It had been close throughout the game's previous 59 minutes, and at that point, the junior class was leading 13 to 12.
Cheshire High School senior Liney Dutchyshyn scores a touchdown.
Rosado, quarterback for the seniors, had led her team, wearing black uniforms, down the field with a long run of her own, and then heaved a 57-yard catchand-run pass to teammate Emma Watkinson, who had outlegged her opponents down the field until they finally pulled her flag, stopping Watkinson at the six-yard-line.

The food bank, which moved to Sandbank Road in 2016, serves 137 families in town, with about 250 clients visiting each week, Walsh estimated. The clients include young families with children, older adults who haven’t quite reached retirement age and senior citizens.

#OptOutside proves to be popular alternative to Black Friday frenzy Friday marked another installment of the Cheshire Land Trust's now annual #OptOutside event.
It resembles a small grocery store, complete with donated shopping carts, and rows of shelves, containing soup cans, cereal boxes, pasta, cleaning products, pet food and other items.
“The need is there. The need is great,” Walsh said, estimating there are at least another 130 families in town who qualify for food pantry aid, but don’t come.

Cheshire High School junior Sophia Kuhlthau is hoisted up by her teammates after they won the school’s first senior vs. junior intra-squad powder puff football match on Nov. 27.
From A1

But ultimately it was Kulthau's throwing, not her running, that would give the juniors a lead they would not give up. The score was tied 6 to 6 early in the second half, and the junior class had marched down the field following a handful of long runs. The game's first half was a mostly defensive affair,
Devin Leith-Yessian, Record-Journal
with both teams making key stops. The juniors were on the 15yard-line, in senior territory, when quarterback Sophie Braylyan threw a lateral pass to Kulthrau. Instead of running, Kulthrau hurled the ball to receiver Ellie Rockoff, who would run into the end zone, giving the
juniors a 12 to 6 lead. An extra point kick would extend that margin: 13 to 6. But Rosado and her senior squad were determined to come back. She would connect with receiver Liney Dutchyshyn for a 14-yard touchdown pass. But, with a missed extra point kick, the seniors still
trailed.

Seniors Brianna Collins and Ameya Arun, despite having lost by a point, were both smiling at the end of the game. “It was really cool,” Collins said. “It was a friendly but competitive event,” Arun said. The juniors, led by Kulthrau, were elated by the victory. “It feels great,” she said, adding the team had practiced a lot — including the trick play that proved the game winner.
Athletic Director Steve Trifone was pleased by the game and the attendance.
Despite the friendly competition, the juniors came away with in-school bragging rights.
“It was a great first time,” he said. “We're going to look to try to make it a yearly event.”
“It felt great to beat the seniors,” Braylyan said, with a smile.
The proceeds raised at the gate will benefit the senior and junior classes.

Naturalist training is for people of all experience levels who want to expand their knowledge of the habitats, plants, animals and natural history of their local communities. It offers the rewards of sharing that knowledge through teaching others about the stewardship of our natural resources, and it provides the opportunity to meet, and work with, those who share the same interests and concerns. As one class member stated, “It broke open my brain to whole other parts of nature I hadn’t paid enough attention to.”

“We could have kicked the PAT, but the guys wanted to go win the game,” Cheshire head coach Don Drust said. “Our thought was, ‘Go out and win the game.’ It’s a decision you make. You have to have confidence in your guys, and we do.
After calling time out, Cheshire decided to try to win the game.
“At the end of the day, one play doesn’t define everything, it really doesn’t,” “Once they jumped offsides, Drust added. “We played so hard and so well. “In general, we don’t think Cheshire is a needy community ... but it’s difficult to be under the poverty level here,” she added. Walsh, executive director since Sept. 30, previously worked with other area nonprofit agencies. She doesn’t see the need for food going away any time soon. “The clients that I’ve met, they’ve had to make difficult choices,” she said. “We do not want them to have to choose to use their money for food, home fuel, car insurance, etc.”

sured of a Class LL playoff spot heading into the game. And, as expected, the game was not only played at a level worthy of two teams headed to the postseason, but as even as the scoreboard reflected. With the victory, Southington (9-1) moved up to No. 2 in playoff points and was to host Ridgefield (8-2) in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday night. The Blue Knights actually finished with more playoff points than Darien, which lost 20-0 to New Canaan in the annual Turkey Bowl. The third-seeded Blue Wave beat the Blue Knights in Week 2 of the regular season, 24-8. Cheshire, which finished the regular season 8-2 and fell to No. 5 in the Class LL rankings, was to open at No. 4 seeded Simsbury (9-1) on Tuesday. Southington beat Simsbury 35-7 this season en route to winning the CCC Division I West title. “I don’t think there is any mystery why both of us are going to the playoffs,” Drust said. “Two really good teams playing on Thanksgiving morning. I couldn’t be prouder of my guys.”
In 2018, the Connecticut Food Bank distributed about 27 million pounds of food throughout Fairfield, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London and Windham counties, explained the organization’s CEO Valarie Shultz-Wilson. Shultz-Wilson estimates the food bank serves around 144,000 Connecticut residents each month. The organization runs
monthly pop-up mobile pantries in Wallingford and Bridgeport, Shultz-Wilson said. Last week, one pop-up pantry attracted about 350 families. Most food-insecure families are what Shultz-Wilson described as the “working poor,” meaning they may be working one or more jobs but their incomes can’t keep up with the costs of living. “We don’t serve people who are just sitting around looking for a handout,” ShultzWilson said. Robin Lamott Sparks, executive director of the nonprofit organization End Hunger Connecticut!, said there are pockets of hunger in some of
the state’s wealthiest communities, like Greenwich. In Meriden, New Opportunities Inc. operates one of the city’s largest food pantries. There are at least five different pantries operated by churches and other nonprofits altogether, estimates Ola Brown, the agency’s assistant director. Brown said the need is so great for food that the pantry New Opportunities at 55 W. Main St. is open seven days a week. “We serve anywhere from 40 to 50 people a day who come in for food,” Brown said. “When clients come in, they do not just get a bag of food. We make it a shopping

experience. They go in, and help themselves to the things they need.” The agency also provides heating, energy and rent assistance. The next two months will be busy for pantries like those in Cheshire, Wallingford and Meriden. Walsh estimated the Cheshire Community Food Pantry would distribute roughly 140 dinners for Thanksgiving alone. Many of those donations will come from local churches and other organizations, which sponsor their own drives. mgagne@record-journal.com 203-317-2231 Twitter:@MikeGagneRJ

Southington led 7-0, but for only two minutes in regulation. Cheshire tied the game with 8:08 to play in the second quarter. After a scoreless second half, the teams traded touchdowns in two overtimes before Southington made the play of the game. On that decisive play, the Knights never let the Cheshire offensive line make a push, and Shumilla ran into a wall of Southington defenders.

“At first, I thought they were going to kick (the PAT) to keep it going because they’d scored two straight times (in OT),” Southington linebacker Billy Carr said. “Then their players all started going crazy. “I was like, ‘All right, they want to get after it,’” Carr added. As for the stop? Carr said it was a team effort. “We just all bared down and came out on top,” Carr said. “That is what football is all about. I dove in over the top. The linemen were bear-crawling under. Max (Casella) flew in like a missile. It was just awesome.” “That was one of most defensive games I’ve ever been a part of,” Carr continued. “I’ve been playing football for a long, long time, and that was a battle between two great teams.”
