continued rollout of vaccinations in the State of Connecticut, the Wallingford Health Department has been designated the Homebound Coordinator for residents of Wallingford. The State of CT DPH has set up a website for those who are homebound and are seeking vaccination to register, which is as follows: https://dphsubmissions. ct.gov/homebound There are two criteria that are required to be met to qualify for a homebound vaccination. • Physically unable to go to a vaccination clinic or mass vaccination site with or without assistance. • No history of anaphylaxis or severe allergic reaction requiring the use of an epinephrine auto-injector (EPI pen). For residents who cannot register on the website for homebound vaccination can contact the Wallingford Health Department directly (203-294-2065) for registration on the town’s homebound vaccination program. The Wallingford Health Department will also, in the coming weeks, begin to set up mobile clinics in the community focusing on vulnerable populations and those who are uninsured/underinsured as more vaccination operators are available in town. Once the individual signs up with the Wallingford Health Department, we

Fair

Flags Across Cheshire needs volunteers

From A17

The Cheshire Veterans Council plans to place flags upon veteran graves and needs volunteers to help with the distribution during its Flags Across Cheshire campaign.

The fair is hoping to use digital ticketing and credit cards instead of cash, Schmidt said. “We’re going to have an upgraded system for ticketing and we will encourage everybody to use it,” he said. “We’re going to have a QR code in all our advertising to push everybody to online ticketing. Tickets will be available at the gate but we encourage everybody to do the opposite.”

Interested volunteers are invited to go to two local cemeteries, Hillside Cemetery off Wallingford Road and St. Bridget’s of Sweden Cemetery on Higgins Road at 1 p.m., on Saturday, May 29. Any identified graves of veter-

ans will have a volunteer place an American flag on the side where the veteran’s name is, or on the left side if centered as close to the headstone or marker as possible. If the gravestone has a flag holder, the flag is to be placed there. Any existing flags that are worn out should be removed and given to the volunteers staffing the cemeteries. These flags will be disposed of with proper flag protocol.

Whether it’s a celebration, date night, or just grabbing a bite to eat, this list of local restaurants is sure to satisfy your taste buds.

As the pandemic eases, one issue local animal shelters are noticing is an uptick in surrendered cats and dogs. “We can kind of assume that people were very lonely last year and maybe adopting an animal might not have been something they would have done had we not been on lockdown,” said Karen Annis, secretary of the Meriden Humane Society’s board of directors. “And now it’s a matter of how is that animal going to fit into whatever your real life is whenever we’re allowed to all go back to it.”
