CHS boys raise Class L banner
By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staffHARTFORD The title drought is over in Cheshire as the No. 1 Rams defeated No. 2 Xavier 3-1 in the Class L boys soccer final at a cold and slick Trinity Health Sta dium on Sunday night. Cheshire (16-3-1) hoisted its second-ever state title tro phy and its first since 1988 behind first-half goals from William Stearns and Samir Dishnica. Kevi Sulollari headed home Cheshire’s third goal in the second half.
“This is very special,” said Cheshire coach Artur Bran co, whose Rams fell in the Class LL final on the same field a year ago to Farming ton, 3-2. “I’ve been going at this for 29 years. This is my first one and I’m very happy.
I’m ecstatic for every one, including myself.”
The Rams led 2-1 at the half. Cheshire took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute with a running header by
Stearns. The assist was served into the box by Alex Clark.
Sulollari padded Cheshire’s lead with a second-half goal to secure the title.

“Samir has been great all season and he found me in the box and I put it home,” Sulollari said.

“I am thrilled at the num ber of participants and the number of guns turned in at Cheshire’s first gun buy back. These guns will no longer be able to cause harm or death. They will never fall into the hands of criminals, or into the hands of someone having thoughts of suicide, or cause the accidental death of a curious child,” said Dr. Pina Violano, co-organizer of the event and co-founder of Swords to Plowshares Northeast.

FROM PUBLIC WORKS
Winter weather tips, protocols
As winter approaches, the Cheshire Public Works Department asks residents for their cooperation in keeping our roads safe by following these regulations and suggestions.
Parking: Parking ban announcements will be made through the local media and on the town website, CheshireCT.org. During a ban, Town Ordinance prohibits parking on the street. Any vehicle so parked may be towed. Basketball hoops and other private property should be removed from the rights-of-way.
Sidewalks: Per Town Ordinance, property owners are responsible to clear snow and ice from adjacent sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of the snowfall or precipitation event. Residents are encouraged to wait un til town plows have pushed snow back to the curbline before clearing sidewalks and driveway aprons.
Priority roads: The first priority is to create travel lanes on through streets. Residents who live on a cul-de-sac or lesser-traveled road are asked to be patient with the re moval of snow from these areas. Following the end of the storm, all roads will be plowed back to the curbline. This pushback
allows room for snow from future snow storms, provides better access to mailboxes, and opens up storm drains for melting snow. Note: State roads (Routes 10, 42, 68, 70) are plowed by the Department of Trans portation, not the town.

Mailboxes:According to Town Ordinance, the Public Works Department does not re place mailboxes that are displaced by snow or slush from plowing. Occasionally a plow strikes a mailbox. The damage must be re ported within 48 hours of the end of the storm. Contact the Public Works Depart ment to have your claim investigated. The Town Council Resolution can be viewed at

The link between diabetes and oral health explained
From the Chesprocott Health District:
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221125145804-0fe6eb93cc97956d2ddfad7b13b215cc/v1/e20a8f00b4f70b77e2d3909b47fceb24.jpeg)
If you have diabetes, it’s im portant to know how your whole body can be affected by your blood glucose, or blood sugar levels. In the case of your oral health, if your blood glucose levels are too high that means there is
also too much glucose in your saliva. This can lead to additional plaque on your teeth and possibly even tooth decay and gum dis ease if it’s not taken care of.
Managing your diabetes ef fectively and engaging in good dental health habits can help ensure your mouth
and the rest of your body stay as healthy as possible.
Step 1: Control your blood glucose levels
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221125145804-0fe6eb93cc97956d2ddfad7b13b215cc/v1/5b8989f44004d740a5ae3a62692114e5.jpeg)
Follow these tips and your doctor’s orders to keep your blood glucose at a healthy level: Eat a well-balanced, healthy diet; take your medicine; stay active.
Step 2: Create good dental health habits
Start working these habits into your routine, if you haven’t already, to keep your mouth feeling great: Brush your teeth at least twice a day; use toothpaste with flu oride; use a toothbrush with soft bristles and replace it every three months; floss

your teeth daily; check your mouth often for swollen or bleeding gums; tell your dentist if you have diabetes.

It’s good to see your dentist twice a year, as they may be able to spot early signs of gum disease and help you take steps to address it.

House fire leaves 4 people displaced
By Ben Baker Record-Journal staffCHESHIRE Fire engulfed a two-story, single fami ly home on Devonwood Drive Friday morning, Nov. 18, leaving four people dis placed and causing signifi cant structural damage to the house.
First responders arrived on the scene at approximately 10:35 a.m. after a call was placed by a resi dent who discovered an up stairs bedroom caught fire.
On Nov. 18, Fire Chief Jack Casner said the source of the blaze was still undeter mined, but added the de partment ruled out arson and described the incident as “certainly not suspicious.”
Casner said the second floor and roof of the four-bed room home were severely damaged. Occupants will be unable to return to the house until the anticipated reconstruction process takes place, he said.
“There was so much damage to the bedroom where it
started that they’re recon structing the scene as we speak,” Casner said. “There’s construction that’s going to have to take place before [residents] can reoccupy the home”
No serious injuries were re ported. Only the caller who contacted the depart ment was on site when fire fighters arrived.
Casner said Cheshire re ceived assistance from the Southington Fire Depart ment, which arrived as part of an existing mutual aid policy between the towns.
“Oftentimes during the day, combination and volunteer departments have a hard time getting staffing, so we call for assistance from an other agency, just in case, ” Casner said. “It's like an insurance policy.”
Casner was unsure when fire marshals will obtain enough evidence draw a definitive conclusion as to the cause of the fire.
The fire marshal was not available for comment.

School districts prepare for free meal funding to expire
By Jessica Simms Record-Journal staff![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221125145804-0fe6eb93cc97956d2ddfad7b13b215cc/v1/d98b4ed63220259ddb863cfd53fe4e41.jpeg)
Funding provided by the Schools Meals Assistance Revenue for Transition (SMART) will run out by the end of the month for many school districts. This means that students who don’t qualify for free and reduced meals will need to pay for school meals.
Both Wallingford Public Schools and Southington Public Schools administra tors project that their funds will be depleted by Nov. 30, meaning starting Dec. 1, the school districts will return to paid meals.
For Cheshire Public Schools, Superintendent Jeff Solan said he projects their funds will last until the end of De cember.
The SMART program went into effect in August once the state distributed $30 mil lion in American Rescue Plan Act funding to local school districts to allow them to be able to continue to offer free meals to all stu dents until the funding ran out.

Wallingford received a total of $553,513, Cheshire, $688,000 and Southington $639,258. These total amounts were determined by a formula, according to John Frassinelli, division di rector of school, health, nu trition and family services for the state.
However, now that these funds are running out, dis trict administrators have or will notify families soon, preparing them for the switch back to paid meals.

Jennifer Mellitt, director of business and finances for Southington Public Schools, said the district already filed their notice to conclude the funding and have notified parents that they will be re turning to paid meals.

“We also encouraged par ents to complete the free and reduced lunch applica tion which is on our web site,” Mellitt said.
Mellitt also said that at the Nov. 10, board of education
meeting, the board members voted to increase the price of school meals by 25 cents due to the rising costs of food and supplies. This will be effective Dec. 1 and for both breakfast and lunch at all Southington schools.
“We did have some discus sion to see if the 25 cent in crease would actually be enough to support the cost of the program and Ms. Mel litt did state that with the federal reimbursement rates and the profit from the prior year, we should be able to operate at this price point,” said James Chrzanowski, board member, at the Nov. 10 meeting. “We will be monitoring those closely.”
Boys
“Today, we had to come and go hard and dominate the midfield and play our game,” Sulollari added.
It was all Rams for much of the first half. In the opening minute, Ellis Sulollari had a corner kick turned away by the Falcons defense. Colin Brown had a shot in the 6th minute that was cor ralled by Xavier keeper Spencer Misenti.
After Stearns staked Cheshire to a 1-0 lead, Ryan Markarian had a shot off of a corner kick in the 18th and Jack Markarian had a shot off a corner stopped by Misenti as it was all Cheshire in the early going.
Dishnica beat two defenders and then lured the goalie out, made a move and put it in the open net as Cheshire went up 2-0 in the 28th minute. “I got a touch past a defender and the keeper came out and I got a touch by him and I put it in, and it felt amazing,” said Dishnica, the SCC Player of the Year. “Last year, coming up short, this was our first one since ’88. It feels great to get this one for coach.”
Xavier (18-3-2) responded three minutes later with a goal from its leading scorer, Mario Milardo, in the 31st minute with a great shot in the middle of box from straight on. Diego
Canellas provided the assist as the Falcons garnered some much-needed mo mentum.
Sulollari opened the second half with a clean look fro 20 yards in minute 42. Canellas countered with a header that sailed just over the crossover in the 43rd minute as both teams had good chances in the opening minutes of the second half.
Stearns drew a foul in the 45th minute and the Rams set up a free kick just outside the box on the right corner. Dishnica booted it on net and the ball was headed in by Sulollari as Cheshire went up, 3-1. “It was incredi ble,” Dishnica said. “We got a free kick in a really good spot. Set-pieces have been good for us and we capital ized.”
Nolan Kappus made a diving save on a Xavier scoring op portunity in the 63rd minute. Kappus then made a diving save on Aidan Driscoll in the 70th minute.
Though SCC rivals, Cheshire and Xavier did not play each other this season prior to Sunday. Last year, they col lided in the Class LL semifi nals, with the Rams win ning 2-1 on penalty kicks (85). The Cheshire boys went on to lose in last year’s final to Farmington.

Cheshire and Xavier meet four times in 2021 and both moved down to Class L this fall.
Dishnica, who was later named the game MVP, said the team was fueled all sea son by the loss in the finals last season. “That loss was all we were thinking about,” Dishnica said. “We knew we had to go out there and work harder, and to get here feels amazing.”

Cheshire’s title quest started with a 6-2 win over Avon in the second round The Rams then ousted SCC foes Notre Dame-West Haven (6-0) in the quarters and Guilford (3-2) in the semis.
Xavier edged RHAM in the second round 1-0 (3-1 in PKs) before beating Pom peraug 2-0 in the quarters and Middletown 5-1 in the semifinals. Prior to Sunday, Xavier’s lone state final ap pearance and state champi onship was in 1995 in a 2-1 win over Simsbury in LL. “I’m just very happy for ev eryone, ” Branco said. “This is not just a title for me, but this title goes beyond the coaching staff and belongs to the Town of Cheshire. This is for Cheshire”
Kevi Sulollari said the Rams wanted to get this title for Branco. “He deserves this; he’s coached for so long,” Sulollari said. “He’s so pas sionate about this sports. We should have won it last year for him, but failures always need to success. He de serves this. He’s a great guys with great morals and re spect for everyone. He’sa great coach.”

Cheshire’s undefeated sea son and state title aspira tions were dashed in the fi nal round, 4-1, by the No. 3 Wreckers, whose nickname never seemed more apro pos.
Sophomore Annabel Ed wards, working in combina tion with junior Evelyn Chu dowsky, scored all three of those Staples goals to start the second half.
Freshman Natalie Chu
dowsky got the Wreckers out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first stanza, us ing deft footwork to create space and get off a curling shot to the corner from the top of the box.
Freshman Abby Sink scored for Cheshire, finishing a cross after never-say-die work on the right wing by senior Haley Shaw. But, by then, Staples led 4-0 and on ly 10 minutes remained to be played on a cold after noon that slipped into even colder night.
Cheshire’s season, which in cluded the SCC conference championship, still goes down in the history books. It just goes down at 21-1-1.
“I don’t think that this loss can take anything away from what the girls have done all season to get to this point,” said Cheshire coach Kylee McIntosh. “I think we still have the best record in the whole state, so I’m not mad.
“They worked hard; some games just don’t go our way, ” she continued.
“They’re an incredible team, so kudos to them.”
The Wreckers finished at 162-4 and finished atop Class LL for a second straight sea son. A year ago, before penalty kicks were instituted to settle championship game ties, Staples shared the crown with FCIAC rival Wilton after battling to a 0-0 tie.
Both McIntosh and Staples coach Bob Beattie agreed on

this point: last year’s trip to the state finals, on the very same Trinity Health Stadium field, worked to the Wreck ers ’ advantage on Sunday.
“I think it did help us. We only graduated three kids from the starting lineup last year; we had 23 returners who already had this experi ence, ” said Beattie. “I told the Cheshire coaches they’ve got a talented team and they’re talented coaches be cause they wouldn’t have got this far with the record they have beating the teams they have if they weren’t good. So I told them, ‘Use this and get back next year.’”
If the Rams do return, per haps they won’t be so affect ed by the bright lights of the championship stage. Those lights can be awfully blind
ing on new eyes.
“I think some of it was our inexperience being in these kind of games, but at the same time I think we were just not ready mentally to take up the chall nege, ” McIntosh said. “I think we were a sort of scared and we gave them a little bit too much respect.
“We talk about how we don’t let fear dominate our play, and today it did. But it’s a big stage and I under stand it,” added McIn tosh, who played for the Rams the last time they reached a girls soccer state final in 2008.

Cheshire lost that year to Trumbull, 1-0, in overtime. McIntosh recalled the Rams went after victory full-throt tle in OT and wound up paying for it.
14 years later, against Sta ples, the Rams came out of the gate with alacrity, carry ing the first 10 minutes be hind the right-side forays of senior forward Anna Hurl but.
But Staples settled in and steadily began to tilt the field. Plus, the one big en gine the Rams couldn’t get untracked was star midfield er/striker Gabby Tirado. Whenever the senior got the ball on her skilled feet, mul tiple Staples defenders closed on her and closed quickly.

The M.O. was clear: Don’t give Tirado room or time to operate.

“Everytime I got the ball, a lot of pressure came on me,” Tirado said. “This happened a couple times during the season, so I moved around position-wise. But in the end, they got the better of it.”
Containing Tirado was high on the Staples game plan.
“She is quite a talent,” Beat tie said. “We gave our two center-backs specific infor mation on how to play against her and I thought they executed the game plan really well.
“Luckily for us, we’ve seen talented strikers all season, so the game plan’s kind of the same to stop the striker. You try to keep kids like that quiet,” Beattie added. “She had periods in the game where she was excellent. You hope she doesn’t score in those periods and, thankful ly, today she didn’t. But she’s a great kid. She’s going to have a great future in the game. ”

Tirado is almost certain to play in college. First, she’s likely to put in a prep year. For now, she was waging a tearful war with her emo tions as her high school ca reer came to a close. After missing most of her junior season to a fractured fibula, Tirado rebounded with a se nior season that surpassed the All-New England cam paign she enjoyed as a sophomore.

“We worked so hard to get here and it’s still such an ac complishment to have made to it to this game,” Tirado said.

NEW HAVEN She was not a No. 1 seed. But she was, without a doubt, the No. 1 area swimmer at Sunday’s State Open at Yale Universi ty’s Kiphuth Pool.
Re-introducing Miss Julia Barto of Cheshire High School.
The junior brought home two individual gold medals from the CIAC’s most elite meet, capturing the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke.
With a time of 2:03.05, Barto out-dueled Darien’s Miller Ward (2:03.62) and Hall’s Meghan Tiernan (2:03.75) in the 200 IM.
In the 100 backstroke, Barto touched in 56.57, which is a new Cheshire school record. The backstroke was a local showcase. Three of the top four spots went to area girls. Lyman Hall senior Elise Richardson, the Class M champion, was third in 58.75. Cheshire sophomore Natalia Gajecki, the Class L champ, was fourth in 58.84.
In that Class L meet, swum Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Corner stone Aquatics in West Hart ford, Gajecki had edged Bar to by 3/100 of a second as the teammates finished 1-2 in the backstroke.
Five days later in New Haven, Barto cut .33 seconds off her time in the back stroke and 1.72 off her time in the IM, where she’d placed third.
Subtraction added up to two state crowns for the junior.

One of Barto’s senior team mates, Julianna Tyler, notched a pair of fourthplace finishes in the 200 IM at 2:07.80 and in 100 but terfly at 57.09.
Cheshire senior Avery Po tyrala, who claimed the Class L titles in the 100 and 200 freestyles, placed sixth in both events on Sunday. She swam a 53:37 in the 100 and a 1:54.49 in the 200.

Also finishing sixth Sunday was Southington’s Ella Nadeau in the 100 breast stroke. The junior’s time of 1:07.59 was just a smidge off the school-record 1:07.53 she’d recorded in the Class LL meet on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
Lyman Hall junior Hailey Baker also qualified for the Open in the breaststroke. She was 14th in 1:09.11. In all, area swimmers were rep resented in every event, in cluding all three relays. With a time of 1:47.57, Cheshire’s 200 medley relay of Gajecki, Barto, Tyler and Potyrala was second to
