The calendar has flipped to August and dates are flashing along the Connecticut high school sports horizon like so many lighthouses. August 12-14 for football team activites. Aug. 21 for the start of football practice. Aug. 26 for the other fall sports. Also flashing: the increase in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant. Connecticut’s positivity rate has risen to over 2 percent and all of the state’s eight counties, as of Aug. 3, are considered to have “subSee CIAC, A71
Acclaimed music director gives lecture at Elim Park U. By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
Earlier this year, Elim Park University Dean Wayne Detzler was looking for a speaker for the Elim Park in-house college of continuing education. Detzler couldn’t believe his luck when resident Lora Lee Bell suggested he contact her son, David Bell. Mr. Bell is an internationally acclaimed director, choreographer, playwright and lyricist. His credits are extensive: Carnegie Hall, Broadway, Royal Albert Hall – to name just a few. He also direct-
Masks now required in municipal buildings Record-Journal staff
Anyone entering any of Cheshire’s municipal buildings is now required to wear a mask due to the increase in COVID-19 cases and positivity rates in town, according to an announcement last week from the town manager’s office. This new mandate went into effect Aug. 9 and is similar to edicts in a growing number of towns that are once again requiring masks inside municipal buildings.
To Detzler’s delight, Bell accepted his invitation and signed to do a two-part lecture on “The Birth of Musical Theater.”
While Gov. Ned Lamont signed an executive order Aug. 5 permitting local leaders to mandate masks in public places, such as grocery stores and restaurants, few municipalities have gone that far yet. New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker announced Aug. 5 that the city would once again be requiring mask use in public places.
“History is something I love,” said Bell, addressing the Nelson Hall audience during the June event. “History so often can become a list of dates and events

Youthful misdeeds our kids better not try By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
How many of us have stopped in our tracks when thinking back to some of the crazy things we got into when we were kids. “We should all be dead,” is my first thought. I am sure others have had the same thought cross their mind. Well, how many of these adults, now parents themselves, would be absolutely livid if their kids did half the wild things they did?
days in elementary school, where she did not want to go to class. “My Mom was a nurse, so unless the excuse was legitimately medical, I would never get to stay home,” she said. “So, I came up with a very stupid, but ingenious solution. I took a tiny red poison ivy leaf and ran it across my upper eyelid the night before. [My] eyes closed shut for a day, and surprisingly not much itching.” She added, “Don't tell the kids.”
I decided to go to the wellspring. I asked my fellow community members in the online forum. I was very surprised when I got answers. I thought I was the only one to have done things like gone swimming in the local reservoir when I was in middle school or snuck into an old abandoned house. Dumb, right? Yes. There’s a million more I could tell you, but it seems I have plenty of company who also want to share.
I’m not sure if she means don’t tell her kids about it or don’t tell any kids. Either way, mum’s the word. From the department of “don’t do that” is this tidbit from someone who learned her lesson the hard way. “When I was younger than five, I stuck my pinkie in the handles of a tricycle. Then I was unable to pull it out. The fire department was See Joy, A4

In this case, the names have been changed to protect the guilty, but I guarantee these are 100 percent, locallysourced, authentic tales of youthful misdeeds. Our first miscreant told this story: “I was a kid, lived on Country Club Road, and a couple friends and I were playing in a sand dune on the golf course that used to be on Country Club Road. We were playing with Trolls and decided to pretend that their ‘little troll village’ was on fire. Only problem was when we lit the match the fire got out of control and burned a large spot of the golf course. The fire department had to come put the fire out. That was the first (and only) time I got a ride home in a police car.”

Back in the 1980s, we get a recollection from a woman who said her father “inherited” an enormous station wagon from his company's owner. “It looked like a hearse. The exterior was painted all black and it had a blood red interior. The owner used it as a limo for his giant sheepdogs. Dad nicknamed that thing The Battlestar. He would let myself and my two siblings lay down in the back and he would swerve the vehicle back and forth all the way

across the road, causing us to roll back and forth in the way back area of the wagon. It was hysterical. And so much fun. But nowadays, he would probably get pulled over for reckless driving, child endangerment and a slew of other offenses.”
And still another time. “We tied tin cans to my aunt’s dog’s tail. Apparently the dog’s tail was curved and the kids wanted to straighten it out. When the aunt called the dog home, his tin can tail made a lot of noise going down the street.”
I believe that assessment is correct.
We sure had some good times, didn’t we?
Here’s still another young mischief-maker and her tales of misbehaving, which she said was due in part to being raised on a farm. “We were always outdoors. Life was never boring. There were three of us girls ... We tied our cousin from New Jersey up to a tree in the woods. When it was lunch and he did not show up, we had to tell the adults where he was ...” Another time, she recalled, “We filled a peach basket full of hay and strung it over our aunt’s backdoor. When she opened the door, the basket tipped and the hay went all over her ...”

Police: Suspects fire shot after being confronted about break-ins By Lauren Sellew Record-Journal staff
on Maple Avenue.
Police are reminding residents that people who break into vehicles are potentially armed and dangerous, and that extreme caution should be used. If anyone sees criminal activity, they are asked to immediately notify police without alerting the suspects.
The man pulled up next to the suspects and verbally confronted them, Sutherland said. The suspect vehicle began to drive away, and one of the passengers fired a shot at the man’s vehicle. He was not injured, but there was damage to his vehicle.
CHESHIRE — Police are investigating after a resident reported having his car shot at by suspects he said were breaking into cars. Police responded to the incident around 1:40 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, Lt. Jeffrey Sutherland said in a release. A man, who told officers he saw suspects in his neighborhood breaking into cars, drove around looking for them and found them driving north
Anyone with information about the shooting incident is asked to contact Detective Kerry Nastri at 203-2715533.
The suspect vehicle was described as a gray or silver Subaru Legacy sedan. There were four men in the vehicle at the time, three of which were wearing hooded sweatshirts.

Town Councilor Jinks brings his school restructuring plan before the council Record-Journal staff
Councilor Jim Jinks recently presented his “Casertano Field Campus” school modernization plan to the Cheshire Town Council. The Casertano Fields Campus Phase One proposal would look to combine elements of the primary and secondary School Modernization Committee proposals by focusing on the construction of a new Chapman School as well as a brandnew 6-through-8-grade middle school, which could be built on the Casertano property located off of Jarvis Street. The current Dodd Middle School would be renovated, but kept as a second middle school, while also being reconfigured to accommodate community spaces and offices.
Doolittle and Norton Schools also would be renovated under the proposal. In this new plan, presented by Jinks at the council's July 28 special meeting, he proposed that the town relocate the Cheshire Parks and Recreation Department as well as the Yellow House to the new community office space added to Dodd. He said this would generate some capital by taking those buildings offline and incorporating them into the middle school.
Deputy Financial Director Jim Jaskot and Town Manager Sean Kimball presented the five-year capital expenditure plan for Phase One of Scenario 6, the primary option presented by the SMC. Phase One calls for the construction of two new elementary schools that would replace Chapman and Norton, as well as the demolition of Darcey School, for a cost of $87.4 million.
If the community were to move forward with Phase One of that proposal, it is estimated that by the year Since April, the council has 2032 the average taxpayer been focused on the primary would see an increase of recommendation of the $416.63 per resident, with School Modernization Com- the mill rate rising from 2.76 mittee, referred to as Sceto 6.0 mills. nario 6. The panel heard more details on the proposal The overall cost of Scenario during the meeting, includ6, including phased-in work ing the impact on taxes. over a period of years on all
of Cheshire’s school buildings, was estimated to be $427.91 million on the low end and $540.24 million on the high end when the plan was presented by the SMC back in April. The cost to the town, after all state reimbursements are taken into account, would be between $258-and-$329 million. Jinks said his proposal would better address the expected increase in enrollment over the next few years, with the need to have a 6-through-8-grade middle school, all for a lower cost than Scenario 6. The new middle school would have a capacity for about 550 students and the renovated Dodd could house about 600. He projected the cost to the town for Phase One of his
plan to be approximately $75.5 million, less that the SMC’s primary Scenario 6 proposal, which calls for two new elementary schools and would cost the town $87.4 million. Other features of the “Casertano Fields Campus” plan include demolishing the Humiston building and renovating Cheshire High School. While the Jink's plan comes after the SMC has already vetted, voted on and brought forth its recommendation, he and Chairman Rob Oris suggested that it should be given a chance to be reviewed by the SMC. Jinks said the next step will be to present his plan to the Board of Education Planning Committee to discuss whether or not they will reconvene the SMC.

Home gardeners should update their approach to many techniques By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

Morin is a graduate of the School of Professional Horticulture at New York’s Botanical Gardens and a 30-plus year gardener for the City of Hartford. She’s the city’s tree warden, as well. Also, Morin has served as president of the Suburban Garden Club of Cheshire and is a longGardener Elizabeth Morin in her Cheshire garden. time member of the Connecticut Joy VanderLek, The Cheshire Citizen Horticultural Society. Gardening philosophies have changed over the years, said Morin. She cautions that what you may have learned in the past, might not hold up today. The old adage, “Plant a 50-cent plant in a $5 dollar hole,” was a reminder to gardeners that they needed to add compost and other amendments before planting. The new philosophy, said Morin, is to dig a wide hole and don’t bother with amendments, as the plant won’t adjust well when those run out or its roots grow past the good stuff.
Gardening tips from Elizabeth Morin n Do
not use landscape fabric or plastic. It can turn into a disaster with time. n Do not overwater. It’s better to let the plant dry out a little. Overwatering creates root rot and invites diseases and pests. n Do not water your lawn when it is raining. n Don’t volcano mulch your trees. It is not good for them. n In most cases, it is not necessary to amend your soil. n Have your soil tested by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. n Do your research, join local garden clubs, the Connecticut Horticultural Society and visit local independent nurseries for assistance.
When it comes to planting a tree, Morin said it’s best to dig a hole that is “wider than deep,” as opposed to the old way that advised to dig a hole twice as deep as wide. After placing the tree in the hole, Morin backfills halfway with soil from the hole, waters, then fills the rest of the way. Another change in the approach to planting is in regards to timing. “Spring starts earlier now. Memorial Day was the rule-of-thumb, now it’s early May,” she said.
on things.” She suggests frequent walks in the garden. If needed, and weeds are small, take what is called a long-handled hoe and scrape. When weeds are large, Morin will pull them by hand, dry out the roots, and leave them in the garden. “If they are bad (invasive) weeds, do not compost them,” she warned. Overall, weeds dry out faster if it’s hot and sunny, but they’re easier to pull after it rains, she said.
Generally, the best time to plant is spring and fall when nights are cool and the days are warm, so plants can put their energy into their root systems. Fall is also a good time, because that’s when things are on sale, quipped Morin. “You can plant in the summer, but you have to be diligent about watering,” she said.
When it comes to home gardening, some common mistakes are “jumping in too fast, buying too much and placing plants in the wrong space,” said Morin. It pays to do research and make a plan.
When it comes to weeding, Morin said to be proactive: “Keep an eye
When landscaping with a variety of plants – a combination of shrubs, trees and flowers – the foliage and different kinds of bark can make for an interesting look. Also, the variety helps to ensure
continuous blooms and a successful garden plan, said Morin. Morin offers consultations. She said she wants to help homeowners “buy the right plant for the right place.” She will walk a yard with the homeowner and make suggestions for plants and placement. That makes it easier for the homeowner, whether they are planting themselves or using a contractor. “I will even go to the nursery with clients to pick out plants,” Morin said.

CUTTING EDGE LASER TECHNOLOGY Laser surgery on soft tissue eliminates the need for scalpels and sutures to address soft tissue conditions. With this advanced technology, we can perform frenectomies (tongue and lip tie release) in affected newborns as well as children and adults. The laser can also be used in removing soft tissue lesions, and in the alleviation of canker sores.

Gaylord awards three educational scholarships Gaylord Specialty Healthcare, a nonprofit rehabilitationfocused health care system based in Wallingford, recently presented three educational scholarships to staff. Sara Olsen, a per diem rehab therapy aide for Gaylord Physical Therapy in Cheshire, was awarded the Kornguth Family Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2019 by Phyllis Kornguth, a grateful patient who observed that many Gaylord staff were working to advance themselves — and their careers — by pursing higher education. Olsen, a North Branford resident, is pursuing her physician assistant degree at Duke University. Wallingford resident Alexandra Fernandes, unit secretary on Lyman 2, was presented with the Dolly Parisi Scholarship. The scholarship was created to honor Parisi, Gaylord’s former director of nurses, upon her retirement in honor of her continuous commitment to encouraging her staff to keep the patient at the center of all they do. Fernandez is pursuing a nursing degree at Sacred Heart.

Nor, with the lessons learned from 2020-21, does it feel unprepared. “We have anticipated that we would be managing some elements of COVID at least through another year, but we feel we have a lot more information, a lot more data this year from the sports that we were able to play last year, and that we can safely compete,” CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini said last week.
In essence, the CIAC was piloting a boat in the fog. “It’s a good analogy. I think the difference this year is we have GPS to help manage our way through the fog,” Lungarini said. “We have data. We do know some things that were effective in mitigating the spread, both before we had vaccines and when vaccines were available.” Like last year, the CIAC will continue to issue safety protocols to its member schools. “We have good information that shows those strategies were successful,” said Lungarini.

MIDDLEFIELD — Over 300,000 sunflowers are set to bloom at Lyman Orchards for the 15th year, bringing families to the only sunflower maze in the state.
Families are invited to visit the sunflower maze and answer trivia questions to get through to the end of the maze. Each answer to the question guides you left or right with all the correct answers posted at the end.

bloom is Aug. 6 to Aug. 20. The maze is popular every year, especially for maternity and engagement photos. Melissa Uriarte and her family from East Hartford usually visit Lyman Orchards to go fruit picking and visited the maze on a recent Tuesday morning for the second
year. “During the summer we try to find things to do outdoors with the kids,” Uriarte said, “We don’t come here every year but we have been here a few times for strawberry and peach picking. We also go to the Apple Barrel.” Uriarte’s son Liam Uriarte said the maze was cool and a lot of fun but confusing as the family tried to find their way out.
The maze is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for children ages 4-12 and free for children ages 3 and under. The maze is open until Aug. 31. John Lyman, owner of the orchard, said last year’s sunflower maze was “decent” but he is optimistic going into this year. “We’re looking forward to a really good year,” Lyman said. “The flowers are looking really good this year. We opened Saturday and so far we’ve had a really good turnout.” Lyman Orchards donates $1 of each admission charge to Connecticut Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. The website said the Lyman Orchards family wants “children battling cancer to reach for the stars and never give up hope.”
Massachusetts resident Ann May and her children Edgar, 5, and Charles, 2, were dressed in flower shirts and a dress as they successfully reached the end of the sunflower maze at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield. May was in Connecticut visiting her mother, Charlene Dougiello, of Trumbull. Essential gear for a road trip with children By Caitlin Houston Special to the Record-Journal
Raise your hand if you enjoy taking road trips with kids? For me – they are fun but extremely stressful. There are essentials for a road trip with kids that can make your travel more enjoyable though. It is so important to be prepared for anything – car sickness, potty accidents, hunger, thirst, and boredom.
If you’re going on a road trip with kids, don’t forget these 10 essentials for any kind of

1. Grocery store plastic bags
Caitlin Houston, special to the Record-Journal
I always save our grocery store plastic bags to use for trash or soiled clothes on a family road trip (or plane ride). It is easier to toss a vomit covered shirt into a plastic bag, tie up the top, and place it on the floor until you get home.
2. Wet wipes/ antibacterial wipes From dirty hands to juice box spills, it is helpful to have a big container of wet wipes to clean any messes your children may create. I also stock up on Lysol Wipes for the big messes, like vomit, and hand sanitizer for quick disinfecting after a bathroom break at a rest stop.
proves of for public restrooms.
4. Insulated water bottles Bringing along your own water for thirsty travelers will save you money (and time, from stopping). We like a variety of insulated water bottles – from the 10 oz. Contigo, to the 12 oz. Camelback, to a 12 oz. Frozen themed Thermos, the girls have tried them all. I fill the bottles with ice and water before we leave the house and pack them in a small cooler on the floor in the backseat where I can easily reach them and pass them out
3. Portable toilet seat

We took our first long road trip with our daughters recently. It took us 9.5 hours to drive to Ohio and 10 hours to drive back. I would like to say the trip was uneventful, but during the last hour of our drive, Annabelle vomited all over herself, her toys, and her car seat. Thankfully I had plastic bags ready for our oldest, who gets car sick, as well has cleaning wipes.

Essentials needed for a road trip with kids.
8. Pillow and blanket We like to leave for our road trips while the children are still sleeping early in the morning or late at night. My daughters prefer their own special pillow and blanket in the car (and at hotels), so we always bring our own on a road trip.

Caitlin Houston,
5. Snacks
special to the
Another way to save money from overpriced gas station snacks is to bring your own. I buy snacks for road trips in bulk – Goldfish, fig bars (our favorite), popcorn, apple sauce pouches. Whatever your kids like you should bring in the car.
Record-Journal
9. Activities Most kids like to watch a movie on a long road trip – so we obviously bring along a portable DVD player and iPad. However, Annabelle can become car sick more quickly when she is staring at a screen, so I have a backpack filled with activities: stickers, coloring books, colored pencils (less messy), Imagine Ink books, a baby doll, Barbies, etc.
6. First Aid kit Accidents can happen on road trips – from the pesky paper cut to the sister squabble ending in a scratch, it is always important to have Band-Aids and ointment on hand. I have a first aid kit with 121 pieces for any scenario. It’s lightweight and easy to bring along on a road trip.
One item I haven’t purchased yet is a travel activity tray – with pockets and a flat top. It seems genius for kids in carseats.
7. Change of clothes
10. Headphones
If your children end up covered in food or water, or perhaps you don’t make it to a rest stop in time, it is so important to have a change of clothes easily accessible in the car. I pack a change of clothes in my diaper bag every time I leave the house – underwear, socks, shorts/ pants, a shirt, and a sweatshirt.

Lecture From A1
that we’re not involved in.” His presentation covered the years 1900 to 1942 and took the audience along on a nostalgic trip, which he peppered with interesting nuggets, including behindthe-scenes information. There was always music in theatre, said Bell, recalling the minstrels in the Dark Ages, for example. The turn of the century, however, was “an extraordinary time for music in this country,” he said. The cultural fusion of Black artists, immigrants such as the eastern European Jews and those Americans of “lower-class” created the “book musical,” where song and story are woven together. This is the final musical theatre form we have embraced, said Bell. At the turn of the century, musical stories “looked backwards or forwards.” he said. In New York City, shows were in Yiddish and German, for example. People were embracing their roots, nostalgic for what they left behind. At the same time, writers looked forward and made progressive stories in the musical form. Authors like Horatio Alger gave vision to hard work that paid off in prosperity, community and belonging – the American Dream. The musical as we know it now, did not happen overnight. It was “a reassembling of different techniques that got better and better,” said Bell. And so, the year 1943 and “Oklahoma” mark what is considered the beginning of the modern musical. Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hart, Irving Berlin; they were trying to FACEBOOK.COM/ RECORDJOURNAL NEWSPAPER TWITTER.COM/ RECORD_JOURNAL INSTAGRAM.COM/ RECORDJOURNAL
speak the truth, Bell explained: The truth to them, the truth of the American Dream, using this unique pairing of music and story. From the “theatrical chaos” that existed at the beginning of the 1900s, a few transitions were of note that led to the modern musical. The American musical begins to form as “Little Johnnie Jones,” opens on Broadway. The simple Horatio Alger production’s 1907 version is the best of the iterations, said Bell, who played a clip of the song “Give My Regards to Broadway,” an iconic song from the play. “Yankee Doodle Dandy” is another George M. Cohen time-tested song from the musical. Out of the ranks of vaudeville, Cohen, while not a good actor, became good at writing “what was more akin to storytelling with music that looks like the music theatre we would recognize today,” said Bell. “He became the greatest known performer on Broadway.”

Irving Berlin started as a song plugger, selling songs to vaudeville productions. The shows then went on the road, and “suddenly the sheet music would have value,” said Bell. Families would buy them to sing around the piano. Berlin we know today as the most prolific American songwriter ever, Bell said. He wrote best-selling songs such as “White Christmas,” and in 1911 “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” was the first million-seller for sheet music. The 1920s produced the Harlem Renaissance and late in the decade, a time when various cultural groups spoke on areas of common interest. Cole Porter talked to George Gershwin about his lackluster record sales. Gershwin urged Porter to investigate the Jewish “blue note.” Quoting the Eastman School of Music, and Marvin Gaye, music that “falls between the cracks of the piano keys” is an approximation of the blue note. Afterwards, Bell said Porter began writing songs like “Begin

the Beguine” and others embracing the blue note. “It actually changed his writing and made him infinitely more successful.”
In the years leading to 1943, there’s an astonishing amount of activity in entertainment: “Anything Goes,” with Ethel Merman, Al Jolson in the first talking moAt this time another group in tion picture, "The Jazz a small off Broadway theatre Singer," and Ethel Williams was formed. Bewildered and Bothered” and “Blue Moon.” The year was 1927 and 150 shows opened on Broadway, “Oklahoma” is considered 50 of them were musicals. “It the birth of the modern muwas an incredible petri dish sical.
