Theaters hit hard by coronavirus shutdown

WE THANK YOU!

By Jessica Simms Special to the Record-Journal

The closing of the North Haven Cinemark theater because of the pandemic meant that 87 employees were laid off.

The Great Give has ended. Thank you so much for all of your support during this fundraising effort. Together, we will make a difference in the lives of the youth of North Haven and Wallingford. While this event is over, the web-

site of The Great Give (thegreatgive.org) will remain open until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, for you and others to support local nonprofits with continuing and new needs. I am so grateful for you and your support of the Ul-

brich Boys & Girls Club! Thank You! P.S. If you did not get a chance to donate, you can still donate to the Club. Yours in service, Carlos Collazo, executive director

In a letter last month to First Selectman Michael Freda, the theater notified the town of its temporary closing by state order and the layoffs. There are three other Cinemark theaters in Connecticut — Milford, Enfield and Manchester. A total of 295 Cinemark employees, many part time, lost their jobs. See Theaters, A3

Camps will open with new guidelines The magic of summer camp can still be a part of children’s lives this year as many day camps will open, though with strict guidelines for staff and campers. “Summer camp is summer camp. It may look different but

the fun that we’re going to have,” said Carolyn Daniels, camp director of Mountain Mist Day Camp, which is run by the Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA. “The laughter that we’re going to have. The experiences, the friendships.” Many of the safety guidelines

Sarah Dupre, outdoor center administrator, left, and Rachel Lyles, trail blazer director, work at their desks at Camp Sloper in Southington on May 22. Camp Sloper will operate their on site programs this summer, though with strict guidelines in order to keep staff and campers healthy and safe.

Equipment will be used only within these groups of 10 or individually. At the Boys & Girls Club, art supplies will be provided to each individual camper. “As far as art supplies, things like pencils, crayons, magic markers, things like that that the kids use on a daily basis, we’re actually going to buy each individual kid their own set that they’ll keep in a larger bookcase,” Graham said. “That way, they’re the only ones that are physically touching it and then we will disinfect the case to ensure that no germs are being transferred.” Daily temperature checks will also take place at these

camps to ensure any potential COVID-19 symptoms are caught early on. Both Mountain Mist and the two camps at the Boys & Girls Club will have a designated spot for campers with COVID-like symptoms. “That’s where they’ll go and obviously we will contact the parents and the necessary authorities,” Benigni said. While the protocols will change the experience, camps are looking forward to the summer. “We’re just excited to have some normalcy back out here at Sloper and have smiling faces and kids here,” Hubeny said. “That’s really what I am excited about for sure.”

“The guidelines are that we have two counselors for every 10 children or less,” Daniels said. “We need to socially distance those 10 children from other groups and we have about 50 to 70 feet in between each of our campsites, so they will actually have a homebase campsite that they will be at ev-

At Camp Sloper and Mountain Mist Day Camp, campers do not have to wear face masks, but the counselors are required to wear them while working. “I joked with my camp staff to say that you’re going to have a mask tan today,” said John Benigni, the CEO of the Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA. “It won’t be just sunglasses, you’ll have a tan with a face of a mask.”

“We’re still digesting some of the guidelines but we know small groups — groups of 10 kids max per counselor,” said Justin Hubeny, camp director of the Southington YMCA’s Camp Sloper. “They have to be distanced with one another. Handwashing before and after activities. Things like that. Staff members have to wear masks. Now the challenge is putting a program into place and that’s what we’re working on right now.”

“Essentially what happened here is that COVID-19 has had a catastrophic effect on theaters throughout the state of Connecticut,” Freda said. Cinemark is working toward a midsummer opening date that is contingent on health and safety regulations. Currently, theaters are on the list of businesses that can reopen June 20. “It is important to note that the theatrical exhibition’s return to ‘normalcy’ may span multiple months, driven by staggered theatre openings due to government limits, reduced operating hours, lingering social distancing and a ramp up of consumer comfort with public gatherings,” said Caitlin Piper, who is in charge of Cinemark’s publicity.

Medications can be vital to staying well and maintaining good health. But getting medications safely can be a challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for people at higher risk. Some of these higher risk groups include individuals with chronic lung disease, serious heart conditions, and those who are immune compromised or have diabetes, to name a few. Nicholas Arsenault, MSN, RN, CNL, CCM, CDP, a transitional care nurse with Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging, offers a few simple steps people can take to empower and protect themselves during these times: Consider getting medications delivered to the home. Individuals can talk with their

pharmacy to see if they offer home delivery. Many larger chain pharmacies provide this service, but some smaller, local pharmacies also offer it.

Look at insurance pharmacy benefits. Some insurance and prescription drug plans, either commercial or Medicare, offer some savings for using a home delivery medication program. If medication delivery from a pharmacy is not possible, talk with a family member, caregiver, friend or trusted neighbor to see if they would be able to pick up the medication. The HIPAA Privacy Rule allows the pharmacist to give the filled prescription to a relative or friend. They could drop them off at the door while maintaining physical distancing. Provide

Be mindful of how much medication remains in the prescription. A good rule of thumb is to ensure there is 7-10 days’ worth to prevent running out. When that 710-day window approaches, notify the pharmacist that a refill is needed to allow enough time to obtain the order from the healthcare provider.

People should talk with their healthcare provider and develop a plan to ensure the medication will continue to be refilled. Some providers may agree to refill the medication, but others may want to “see” the person first. To get medication filled or to check on the status of it, contact the pharmacy by phone or through an online portal. Talk with the local pharmacy team to find out the easiest, safest and best way to address these needs.

Many insurance plans are relaxing refill limitations so larger quantities of medications may now be allowed. It may be possible to get a 90day supply, which is appropriate if the medications are for long-term condition management. Having a 90day supply can also reduce the number of pharmacy visits and there may also be a cost savings.

Racquetball ambassador honored

Turns out he’s got a passion for racquetball, too. Two years ago, Gitterman helped revive a Connecticut Racquetball Association that had lain dormant for half a decade. For that work, he’s been recognized by USA Racquetball, which has is-

sued its 2019 Presidents Award to Gitterman and fellow Connecticut chapter president Trudi Angiollo of Branford. Gitterman and Angiollo, along with vice president Matt Zalegowski and treasurer Betsy Keating, both of North Haven, re-established the Connecticut Racquetball Association and have built membership to more than 250 players. The group’s signature event,

the CT Open Tournament, has already grown into New England’s largest racquetball tournament. It drew players from New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Arizona to North Haven Health and Racquet Club this February and featured $15,000 in prize money. Gitterman, a physical therapist, is site director for ProHealth Physical Therapy in Manchester.

Local nonprofits are facing fundraising challenges After the Storm, Inc. founder Christine Willett mingles during her annual Art Bra event at the Aqua Turf Club on Aug. 8, 2019. Dozens of decorated bras were modeled and auctioned off during the night’s main runway event to raise money for cancer survivors. This year’s event has been canceled due to the coronavirus.

By Bailey Wright Record-Journal staff

Local nonprofits are looking into alternative fundraising after pandemic restrictions forced them to cancel most annual events. Last week After the Storm, Inc. announced the 12th annual Art Bra event, scheduled for Aug. 6 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington, was canceled. “We erred on the side of caution and looked at all aspects involved. We’re still looking for ways to help survivors,” founder Christine Willett said.

Willett said organizers are looking into other, probably virtual, events to stay engaged. The efforts will be announced on the After the Storm Facebook page.

COMMENTARY

Concerns about adoption of fiscal year budget I was just thinking about Tyranny of the Majority. As a student of political philosophy, I’ve extensively studied this topic. It is an idea expounded by the likes of James Madison (the primary author of our Constitution),

John Adams, John Stuart Mill and Alexis de Tocqueville. The underlying principle concerns a weakness in majority rule when the majority pursues only its own interests at the expense of the minority. The percep-

tion of tyranny involves a breakdown of democratic principles when, as Tocqueville said, “decisions are based on a claim to rule by numbers, not upon rightness or excellence.” A perfect example of Tyranny of the Majority occurred at the May 20 Board of Finance (BOF) meeting. It was conducted by telephone conference call, so I urge you to listen to it on NHTV or the town’s website.

BOF won’t meet again until August. That equates to one meeting in a 6-month period. And so I ask the Chairman, what’s the hurry? (Maybe Chairman Monico is too busy now that he is also serving as Town Treasurer).

The BOF debated a proposed 20/21 budget of $109 million, which increased spending by $5.3 million. The proposed mill rate was a 1/3 percent mill rate At this meeting, and because reduction, down to 30.85 we were understandably un- mills, made possible by an able to have our customary increase in tax revenue pribudget referendum, the BOF marily due to Amazon. And keep in mind, folks, the May 20 meeting was the first Both BOF Democrats wanted to reduce the 5 persince February, and the

cent increase in the Board of Education (BOE) budget by $300,000. The Republicans said no. Even with this $300,000 reduction, the BOE budget would still have been $2.4 million higher than now. Ms. Barrett offered statistics showing BOE budgets in similar towns were going up an average of only 2.5 percent. But the Republican majority would have none of it, citing special education, health insurance and contractual obligations. But guess what, folks, other towns have all these obligations too, but their BOE budgets are going up, on average, 2.5 percent. So why do we need a 5 percent BOE increase? Ms. Barrett also wanted to propose a list of line item reductions on the town side of the budget with a cumulative total of $150,000. But Chairman Monico cut her off saying that the Republican majority BOF members already looked at each line, so no other cuts would be entertained. In effect, he was telling Ms. Barrett not to even bother with her list of trying to save the taxpayers any further money. I was shocked, while James Madison, the anti-tyrant, must have rolled over in his grave. I hope everybody is doing well. Stay safe. My email is sbuemi5@comcast.net. Sally J. FROM THE NORTH HAVEN GARDEN CLUB

Plants that can help repel the dreaded tick Lavender

Winter is over, but the tick population was not affected very much because we had such a mild winter. If your are looking for a way to repel ticks without using toxic materials, I found a list of plants that, due to their chemical makeup, can indeed repel ticks and the best part is we already love them, those wonderful smelling flowers and tasty herbs are just beautiful flowering plants. Just one thing, we must be careful if we have pets, because some of these wonderful deterrents can be toxic to our furry friends, especially if you have an outdoor cat that likes to wander through your flower bed.

Rosemary

years, so we know it smells great. Its main use is as a culinary herb, but its special power is keeping ticks away for the length of its lifetime. When thyme flowers it has small white petals that can bring a nice feel to a fence border, sidewalk or flowerbed.

Sage

Lets start with the herbs. GARLIC : If you’re anything like me, I can't get enough garlic. Love the stuff. Ticks on the other hand hate the stuff! You can use the cloves in your kitchen – best way in my opinion. Or, consider crushing the cloves up and tossing them around the border of your garden and yard. SAGE: Sage is perennial herb; it's not to pretty but will come back year to year. Like garlic, some people love it and some people hate it. Sage can be grown on your kitchen window sill and used as a cooking herb, and best of all it is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Genovese basil

MINT: I would suggest you plant mint in pots rather than in the ground. You see, mint grows very aggressively and will take over your garden in no time. The aromatic oil in the leaves smells wonderful and drives insects away. You can plant it in containers and place it around your porch, it will drive off insects, mainly ticks and mosquitoes. Also, you can make tea with mint. Mojito cocktails also use fresh mint. ROSEMARY: Again, like sage, some people don't like the smell of rosemary and others love it. Rosemary is a very common herb used in

If your pet rubs up against rosemary it will add some repellent to their coat.

LAVENDER : Who doesn't love lavender? Everybody except ticks, mosquito and moths. This means it's a triple threat flower that can grow in your yard. It is used as an air freshener, a culinary herb and essential oil, and in cosmetics and in traditional medicine. In a rare few people lavender can aggravate dermatitis or eczema if applied directly to the skin. If this happens to you, just wear gloves in the garden. As far as your pets, it can make them nauseous if ingested. So beware.

So start a herb garden, plant herbs in pots and place them on your porch, around your sitting areas. It’s an easy activity you can do with your kids.

The current president of the United States voted by mail in 2018, and again in March for Florida’s Republican primary (despite the fact that he was in that state when early voting took place). Why shouldn’t voters in Connecticut have the same option?

event raises $60,000 to $80,000. Moran said the duck race isn’t the only club fundraiser affected by the pandemic.

New and Safe Things To Do!

The national organization held a country-wide virtual walk at the end of April, but local organizers are now planning a 12-hour event on Sept. 19 that they say is tentative.

A few of their smaller ones — a Palm Sunday brunch and a pasta dinner — were canceled and now they’re facing the prospect of canceling the biggest one of the year, the annual golf tournament in September. Moran said the tournament usually brings in more than $100,000.

Meriden’s annual PurpleStride for pancreatic cancer is still scheduled for June 20, but will be a virtual event. In a normal year, the event brings hundreds to Hubbard Park to walk and jog around the park in an effort to bring awareness to the disease and raise money for research.

“That’s gonna be a big hit … it’s a lot of money,” he said.

THINGS TO DO is back. Submit your events now at myrecordjournal.com/ThingsToDo

The club recently donated $5,000 each to five local food banks to help them purchase more food for the hundreds of residents without jobs due to the pandemic.

“This means you can still participate in PurpleStride, but as a virtual participant, doing something meaningful and personal to you in honor of the people you love,” the organizers said in a statement.

Moran is unsure what the club will do to make up for lost funds. The Meriden-New BritainBerlin YMCA’s annual Martini and Massage Charity Benefit has been postponed this year. It was scheduled for June 6 at the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center.

According to their website, the virtual walk has raised about $21,000 so far this year, with a goal of $150,000. Last year the walk raised $167,000. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright
