Honoring
those who did not return from war
More than 1.2 million Americans have been killed during war time, with some 600,000 of those casualties coming in our bloody Civil War.
The number of Americans lost in battle also includes 405,399 in World War II, 90,220 in Vietnam and nearly 7,000 in the ongoing War on Terror.
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, we remember the men and women who did not return from war; Americans who made the ultimate
sacrifice. The Joseph Campbell quote "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself" comes to mind.
Decades after Memorial Day was declared a national holiday, in 2000, the National Moment of Remembrance was established by Congress. Wherever Americans are at 3 p.m., local time, on Memorial Day, we are asked to pause in an act of national unity for a duration of one minute.

QU athletics’ Mecca has witnessed school’s transformation
Press Release
North Haven resident Billy Mecca was the longesttenured faculty or staff member honored at Quinnipiac University’s end-ofyear employee recognition celebration on May 16.
Mecca has worn many hats
over his 45 years with QU athletics. Currently, he’s in his 25th year as senior associate athletic director.
Mecca has had a front-row seat to witness the university’s growth “from a small local college to a national-recognized university.”
“It was during that time, whether I realized it or not, that a community was formed with grace, shared vision, and hard work,” Mecca said. “That Quinnipiac community has taught me to cherish each day, our loved ones, our colleagues, little things like a beautiful sunrise, and big things like over-
coming a hard-fought obstacle.
“I’ve learned to appreciate what’s good and not take others or things for granted, and most importantly, I learned how to be kind,” he added. “I’m humbled, honored, and blessed after all these years to have played a
small role in what makes Quinnipiac such a special place to be.”
At QU, Mecca has served as an assistant men’s basketball coach, head men’s tennis coach, assistant director of athletics, head men’s basketball coach, and interim athletic director.

Memorial Day
1971.
According to a Department of Veteran Affairs’ fact sheet, the inspiration for the National Moment of Remembrance came from a group of children who were touring Washington, D.C. When they were asked what Memorial Day meant to them, they replied, “That’s the day the pools open!”
Those youngsters can be forgiven for not understanding the true meaning behind the holiday, a May 2000 Gallup poll revealed that only 28 percent of Americans actually did.
Originally known as Decoration Day, what would be known as Memorial Day originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in
By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held throughout the nation. It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars.
In his 1914 Memorial Day address, President Woodrow Wilson said of fallen soldiers, "They do not need our praise. They do not need that our admiration should sustain them. There is no immortality that is safer than theirs. We come not for their sakes but for our own, in order that we may drink at the same springs of inspiration from which they themselves drank."
Wilson continued, "Therefore this peculiar thing comes
about, that we can stand here and praise the memory of these soldiers in the interest of peace. They set us the example of self-sacrifice, which if followed in peace will make it unnecessary that men should follow war any more."
While many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or attending patriotic ceremonies, for the majority of us, the holiday is not a solemn occasion; it's just a day off, a cause for revelry.
Certainly, we should enjoy some relaxation Monday, but let's also take time to ponder the meaning behind the holiday, perhaps at 3 p.m., the National Moment of Remem brance.
Think about the 1.2 million Americans who went off to war and never came home. It's the least we can do to honor their memory.

Haven Middle School. The parade route will go from Bailey Road and end at the American Legion Post 76 building, where there will be a stage set up for brigades being announced and speeches afterward.
This year’s Grand Marshal is Robert Maturo, North Haven’s American Legion Post 76 Commander.
Maturo is a United States Navy veteran. He enlisted in the Navy following two of his older brothers. His younger brother also enlisted in the Navy; another brother defected and joined the Air Force.
After graduating from Yeoman “A” School, Maturo reported to the USS Randolph (CVS15) and was assigned to the Captain’s office. Shortly after reporting to the USS Randolph, he was ordered to
Boston, Mass., to decommission. He was then transferred to the USS Yorktown (CVS10), where he was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class and assigned as the Captain’s Yeoman.
During this time, the USS Yorktown was ordered to deploy to the North Atlantic to participate in NATO exercises “Sparkplug” and “Peacekeeper.” During this time, the ship’s crew earned the “Memorious Unit Commendation.”
After completing the North Atlantic cruise, the USS Yorktown was sent to Boston to decommission. The USS Yorktown found a new home, and Maturo was transferred to the Patrol Squadron 23 based at the Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Maine.
Maturo served as the Captain’s Yeoman and was promoted to Petty Officer Second Class. He was also assigned as the Leading Petty Officer in the operations de-
partment.
While serving with the VP23, the squadron deployed to NAS Rota, Spain, and then to NAS Sigonella, Sicily. When returning from Sicily, Maturo was discharged. Maturo then returned to New Haven and attended the University of New Haven, earning a Bachelor’s degree in business administration. He married his wife Donna in 1974 and raised a family.
After retiring from his professional career in the national quick service restaurant and serving as a district manager in the Greater New Haven area, he joined the American Legion in North Haven.
He is in his fifth year as Commander of Post 76. He hopes to grow Post 76 memberships and continue helping all veterans.

Rules changes made to high school basketball
By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
There was already a major change coming this winter to Connecticut boys and girls high school basketball: the shot clock.
Now more changes have arrived.
Last week, the National Federation of State High School Associations announced rule changes for the 2023-24 basketball season. The biggest apply to foul shooting.
The one-and-one has been done away with. All trips to the foul line will be two shots.
How that “bonus” situation is calculated has changed. Team fouls will no longer be counted by halves. They will reset at the end of each quarter.
Two-shot free throws kick in on all fouls when the opposing team reaches five in a quarter.
Under the old rules, a team shot one-andone when an opponent committed seven fouls in a half, then went to two foul shots when the 10th foul of the half was committed.
According to Lindsey Atkinson, the National Federation’s director of sports, the Federation’s basketball rules committee studied data that showed higher injury rates during rebounding situations. Scrapping the one-and-one was seen as a way to reduce rough play.
Atkinson also said that resetting the fouls each quarter will improve game flow, and some local coaches agree.
“I like the five fouls and cleaning the slate each quarter,” Southington boys coach Ed Quick said. “You can get in situation where the referees are calling a game tight and get to five fouls really quick in the first quarter and then you can adjust to that in the second quarter. I like cleaning the slate.
“Doing away with the one-and-one is interesting.”
After years of deliberation, the 35-second shot clock was already arriving this winter for Connecticut boys and girls basketball.
“The shot clock is well overdue; it’s good Connecticut has caught up,” Quick said.

Rules
“They are trying to get the games flowing. You don’t know until you try it.”
Another change deals with inbounding after a foul. When the defensive team commits a violation in the frontcourt before the fivefoul bonus, or the ball becomes dead, the offensive team will inbound at one of four designated spots either the nearest 28-foot mark along each sideline or the nearest spot 3 feet outside the lane on the end line. The spot will be determined by where the infraction took place.
The one exception is when the defensive team causes the ball to go out of bounds. The resulting throw-in will be at the spot where the ball went out.
Those rule changes might seem arcane, but according to Quick, they’re not.
”Spotting the ball is bigger than you think, and having four spots where you take the ball out and knowing those four will be helpful as far as preparing, because there are parts of the floor
where you would rather not take out the ball,” the Southington coach said.
Sheehan girls basketball coach Mike Busillo said he likes the changes.
“I know the Federation’s rational is less contact, but this gets the game more in line to what is happening in college,” Busillo said. “I think it would be better for high school basketball in general if it was played with the same rules that are used at the higher levels. I would like to see a standard game for all levels and genders.”
Busillo also said he’s fine with the one-and-one being done away with.
“It’s change and not not everyone is comfortable with change,” Busillo said. “If you are late in a game and down, sure, you would like a team shooting one-and-one, but we are talking about three instances in the game on fouls seven, eight and nine. So it’s not a big deal.
“I like the reset of fouls, too, because you won’t have teams marching to the line with five minutes to go in the second quarter,” the Sheehan coach added. “The game flow should be better

Bill offers absolution, not exoneration for victims of witch trials
© The Connecticut Mirror
The state House of Representatives offered absolution, though pointedly not exoneration, to the nine women and two men hanged for witchcraft in 17th-century Connecticut, a dark and overlooked chapter of its colonial history.
By a vote of 121-30 on May 17, the House approved a resolution that was rewritten to sidestep lawyerly concerns, most notably whether contemporary Connecticut has a right to overturn ver-
dicts reached during British colonial rule.
“We have absolutely no power to exonerate someone who was convicted under a different government,” said Rep. Craig Fishbein, a lawyer and the ranking House Republican on the Judiciary Committee.
“Connecticut was a British colony,” said Rep. Doug Dubitsky, R-Chaplin, also a lawyer. “And all of these injustices that were carried out on these people were carried

Moncrief said he is looking forward to the shot clock coming into play next winter.
“I was at a AAU tournament a few weeks ago and a team was winning by a lot and they started holding the ball with 10 minutes to go in the game, ” Moncrief remarked.
“I think the shot clock is good and makes you keep playing until the end.”
Maloney girls basketball coach John Vieira said the changes will be positive in the long run, but will present some growing pains in the early going.
“It was already going to be different with the shot clock coming in, and now no more one-and-ones,” Vieira said.
“I like the changes; I’m in favor of them. The changes correlate with the higher levels and it’s good to have a universal system.
“The one-and-ones were unique for our game, but we will adapt,” Vieira added. “It will change some strategy and put more emphasis on defense because once you get that fifth foul, they are shooting two.”

Are You Looking For a New Way to Get Healthy?
I am a Chiropractor today because my life was turned around by the power of an adjustment. As a young child, I suffered from a myriad of unexplained health issues. My mother did not know where to turn. When I was six years old, I began getting adjusted regularly. Immediately, my health improved and I began to thrive as a normal child should. Then, in 1990, I fractured my spine during a skiing accident. My choice to seek chiropractic care quite literally saved my life. My body was able to heal without risky drugs or surgery. Had I not known about the power of Chiropractic. I may not be here to share my story.
Our principle is simple, your body has the power to heal itself; it was designed that way. This power flows from your brain to your body over the spinal cord and a vast net work of nerves. When stresses in our lives cause a shift in the spinal bones, there is interference in that brain to body connection. Over time, this leads to dysfunction, and often sickness, pain and disease.
I want to be your family's Chiropractor.
We have one goal in our office - to remove this interference so that your innate healing power flows and your body works perfectly, the way it was intended to. We have created an environment that allows you to get adjusted in an efficient and affordable way. Since 1996, Dr. Dawn Tobin has helped thousands of people regain their health with natural Chiropractic care. If you are frustrated with your current state of health and looking to try something new, please call our office today to schedule a NO-CHARGE CONVERSATION with the doctor. Find out how we can help!

out by the British, and this amendment makes that clear.”
To mollify opponents and get the measure called for a vote, the resolution’s sponsor, Rep. Jane Garibay, took the deal: Among other tweaks, Connecticut would absolve, not exonerate, the
condemned “of all crimes of witchcraft and familiarities with the devil.”
The resolution still would assert “misogyny played a large part in the trials and in denying defendants their rights and dignity” and that “Connecticut apologizes to the descendants of all those who were indicted, convicted and executed.”
The apology was galling to at least one lawmaker.
“I’m gonna say it. I’m really not sorry,” said Rep. Jason Perillo, R-Shelton. “Nobody from my family was here. And I’m looking at a lot of other folks. Nobody from your family was here.”
Garibay said the apology was important to descendants of the condemned witches who attended a public hearing of the Judiciary Committee in March.
“They’re not asking for money, ” Garibay said. “The only thing they’re asking is that as a community we say, ‘We are sorry this happened to you. ’”
Garibay is a Democrat from
Windsor, a community settled by the English in 1633, just 14 years before the village turned on one of their own, hanging Alice Young. Young was the mother of a daughter who escaped an epidemic that claimed neighboring children in 1647, a source of envy and suspicion ingredients in witchcraft accusations that persist, often directed at women.
The May issue of Scientific American reports that every year more than 1,000 people still are “tortured, expelled from their homes or killed after being charged with
witchcraft using magic, usually to cause harm.”
Leading religious figures and founders of Connecticut played roles in the trials. John Haynes and Thomas Welles, the first and fourth colonial governors, were magistrates at the trials. Hartford’s founder, the Rev. Thomas Hooker, endorsed them.
The First Church in Windsor acknowledged complicity in 2017 and apologized for its role in the hanging of Young and another woman, Lydia Gilbert, during a time of unexplained deaths.

Canned Dog & Cat Food Drive
Community Services for the Town of North Haven will be hosting a canned dog and cat food drive to benefit North Haven Animal Control. North Haven Animal Control has been experiencing a shortage of wet canned dog and cat food and is looking for your help.
Library garden gets a makeover
From the North Haven Garden Club:
Recently, the fence that was on the curbside garden, by the entrance of the North Haven Memorial Library, was removed and the garden was redesigned
by Lee Fermo and Cindy Adinolfi.
A hydrangea was planted and donated by Claudia Fasano.
Lee planted several perennial phlox, Mexican sunflower and
zinnia seeds were scattered by Cindy, and a path through the garden was made with pavers donated to the club.
In a couple of weeks, all the beautiful perennials should come alive.
Community Services will be collecting canned dog and cat food starting Monday, June 5 through Friday, June 23. Adult dog and cat wet food is needed; no dry food please. Residents are welcome to drop off donations at the Community Services office located at 5 Linsley St. weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. While wet food is strongly encouraged, monetary donations will gladfully be accepted as well. Please make checks payable to Treasurer, Town of North Haven, and indicate Food drive for Animal Control in the memo field. Checks can be mailed to the attention of North Haven Animal Control, Memorial Town Hall, 18 Church St., North Haven, CT 06473. For more information, please contact Carla Picard in Community Services at 203-2395321 ext. 505.
misogyny. He read the names of a half-dozen men who were indicted on witchcraft charges, not all of whom were convicted.
Garibay had to overcome skepticism about the need for the General Assembly to follow suit, as descendants of the executed had urged at the public hearing. House Speaker Matt Ritter, D-Hartford, acknowledged he had to be convinced.
“Traditionally, we do not do resolutions in the House, because you could go down a lot of rabbit holes. This one’s been worked on very hard,” Ritter said.
By rabbit holes, Ritter meant a fear that the House could be drawn into regular debates on matters not germane to the General Assembly or that have “no direct nexus to Connecticut.”
“We will be very firm in the future,” Ritter said. “Otherwise, we get opining on foreign policy in the United States government all day long. And we have two U.S. senators and five congressmen who do a fine job doing that for us.”
Garibay told the House the resolution was relevant.
“This complements the work that we are doing in the General Assembly by taking another step towards the justice that this government,
our state, all of us, are constantly working towards,” Garibay said. “It is far from frivolous.”
During the floor debate, Fishbein, R-Wallingford, took issue with the claims of
“All appeared to be non-female, and therefore, it’sa people bill and not a women’s rights sort of initiative,” said Fishbein, who also serves as a Wallingford town councilor.
Dubitsky claimed a measure of absolution, or least vindication, for himself.
His challenging, and quotable, questions at the public hearing about whether the condemned could be proven innocent went viral, drawing ridicule: Did he really need evidence that Alice Young was not a witch?
Dubitsky said during the floor debate that he simply was exercising due diligence.
“We didn’t know at the time of that Judiciary Committee meeting what these people had been accused of, what they had been convicted of, and what the disposition of those convictions were. So I
asked for some of that evidence,” Dubitsky said. “Well, silly me.”
Dubitsky detailed his efforts.
“I spent weeks searching through our statutes and could not find witchcraft or ‘familiarities with the devil’ as crimes in our current penal code. So it makes sense that we would find as is represented in this amendment that we don’t any longer find those to be penal crimes,” he said. “Now, you may have personal objections to those, to that type of conduct. But as we sit here today, they are not crimes under Connecticut law.”
And that was good enough for him to support the resolution.
So did Fishbein.
All 98 Democrats voted for the resolution, joined by 23 of the 53 members of the Republican minority.

Man arrested for leading street takeovers, racing & blocking roads
Associated Press
HARTFORD A Connecticut man was charged Monday with rioting and other crimes after police said he led a series of “street takeovers” across the state over the weekend involving illegal racing and mobs of people blocking roads.
State police said they arrested Jefferson Duron, 20, of Norwalk, shortly after 1:30 a.m. following the takeovers in Hartford, Tolland and New Haven counties involving more than 200 people on Sunday. Troopers said they pulled him over near Milford after his car was identified as one of the vehicles leading the events.
It wasn’t immediately clear if Duron has a lawyer who could respond to the allegations. He was detained on $250,000 bail.

In Brief National Trails Day
The North Haven Trail Association invites residents to join them in celebrating National Trails Day on Saturday, June 3 , 9 a.m. at the Chapman-Sinoway Park on Upper State Street. The NHTA has blazed a new 1mile trail marked with red markers to show the way.
Chapman-Sinoway Park consists of approximately 6 acres of woodland, a stream, pond for fishing or skating and picnic tables. The Chapman and Sinoway families who once occupied the land as farmers and dairy farmers donated the properties to the town of North Haven. National Trails Day is celebrated throughout the nation to connect people of all ages and abilities to trails in their communities. The NHTA are also stewards of Tidal Marsh Trail (behind Target) and the Banton Quinnipiac Trail in the Quinnipiac River State Park on Upper State Street. For more information about the NHTA contact northhaventrails.org.
Tolland on Sunday night, dozens of people blocked a main road leading to the University of Connecticut in nearby Storrs, just off Interstate 84. There were reports of bystander vehicles getting struck by baseball bats, an ambulance being damaged during a medical call and participants striking and jumping on a woman’s car, said Tolland Town Manager
Brian Foley.
“These events have a propensity for injury, property damage, mob-mentality decision making and a high potential for violence,” Foley, a former state trooper, wrote in a social media post Monday.
Street takeovers and illegal racing have become problems across the country,

Connecticut’s Newest College will be a Hispanic-Serving Institution
Connecticut’s 12 community colleges will finish merging in July to become Connecticut State Community College (CT State). The new school will be eligible to be designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution, or HSI. Prior to the merger, Capital, Gateway, Naugatuck Valley and Norwalk Community College were designated as HSIs.
So, what is a Hispanic-Serving Institution? As defined by the US Department of Education, an HSI is a college or university whose enrollment comprises more than 25% Hispanic/Latino students. In the US, there are currently more than two million Hispanic students enrolled in 451 HSIs across 24 states. So while only 19% of all higher education institutions qualify, 62% of all Latino undergraduates are enrolled in HSIs.
The HSI designation is more than a reflection of a school’s enrollment, however; it’s a commitment to equity for Hispanic/Latino students and advancing their success. On a large scale, this means having access to federal grant programs that enhance and strengthen HSIs.
At CT State, being an HSI means paying particular attention to the unique needs of the state’s Hispanic/Latino college students.
According to Dr. John Paul Chaisson-Cardena, Vice President of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, “Our
seeking the HSI and MSI (Minori-

ty-Serving Institution) status is consistent with our mission to serve all Connecticut residents. At CT State, we recognize that where you come from (e.g.: geography, culture, identity) is a strength that can be catalyzed to help our students feel that CT State is where they belong. In turn, that sense of belonging is what helps our students reach their goals.”
In 2020, Capital Community College received a five-year, $3 million grant to fund the Cultivating All-Inclusive Student Achievement (CASA) program. The program supports career and financial planning from enrollment through graduation. The program also aids faculty and staff in incorporating high-impact success strategies into their courses and student services. It assists students returning to college semester-to-semester and it increases the number of Hispanic students earning a degree or certificate. The program also has a cultural enrichment component, “Herencias Latinas,” that facilitates arts and humanities programming throughout the academic year.
There are more than half a million residents of Connecticut who are of Hispanic/Latino descent, and CT State is proud to serve more than 10,000 of them each semester. To learn more about CT State, visit CTState.edu.
