BOYS DAY OUT

By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN — Voters casting absentee ballots in the upcoming Aug. 9 primary need to get ballot applications soon if they are relying on the mail. Connecticut does not have noexcuse absentee voting but lawmakers did loosen restrictions earlier this year to include caregivers and commuters. The last day to pick up or request an absentee ballot is Aug. 8. All ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. on election day, according to Meriden City Clerk Denise Grandy. MERIDEN — The father of a teen who accidentally drowned earlier this month said his son was a good role model for his family, including his younger brothers. Eighteen-year-old Jefferson Paul Lo-

ja Flores came to Meriden from Cuenca, Ecuador in February. He drowned July 10 at Mixville Park in Cheshire. His friends and family remember him as a young man “...who had so much left to accomplish.”

Cheshire man to ride in Pan-Mass cancer fundraiser Press Release

NEEDHAM, Mass. – A Cheshire man is among 158 Connecticut residents who will take part in the 2022 Pan-Mass Challenge. Eddie Herskowitz will be among bicyclists from across the state participating in the PMC event Aug. 6 and 7. Participants also include several athletes from the nearby towns of Southington, North Haven and Kensington. Altogether, more than 6,000 riders will pedal in this bikea-thon with one- and twoday routes from 25 to 210 miles, with the goal of topping last year’s recordbreaking gift and raising $66 million for cancer research and patient care at DanaFarber Cancer Institute. With 16 route options, the event is designed to cater to all levels of cycling and fundraising ability. Most

participate in honor of a family member or friend fighting cancer and more than 800 riders and volunteers are cancer survivors or current patients, considered “Living Proof” of the PMC mission. More than 150 Dana-Farber employees are committed to the cause as riders and volunteers as well, in some cases to fund their own cancer research. The ride is billed as the nation’s single most successful athletic fundraiser. PMC donates 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar to DanaFarber as its largest single contributor, accounting for 55 percent of its Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, the PMC has raised more than $114 million for Dana-Farber, bringing its 42year contribution to DanaFarber to $831 million.

Billy Starr, founder and executive director of the PanMass Challenge, said: “We are so inspired by the dedication of our riders, volunteers, donors, sponsors and community members throughout the last two challenging years and can’t wait to see everyone on the road this August.”

Leaders call for united front after racist flyers discovered By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

Did you know? Peaches are a great source of vitamin A and C. Peaches are at their peak from June to the end of August. Peach trees produce fruit for about 12 years. The fuzz on peaches contains antioxidants which reinforces your immune system. The red-orange pigment in peaches is naturally turned into vitamin A in our bodies, giving us healthy eyes.

mains optimistic that she can fulfill her mission. Anne Wnuck, a 2015 Cheshire High graduate, earned a degree in international development at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. In February 2020, she went to Nepal with the Peace Corps, to serve as an English education teacher for two years. Those plans were derailed by the pandemic, a public health crisis that initially wasn’t fully understood by Peace Corps members in Nepal due to limited communication channels. Ultimately, the situation resulted in the Peace Corps evacuating more than 7,000 volunteers when the organization suspended all operations overseas in March 2020. Wnuck’s two-year mission ended just two months in. “Ever since I was young, I’ve

had a great affinity for the Peace Corps and its mission,” Wnuck said in an interview with The Cheshire Herald before her Nepal adventure. It’s taken two years for Wnuck’s plans to get back on track, but her resolve never faltered. Her commitment to improving conditions in less advantaged areas of the world is currently taking shape with three months of training in Sierra Leone. She’ll commence her work there in September. The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs, currently lists Sierra Leone at a Level 2 travel advisory, meaning “exercise increased caution due to crime and civil unrest.” See Volunteer, A7

Wnuck says she’s learning about the history of the area, including the connection it has to slavery in America and around the globe. Freetown and other areas were refuges for formerly enslaved peoples who migrated there in the 18th and 19th centuries. While English is the official language, Krio is the most widely spoken language, derived from creole English common in parts of the American south. “That history is just something that you can’t ignore, nor should you,” Wnuck said. The rural area where Wnuck will work may have limited electricity, as well as unreliable internet. She is con-

cerned about how that might affect her work in the classroom. However, “if there’s one thing the Peace Corps teaches you, it’s to be flexible,” she said.

President John F. Kennedy signed an executive order establishing the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961. Since then, according to the Peace Corps, nearly a quarter million volunteers have served in 143 countries. Overcoming a two-year pause on a plan that even in the best of times includes big challenges is no small feat. Keeping that commitment alive and following through is a testament to Wnuck’s determination. With her latest involvement, Wnuck may finally have a chance to make the contribution she envisioned.

Wallingford resident takes reins of education group By Jessica Simms Record-Journal staff

WETHERSFIELD — After 39 years working for the Con-

McCarthy grew up in Northford, but now lives on the east side of Wallingford with her husband. After she was already certified to teach in Connecticut, McCarthy got her law degree from the University of Connecticut, knowing she wanted to find a job that combined law and public education. She worked at the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities from 1979 to 1983 and then joined the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education as a staff attorney.

“I have assumed increased responsibilities over the years, becoming responsible not just for the legal issues, but government relations as well,” McCarthy said. A total of 151 school districts – 90% of the state’s public school population — belong to CABE, a nonprofit organization. CABE’s budget for last year was around $2.1 million, which goes toward holding conferences and providing programs and information for members.

As executive director, McCarthy will set priorities “to assist boards in providing high quality education through effective leadership.” “At this point, we have to prioritize by making sure we are hearing student voices,”

Tammy Raccio, chair of the Wallingford Board of Education, said she has found the support from CABE informative. “Patrice has been active sharing information with boards and easily accessible whenever I have reached out to CABE,” Raccio said. “She will be a strong leader and I look forward to continuing to work with her.” The Southington and Meriden school boards are also members of CABE. Colleen Clark, chair of the Southington school board, said CABE keeps local boards aware of changes in education policy at the state level. See CABE, A15

Traveling memorial honors victims of gun violence By Lauren Sellew Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is

hosting the traveling “Memorial of the Lost” — a tribute to victims of gun violence.

SUDOKU

Approximately 50 T-shirts are displayed on the front lawn of the church, each representing a person killed by gun violence this year in the state. The memorial arrived at the church, located at 145 Main St., July 12 and will remain until July 25, said the Rev. Helena Martin. It was created earlier this year at Camp Washington, an Episcopal camp and retreat center in the western part of the state. Each shirt has the name of gun violence victim, along with their age and date of death.

R247962 V3

The shirts represent “the space” the people who died would have occupied, said Camp Washington director Cameron Taylor. Creating the shirts, with information from gunmemorial.org, had a big impact on the youth involved.

People walk by the “Memorial of the Lost” in front of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 145 Main St. in Southington last week. The traveling display calls attention to victims of gun violence. It will be at St. Paul’s until July 25. Dave Zajac, Record-Journal

of them remember what they were doing that day that someone else lost their life.”

Martin said a St. Paul’s parishioner, who is on the Camp Washington board, suggested the church host the memorial because it fits with St. Paul’s mission to “Some of (the victims) are bring awareness to gun viotheir age,” Taylor said. “Some lence.

“One of the things we do together is pray so that we can go out and be who God wants us to be,” Martin said. “Gun violence is a public health crisis right now and we need to treat it that way. It’s a problem that matters to the church and matters to God.” As she looked at photos of the victims on gunmemorial.org, Martin thought about the fact they left behind parents, siblings, children and friends and were “absolutely loved by God.” Martin also noticed many were men of color. Martin feels that these kinds of displays are important because residents of Southington, which is predominantly white, can feel removed from the tragedies that led to the deaths. “It’s all the more reason to display (the memorial) in Southington,” Martin said. lsellew@record-journal.com 203-317-2225 Twitter: @LaurenSellewRJ

“I am very excited for (McCarthy) and the things that she will do to transform us and move us to the next level,” Lockhart said.

“They have a complete board policy package that they put together and continually update that we also have access to,” Clark said.

This, in turn, will ensure that the tax burden is as equitably distributed among Cheshire taxpayers as possible.

Along with focusing on the children, McCarthy will stress the “importance of school board service” by helping current board members communicate why it is important to be a school board member.

Robert Kosienski, president of the Meriden Board of Education, said having someone from the area as a leader on CABE is helpful.

The firm of eQuality Valuation Services, LLC has been contracted by the Town of Cheshire to assist in conducting the revaluation for the Oct. 1, 2023 Grand List.

“Now more than ever people in communities need to step up and consider, whether they have the time and energy to serve on their local board,” McCarthy said. “And other community members need to support their boards of education because these are volunteer elected officials who have jobs and families and other interests and they are really taking on a role that is so important to our students as well as for our democracy.”

“For Meriden, specifically, having a local person who understands the issues that we face on a daily basis is always appreciated,” Kosienski said. “We look to CABE often for information regarding policy, government relations, labor relations information, etc.” Leonard Lockhart, first vice president of CABE and vice president of the Windsor Board of Education, has been working with McCarthy since 2012.

The New England Nationalist Social Club is also called NSC-131 and has been recently involved in recruitment and protest activity in the greater Boston area and in Rhode Island, experts say. Attorney generals from New England states have labeled the group a street gang, according to a recent report from NPR. Several communities in Connecticut have organized unity rallies opposing the group’s recent recruitment push. The discovery of the flyers disturbed residents who found them scattered in the streets and on lawns. Similar flyers were found in the towns of Berlin, Southington, West Hartford and Bristol during the same weekend.

Mangiafico, a member of the Middletown Common Council, was recently hired as Wallingford’s adult education director. He was named Outstanding Administrator of the Year for 2022 by the Coalition on Adult Basic Education.

Democrats in the 13th Senate District, which covers all of Meriden and Middlefield, and parts of Middletown and Cheshire, have a choice between party-endorsed candidate Jan Hochadel of Meriden and Anthony Mangiafico of Middletown. State Sen. Mary Daugherty Abrams, a Democrat, announced earlier this year she would not seek reelection. The primary winner faces Meriden Republican Joseph Vollano, a local businessman and podcaster who has made previous runs for state and local offices.

A third Democrat candidate, Michael Ecke of Cheshire, has filed candidacy termination papers with the state Election Enforcement Commission.

Hochadel received 31 delegate votes at the May 10 district nominating convention, while Mangiafico garnered 13 votes and Ecke won 10.
