COVID-19 cases decline in some area towns

Coronavirus hasn’t given Connecticut much to celebrate over the Thanksgiving holiday, according to the latest health statistics, but area municipalities have seen declines in their weekly caseloads.

Meriden, Wallingford,

Southington and Cheshire all saw week-to-week drops in the number of COVID-19 cases within their borders.

Meriden had 272 cases in the week ending Nov. 21, 82 cases less than the week before, which had 354; Wallingford had 141, a 93-case drop; Southington, 108, a 33case decline; and Cheshire had 57 cases, down from 92

the week before, according to state officials.

Statewide, meanwhile, 3,429 new cases were confirmed since Wednesday, Nov. 25, bringing Connecticut’s total to 112,581. With 71,327 tests administered since Wednesday, the state’s positivity rate is now 4.81 percent, with 3,146,829 tests administered overall. Thirtyfive people died over the Thanksgiving holiday, Gov. Ned Lamont said.

hospitalizations topped 1,000 as of Friday with 1,107 — the highest level since the pandemic’s first wave in May. Experts fear that Thanksgiving will prompt another sharp upward trend in cases with families congregating for the holidays, but it will take a week or two for case counts to show whether that happened.

Meanwhile, Meriden’s daily rate of new COVID-19 occurrences increased from 74.9 cases per 100,000 residents as of the week of Nov.

P & Z approves subdivision A proposed subdivision off of Talmadge Road in Cheshire was unanimously approved recently by the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The plans were presented by Ryan MacAvoy from the engineering firm of Milone &

MacBroom, who represented his client, Frank Longo, at the meeting.

The application was for a two-lot subdivision on a 2.3acre lot at the corner of Talmadge Road and Wallingford Road. The lot currently has one existing house and pool, and it is served by a private well and subsurface disposal system. Most of the property is a lawn right now and with the new plan, the existing home lot will be cut off at an acre and an additional lot will be created with the second acre. The additional lot will be served by public water and a septic system.

We should probably not be surprised that schools know what they’re doing. When the pandemic hit and schools closed, educators had to turn on a dime and figure out how to provide remote learning. This was not comparable to amending one’s lesson plan; this was more like changing careers.

It hasn’t, obviously, been a complete success. How could it have been? Some students simply lack the technology, as in computers and online access. For some, schools are the only source of normalcy in life; you can’t replace that virtually.

It appears now that with the promise of vaccines there may be a chance of getting back to normal in the not so distant future. It may not be returning to February, but it could mean returning to a more typical school year.

The question is: What is the lasting impact of so extended a trauma on the lives of the young, who will inherit the world?

I would like to see how it works out. Maybe help, if I can. I imagine you would, too.

The Pancake Chronicles tell a delicious tale

After my column about appleflappen (Dutch beer batter fritters), I bumped into an acquaintance who follows my column. Diane was excited to try them. She later scolded me that I missed a step (she did not actually scold me, but I feel really bad about it). Know that if you attempt to make appleflappen, do not forget you do need to add the yolk to the

batter, not just the whites, even though I forgot to tell you that. My bad.

Diane is from Virginia and tells me her family ate pancakes, usually for Sunday night supper. Diane fondly recalls having pancake dinners especially when her Virginia grandparents lived with her family. She insists her granny made the best ones, cooking them in the cast iron skillet. Diane follows her granny’s technique and choice of cookware.

The recipe they give sounds delicious as it also has an apple caramel sauce topping. If Diane makes them like that, I am inviting myself over to her house for dinner.

In my household, my kid will not eat pancakes for dinner. The reason, I have been informed, is because throughout the childhood, the dad used to make buckwheat pancakes with Stuart & John’s (New Hampshire) amber maple syrup every blasted, single solitary weekI also talked to another Southerner here in town, she end. from the “land of steady habits.” Needless to say, the limit for pancakes in a lifetime for the kid has been met.

As for me, my Dutch parents used to make pannekoeken. Pancakes were dinner at many a meal. My moeder (mother) made several variations. Dinner pancakes were not your everyday pancakes. Many times, they held a surprise inside. Not a toy, or something you might find in a New Orleans King Cake, mind you. I am talking about a savory filling.

My dad’s choice, or moeder’s choice, of filling for him was bacon. I really did not like those at all. The bacon was fried in the iron skillet. When the bacon was finished and removed from the pan, the pannekoek batter was poured into the skillet and the ba-

con was placed on the top.

More batter was added to cover the bacon if needed. For my brother and me, moeder made the most delicate pancakes, the thinner the better. Call it a crepe if you must (it is not).

Once out of the skillet (yes, we used an iron skillet as well), my brother and I would spread butter on them and roll them up on our plates and top with powdered sugar. No maple syrup. We did not even know what that was.

Truth be told, I only discovered and accepted (albeit grudgingly) maple syrup when I met my born and bred New England hubby.

For my childhood, if we even used syrup, it was King Syrup. That was one thick, corn syrup with a blush of coloring. Now that I am hooked on New England maple syrup, the thought of King Syrup makes me gag. The compa-

One thing I do not ever remember was a Dutch celebration called Sint Pannekoeken. Yes, the translation is Saint Pancake, and it is a national holiday. The backstory involves monks and a miracle pannekoeken. This happened in the Old Days (that is anytime before 1970 if you ask me). The event originated in the city of Rotterdam, my father’s birthplace, so I am surprised he never mentioned it. Generally, what happens is that in the Netherlands on Nov. 29, everyone puts a pancake on their head and shouts out a cheery, “Have a blessed Sint Pannekoeken!” What the heck?!

Well, I think I will stick to having an occasional pannekoek and skip the holiday (for now).

These children live in various situations including group homes, shelter and temporary housing facilities. Spruce up your holiday with a fresh native tree from one of the over 100 Christmas tree farms in Connecticut. The scent of a local tree will fill the house with an unmatched fragrance and will hold its needles until the last festive day is over.

The tradition of celebrating the holiday season with a real Christmas tree dates back some 500 years. Approximately 33 million American families will celebrate this holiday season with a fresh, Christmas tree.

Evergreen trees symbolize everlasting life, and the aroma of a real Christmas tree evokes strong memories of family traditions and the innocence of childhood.

The use of evergreens as a symbol and celebration of life during Winter Solstice celebrations started in ancient Roman and Egyptian times.

This practice evolved over the centuries to be incorporated in the celebration of Christmas in the Germanic areas of Europe. The first recorded display of a decorated Christmas tree was in 1510, in Riga, Latvia (established by Germans in 1210).

Christmas trees were decorated with

fruit, cookies and candy that would later be shared among family members as gifts.

By the 1700s, the tradition of celebrating the holidays with a Christmas tree was widely practiced throughout Europe. The tradition was brought to the U.S. by Hessian mercenaries during the Revolutionary War. In 1804, U.S. soldiers stationed at Fort Dearborn, in Chicago, used evergreen trees in their barracks to celebrate Christmas.

The popularity of the Christmas tree then proliferated. In 1856, Franklin Pierce brought the Christmas tree tradition to The White House.

Since 1966, members of the National Christmas Tree Association have

presented a beautiful, fresh Christmas tree to the First Family. This tree is displayed in the Blue Room of The White House.

Usually Christmas trees begin life in a nursery where superior seed is planted and grown to two-year-old seedlings. The seedlings are then taken from the nursery beds and replanted in Christmas tree plantations. While growing, Christmas trees provide many environmental benefits. They replenish the Earth's oxygen supply, serve as wildlife habitat, increase soil stability and provide a valuable and aesthetically pleasing improvement to the land.

Decide on where you will place the tree. Will it be seen from all sides or will some of it be up against a wall? Be sure to choose a spot away from heat sources, such as TVs, fireplaces, radiators and air ducts. Place the tree clear of doors.

Measure the height and width of the space you have available in the room where the tree will be placed. There is nothing worse than bringing a tree indoors only to find it’s too tall. Take a tape measure with you to measure your chosen tree and bring a cord to tie your tree to the car.

Remember that trees sold on retail lots in urban areas may have come from out of state and may have been exposed to drying winds in transit. They may have been cut weeks earlier. Buy trees early before the best trees have been sold and where trees are shaded. Ask the retailer whether See Tree, A13

Tips to maintain Christmas tree quality Displaying trees in water in a traditional reservoir type stand is the most effective way of maintaining their freshness and minimizing needle loss problems.

Once home, place the tree in water as soon as possible.

Most species can go six to eight hours after cutting the trunk and still take up water.

Don’t bruise the cut surface or get it dirty. If needed, trees can be temporarily stored for several days in a cool location. Place the freshly cut trunk in a bucket that is kept full of water.

Make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don’t cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also reduces the amount of water available to the tree.

To display the trees indoors, use a stand with an adequate water holding capacity for the tree. As a general rule, stands should provide one quart of water per inch of stem diameter. Devices are available that help maintain a constant water level in the stand.

Cheshire High School student wins first place in VFW district contest from area high schools. Judges were VFW members from other posts in the district.

Cheshire High School student Jonathan Chen won first place last week in the District 2 competition of the Veterans of Foreign Wars annual Voice of Democracy contest for high school students.

Chen, a sophomore, was selected by a three-person panel of judges from Cheshire’s VFW Post 10052. He was among a field of four CHS competitors. At the district level, he competed against seven other candidates

The most common utility scam involves customers receiving a phone call warning that their service will be shut off because of unpaid bills. The scammer claims to be a representative from Eversource and tells the customer that in order to avoid an immediate shutoff, they need to settle an overdue bill by providing a credit card number or a prepaid debit card. In many cases, the scammer can manipulate

the caller ID to display “Eversource,” creating a greater sense of confusion and urgency. Both businesses and homeowners have been targeted by this type of scam, with businesses often contacted at a time of day when losing power would have a devastating impact on their ability to serve customers.
