Subdivision plan still raises concern Record Journal staff
The subject is ... sunflowers Local artists enjoy special theme class
By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
Several local artists signed up for recent Artsplace classes with a sunflower theme. The first class quickly booked up, which resulted in a second class being added. Artsplace Director Joan Pilarczyk said the sunflower theme was specifically chosen in a nod to Cheshire's Summer of Sunflowers, the "community growing project" created by the Coalition for a Sustainable Cheshire, Cheshire Pollinator Pathway
Historical society needs volunteers The Cheshire Historical Society is looking for volunteers and that recruitment effort is fitting into the organization’s new strategic plan.

“This is an exciting time to be involved with our organization as we are implementing new programming and other ideas derived from our revamped strategic plan,” said CHS Director and Public Relations Coordinator Jaime McCormick.
A plan was developed last summer after the CHS board met with museum consultant, Kathy Craughwell-Varda. “The plan would support the CHS mission of keeping Cheshire’s unique and continuing history alive by creating connections that engage the community through new and existing collections, exhibitions, and programs,” McCormick said, adding, “Some of the goals that we are working toward include inspiring

House painting tip: Hire a guy By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
Would you be surprised to know I painted the outside of my house, not once, but three times?
Neighbors, interestingly enough, had quite a bit of input and advice on my project. New Englanders, they told me, painted their houses in one of two ways: “They only paint the front of the house or only paint one side of the house each year. It’s cheaper.”

As for me? Who knew that neighbor Bill, who lives across the street, happens to be a professional painter? That’s some good luck. Furthermore, he’s excellent. He and his crew have painted the house twice now You know what? I am happy to give up that job — the hubby is relieved as well.

High school students who are looking for community service hours, retirees, or ages in-between are welcome, McCormick said.

Volunteers can help with events and programs, like those mentioned, or may request archiving, collection care or community engagement. The Historical Society has worked with students in a college internship, where the professor is the point person and CHS is the work site, said McCormick. Also, if a volunteer has a particular area of interest that they would like to explore “we can try to accommodate that as well,” she said.

Volunteering is also a “great way to learn more about our community and meet others around town with similar interests,” McCormick said. To find out more information about volunteering, email cheshirehistory@ che.necoxmail.com or call 203-272-2574. Interested persons also may stop by the HitchcockPhillips House, 43 Church Drive, Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

“We are very flexible in that we can open the building for small groups to work, set up appointment times and also have projects that can be done from home,” McCormick said. interests in regards to members the PZC. At the July 12 meeting, representatives for the developer, Lovley Development Inc. of Southington, presented alterations that have been made to the plan in response to some of those concerns. The plan was pre-
sented before a packed house with many in the audience from the Wallingford Road neighborhood. In the revised plan, the number of units has been reduced 40 to 34; there will be fewer houses, with the number of bedrooms reduced to 85, but the houses will be larger. Open space will increase from 14.8 acres to 15.7, and the setback from the existing homes increased from 27 feet to 38 feet.
Attorney Anthony Fazzone, who is representing the applicant, said the new plan should meet the preliminary requirements. He requested that the hearing be held open as the developers had just received a memorandum of law and needed time to respond. Andrew Quirk, the architect for the project, presented the updated plans to the commissioners. At the previous meeting, many residents expressed concerns about the proposed emergency access way through Charles Drive, insisting that it would directly cut into a current resident’s property. Quirk explained that the plans no longer call for that exit point.

The proposed emergency access way will be routed to Wallingford Road, eliminating the issue of the easement on Charles Drive. Quirk said there will be two emergency access points on Wallingford Road. The project will also comply with fire department recommendations to widen the main roadways to 28 feet. Residents continued to express concern about various issues, despite the revisions the developers outlined. An increase in traffic to the neighborhood is one concern that has been discussed throughout the planning process.
The study estimated that each residence would have probably one or two cars, and each household would probably average about 10 trips a day. The traffic study was done during the summer. Hesketh estimated roughly a five to 10% increase in traffic during school hours. Some residents raised the question of whether the traffic study was biased since Hesketh was hired by Lovley; however, members of the Commission pointed out that it is standard for developers to hire their own firms.
Another issue of potential bias that some residents Lovley Development hired raised, was in regards to the Scott Hesketh of F.A. Regulators finalize fines for utilities over Isaias response NEW BRITAIN (AP) — Connecticut regulators last week finalized millions of dollars in fines against the state’s two largest electricity distributors for what officials called the companies’ failures in their preparations and responses to Tropical Storm Isaias, which caused hundreds of thousands of power outages last year. On Wednesday, July 14, The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, or PURA, gave final approval to a $28.6 million civil penalty against Eversource and a $1.2 million civil penalty against United Illuminating.

Both are appealing the profit reduction orders, but not the civil penalties. Isaias roared through the Northeast on Aug. 4, knocking down scores of trees and utility wires. In Connecticut, more than 630,000 Eversource customers and more than 113,000 United Illuminating customers lost power during the storm. PURA said the companies failed to comply with performance standards including not deploying enough line workers. Regulators also said the companies violated reporting requirements by not disclosing minor accidents involving workers during their storm responses.

Shellfish ‘extremely scarce’ and pricer this summer Local restaurants report demand is high, supply low
“This past year, it’s the highest we’ve ever seen it,” Lariviere said. “Cost for us is up to about $50 per pound for fresh lobster.
By Faith Williams Record-Journal staff
“Lobster rolls are our number one selling item on our menu,” he added. “It’s had a dramatic effect ...”
Some local restaurants are reporting a high demand and low supply of shellfish, specifically lobster, leading to higher prices. For many in New England, summer is the time for lobster rolls and other lobster dishes. In the past, the high demand and increased supply during summer has meant cheaper prices as restaurants try avoid being stuck with excess inventory. Lisa Onofri, owner of Close Harbour Seafood in Southington, said her customers have definitely noticed the higher prices for seafood. “Usually during the summer (prices) come down,” she said. “They would become a little more affordable because there’s usually an abundance, but this year we aren’t seeing a reduction in any of the prices.”
MABEL’S TABLE AT MICHAEL’S DELI Wednesday, June 30, the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for Mabel’s Table, located at 55 Elm St. Formerly known as Michael’s Deli, the location is under new ownership and has become Mabel’s Table at Michael’s Deli. Stop by for dine-in or takeout meals.
Despite the increase, it hasn’t stopped diners from returning to their favorite restaurants for seafood, especially lobster rolls.
A hot lobster roll at the Lobster Tails Food Truck in Wallingford.
Onofri said she thinks the recent rainy weather is partly to blame. “This week shellfish is going to be ridiculously expensive because of the rain,” she said. “We’re going to see shellfish extremely scarce and outrageously priced over the next weeks.” She said the rainy weather
interferes with the ecosystems and the shellfish beds become tainted. Onofri said the beds in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island have all been closed. With everyone looking to Maine and Canada for supply, prices have skyrocketed. NielsonIQ, a database website, has reported that aver-
age unit prices of seafood have increased 18.7 percent as of April 2021 compared to the previous year. This is more than any other food group or item.
“I feel bad for all of us,” Onofri said. “We’re all just paying these exorbitant prices trying to get back to doing what we were doing normally. Hopefully it doesn’t last long, but it sounds like it’s going to last a while.” Other places to enjoy lobster rolls this season:

Pesky Japanese beetle a challenge for homeowners By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
plants with strong odors, like onions, or herbs such as marigolds and evergreens. Shade trees such as oak, hickory, dogwood and elm are not really attractive to Japanese beetles.
From one corner of town to another something is crunching and munching its way through everything: From prized roses to carefully-tended vegetable gardens.
“It is hard to predict sometimes because they will often attack one species of maple but avoid another,” Simpson said.
Causing all this destruction is the Japanese beetle. Peabody Museum’s Ray Simpson, the assistant in entomology, sizes up these macroinvertebrates as a successful opportunistic exotic species.
Japanese beetles are abundant in the central and eastern United States, including Connecticut.
A Japanese beetle.
is clearly a defensive posture, and the spines help to deter predators,” he said. Many animals – like birds, mammals, spiders and other insects – will eat Japanese beetles, Simpson said. “They do not have any chemical defense or immunity to native predators.”
The beetle populations are “simply so numerous” that predators can’t keep up and “Being a scarab beetle, they control them, Simpson tend to be round and smooth said. “There have been sevwith a hard ‘shell’ which is eral fungal and wasp paramostly made up of the reddish metallic wing covers – elytra – and the green metallic thorax and head,” said Simpson. “The color is an attractive structural color that is retained in dead specimens. There are marginal tufts of white hairs on the abdomen and black legs.” Simpson recalled studying beetles as a youngster and taking notice of their spiny legs. “They would stick their hind legs up in the air. This
sites that have been introduced as a biocontrol that have been shown to be effective against the grubs and adult beetles.” Japanese beetle larvae develop in the soil. As grubs, they spend their time eating turf grass roots before emerging in July and August as adults to live for just a month or two – long enough to cause immense damage. Most homeowners probably know the favorite foods of beetles. These include roses,
raspberries, apple, plum, grapes, birch, Japanese maple, cherries, and many garden vegetables. “Your yard likely has many plants that are attractive to it, including your grass,” Simpson said. “A yard is often the perfect place for young and adults, because all their food is present.” Voracious as Japanese beetles are, there are plants beetles will avoid or which repel the beetle altogether, Simpson said. These include
What’s a homeowner to do? Simpson does not recommend pesticides, as these “are more injurious to native insects and pollinators.” Since these beetles are very visible as they sit on plants, they are “quite easy to pick off by hand,” Simpson said. However, home and garden centers sell traps which contain a commercial pheromone or flower scent to attract beetles. The insects fall in the trap and can be disposed of.

“Japanese beetles are quite ordinary in their native range (Japan) where it fills the same ecological role as many of the native scarab beetles in the U.S. Unfortunately, like many exotic invasive species, when it is released from predators, parasites, and diseases found in its native range, an exotic species often goes crazy and takes over,” Simpson said.
“Plants more familiar to them in their native range may be more susceptible, and given the eastern U.S. and Japan are similar in plant fauna, it's not surprising that they like it here so much.”

Republicans unified against extending powers "There is no longer a public health emergency related to the pandemic that warrants the continuation of these emergency orders until Sept. 30 that the legislative branch isn't equipped to handle," state Rep. William Petit said in a press release. "We swore to uphold the constitution and in order to do so need three equal participating branches of government. And right now with the continuation of these emergency powers that isn't the case."
Lamont has lifted nearly all restrictions imposed under his emergency authority since March 9, 2020, with the most visible and contentious exception being a requirement for mask wearing by the unvaccinated in schools and other indoor public places.

So, which home improvements are the easiest to do when the weather is warm? Read on for the top projects we at Calcagni Real Estate recommend to keep your home looking—and functioning—its best, long after summer’s sun has faded into the horizon.
REPLACE YOUR ROOF
CLEAN OR REPLACE YOUR WINDOWS
After the harsh conditions of Connecticut’s winter and spring, your windows are probably looking a bit dingy. Cleaning them on both sides will help your house shine from the outside in, and you may be surprised at just how much of an improvement this makes, including enjoying summer’s sunshine in all its glory! If your windows are old and drafty, consider replacing them this summer. Over the colder
If your roof is rounding the 15–20-year mark, it’s probably time to start thinking of replacing it. Leaky roofs can wreak havoc in your home, and that can mean unexpected expenses (not to mention stress). Summer provides the optimal time to replace a roof because in order to form a weathertight seal, new shingles require heat. Just be sure your roofer tears off the existing shingles, so they can determine the condition of the roof deck underneath. Layering on shingles over an existing roof may be a cheaper option but can lead to headaches down the road.

POWER WASH YOUR EXTERIOR
Harsh cold weather and hot, humid conditions can result in an exterior that looks a little worse for wear. Shake off your home’s past year by power washing your house, garage, driveway and deck to rid it of dirt, mold, stains, and debris. You may be shocked at just how “new” everything looks! You can rent a power washer or hire a professional to do it for you but doing so in summer will keep your home looking its best for the coming year. 239228
