Bears entering homes at unprecedented rate By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff
Wildlife encounters have been spiking thus far this year, including as many bears entering peoples’ homes in June as all of 2019 combined. “Some of these interactions have been serious, including bears entering homes and gravely injuring both leashed and unleashed dogs,” says a statement from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. “Already in 2020 (through July 8) DEEP has received more reports of bears entering homes (25) than in any previous year and we are on track to triple the average number of home entries of 2018 and 2019.” Bears rarely harm humans and most local interactions with them involve damaged bird feeders and tipped over garbage containers and grills, said Cheshire Animal Control Officer April Leiler. When she does respond to a call, it’s usually to ensure that the bear doesn’t make it onto a major road like Route 10, where it can be struck by a vehicle. “We haven't had any real issues with bears. We do sometimes have them getting into unsecured trash and we do have them ripping down bird feeders,” she said.

Cheshire only has a few bears living in the area, Leiler said, but since it’s a more densely populated region they tend to be spotted more often. Residents should still be taking precautions to deter bears from approaching residential areas, however, and she walks callers through the recommendations DEEP has to remove attracSee Bears, A7

The Town of North Haven is asking residents to avoid flushing disposable hand wipes and other inappropriate items (disposable gloves, towels, etc.) into the town’s sewer lines and sanitary sewer system as people practice sanitation guidelines to combat the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Although many so-called “disposable” hand wipes are advertised as being safe for flushing, in reality, they regularly cause backups in the sanitary sewer system and contribute to buildups of foreign materials.
Town officials believe the recent buildup of sanitation wipes and gloves is connected to stepped-up efforts on the part of residents to comply with guidelines for avoiding the coronavirus. Pool’s open: Some things to know When will the pool be open? Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
How will social distancing be maintained? Changing areas will be marked and numbered that are at least six feet apart. All lockers will be secured closed and cannot be used.
Do I have to reserve a swim time? Yes. Do so at nhpool.getomnify.com. Reservations are for one hour. You must be a resident to make a reservation. If you do not have a pool pass, be prepared to show proof of residency at the pool and to purchase a daily pass. No out-of-town guests will be allowed.
There will be marked designated areas for patrons to leave their belongings while they swim. Nothing is to be left in the locker rooms.
When does my swim time start? When you get in the building. To maximize your time, it would be beneficial to arrive swim-ready. Will there be swimming lessons this summer? No. Because so much of swimming lessons are hands-on, it is impossible to social distance.
Staff will assist in keeping people safely distanced both in and out of the pool. Only swimmers will be allowed on deck, no spectators. Children 8 years and under must be accompanied by an adult. Parents not swimming with their children 9 years and older must be present at check-in. The pool will be divided into eight lanes. You are reserving a lane when you make your reservation. The only time more than one person can reserve the same lane is when more than one household member shares it. If you are bringing more than
four family members, you should make more than one reservation to prevent overcrowding. Do I have to wear a mask? You must wear a mask at all times except when you are in the pool or the shower. Will there be belts, fins and noodles for public use? No. Please bring what you need and want. What can I bring to use at the pool? You may bring non-inflated flotation devices like swim belts, noodles and kickboards. You may also bring swim fins, goggles, masks and snorkels. There will be no drinking fountain available, so bring a water bottle. How will the facility be sanitized? The locker rooms will be professionally cleaned and sanitized before the pool opens for the day. The facility will be closed down and the deck and locker rooms will be cleaned and sanitized again midday.

Bears tants like food outdoors, and even indoors in cases where bears are more of a hazard. “If you have the slider open and you’re making brownies and there’s just a screen between them and the deck and the kitchen they’re going to come in,” she said. The DEEP statement says that removing food that attracts bears is the most important step to making one’s home less attractive to scavengers like bears, since they have a strong sense of smell and can remember a food source for years. Not only will they return to homes where they were able to successfully find unsecured food in the past, over time bears will lose their fear of humans. Regularly cleaning trash bins, removing bird feeders between late March and November, avoiding leaving pet food outdoors and keeping dogs on a leash when outdoors, can all curtail interactions with bears. “Black bears should never be fed — either intentionally or unintentionally,” said Jenny Dickson, DEEP Wildlife Division director. “Bears that are attracted to homes by easily-accessible foods lose their fear of humans. Such bears spend more time in neighborhoods and near people, increasing risks to public safety, the likelihood of property damage, and the possibility that the bears may be hit and killed by vehicles.”
Carefree Living with Confidence
Now might be the perfect time to make your move to Elim Park!
“When we moved to Elim Park we found many new friends, who now have become family to us during the pandemic. We have united here. And, I realize that we could never have gone through this living in our previous home.” —Residents Jim and Roberta Sansone
According to an interactive map on the DEEP website, over 5,000 bear sightings in Connecticut have been reported thus far in 2020. Most of the sightings occur in the northwest of the state, with Avon, Farmington, Simsbury and Torrington each reporting over 200 sightings. Just one bear sighting has been reported in North Haven, while nearby, 58 have been reported in Hamden and 37 have been reported in Cheshire.

More to worry about? Officials warn of bug-borne illnesses By Philip Marcelo Associated Press
Sophia Garabedian had been dealing with a persistent fever and painful headache when her parents found her unresponsive in her bed one morning last fall. Doctors ultimately diagnosed the then-5-year-old Sudbury, Massachusetts, resident with eastern equine encephalitis, a rare but severe mosquito-borne virus that causes brain swelling. Garabedian survived the potentially fatal virus after about a month in Boston hospitals, but her parents
say her ordeal and ongoing recovery should be a warning as people take advantage of the outdoors this summer. “It’s been a rough year,” said David Garabedian, her father. “With any brain injury, it’s hard to tell. The damage is there. How she works through it is anyone’s guess.” As the coronavirus pandemic subsides for now in the hard-hit Northeast, public health officials in the region are warning about another potentially bad summer for EEE and other insect-borne illnesses. EEE saw an unexpected resurgence last summer
across 10 states: Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Tennessee. There were 38 human cases and 15 deaths from the virus, with many of the cases in Massachusetts and Michigan, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most years, the country sees just half a dozen cases of the virus in humans, the agency said. In Massachusetts and New Jersey, officials have already detected EEE in mosquitoes this year, the earliest on record in those states. There

In Michigan, an invasive mosquito known to transmit dengue, Zika and other tropical viruses has already been detected for the first time this season, said Mary Grace Stobierski, the state’s public health veterinarian.

People needn’t get too alarmed over an overpopulation. Small mammal populations tend to explode, then crash and burn. Such is life near the bottom of the food chain, where food supply ebbs and flows and chipmunks are easy prey for
Many New Englanders recall a similar spike in squirrel populations in 2018. The boom-and-bust cycle was punctuated by a memorable number of road kills. “We’ve never seen anything like that. That was a once in a lifetime event,” Webb said.

Ticks are also expected to be out earlier and in larger numbers this season because of the relatively mild winter, warned Aaron Bernstein, a pediatrician at Boston Children’s Hospital and a director at Harvard’s School of Public Health. That could mean more cases of debilitating Lyme disease and other tick-related illnesses for local health care systems already feeling the pressure of responding to the coronavirus, he said. “Some of the people going into the woods more now might not be experienced with how to protect themselves in the forest, and that’s a concern,” he said.
The CDC has offered states additional help with mosquito testing this season as the coronavirus pandemic has overwhelmed state public health offices, said Candice Hoffmann, an agency spokeswoman. Officials in eight states and the District of Columbia have so far taken up the offer: Maryland, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Vermont, Maine, Florida and Arizona.

In Michigan, where six of that state’s 10 cases of EEE last year proved fatal, officials this summer have launched a pilot program to improve the state’s response to mosquito-borne illnesses.
Ned Walker, a medical entomologist at Michigan State University heading up the effort, said the goal is to create the kind of regular mosquito surveillance system already in place in Massachusetts and elsewhere to better predict and prepare for disease outbreaks.

In Connecticut, officials have boosted the number of testing sites for mosquitoes in its high risk eastern portion, according to Philip Armstrong, a virologist with the state Department of Environmental Sciences.

Officials say people should avoid the evening and early morning hours when mosquitoes are most active, use bug spray and wear long clothing where possible when outdoors.
During last year’s EEE outbreak, the CDC provided about $700,000 in emergency funding and technical assistance to Rhode Island, Indiana, Michigan, and Massachusetts on top of roughly $18 million it provided to states for annual vectorborne disease surveillance, Hoffmann said.
