Nursing homes report COVID-19 deaths By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

Seven local nursing homes report that 27 residents have tested positive for COVID-19 and five have died from the disease, according to information released by the state last week. As of April 14, the highest number of

cases was at Montowese Health and Rehabilitation Center in North Haven, which reported 10 active cases and two deaths. The Curtis Home of Meriden reported six infected patients and one death, the Quinnipiac Valley Center in Wallingford reported six cases and one death, The Summit at Plantsville reported three cases and one death, Skyview Reha-

Cicarella said in a statement that he has “long admired” Fasano’s dedication to the people and business owners of his district. ”I understand what it takes to work hard and serve others,” he said. “I’m a team player who knows how to build relationships and work together for the good of the district and the entire State of Connecticut … I want to be the kind of leader who listens to the people of the district and advocates on their behalf and acts accordingly.” Fasano, currently the Senate Republican President Pro Tempore, endorsed Cicarella in statements provided by Cicarella’s campaign and confirmed by Fasano Tuesday. “The data continues to show that COVID-19 is making its way indiscriminately into nursing homes in Connecticut and across the nation,” he said. “This means that nursing home operators and employees who are doing all the right things will have to battle the virus through no fault of their own.”

State health care officials have said the nursing homes have the capability to isolate COVID-19 patients who don’t need to be hospitalized from the rest of the nursing home population.

Athena, which owns the Sharon and Bridgeport nursing homes and is managing the two formerly vacant buildings, said COVID-19 positive residents began arriving at the Sharon location Thursday, according to The Connecticut Mirror.

“There are a lot of stakeholders involved and this is a very complicated environment … very at-risk patients, getting all the right frameworks in place, the right financial models in place,” he said. “Also … we’re still learning new things. We had to take a change of direction about a week or a week and a half ago, when the CDC updated their guidance to indicate that COVID-19 could be transmitted up to 48 hours before someone starts exhibiting symptoms. That changed the plan significantly in terms of what we can assume and what we should not assume relative to our existing population.”

1272125

Matthew Barrett, president and CEO of the Connecticut Association of Health Care Facilities, defended nursing home operators and staff in a recent interview with The Connecticut Mirror.

The state designated four sites for the sick residents. Two are existing nursing homes — the Sharon Health Care Center and the Northbridge Health Care Center in Bridgeport — and two are defunct facilities that are being cleaned and reopened. In addition to Westfield in Meriden, the state also reopened a center in Torrington.

The Department of Public Health released the nursing home data amid pressure for transparency from family members and the media. The state’s records show 108 facilities, or over half of the state’s nursing homes, with at least one COVID-19 positive result. Nursing homes in Waterbury and in Fairfield County had case counts in the double digits.

The facilities are part of a plan by nursing home leaders and the state to separate residents suffering from the virus from healthy ones.

Asked by The Connecticut Mirror April 16 why it took more than a month to get the facilities ready, Josh Geballe, Lamont’s chief operating officer, pointed to the complexity of arranging separate nursing homes and said a shift in guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also delayed efforts.

1272126

The release of the information comes as the state struggles to open recovery centers for nursing home patients testing positive for COVID-19. The Quinnipiac Valley Center in Wallingford was recently renovated to accept 34 patients, but the vacant Westfield Rehab Center in Meriden has no timeline for opening, state officials said this week. Masonicare has transformed vacant space at its Wallingford facility into a COVID-19 treatment and recovery center that can accept about 15 patients.

Cardona: School closure decision coming soon By Matthew Zabierek Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN — State Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona said Tuesday, April 14 that he expects to announce whether schools will remain closed beyond May 20 in the next “two or three weeks,” adding that he envisions schools will open slowly and gradually whenever the COVID-19 pandemic subsides. “It’s probably going to be phased in, it’s probably not going to be one moment we’re not there, the next day we’re business as usual,” Cardona told the RecordJournal in a remote interview broadcast live on Facebook. “It’s going to be a gradual phase-in process, but a lot of those decisions are going to be made based on what we have available to us in terms of knowing whether or not people are carrying (the virus), the rate of transmission,” said Cardona, a city native who worked his way through the ranks in the Meriden school system, from an elementary school teacher to assistant superintendent, before being appointed education commissioner last year. In announcing the decision to close schools through May 20, Cardona said he

until the fall.

While other states, like Pennsylvania and Vermont, have already moved to close schools through the 2019-20 school year, Cardona said not doing so preserves flexibility. “It’s much more difficult, as you might imagine, to engage in any type of schoolrelated activity if the cancellation was extended into the summer already. We did communicate that night that there’s a likelihood that classes will be canceled further, but we’re going to make that decision when the time is right,” Cardona said, adding additional closures will be announced well before May 20. The decision to reopen will be made in consultation with state and federal health guidance, Cardona said. “Make no mistake — this is a public health decision,” he said. “We’re not going to send kids to school if there’s a risk that there’s going to be high transmission because not only do we have to worry about the students but we have to worry about the families that they go home to, we have to worry about our staff members that might have weakened immune systems.”

When schools are ready to reopen, Cardona anticipates many families and staff members will be anxious about returning, and he said the state plans to work and communicate with those parties.

There’s that whole analogy when you’re on an airplane, you put on your oxygen mask first before you help someone else. Similarly, for educators and parents, it’s OK, take care of yourselves. You’re going to be better for your children.” “For teachers, kids just need a connection right now. They need to know that we’re going to get past this together, that you’re there for them. The learning, the math, the reading — that’s important. But let’s not overlook the most important piece, which is that human connection that I think we’re all longing for in this time of crisis.”

Montowese, at 163 Quinnipiac Ave. in North Haven, is owned by Athena Health Care Systems, which has already opened two other recovery centers, in Sharon and Bridgeport, with a third expected to open in Torrington this week. Tim Brown, Athena’s director of marketing and communications, said the company doesn’t know exactly when the Meriden facility will begin accepting patients, but said it wouldn’t sure everyone inside the home is accounted for. This month, the Record-Journal launched its COVID-19 Local News Fund, and the community has stepped up with generous donations and inspiring words For 153 years you, our community, have supported the Record-Journal by purchasing subscriptions and advertising. We appreciate and thank you all sincerely for that support. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do every day without you. For 153 years our news team has been dedicated to providing trusted, fact-based local news about our towns, schools, businesses, government, families, non-profits, events, celebrations, deaths and so much more. They are doing so right now mostly from home, and sometimes risking their own health to gather the news that we all need. As a public service, we are providing all coronavirus coverage for free on myrecordjournal.com, where our audience has spiked significantly since this began.

When we launched our COVID-19 Local News Fund, we stepped out of our comfort zone. Today, in this unique and challenging time, we are asking for a little extra support from all of you to help us through this devastating temporary situation. We’ve never asked for donations before but it’s easy to set stubborn pride aside for one simple reason: We’re passionate about local news and our commitment to factchecked, professionally-reported journalism.

For 153 years our responsibility has been to provide you with trusted local news and we take that responsibility very seriously. Because we are financially challenged right now, we feel it is also our responsibility to ask you to help us help our community. Every dollar raised goes directly to the Record-Journal newsroom to help pay for news resources and restore hours to provide more local fact-based reporting during this critical time.

A HUGE thank you to the more than 100 supporters who’ve contributed so far! Your heartwarming comments motivate and inspire us as we cover the impact of the virus on our local community.

For 153 years we’ve been here for the community and you’ve been here for us. Thank you for continuing to support us so we can all get through this together. Thank you, Liz White, Publisher

Freedom of a free press is vital to our democracy. Our local news coverage does not come freely. While they are subject to criticism ( like us all) their coverage deserves our support. Without them we will be far poorer in information and community. Please donate to the Record Journal. We subscribe and will donate. We can thank them all for their efforts in words and deeds.
