The Masons counted among their members, teachers, salesmen, physicians, farmers, chemists, food inspectors, merchants, firefighters, state legislators, reporters, politicians, first selectmen, architects, and many veterans beginning with the Civil War.

“Take it with a grain of salt, but without the Masons, Cheshire would not be the Cheshire we know today,” said David Stewart, historian for the Masonic Temple Lodge No. 16. Stewart is passionate about the Masons and the history of the lodge. In his past 10 years as historian, he has published a history of the lodge, and is working on another and continues to research and document Masons who have had a place in the Cheshire temple. The records are well-kept. Amazingly enough, Stewart said the Masons Lodge No. 16 has the original minutes from the very first meetings. See Masons, A6

Dozens helped with back-to-school needs By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

There’s nothing like the smiles you see on a child’s face with the prospect of new clothes and supplies for back to school. It’s even more precious when you know there are children who do not take it for granted they will even have new shoes and a backpack. As a hand-up to less fortunate children, the Cheshire Community Food Pantry holds a Backto-School Drive each year.

According to the pantry’s Executive Director April Duquette, the average cost for getting a child ready for school each year is about $250. “This can be a huge burden for families and we feel it is our duty to help alleviate that burden as much as possible,” she said. A total of 40 children, from pre-K to grade 12, were sponsored locally this year. The work to get the supplies handed out to them will be completed in time for school. See School, A5

Murphy sells his Cheshire residence for $478K By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff

U.S. Sen. Christopher Murphy’s residence on Paul Ney Road has sold, after having been on the market for a little more than a month.

The sale price for the second-term senator’s now former home was $478,000, according to a listing on the website for real estate brokerage firm Coldwell Banker.

According to town property records, Murphy and his wife, Catherine Holahan, had purchased the property in 2010 for $477,500. “The family is currently house hunting in the Hartford area to be closer to family and to the office,” Albini said. Murphy’s in-state office is in Hartford. His immediate family lives in Wethersfield.

Local funeral director selected to national board By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff

Daniel J. Ford became wellacquainted with the funeral profession early on. His father had gone to work for Alderson Funeral Home in the 1970s. “It was all I knew growing up,” said Ford, who was recently appointed as an atlarge representative on the board of directors for the National Funeral Directors Association. “I always admired how my

father was able to assist and help and comfort people in such a terrible time in their life,” Ford said. “I admired that. I admired who he was.” Ford followed in the footsteps of his father, John W. Ford, in becoming a funeral director. After graduating from Naugatuck High School, Daniel Ford earned a degree in mortuary science from the now-former Mount Ida College in Massachusetts in the mid-1990s.

Daniel Ford’s career wasn’t just in funeral service. He also served as a volunteer firefighter and later a career firefighter in Naugatuck. He retired from that post in 2008. In 1987, John Ford purchased Alderson from its original owner. A few years ago, Daniel Ford bought the business from his father, who remains involved as the business’ board chairman. Alderson-Ford now operates a funeral home at 615 S. Main St., in Cheshire, as well

as in Waterbury and Naugatuck. Daniel Ford, a Cheshire resident, had been a member of the national organization’s policy board and advisory board. He is also a past president and treasurer of the Connecticut Funeral Directors Association. His two-year term on the organization’s board of directors begins in October.

“We believe that children should be allowed to enjoy their childhood without being burdened with the stressors of being labeled a lowincome household. We want children whose families use the pantry to start the school year off on the same positive note that their peers will,” Duquette said. Duquette met with members of the school system who stated that approximately 350 families in town utilize the free or reduced lunch program. “That’s 9 percent of students according to End Hunger CT! and one in six children in America face food insecurity, Duquette said, explaining further that New Haven County specifically has 17.3 percent for a total of 31,820 children in food insecure families. Of the 17.3 percent, 33 percent of those families are ineligible for federal assistance programs. To help where possible, Duquette received information on necessary supplies, such as binders, notebooks, pens and pencils, directly from the schools in town. She also had parents who use the pantry fill out a form with their child’s information, including color preferences so that shopping would be customized.

“I spend a lot of time here alone,” Stewart said. The Masonic Lodge in Cheshire was formed in 1790. Charter members included David Badger, Thomas Atwater, Abraham Ives and Moses Moss. The group has grown through the years; the current membership is listed at 162. No doubt, you probably know a Mason, too. It might be your doctor, a business owner or your neighbor. The first two constables of what would later become the Cheshire Police Department were Masons, and the first four or five members of the volunteer fire department were also Masons, Stewart said.

At the time it was one big room with steam generators and batteries. In the earliest days of the organization, they gathered at the old Hitchcock store, near the First Church green. For a time they also met in West Cheshire near the Ball & Socket Mfg. building on Willow Street, and held meetings at the Cornwall House, currently housing the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce.

For decades, the Masons met at the original Grange Hall on Wallingford Road. In 1955, the Masons moved next door to the Independent Order of Oddfellows building after meeting at the Grange Hall for about 50 years. Their timing could not have been better—as the original Grange Hall building burned to the ground just days after the Masons moved.

Beachport origins begin with a canal By Mitzi Romano

(Mitzi Romano and the History Hound are back with more Tails of the History Hound, originally created for the Cheshire Historical Society.) For this "Tail” we chose a path more traveled. Specifically, we take a look at the portion of the Farmington Canal Linear Trail which runs from West Main Street to Jarvis Street. But before we head down the trail, let’s back up, up West Main Street a bit.

Originally, this portion of the canal, located in “West Cheshire” was referred to as the Cheshire Summit level. Water was let into it on Nov. 24, 1827, and a great celebration ensued. According to various accounts, this celebration included Eldad Keeler standing on top of the chimney of Richard Beach’s store. With a flag in one hand, he threw a bottle of “pink water” into the canal and shouted “Beachport!” The crowd shouted “Beachport!” in reply. And so the area was re-named.

Washer’s group is doing their part to populate a good stretch of the East Coast Greenway with gardens, places of refuge, if you will, with native plants and flowers for pollinators— be they birds, butterflies, bees, moths or insects. Modeled after a similar movement in Oslo and Seattle, the Pollinator Pathway “has taken off,” said Washer. Since beginning in 2017, volunteers from land trusts, garden clubs, conservation commissions and others have joined the mission to build the pathway. It’s something people see as positive, it’s really a “grassroots movement,” she said. The goal is to protect pollinators, forests, fields and streams, but also to connect open space, people and towns to each other,” said Washer, who handed out brochures with information on how to start a pollinator pathway in your town, native plants and flower suggestions, flower colors and shapes to attract different pollinators and other tips.

Local and national groups are rallying together to create a Pollinator Pathway, a pesticide-free corridor of public and private properties that provide native plant habitat and nutrition for pollinators. “You’ve got to teach your children how to navigate that. And you can’t teach them if you don’t know what’s on their phone,” Guilford said. Linehan also recommended that parents monitor their kids’ devices daily and that they only allow them to use the devices in areas where adults are watching. Children under 16 years old shouldn’t be using social

media. If younger children are using social media accounts, their settings should be private “at all times,” Linehan urged, recommending parents check often that those settings are intact. “I have this conversation with my kids often. And I check my kids’ phones,” Linehan said. “The rule in my house is if you don’t let me check it, you automatically lose it. And if there’s something going on and you don’t tell me about it, you automatically lose it. But if something happens, you come to me of your own volition, you will be rewarded. That’s the rule in my house.”

Hayes and Fox drove to various gas stations to receive cash back during transactions with his bank card. The total amount taken from the man’s bank account was about $969. The man said the car stopped and one of the two men said they were at the movie theater parking lot in Southington. 5 things to know if you are visiting Lake Compounce SOUTHINGTON — Lake Compounce is one of the oldest amusement parks in North America, but you may not know everything about what makes the 170-year-old park special. “I think it’s a great place to bring kids but it’s also a lot of fun for adults too, and I think that makes us unique,” said Amy Thomas, director of marketing for the park. Thomas walked through some of the things happening at the park over the next year, and key points in its recent and distant past.

The Plainville Fire Company will host its annual Hot Air Balloon Festival at Norton Park, Friday, Aug. 23, 6 to 10 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 24, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 25, 6 a.m. to TBD. The festival features a craft show, car show and balloon launches, food, family entertainment, and a fireworks display on Friday night. Admission is free.

Registration takes place from 8 to 9:45 a.m. All makes of motorcycles are welcome The ride departs at 10 a.m. from Churchill Park and is escorted by many motor officers from throughout the state. Riders return to Churchhill Park at about 11:15 a.m. For more information, visit peterlavery.org.
