“Many people say that today is the day we start our journey, ” valedictorian Victoria Pachnik said in her commencement address. “Personally, I disagree. Our journey began a long time ago. Today simply happens to be the day our journey splits into over 200 unique paths as we open a new chapter of our lives.”

Quinnipiac Chamber honors community leaders
By Kate Ramunni Record-Journal staffWALLINGFORD
While the main speaker was unable to make it, the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce still honored its award winners at its annual dinner, held June 14 at The Farms Country Club.
Rand Pecknold, the coach of the NCAA Division I National Champion Quinnipiac University hockey team, was scheduled to give the keynote speech and accept the Business Leadership Award at the event, but had a family emergency, chamber Executive Director Ray Andrewsen said. That didn’t stop the chamber from celebrating Pecknold, the team and its national championship.
It also honored its own with its annual awards. The Nonprofit of the Year award went to the Spanish Community of Wallingford, which provides a variety of services to the Hispanic community.
“It’s a true honor to be recognized,” said SCOW Executive Director Adriana Rodriguez. “We have been very busy,” she said, especially during the pandemic, when the organization gave out 3,000 COVID-19 test kits and sanitizer, and held over 100 vaccination clinics.
Rodriguez credited her staff with the organization's success. "Together we have make a difference," she said.
The Diversity and Inclusion Award went to North Haven-based Area Cooperative Educational Services.

Here’s what to know about new state gun law
The Connecticut Mirror
On June 6, Gov. Ned Lamont signed into law the first comprehensive update of Connecticut’s gun laws since the sweeping reforms enacted a decade ago in response to the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
House Bill 6667, An Act Addressing Gun Violence, was proposed by Lamont and expanded to include measures sought by urban mayors What changes does the law make to Connecticut’s gun policies? Here’s what to know.
The bill updates several aspects of Connecticut’s existing gun laws.
H.B. 6667 bans the open carry of firearms and strengthens rules for gun storage and reporting stolen firearms. It also expands a ban on AR-
15s and other so-called assault weapons passed in 1993 and updated in 2013.
AR-15s purchased prior to the bans still can be legally owned, if registered with the police. But the new law closed what proponents called a loophole that allowed the legal sale of nowbanned weapons if manufactured prior to 1994.
The legislation also further tightens restrictions on military-style weapons and highcapacity magazines that were largely banned after the Sandy Hook school shooting.
Additionally, the bill regulates the sale of body armor to civilians, generally limits the sale of handguns to three in any one month, increases training requirements for gun permit holders, and raises the minimum age to purchase a semiautomatic rifle from 18 to 21, the same threshold as handguns.

The bill also bans the online sale of kits used to assemble “ghost guns,” firearms that have no serial number and are largely untraceable.
The bill was largely approved along party lines.
House Bill 6667 cleared the House on a vote of 96-51, with seven Republicans in favor and five Democrats opposed. In the Senate, Sen. Tony Hwang, R-Fairfield, joined 23 Democrats in favor. One Democrat, Sen. Cathy Osten of Sprague, did not vote.
A group of Democratic mayors urged certain provisions.
The measure incorporates elements of a tougher approach to gun crimes urged by the Democratic mayors of Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven and Waterbury,
where 80% of all shootings occur in Connecticut.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230623142050-cd769ced42ea0594b599cf183b7f6bb5/v1/f295baf00f9eea1d8b60838e7764a394.jpeg)
At the mayors’ request, the bill would target what they described as a relatively small cohort of repeat gun offenders with dedicated court dockets, higher thresholds for bail and probation, and tougher penalties.
Supporters pointed to research showing the effectiveness of gun safety laws.
Democratic supporters of HB 6667 have argued it was a data-driven, public health measure, and said a growing body of research shows that the states with the strongest gun safety laws have the lowest rates of suicides and murders by firearms. The majority of gun death are suicides.
Opponents said the bill is too focused on guns, not the individuals that misuse them.
Republican opponents argued the Connecticut General Assembly is too focused on law-abiding gun owners and the mass shootings that generate headlines and not
enough on more commonplace gun crimes: Street shootings with illegal handguns, often involving shooters and victims with criminal backgrounds.
H.B. 6667 could face legal challenges.
Even before final passage, the bill has survived one legal challenge a request for a temporary restraining order sought by gun owners, which was rejected by a federal judge. Others are expected.
Connecticut’s gun laws have survived repeated legal challenges, whether brought in state or federal court.
Connecticut’s gun legislation is strict compared to other states.
Connecticut has some of the strongest gun safety laws in the U.S., with universal background checks to purchase a firearm or ammunition and the nation’s earliest risk warrant law allowing the seizure of guns from people deemed a threat to themselves or others.
The state has the fifth-lowest per-capita rate of gun suicides after Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Hawaii.
The group added: “It exceeded our wildest expectations and we are still beaming off the joy and love y’all brought to our community.”
Following the gathering on the green, North Haven

June 19-25 is National Pollinator Week and the Connecticut Department of Transportation is highlighting ongoing efforts to help pollinators thrive.
The CTDOT Pollinator Program was implemented in 2017 and has grown to 123 conservation areas comprised of approximately 205 acres of state right of way.
The goal of the Pollinator Program is to provide critical habitats for pollinating in-
sects, such as bees and monarch butterflies, through strategic plantings and vegetation management.

“Pollinators are important to our food supply and health of the environment, and we are proud to join the national effort to increase pollinator habitats on properties throughout Connecticut. We’re reclaiming these areas along the highways with wildflowers and vegetation to help protect pollinators that are at risk,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commis-

sioner Garrett Eucalitto. “Each year we’re identifying additional conservation areas that we can add to this program as part of our broader goals to create a more sustainable environment. However, our rights of way cannot provide the pollinators with everything they need. I encourage the public to join our efforts to help pollinators flourish in Connecticut.”
The CTDOT pollinator corridors are marked with conservation area signage and consist of warm season
grasses, native wildflowers and low-growing vegetation.
They bloom in late June and continue through the summer months.

Some examples of plants found in conservation areas include milkweed, goldenrod, joe pye weed and aster.

Varying species with staggered bloom time promotes biodiversity, healthy habitats, and increases the survival rate of pollinators in the area. These corridors along the highways provide
an extensive network for pollinators.
Motorists traveling throughout Connecticut can see these corridors near highway ramps, medians, and along roadside shoulders. While the blooms are beautiful to see, motorists are asked not to stop on the highway to take photos or videos of the conservation areas.

“Everyone’s journey here was different, but we all made it here to this moment,” the Class of 2023's top student added. “Long story short, we survived.”
Class president Peter Harkins highlighted the many accomplishments of the Class of 2023, including in the realm of athletics.

“One thing I’d like to brag about is that this class, our class, might just be the most athletic to come out of North Haven High School,” Harkins said. “We won not only one state championship this year, but two: football and hockey. And how about our girls softball team with a perfect regular season record of 20-0. All of these are rare accomplishments."
Harkins said his class overcame many challenges, and
was made stronger because of them. He encouraged his classmates to chase their dreams, take risks and never give up.
“Remember that failure is not the opposite of success, but rather a stepping stone to it," Harkins said.
Pachnik's advice to the Class of 2023?
“Keep track of your responsibilities, keep your promises, and never give up working towards your goals," the valedictorian said. "But don’t forget to relax, and take time to stop and smell the flowers."

"With a diverse workforce, we find we are able to collectively address diversity of opinions by eliciting views, perspectives and opinions that are different from our own so collectively we can be innovative and cover all kinds of angles of issues that no one of us alone would be able to consider," said Thomas Danehy, ACES executive director. "So hats off to our folks at ACES who lead the way in helping us, and me, to consider, think about and address diverse opinions so at the end of the day we make the best choices for the diverse communities for whom we work."

"I am so proud to be among all these other awardees tonight," Benson said. Suzio York Hill Companies, which supplies crushed stone for road building and other construction projects, received the chamber's Heritage Award, and Shining Star Awards went to Nutmeg Kettlecorn, Kamco Supply and C. Cowles & Co.
It was Wallingford Mayor William Dickinson Jr.'s last Chamber annual meeting as mayor. He announced earlier this year he wouldn't be seeking re-election after 40 years in office.
"You make a difference," he told the crowd. "Wallingford is the place it is because of you people, your employees, the commitments you have, the services you provide. You are part of the heart and soul of the community. Without you, it couldn't function the way it does."
North Haven First Selectman Mike Freda said he will miss Dickinson. "We have worked so closely through the years together on so many different projects,” he said. He also acknowledged the effect COVID-19 had on the community over the past several years, and the role businesses and nonprofit organizations have had in recovering from that. "In this room tonight we have businesses, we have school systems, we have a university, and many times in the past three years Mayor Dickinson and I have talked about how difficult it's getting in local government," Freda said. "Particularly coming out of the pandemic. What we see is a high level of anxiety in our communities. We
see people on edge. We see a certain fragmentation of our society because of those two years or so when people weren't able to do the things that they normally would do."
As local officials, they deal with the resulting mental health issues as best they can, Freda said. "Where you come into play for us in local government, you continue to help us tighten up some of
the frayed threads of the fabric of our community, and the fabric has become somewhat frayed because of the pandemic and the things we've gone through,” he said. “By helping us reweave those tattered threads, you're really helping us in local government, in addition to all the things you have helped us with down through the years with your businesses being part of our community."
