Committee to study modernizing, closing of school buildings By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff

Callie Fritz, a senior at Cheshire High School, didn’t use the word vaping to describe the use of electronic nicotine products during a forum at Town Hall.

More than 30 residents are interested in joining a new study group charged with developing a plan for modernizing the town’s school buildings.

She used the word “JUULing,” a reference to a popular maker of those devices.

The committee is tasked with presenting a school facilities plan to the Town Council and Board of Education by Sept. 15, 2020.

Fritz was speaking on a panel that included state Sen. Mary Abrams, DMeriden, state Rep. Liz Linehan, DCheshire, state Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services Commissioner Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, and other state and local officials.

The committee would consist of 11 members — three of them from the Town Council, three from the Board of Education and five representatives from the public.

“As someone who has tried to intervene, we need to focus on helping and not shaming them,” Fritz said during the Oct. 10 event.

The Town Council last month approved a resolution to form the committee by an 8 to 1 vote. Thomas Ruocco cast the lone opposing vote.

Abrams, who serves as co-chair of the legislature’s Public Health Committee, referenced reports of suspected vaping-related lung illnesses, which have included some deaths.

Councilor Sylvia Nichols said she was delighted so many people are interested in joining.

Jim Jinks, a Democratic party candidate for Town Council, said he hopes if he is elected to the council he can also be a member of the committee. “That’s an important thing to me,” Jinks said. “If the council and the (Board of Education) work together that is definitely something I am in favor of.”

Linehan, who co-moderated the forum, said state lawmakers hope to draft new legislation to further regulate electronic nicotine products next year. Recent legislation raised the minimum age for purchasing tobacco, including vaping products, to 21 years old. Abrams and other speakers noted that when electronic nicotine products were first introduced more than a decade ago, they were marketed as devices meant to help adult cigarette smokers quit. “But I'm not absolutely convinced it is a less harmful product,” said Abrams.

“We want to be sure they are curious about things that are healthy, rather than things that are harmful,” Gadd said. Gadd explained that she and other administrators have taken action, including locking several student bathrooms during the school day and installing “vape detection” devices. Bryte Johnson, director of government relations and advocacy for the American Cancer Society’s Connecticut Cancer Action Center, says the rise in use poses a lot of concerns.

Coast Guard murals Tony Falcone: Creating the Art for the United States Coast Guard Historical Murals Project, Saturday, Oct. 19, 2 p.m. Connecticut Artist Tony Falcone will share his artistic process in the creation of the oversized, detailed and historically accurate oil paintings (each approximately 9’ x 11’) that comprise the Historical Murals Project commissioned by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association, Class of ‘62. Falcone’s paintings tell the story of the U.S. Coast Guard from 1940 through Sept. 11, 2001 (“9/ 11”), depicting both its recognized role in daring maritime rescue operations as well as its relatively unknown but critical role in major United States military engagements. During his presentation, Tony will focus particularly on the process he follows in the creation of several of these exhibited artworks, including his 3-D models, on-site research and photography, use of re-enactors, sketches and patterns, as well as the stages of the oil paintings themselves. Laughter: RX Laughter:RX for Survival, with Joyce Saltman, Saturday, Oct. 26, 2 p.m. This seminar will deal with the physiological benefits of laughter, studies on the mind-body connection, and practical (plus some not-sopractical!) suggestions on ways to bring more laughter into your life. The lecture combines scientific

data with comedy, in an effort to provide a mirth-provoking educational experience. Joyce Saltman is a professor Emeritus of Special Education at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven and a former Cheshire resident. Her experience in the areas of education, therapy, and comedy has provided an outstanding background for her research on “The Therapeutic Value of Laughter.” Since 1983, when Joyce began lecturing on “Laughter,” she has been interviewed by national radio and TV. Her dynamic seminars and articles, always peppered with humor,

address such topics as dealing with difficult people, laughter as therapy, parenting, and relationships. Her goal is to enlighten, educate, and entertain while the audience laughs. Joyce has been speaking on laughter and related uplifting topics since 1983. Register online at cheshirelibrary.org or call 203-272-2245.

Autumn floral design program

Heather Potter with one of her designs.

The October Cheshire Garden Club meeting recently took place at Elim Park in the Conservatory. Garden club members as well as 25 Elim Park residents participated in an autumn design program by floral designer Heather Potter who used flowers and branches from her own garden. Potter fashioned several center pieces for the dining table or for placement on a credenza. The audience took part in a drawing to win floral creations by Potter.

HERE ARE THIS WEEK’S MALE & FEMALE NOMINEES .

A13

..........

MICHAEL BARBERINO

GRACE KEAVENEY

Heading into this year’s Wallingford cross country meet, Sheehan coach Frank Mohr remarked that Michael Barberino would be a runner to watch. Good call. After coming on strong as a junior at the end of 2018, Barberino has blossomed as a senior in 2019, and on Oct. 4 he won his first varsity race to lead the Titans to victory over rival Lyman Hall. Barberino blazed a 16:54 over the 3.1-mile course at Wharton Brook, edging teammate Ethan Venoit by 2 seconds.

Grace Keaveney carved her name into the Cheshire field hockey scoring archives last week. And once she did, the senior got busy. Keaveney notched her first varsity goal in Friday’s 8-0 win at North Haven. She also set up two other goals. Then, on Saturday, Keaveney had Cheshire’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss at Norwalk. All told, Keaveney has two goals and three assists for the Rams, who topped Lyman Hall 7-0 on Monday afternoon to improve to 7-5.

DILLON KOHL

MORGAN KICKLIGHTER

Watch Dillon Kohl run and it becomes quickly apparent: He’s got speed, he’s got vision and he’s got balance. For a second straight week, the Southington senior running back put all three into play and rushed for more than 200 yards. Following up on a 219-yard game at Hall, Kohl collected 247 yards and three touchdowns in last Friday’s 44-6 home win over Manchester, including a 76-yard breakaway. Kohl now has 768 yards and 10 TDs for the 4-1 Blue Knights.

Junior Morgan Kicklighter is losing none of her kick for the Maloney cross country team. Last Friday, for the third straight year, Kicklighter won the girls race at the Meriden City Championships. She covered the 3.1-mile course at Hubbard Park in 22:28, one second faster than her winning time a year ago. Runner-up this year was Kicklighter’s Maloney teammate Savannah Vasquez (22:56) as the Spartans swept Platt and Wilcox Tech to take the team title.

ROBERTO SALAS

ELISE RICHARDSO

Platt running back Roberto Salas is fast closing in on his second straight 1,000-yard season. After his 264yard performance Saturday in Newington, the junior now has 938 yards at the midpoint of the year. The 264 yards were his single-game high for the season, though Salas did put up 216 at Wethersfield and 203 at Notre Dame-West Haven. Those were losses. With Salas scoring 3 TDs in Newington, the Panthers, now 3-2, posted a critical 35-33 victory.

The Lyman Hall swim team has a nice pipeline of talent flowing. Every year, it seems, a stellar freshman joins a troupe of proven upper classmen. A year ago, it was Caroline Krawec. This year, it’s Elise Richardson, who has won 10 individual events and been part of 11 first-place relays. Primarily a sprinter, Richardson has taken three 50-yard freestyles and four 100s. She has also stretched out, winning races in the 100 butterfly, 200 IM and 500 free.
