Local artist takes on wild assignment

A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS Art Studies graduate Danielle Minicucci, of North Haven, waits by a window before the start of the 55th annual Middlesex Community College commencement ceremony at Platt High School in Meriden, Thursday, May 26. Middlesex awarded more than 360 degrees and certificates to 335 graduates at the college’s first in-person commencement exercises in more than two years.

This spring, North Haven artist Andy Yelenak was handed a daunting challenge: to paint one of the largest pieces he has ever done, in oil, and finish it in just 10 weeks. The imposing canvas would measure 3feet-by-4-feet and was to show a picturesque view of antelope at a Kenyan waterhole. Yelenak’s client had traveled to Kenya a number of times and commissioned the

National Honor Society welcomes 46 new members By Nicole Zappone The Citizen

Forty-six students were celebrated at North Haven High School’s National Honor Society induction ceremony, held Tuesday, May 17 at the NHHS auditorium. Students from the Class of 2022 and the Class of 2023 were recognized for both their academic prowess and their character. “I want to say to you inductees that it is often difficult in the midst of something to appreciate it,” Principal Dr. Russell Dallai stated at the ceremony. “We tend to live thinking about the past often,

and the future. I want you to think about right now and imprint this moment.” Band director Susan Oakley was the guest speaker at the ceremony, and challenged the Class of 2023 to “picture what you want your senior year to look like.” See National Honor Society, A10

work to be unveiled in midJune. The assignment required extensive research of sable and waterbuck antelopes, warthogs, African doves and the landscape of Kenya.

Artistic decisions had to be made rapidly and the expansive canvas demanded many hours of brushwork. But the African scene slowly came to life. “The large expanse of blank canvas can be intimidating,“ said Yelenak, “but it’s like a marathon, you take it one step at a time.”

Ready for mosquito season? By Cindy Golia

From A4

Renter’s Rebate

Everyone hates them. Some of us attract them more than others. And you never know what they can be carrying.

Through Oct. 1, the North Haven Assessor’s office is accepting applications for the Renter’s Rebate Program. To make an appointment, call 203-239-5321 ext. 610 or e-mail assessor@ northhaven-ct.gov.

Mosquitoes. At the North Haven Garden Club’s May meeting, Roger Wolfe presented an informative program on these biting bugs. Did you know there are 54 species of mosquitoes in Connecticut, 200 in the U.S., and over 3,000 worldwide? That's a lot of bugs!

Ever wondered why you are eaten alive and someone next to you is just fine? Well, Wolfe said mosquitoes are attracted to body heat and the carbon monoxide you give off.

The North Haven Sons and Daughters of Italy Lodge 2805 will host a Classic Car Show Saturday, Aug. 6, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Therese

Church. Cars and motorcycles welcome. Pre-registration is $15 ($20 day-of ). To register or to become a vendor visit northhavenlodge2805.club/car-show/ or contact John Giorgio (203430-6549, jallstarelectric@ aol.com).

Counseling Whether it is depression, anxiety, loss/grief, increased alcohol or substance use, relational difficulties, LGBTQ+ challenges, or other issues, North Haven Counseling Services is there to help. Contact Community Services at 203-239-5321, ext. 500.

Also, only female mosquitoes bite, and most often die after. But some can bite up to eight times. Wolfe explained that mosquitoes have been around since the time of the dinosaurs. They overwinter as adults and emerge in the spring. And both female and male mosquitoes feed on plant nectar, which means they are a pollinator.

Wolfe said the best way to avoid these pesky critters is to stay indoors at dawn and dusk. And when headed outside, he suggests spraying repellent on your hands, then administering it to your face. Also, spray your clothing with repellent. Check out The North Haven Garden Club on Facebook for lots of useful and entertaining information and pictures of all our club does in town. For membership information, email Italia at italia_a@comcast.net.

Phase 2 Opening Soon

R247497

To limit the number of mosquitoes in your yard, Wolfe said it’s important to clear out any standing water. If this isn't possible, he suggests buying Mosquito Dunks. A pool of water needs to sit for more than seven days for mosquitoes to breed.

When will recreational pot be for sale in CT? It’s unclear By Erica E. Phillips © The Connecticut Mirror

Connecticut legalized adultuse cannabis last year, but it’s still unclear when recreational marijuana will be available to buy without a prescription.

Existing medical-use cultivators and retailers could be the first to offer recreational products in the market, but only a handful have applied so far to convert their operations to a “hybrid” model — producing or selling both medical and recreational pot.

Under the law, the fee to convert is $1 million for retailers and $3 million for producers, which could be prohibitive for many businesses. That rate is discounted for operators who form 50/ 50 “equity joint venture” partnerships with a person or business that meets certain income or residency criteria. Another potential hitch: retail sales can’t commence until there’s an aggregate of 250,000 square feet of grow and manufacture space in Connecticut that’s devoted to the adult-use market. Officials with the Department of Consumer Protection, which administers licensing, are working with producers to track the industry’s footprint as many medical-use cultivators expand their operations. On its website, the department explains: “The supply chain must be entirely licensed before sales can be-

gin, including stores, testing labs, and growers, and there must be enough growing capacity to supply the retail market.” State officials say their goal is for adult-use marijuana products to be available for sale by the end of this year or early next year, but there’s no set date.

Hopeful new entrants to the market, from growers to product manufacturers, transporters, retailers and delivery services, are currently in the midst of a lottery process for licenses. MONEY MATTERS

Things to consider before buying a second home Buying a second home brings with it exciting possibilities. Perhaps it’s a place where you plan to make lasting family memories. Maybe it will be your quiet refuge from the hustle and bustle of life. Whatever your vision for the property, it’s important to consider whether you’re ready to make the commitment. Here are some questions to help you explore your readiness to take on this additional financial obligation. Why are you buying a second home? You may be looking for a weekend getaway reserved for you and your family. Or you may want a rental property that generates income. There’s no right or wrong answer, but how you use the property will have financial implications. You’ll want to understand how these distinctions will affect your property taxes, insurance requirements and income taxes, including capital gains tax when it comes time to sell. How will you pay for your second home? Purchasing with cash avoids lender’s fees and the burden of a monthly mortgage payment. But it also makes your money less accessible in case of emergency. Financing your second property also has its downside. Lenders tend to require large down payments on second mortgages. Mortgage points, closing costs and pre-paid escrow add up. And you’ll have another mortgage payment to manage every month. What extra costs will you incur? Think beyond property taxes and insurance. You may need furniture. You may envision home improvements. Even if you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you’ll need materials and permits. Your second home will generate monthly utility bills. You may have homeowner association fees. If you’re buying a waterfront

How will you manage maintenance? Homes need upkeep, inside and out. If you become a landlord, your renters will expect quick fixes when the washer goes out or the drain backs up. Be prepared to pay someone to keep an eye on the property even when it’s empty. Property management brings peace of mind but can be pricey. How will a second home affect your taxes? You may be able to deduct interest payments, real estate taxes and points on a second mortgage if you meet certain conditions. Rental income may be subject to income taxes. You’ll need a tax expert to help navigate this complex subject and set your expectations.

Officials review requests for funds

By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN — The city has so far received more than $36.58 million in requests to fund projects with COVID-19 relief funds made available through the American Rescue Plan Act. That total already surpasses the close to $36.36 million in funding the city is scheduled to receive through the federal program. The more than three dozen funding applications that have been submitted to date include several requests from city departments for infrastructure repair and upgrades.

WALLINGFORD — A dusting of snow Wednesday put a wrinkle in the plans for a group of independent filmmakers shooting a short film in town this week. Crew members didn’t complain though, as they shot a funeral scene inside First Congregational Church on Thursday. Cinematographer Amber Steele, of Phoenix, Arizona, said that in her line of work, it’s all about pivoting.

CHESHIRE — As doctors and nurses around the world continue to battle the COVID-19 virus on all fronts, Chesprocott Health District Director Maura Esposito remains focused on vaccinations, specifically for those aged 5 to 11. Late last month, Chesprocott held a seconddose clinic for that age group, and Esposito was Esposito happy with the results. “The kids did really well this time,” Esposito said. “They sort of knew what they were up against this goround. They understood that if they sat and got the vaccine they would be re-
