AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL
Virus claims another sports casualty By Bryant Carpenter Record-Journal staff
MERIDEN — American Legion baseball players fell behind deep in the count last week.
The sun has set on the American League baseball season before it even rose. Connecticut, following the lead of the rest of the Northeast and much of the nation, officially canceled the 2020 season last week. Meriden Post 45 head coach Doug Wedge (left) is looking to fill the void with an independent league, possibly at Meriden’s Legion Field on Hanover Record-Journal file photo Road.
They aren’t necessarily down on strikes just yet, however. On Tuesday, May 12 the Connecticut State American Legion Baseball Committee, following the lead of the rest of New England and much of the country, announced the cancelation of the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. Legion teams, however, are free to try to salvage something of the summer, be it in See Legion, A11

State Department of Public Health workers and the Connecticut National Guard have been inspecting nursing homes for staffing levels and proper supply and use of personal protective equipment. Letters of violation have gone out, with the state releasing information on six nursing homes found in violation in Chester, East Haven, Milford,
The inspections found lapses in infection control and prevention and poor practices for the prolonged use of protective gear. The letters were released without the DPH saying if they were the only six nursing homes with deficiencies or merely the first in a series of reports on how the industry has handled the pandemic. Av Harris, a spokesman for the department, said there is a delay in releasing some reports. “It takes time to get these completed and posted,” he told the Mirror. “It’s not an overnight process.” mgodin@record-journal.com 203-317-2255 Twitter: @Cconnbiz

People in Connecticut – whether they are healthy or sick – can help inform heath officials and doctors by using the How We Feel app and self-reporting their daily symptoms through a series of short prompts. The smartphone or webbased application was created in response to the need for health officials and doctors to obtain more information on COVID-19 in the face of widespread testing shortages. It only takes users about 30 seconds each day to report any symptoms they may be experiencing.

Help avoid sewer system blockages backups and blockages in the town’s sanitary sewer system and collection network, which can pose a risk to the town’s wastewater management system and require costly repairs, both for homeowners and the town.
The Department of Public Works is working closely with Veolia North America, which operates and maintains the town’s wastewater treatment plant, to educate people about the need to avoid flushing inappropriate items down their toilets.
Although many so-called “disposable” hand wipes are advertised as being safe for flushing, in reality, they regularly cause backups in the sanitary sewer system and contribute to buildups of foreign materials. In some cases they can attach to buildups of grease in the system and create large blockages called “fatbergs.”

As in almost everyone's yard, including mine, there are those places. It may be a garden on the north side of your home, that the sun just doesn't shine bright on for all that long. Or that mostly shaded area that’s wetter than everywhere else in your yard. You have no idea what to plant there, so here are a few suggestions that just might solve your problem. Bleeding Heart: This has an exquisite, inch-long, heartshaped flower that dangles from arching stems. Blooms can be white or pink. Hydrangea : This is one of the most popular shade perennials. Hydrangea likes light shade and produces big, round clusters of flowers in pink, blue and white. Blooms can be dinner-plate sized. Lily of the Valley: This shade-loving perennial produces white bell-shaped flowers that smell so sweet. Lily of the Valley make great ground cover under trees, and spreads quickly.
Vinca : This is a popular ground cover with smooth leaves and purple flowers. It spreads by creeping on the ground and putting out roots as it goes. Vinca can very easily be transplanted. Lentil Rose: Also known as hellebore, this is one of the loveliest perennial flowers for shade. It grows in clumps of dark green leaves and produces large, cup-shaped blooms in white, pink and rose-purple.

thing our servicepeople fought so selflessly to preserve: our safety.
Editor :
Regardless of how you’re saluting our fallen heroes, if your plans involve alcohol, make sure you take steps to protect yourself and your neighbors by hydrating between beers and drinking responsibly.
This year, Memorial Day comes during a particularly trying time. But, even amid the hardship and uncertainty brought on by the current public health crisis, Americans across the country will take time to honor the men and women in uniform who gave their lives for this country. On May 25, whether you’re social distancing at home or cautiously beginning to return to normal life, join us in celebrating those who bravely defended our freedom, safety and well-being. While so many things have changed over the past few months, Memorial Day is an opportunity to take a step back and reflect on the sacrifices made by our fallen heroes. If you’re raising a glass in their honor, remember to prioritize the very

another organization or in some kind of independent league of their own design. It’s along the lines of the latter that Meriden Post 45 coach Doug Wedge is thinking.
More than thinking, actually. Wedge has a fairly detailed vision for a league that would maintain a sense of continuity for Legion programs. While independent, it would abide by Legion rules — wood bats, pitch counts, for instance. “It’s a Legion product, with Legion teams, using the Legion stuff,” Wedge said. “You can have the heart of the rules be Legion. It’s just to keep the Legion program going in our area.

closed and subject to reopening by state order. That poses potential scheduling issues. Meriden also has some experience as a host. For the past two summers, the Southern sectional tournament and state championship series has played at Ceppa Field.
An independent league would be for this summer only. It would be no permanent replacement for Legion ball, but rather a bridge over what fell through in 2020. “I’m trying to be very creative and proactive with this,” Wedge said “One, you don’t want to bury the Legion name. You want to keep your kids intact as much as possible. Two, you want to give a season to those kids because they didn’t have a high school season,” Wedge continued. “Some of these kids are very good ballplayers and they have college aspirations. Three, we want to be able to give the college coaches a chance to come out as see these kids.”

Wedge is also confident there is considerable interest in a local league among neighboring towns. “I’m just getting early feedback,” he said. “Wallingford’s all gung-ho. North Haven jumped on ... We’ll see what the feedback is. We’ll go from there.”
Wedge envisions a 20-24 game schedule for all participating teams, who would be asked to kick in funds for umpires and field maintenance supplies.

First Selectman Michael J. Freda announced that the Regional Water Authority (RWA) is continuing to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and adapting to protect the health and safety of North Haven’s residents and its customers. The 2020 Household HazWaste Central (HWC) Program collection season scheduled to begin on May 16 will be postponed until at least May 30. This follows the social distancing recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and others. RWA will continue monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic in Connecticut and if necessary, may further delay the 2020 HWC opening to continue protecting the health of the town’s residents, customers, HWC volunteers and all communities it serves. When RWA is confident that it will be safe to open the collection center, a newspa-
per ad will be published to reflect the opening date and posted on the town’s website. At that time, the Department of Public Works will also share an electronic copy of the advertisement with residents on its webpages. We know that many people are at home doing spring cleaning and may have questions about old and/or expired chemicals they find. For that reason, residents are encouraged to reach out to the RWA with their questions at 203-401-2712 or ask.hazwaste@rwater.com. RWA will also be sharing helpful tips on household hazardous waste management on its Facebook page. All North Haven residents are encouraged to review this page for information. When the collection center is open for business, social distancing practices will be encouraged as part of rouSee Waste, A15

Barbershop, salon reopenings delayed until early June By Pat Eaton-Robb and Susan Haigh Associated Press
HARTFORD — That haircut will have to wait. Salons and barbershops across Connecticut were not allowed to reopen on Wednesday after all. Gov. Ned Lamont announced Monday that Connecticut is now aligning its plans with neighboring Rhode Island to reopen hair salons and barbershops sometime in early June. He
said the decision came after extensive discussions with the shop owners and employees, many of whom wanted more time to prepare.

But Senate Republican Leader Len Fasano of North Haven said the announcement has “completely shaken the public’s trust,” considering Lamont has said such decisions should be based on science.
“But today’s last-minute delay is not based on science. It’s not based on a change in hospitalizations or testing or any other metric identified by the experts,” Fasano said. “It’s a policy decision based on input that should have been sought long before decisions were made.” Connecticut still planned Wednesday to begin the multi-stage process of lifting restrictions, including allowing limited outdoor dining at restaurants. Retail establishments, outdoor exhibits at zoos and museums, outdoor recreation and uni-
versity research programs will also be allowed to open with detailed, social distancing restrictions. Dr. Ajay Kumar, the chief clinical officer at Hartford Healthcare, said the models he’s studied support the governor’s decision to begin reopening parts of society. “I think this is the right place to be at this time,” Kumar said. “We need to be cautious. We need to be optimistic. But at the same time we need to continue to follow the safety principals.”

All customers and co-workers must wear a mask and practice social distancing, while in the store. Before reopening - our stores have been deep cleaned. We’ve intensified cleaning high volume areas, such as bathrooms, railings, doors and shopping carts. Registers will be disinfected after each transaction. Hand sanitizers are available throughout the store. We’ve implemented traffic patterns to make your entrance and exit from our stores safe.
• We have installed plexiglass shields at each register.
HOWEVER, SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE AT BOSCOV’S YOU’LL STILL FIND THE BEST SELECTION AT INCREDIBLE PRICES! 76% OFF Tktd. price
