At its June 8 business meeting, the council heard from Chairman of the Solid waste Committee Don Walsh that many residents had been requesting bulky trash pickup and that some of the federal funding could be used to offset costs.

“Starbucks is always looking for great locations to better meet the needs of our customers, and we are happy to confirm that we will be opening a new location in Cheshire, CT this fall,” a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

The plan calls for the pickup to begin in mid-September.

Starbucks has been interested in opening in town for years, Sitko said, having looked at numerous other locations. He doesn’t believe the international chain will detract from existing locally owned coffee shops.

In 2019, Cheshire collected roughly 1,400 tons of waste during bulky pickups. This gives the town a rough estimate of what the pickup will cost. However, with the pandemic and the hiatus from pickups over the past couple of years, officials say it's unclear what the disposal output will be.

The town will contract with AJ Waste Systems with a base fee of $155,000 plus $103 per ton.

The 2,000 square foot coffee shop at 944 S. Main St. will feature a drive-through and walk-up window. Construction began a few months ago after the project was approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission on Feb. 8. Starbucks replaces the Dragon Buffet restaurant.
