RECORD-JOURNAL SCHOLAR-ATHLETES / CHESHIRE

A farewell to one of the best Record-Journal staff

Kristine Drust said it at the end of the softball campaign and her Cheshire coaching colleagues from other seasons — Sue Bavone of volleyball and Michelle Viera of basketball — would no doubt agree. As we bid farewell to Mia Juodaitis, we bid farewell to one of the best student-athletes to ever come through Cheshire High School. Local artist illustrates children’s book

By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

Acclaimed artist Tony Falcone is well-known for his portraits, murals and sculptures: many of which are colossally grand in scale. For something completely different from his usual fare, Falcone recently collaborated with children’s book author Brenda Goodale. That partnership has borne a work of amazingly realistic

renderings, only this time in delightful illustrations that are of a smaller scale — small enough to hold in your hands.

The book is called "Mermaid Under the Bridge," and it is the sequel to Goodale’s first book, “The Pride of Perkin’s Cove,” in which a young boy named Jack glimpses a mermaid. Set in the small See Book, A4

Cheshire Garden Club celebrates 99 years of community involvement Cheshire Garden Club members gathered June 10, in the Conservatory at Elim Park in Cheshire to celebrate its 99th anniversary beginning with its foundation on June 17, 1920. The club has instituted a number of wellknown projects and events over the years, from scholarships to beautification contests. Many of these initiatives are ongoing. Here are a few of the highlights of club activities over the years. The club’s annual scholarship fundraiser is derived from the group’s Holiday Luncheon in December. Held at the Aqua Turf, it averages about 300 guests and features a prominent design program speaker and over 50 fresh green table arrangements made by club members. This event is now in its 39th year. See Garden, A4
