BARTLEM PROJECT

End’s in sight for design phase

By Francesca Fontanez Special to the Record-Journal

Citizen staff

During the July 11 Town Council meeting, the panel received an update on the Bartlem Park South project from Parks and Recreation Director John Gawlak. The town plans to turn the area into a multi-use recreation attraction with features such as athletic fields and a performance stage. The design phase of the park project is expected to conclude by fall. The project is overseen by an ad hoc committee of councilors, town officials and an engineering firm hired by the town, Weston & Sampson. The group expects to submit the plan to town boards, including to the Planning and Zoning Committee, by next month. The committee’s intent is to get the design phase wrapped up by the end of October.

Student wins national award for texting and driving PSA Press Release

A Cheshire Academy student recently won a national award for her video on texting and teen driving safety. Claire Carson, Class of 2023, earned first place in the public service announcement category of the "Just Drive PSA Video & Social Media Contest." She was awarded $5,000 from NJM Insurance Group, sponsors of the Impact Teen Drivers’ nationwide contest. Carson’s video, “Eyes on the Road,” prompts viewers to consider how often they receive text messages while driving.

Her video then transitions to car accidents with text messages showing up on the screen, reading “OK, drive safe and I’ll see you there,” and “Are you home okay?” Carson concludes her PSA with an eyeopening statistic: drivers are at least four times as likely to get into a motor vehicle crash when looking at a phone. A ceremony was held on the Cheshire Academy campus, July 7, that included Carson’s family, academy faculty and staff, and representatives from Impact Teen Drivers.

The temperature is ramping up. The good news is there are plenty of options if you’re looking to beat the heat, and some of them might be closer than you’d think. Dress accordingly, and check out a few of these local water-based wonders.

Cheshire Community Pool, Bartlem Park The Cheshire Community Pool is a cut above the rest. Gawlek said little has changed since the design was presented at referendum last year, when residents voted in favor of the $7.9 million project. The site is off Route 10, across from the high school and adjacent to Bartlem Park.

As for contemporary highlights, in 2021 Lake Compounce introduced the public to Venus Vortex. This four-person raft ride sends brave patrons barreling through a dark shoot before plunging into a giant Venus flytrap-esque half pipe. An even more recent development is the updated Storm Surge, the famous lighthouse waterslide that’s been revamped for the 2022 season. Whether your idea of a fun day is floating down the lazy river or chasing an adrenaline rush, definitely look into a trip to Lake Compounce.

It should be no surprise that the oldest still-operating amusement park in the country is home to some pretty astonishing attractions. While Lake Compounce may seem like an old classic when it comes to aquatic activity, the water park has definitely experienced some updates to give a fresh new feel to a family favorite. Before covering the new updates, it’s only fair to shout out the water park icons that live in the hearts of so many. From the Clipper Cove water playground to the Croc-O-Nile Lazy River, Lake Compounce essentially dominated the childhood summers of Connecticut’s millennial population – we can relive our glory days since the park is still home to these gems.

Residents asked to voluntarily conserve water Citizen report

Water-saving tips

On July 14, the State of Connecticut declared a Stage 2 drought condition throughout all eight counties. Moving to Stage 2 means that drought conditions were emerging statewide and residents and businesses should take measures to minimize future drought impact.

The South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority shared some simple things residents can do to converse water :

“Residents should be mindful of their water consumption and take sensible steps to reduce impacts on other water uses and on the environment,” Gov. Ned Lamont said. “We must begin early steps now to mitigate the potential for harm should the drought become prolonged.”

Check for any dripping faucets or running toilets. A leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water per year. The average leaky toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water per day. That’s over 6,000 gallons of water a month.

A bath typically uses up to 70 gallons of water, whereas a five-minute shower will use only 10-25 gallons, depending on the efficiency of The Stage 2 drought declara- your showerhead. More primary care expertise Right in your neighborhood.

The Cheshire Citizen | cheshirecitizen.com

Take care when the temperature soars From the Chesprocott Health District :

Tips to stay safe in extreme heat

Heat and health

Stay cool: Keep your body temperature cool to avoid heat-related illness

Infants and young children are sensitive to the effects of high temperatures and rely on others to regulate their environments and provide adequate liquids. People 65 years of age or older may not compensate for heat stress efficiently and are less likely to sense and respond to change in temperature. People who are overweight may be prone to heat sickness because of their tendency to retain more body heat.

People who overexert during work or exercise may become dehydrated and susceptible to heat sickness. People who are physically ill, especially those with heart disease or high blood pressure, or who take certain medications, such as for depression, insomnia, or poor circulation, may be affected by extreme heat.

Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible. If you must be outdoors, try to limit your activity to the morning and evening, and try to rest often in shady areas so that your body has a chance to cool off. Find an air-conditioned shelter (Call 2-1-1 for a list of cooling centers). Do not rely on a fan as your primary cooling device. Avoid direct sunlight. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Take cool showers or baths. Check on those most at-risk several times a day. Pets that cannot be brought indoors should be provided ready access to water and shade to keep them cool. See Care, A7

Wash your car at a car wash. Washing your car at home can use between 40 and 140 gallons of water.

From A5

Wash only full loads of clothes. Older top-loading machines use 40 gallons of water to wash a full load. Today's newer standard models use 27 gallons, and more efficient Energy Star washers use 14 gallons per wash. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean patios, sidewalks, etc. Water flows from a hose at about six gallons of water a minute. If it takes 30 minutes to clean a patio or deck, using a broom saves 500 gallons of water.

Care

A7

Quality customized.

Washing your car at a car wash where water is cleaned and recycled uses about 15 gallons of fresh water for each wash. Use only non-potable water to water your lawn and gardens. Use a bucket to catch extra water when you run the water before a shower. If you take a bath, use the bath water to water trees, shrubs, and non-edible plants (not your vegetable or herb gardens).

Drink more water than usual. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more fluids.

From A6

Stay hydrated. Because your body loses fluids through sweat, you can become dehydrated during times of extreme heat.

HHC opens Center for Gender Health This month Hartford Healthcare introduced its new medical clinic to provide individualized, compassionate care for transgender and gender non-conforming patients. The Center for Gender Health is inside the Community Care Center at 132 Jefferson St. Hartford. It offers various services – endocrinology, urology, gynecology, plastic surgery, voice therapy, primary care and behavioral health. It will run on a bi-monthly clinic model. The faciity won’t see patients until September but is accepting twenty referrals and making appointments. The goal is to create a safe space for transgender individuals seeking medical care, said Dr. Patrick Cahill, infectious disease doctor and medical director of the Community Care Center. “[Trans] people have had difficulty finding understanding and accepting medical providers and didn’t know where to turn to get people who could talk to them on an appropriate level,” he said.

al reported having at least one negative experience related to their gender, such as being refused treatment, verbal harassment and physical or sexual assault. “The barriers that are most debilitating for trans and gender diverse individuals are stigma, stereotype and fear,” said Dr. Laura Saunders, psychologist and director of the Center for Gender Health. “The expectation of rejection or feeling like you have to provide education to your provider is very daunting. No patient wants to feel that they are being misunderstood based on a core aspect of their identity.”

for the tour – this three-hour jaunt includes a peaceful paddle on the river as well as a snack-and-swim break at Kelsey beach. Regardless of how you choose to spend the day, Branford River Paddlesports has a location and charm that no one can resist.

friend drives over to visit, make sure to take your wheels to the beach.

Honorable mentions: An unlikely honorable mention goes to Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort in Middlefield. Despite the wintery name, there’s a giant water tubing slide attraction that should not be missed. Also, Portland's Brownstone Quarry Adventure Sports Park must be mentioned. This unique oasis has a plethora of inflatables, rentals and activities that provide all-day entertainment. Fair warning – on hotter days, due to the brownstone landscape, the water in the quarry does tend to grow a bit warmer than one might expect. Feeling the adrenaline rush of ziplining into warm quarry water is one of the experiences that everyone truly should try at least once in their life. Mangiafico withdraws from primary By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

Democrat Anthony Mangiafico has withdrawn from the 13th district Senate race, ending an Aug. 9 primary runoff against fellow candidate and Meriden resident Jan Hochadel. Mangiafico said he notified state election officials Mon-

day, July 18 after learning that he had not raised enough money to qualify for public financing and could not keep pace with Hochadel’s sizeable volunteer campaign staff. Candidates needed to raise more than $17,300 from 300 in-district donors to be eligible for the state financing for a primary runoff.

“I don’t see a path to victory,” Mangiafico said. “I think it would be more divisive for the party for me to stay. … The best thing for me is to withdraw. Jan did have all the union backing her, that’s a lot of volunteers. I can’t compete with that. I will be backing Jan. I will do anything I can in November to support her.” Mangiafico is director of Adult Education in Wallingford and has served on Middletown’s Common Council for three years. See Primary, A16

Letters to the Editor Vote for Arata Editor : Lou Arata is running to serve as our Connectiut state representative for the 83rd District, which includes parts of Berlin, Cheshire and Meriden. Lou Arata is the voice for smaller and more efficient government. Lou recognizes that Connecticut has been increasing the size of state government and raising taxes under one-party control, since 1991. If you want to stop the excessive spending and taxation spree the current Connecticut legislature is on, then tune into Lou’s messages over the next couple of months. I’m sure, come November, you will see that Lou Arata is the clear choice for state representative. George Millerd Kensington

Sunny Paquette, of Cheshire, examines a milkweed leaf for monarch caterpillars at North Brooksvale garden, July 20. Photos by Joy VanderLek, The Cheshire Citizen

I chose Masonicare at Ashlar Village because many of the residents have the same interests as I do. Exercise and competition help keep me active.

Studying pollinators

Last month, when I tore a shoulder muscle playing tennis I could barely lift my arm above my head.

The Cheshire Pollinator Pathway hosted a program on insects and pollinators at its North Brooksvale garden, July 20.

Who knew? Masonicare has physical therapists to get you back in the game!

Leading the workshop were Kathleen Dugas, agricultural research technician from The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station; and Joanna Giddings, Cheshire Pollinator Pathway education and outreach director. The program, made possible by a grant from the Claire C. Bennitt Watershed Fund, focused on insect identification, and how insects are necessary for a healthy watershed and ecosystem. Dugas talked about the jobs insects perform, such as decomposition and pollination, and encouraged audience members to search for monarch caterpillars and other insects in the garden. — Joy VanderLek

Transphobia in the medical field Whenever Dawn Ennis goes to the doctor, she knows that her identity as a transgender woman will come up at some point. Known as the “trans elbow,” Ennis explained that if she were to come in for a hurt elbow, the first thing the doctors would focus on was her gender identity. “If I’m talking to anyone in the medical field, they will take my transgender identity and somehow factor into whatever it is they’re diagnosing,” she said.

In 2018, Ennis had to get approval from a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a mental health counselor and an endocrinologist to set up a vaginoplasty — also known as bottom surgery.

Ennis said that during the first appointment, the doctor asked her a series of transphobic questions, such as “are you gay or straight?” He also admitted he was selftaught at vaginoplasty and expressed doubts about the whether the operation would have the desired affect, according to Ennis. She was able to transfer her surgery to a doctor in New York a year later. However, she did experience complications following the surgery and visited a doctor in Connecticut. When he saw her pelvis, he expressed concerns about the quality of the procedure. When Ennis learned about the Center for Gender Health, she knew it would be valuable to the transgender community. “There are too few places to help all the trans people who need gender-affirming care and that’s not just in Connecticut but across the United States,” she said. “People are going to be traveling from all over the country to Connecticut because they can’t get this kind of care where they live.”

HIP HIP HOORAY! ARE YOU READY FOR SUMMER VACAY?

Mangiafico’s withdrawal means the district’s primary ballots will have to be reworked to eliminate the Democratic primary in the 13th Senate district. Democrat Michael Ecke of Cheshire dropped out of the race several weeks ago, so Hochadel will now face Republican nominee Joseph Vollano in the general election.

“Now the voters have a clear choice,” Vollano said. “Someone who has an alliance with the unions and not the taxpayers, and an outsider like myself with a proven history of being on the side of taxpayers. Do they want business as usual in Hartford or real change?” Vollano said his top priorities are tax relief for state residents, inflation strategies, juvenile crime, critical race theory, often called CRT, and parental choice in schools.

The 13th Senate district seat opened after Democrat state Sen. Vollano reported $8,895.04 raised through June 30, according to the state Elections Enforcement Commission. He owns a fuel supply company and is a member of the Meriden Board of Assessment Appeals.

Part of Middlefield was recently redrawn to put some voters in the Senate’s 12th district. Mangiafico said he will consider another run for office when his council term ends in a year and a half.

“Anthony called me this morning,” Hochadel said. “We have been talking all along. He’s doing it for the best of the party. I really can’t wait to work with him. We share all the same values. I definitely see a bright future for him.”

Vollano has previously run unsuccessful campaigns for state and local office. He was originally one of two Republicans seeking the endorsement in the 83rd House district this year, before switching to the Senate race, which allowed Republicans to avoid a primary.

to be identified to update the digitized, official medical record and learn about their health needs. This allows the entire staff to know their name and pronouns when the patient comes for a second time. “Cisgender, heterosexual [people] have probably never thought about the fact that they can just walk into any doctor’s office and they’re identified by their birth name and that’s what happens to be what they choose to go by,” Cahill said.

What should a new patient expect? Since the Center for Gender Health will function on a clinic model, clients will make an appointment for a specific service. The clinic will be open twice a month, but Saunders hopes that they will eventually move to a weekly schedule. The center will also have recovery support specialists to lead group therapy. They are transgender or queer individuals who are transitioning or have transitioned.

He explained that patients could request a name change at any time and as many times as they want. Saunders says that these small actions, like changing a name on an official record and having all services in one location, make a huge difference in patient care.

Cahill, Hartford Healthcare’s infectious disease doctor and medical director of the Community Care Center, walked through what patients should expect at their first appointment.
