NO SNOW? NO PROBLEM Teen arrested after school threat found
By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
A 14-year-old girl was arrested Friday, Feb. 3 in connection to a threat of violence written in a bathroom stall at North Haven High School. The teenager was charged with threatening in the first degree, breach of peace in the second and criminal mischief in the third. Officials determined students and staff were not actually at risk.
A School Resource Officer was made aware of the threat Thursday, Feb. 2, and along with NHHS's other SRO, immediately began working with school officials and the North Haven Police Department.
The School Resource Officers remained at North Haven High late into the evening on Feb. 2 and were back in the hallways the following morning.

Our region hasn’t seen much snow this winter, and according to the famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, spring is only weeks away. Even with no white stuff on the ground, boys and girls from Cub Scout Pack 810 in North Haven still managed to hold their annual snowball fight recently. The friendly battle was held indoors, and the “snowballs” were new, rolled-up socks. The 283 pairs purchased were later donated to the Columbus House shelters located in New Haven and Wallingford.
Bingo fundraiser is back with a bang
By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Clintonville Elementary School's popular Friendship Bingo fundraiser returns tonight, Feb. 10. Typically, the event is open to the public. However, due to the overwhelming response this time around, only Clintonville students and their families will be participating.
Clintonville PTO member Susanna Landino, the fifth-grade committee chair, expects more than 170 attendees at the event, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at Clintonville.

Also, the NHPD bolstered its presence at the high school Feb. 2 and 3.
"This incident illustrates the importance and value in our SRO program, as well as our partnership with the Board of Education and school staff," the North Haven Police Department stated in a social media post.

NORTH HAVEN
The Lyman Hall Trojans were defeated by the North Haven Nighthawks 43-39 Friday night, Feb. 3 in a SCC boys basketball game decided by offensive rebounds and personal fouls.
“The rebounding has been an Achilles heel for us lately,” Lyman Hall head coach Rob Ruys said. “They got a lot of points off of that.”
North Haven evened up at 88 with the win. Lyman Hall fell to 6-9.
Junior Adam Pandolfi paced North Haven with 11 points. Tyler Casey scored a gamehigh 15 points for the Trojans and fellow seniors Chace Sealy (9) and Cam Pragano (8) also factored into the LH attack.
The first quarter was a lowscoring affair with both teams exchanging layups. Senior Eli Dineen started the scoring to put the Trojans up 4-2. However, North Haven was able to deliver on an of-
There, the Nighthawks started to pull away after several scores inside by Pandolfi. Lyman Hall also gave up a few shooting fouls that helped North Haven forge a 19-14 lead at halftime.
Come the second half, Casey and Sealy started to heat up for LH.
Casey led the comeback attempt first by getting two buckets to cut the deficit to two. After North Haven pulled away to a five-point lead, Casey scored a critical 3-pointer to cut the Nighthawks' lead to 24-22.
On the next possession, Pragano hit a 3-pointer to give the Trojans their first lead since the first quarter, 25-24.
In the fourth quarter, Sealy came up strong, scoring eight of his nine points. Unfortunately for he and the Trojans, however, North Haven was able to pull away after getting several critical turnovers and free throw attempts down the stretch.

Tips on planting a moon garden
By Cindy Golia
Have you ever heard of a moon garden? I was reading up on this type of garden and found out all the benefits associated with growing one.
Have you ever seen what a garden looks like at night, say between dusk and dawn, when the bright light of the moon illuminates the plants? Did you even know there were night pollinators? These include native bees, bats and moths.
When you walk through your moon garden, you will be able to observe the industrious, so-called "third shift" pollinators going about their important work.
Types of plants in a moon garden should include flowers in pale shades of yellow, blue, purple, white, cream, pink and green, along with plants that have gray or silver foliage. Pale blooms like evening primrose, snow in summer, snowdrop, white bleeding heart, white daffodil, sweet alyssum, hy-
drangea and mock orange (very fragrant), and silvery foliage such as lambs ear, dusty miller, silver and Russian sage are all good choices, and are hardy in our zone. For more texture, you can add variegated plants like hosta.
Another aspect of a moon garden is that the blossoms become more fragrant in the evening. Angel trumpet is another very fragrant shrub or tree and can reach over 6 feet tall. With most species being fragrant at night, they will attract moths.
There are even more varieties of flowers that can go in your moon garden. All the flowers mentioned are magnets for night pollinators.
Lets talk about who visits your moon garden: Moths, bats and bees.
Everyone knows moths are attracted to light. In the moonlight, white flowers show up well. Moths also have an amazing sense of smell, they love flowers that are highly scented, they have
very long tongues and will hover over the plants to sip the nectar while others land on the flowers to feed. Sphinx moths will visit honeyscukle, columbine and amsoina blue star, just to name a few.
By planting fragrant flowers, herbs and night-blooming plants, you will attract nocturnal insects, which, in turn, lure bats. The more insects, the better. Try planting dahlia, French marigold, nicotiana, evening primrose, thyme, raspberry or honeysuckle. Any pale-colored flowers planted in your moon garden will also help bring in the bugs.
There are only a few native bees that do their pollinating during the night. Sweat bees are around most of the time, day and night. Working in the night, they use the light of the moon and starlight to navigate through your garden. There are many types of sweat bees found all over the United States. The females of this species are fully iridescent in shades of blue and
green, with the exception of amber-colored legs and wings. Males have wide black bands on a goldenrodyellow metasoma. These bees are considered a consistent pollinator in the eastern half of the United States. As we all know, most bees, including honeybees do their pollinating during the day.
Moon garden layouts can be large and elaborate, or just a small little flowerbed. Either way, you will want to select a site that is easy to access at night. Oftentimes, moon gardens are placed near a deck, patio, porch, or large window where the sights, sounds, and smells of the garden can be easily enjoyed.
