The number of teen drivers has decreased nationally for a variety of reasons, a trend noticed by officials at local driving schools. “These days, people are not motivated to get their li cense,” said Jay Alvarez, owner of Shield Driving School in Meriden. “The younger driver, they don’t want their license. They don’t want that responsibili ty. A lot of the parents are forcing their kids to get their license at 16 because they need them to get a job, they need them to go to practice, they need them to go to Theschool.”National Highway Traf fic Safety Administration re ported that out of the 228.2 million licensed drivers in the United States in 2020, only 11.6 million (5.1%) of them were considered to be young drivers, ages 15 to 20 years old. The Cheshire Citizen Lawn signs with the message “Residen tial Green Award” are popping up in Cheshire. The placards are being award ed to residents who work “to foster a healthier watershed for pollinators, mammals and humans.”
That’s according to Cheshire Pollinator Pathway co-chair Joanna deBear. The pollinator pathway group, along with the Mill River Watershed Association and the Coalition for a Sustainable Cheshire, sponsor the local recognition. “It is a program acknowledging home owners who are being environmentally responsible,” deBear said. For the month of August, Residential Green Awards were installed at the Oak Ridge Drive home of Joanna Giddings and in the yard of Adele Kasinskas, on Redwood Drive. The awards are given to homeowners who are, first and foremost, actively "shrinking their lawns,” said MRWA President Ron Walters.

The last weekend of July, I walked the neighborhoods of South Meriden, just blocks from Meriden Markham Airport. Though the sun was begin ning to sink behind Dia mond Hill and the early evening shadows were grow ing longer by the minute, my energy was flagging from canvassing out in the mid-summer heat. As I walked through the neighborhood in search of some shade, I noticed a woman digging and planting in a large garden. Curious, I approached her, introduced myself as a candidate for the 83rd House District, and asked what issues were im portant to her. Before she hermesheanswered, walkedthroughgarden. By Joy VanderLek The Citizen I hate camping. As a child, my parents would load us into the VW camper and head onto the roads of America. My sibling and I never knew where we were going, but we were both terrified. All our vacations were camping vacations. There was no motel, no pool, no ice ma chine, no television not even a massaging mattress bed for a quarter. When we lived in Arizona, our adventures included excursions to Mexico. You haven’t lived until you’ve had a “nature moment” on a sand dune in the vast nothingness of the desert outside of OurNogales.family vacations often featured side-ofthe-road rest stops along a busy highway or in the woods. Our usual camping spot wasn’t even a campground. It was a pullover to the side of the road plot, almost always next to dark and scary woods. That’s one reason why I grew to hate camping. To this day, I am scarred from a camping in cident along the Skyline Drive in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park. After tucking me into the bed in the pop-up camper, and my brother into a canvas bed that bridged the driver and passenger seats, my parents went for a walk. Someone should have pulled their parenting credentials right then. What the heck were they thinking? It was dark. It was late. There were noises all about. For sure, I thought my brother and I would be mauled by a woodland creature or Soworse.much for camping being peaceful and Someenjoyable.folks enjoy camping. I knew someone who went “glamping” with her family. Glamping is where you play all day and peo ple who you hire do the cooking and tent set-up and take-down. It’s glamorous camp Mindying. Otlowski and her family decided to camp at Housatonic Meadows State Park timing it perfectly for what was, at that time, a 100-year storm. Their tents collapsed from the torrents of rain. Mindy insists they had fun anyway, but I’m not so sure. However, I’ve collected many stories that align with my own experience. Deborah Anastasio won’t soon forget her camping experience. She recalled: “I was on an herbalist training retreat and they had us set up our tents. We were raided by warthogs because we were under the nut trees.” She said the wild animals made “horrendous, bone-crunching noises,” and grunted menacingly. The whole ordeal was so scary, Deborah said it chased campers out from their hiding place in the outhouse.

Ron Gagliardi had quite the camping experience. He and his wife have only gone camping once in their 53-year marriage. The ad venture he describes could be Somewhy.years back, the two ac cepted an invitation to go camping on a friend's farm in Watertown. “We helped unfold his ‘insect proof’ tent and were treated to an extensive crop of the dead insects,” leftover from the previous season. “Later that afternoon, while tramp ing through his fields, we were treated to the ‘music’ of bullets whizzing past our ears from the rifles of some very careless rabbit hunters.” “We survived that scare and later settled down to roast marshmallows over a crack ling fire, partially fueled by an old stump,” Ron recalled. “Unfortunately, to add to our memories, an entire colony of carpenter ants made an emergency exit from their soon-to-be, hellfire stump house, crawling in waves to ward us campers seated in their escape path around the Ronfire.”and his wife made “a hasty retreat” to their car and drove “the bullet-free miles home to our rabbitfree, ant-free home.”

Caitlin Legere Fitzpatrick tells of the time she and her 20-something friends decid ed to go camping in the Catskills, on land a friend owned. One of her friends announced she was bringing a mystery guy her dad knew. “Honestly, I was pretty up set,” Caitlin said. “I didn’t know this person. I was an noyed, and a little freaked out that she would invite some ‘random’ guy.” To make matters worse, the mystery guy arrived late, af ter they’d set up camp and were eating s’mores by the Caitlinfire. was thinking the worst, “a stranger arriving in the middle of the night, in the woods …” But as soon as she heard him say, “Hello,” Caitlin was head over heels "It was love at first sight.”
Caitlin and Brian the “mys tery man”– will celebrate their 14th wedding anniver sary this fall. Caitlin now says it was the “best camping trip ever.”

Her school is busy this summer, but she said restrictions on 16 and 17 year old drivers are prompting many teens to wait until they are 18. According to the Connecti cut State DMV Center for Teen Safe Driving, 16 and 17-year-olds can’t get their license until they have had their driver’s permit for at least four months. They also have to complete an eight hour Safe Driving Practices class, a two hour parent/le gal guardian training and 40 hours of practice driving. Once they obtain their li cense after passing a road test and vision test, 16 and 17-year-olds can’t drive alone with friends their own age for a year and can’t drive between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. “I think you are seeing some students waiting until they are 18 so they can just drive without restrictions,” Stanley Insaid.Connecticut, the number of teens getting their learn er’s permit has mostly stayed even in recent years, about 25,000 per year, said Tony Guerrera, deputy com missioner of the state De partment of Motor Vehicles. Health district highlights immunization awareness Press Release Marked in August, National Immunization Awareness Month highlights the impor tance of getting your recom mended vaccines through out your Accordinglife.to the Centers for Disease Control and Preven tion, many children and adults get sick each year from diseases that vaccines can Vaccinationsprevent. are the first and most important line of defense in preventing respi ratory Anotherdiseases.reason why August is deemed National Immu nization Awareness Month is to make sure children get caught up on missed wellchild visits and receive their recommended vaccines. Likewise, adults need to keep their vaccinations up to date because immunity from childhood can wear off, and over time, adults can be at risk for different diseases. Adult vaccines can vary due to age, health history, and/or occupation. Some adult vac cinations include those for: influenza, COVID-19, DTAP, shingles, Hepatitis B, and pneumonia. Vaccination is a key public health priority; because it not only protects the vaccinated person, but also prevents the spread of disease in the community. This is especially vital to those most vulnerable to se rious complications: infants and young children, the el derly, and those with chron ic conditions and weakened immune systems. Less turf grass lawn equals less water use. Water conser vation is important year round, but especially with the current drought condi tions throughout Connecti cut, Walters said. Less turf lawn can also mean less lawn chemicals, exhaust emissions and noise levels created by motorized land scaping equipment, said de TheBear.overall aim of the Resi dential Green Awards pro gram is to highlight proper ties within the Mill River wa tershed that incorporate sus tainable landscaping. The program also promotes storm water management, such as rain gardens, rain barrels, and downspouts di rected to lawn areas. “In the end, everyone wins, because it helps in main taining cleaner water and a healthier watershed for all of us,” said deBear. Joy VanderLek, The Cheshire Citizen From A1 Award “By partnering with Cheshire on the creation of a new Emergency Operations Center, the state is able to help ensure that the town has the tools they need to support their residents,” Lamont said. The EOC will be set up in the basement of Town Hall, in a 600-square-foot room currently used as storage space. The space will be ful ly-equiped, giving the town’s Emergency Management Team a central space in which to work during a cri sis. At this time, emergency operations are run out of the training room at the police Accordingdepartment.to Town Manager Sean Kimball, the equip ment needed for a townwide emergency response is currently inadequate. Fur thermore, when officers are responding to calls and emergency personnel are working a crisis, this can cause logistical problems at that location. The funds will cover the installation of equipment, such as display monitors and audio and vi sual equipment.
Mill River Watershed Association President Ron Walters recently awarded Dell Kasinskas, of Cheshire, a Residential Green Award for her work on "shrinking the lawn."

TheCheshireCitizen|cheshirecitizen.comThursday,August11,2022 A17 dedicate their energy, expe rience, and attention as we fight these issues together. Public service, like garden ing, requires tremendous dedication, stamina, and Oursacrifice.District needs re silient, open-minded leader ship that will work every day to uplift people. These are the values I learned growing up in this community. These are the values that will encourage me over the next three months as I campaign to be your next state representa tive. These are the values we need in Hartford. Jack Fazzino is a Town Councilor in Berlin and the Democratic Party’s nominee in 83rd House District. From A5 Fazzino Next Street has had to change its curriculum to better suit older students. “Teaching a 22 year old re quires a different approach than teaching a 16 year old, and so we are constantly evolving our curriculum and our staff training...” Dufour said. Driving safety Ira Caplan, co-owner of Lib erty Driving School in Meri den, said the lack of younger students has not changed the way he teaches. Howev er, he has made his students more aware of the dangers of reckless driving. “There’s more reckless drivers out there right now,” Caplan said. “I think due to COVID there were less peo ple on the road and people were driving worse without any consequences. I am see ing more and more of that right Caplannow.”said he stresses the importance of defensive driving.
In 2020, there were about 189,950 young drivers in car crashes, according to the NHTSA. Young drivers, which are 15 to 20 years old, account for 8.5% of all drivers involved in fatal acci Thedents.Flood Law Firm, which is based in Waterbury, post ed on its website that the three types of crashes that teen drivers get in the most are rear-end collisions, road departures and left-turn col lisions. More than 68% of all teen crashes are caused by distracted driving. Drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 are three times more like ly to be in a car accident than someone 20 and over. However, in Connecticut, drivers between the ages of 21 and 25 are more at risk of being in a fatal crash. The percentage for this age group is 12.95%, while the percentage for 16 to 20 is 7.95%, according to statistics posted on The Flood Law Firm’s website, which cites data from the Connecticut Crash Data Repository. “I’m constantly warning the kids practically every class...this is what I saw a driver do that they shouldn’t be doing,’” said Risa Caplan, co-owner of Liberty Driving School. Alvarez said that he tells his students that it is important to be “aware of your sur roundings at all times.” “Don’t rely on technology, rely on your eyes,” Alvarez said.
