Animals

Helping the community

From A1

“I want to create trust with the community,” Jorge Orellana said. “One big thing we’ve done is restoration in the community.”

Admission to the Rally Against Animal Abuse & Neglect is $5. All funds raised by Bikers Against Animal Cruelty go to improve the lives of domestic, ownerless animals that have been abused or neglected. HomePro RX in the Lawrence M. Biller Plaza at 154 State St. in North Haven. Dave Zajac, Record-Journal

HomePro RX From A1

“I got into this business because when I was younger, my grandfather was a cabinet furniture maker in Ecuador,” Jorge Orellana said. “I used to go to job sites with him.” Starting the business was difficult, Jorge Orellana recalls. At a young age, he had to learn how to run a business and build connections. “Nothing ever comes easy and even now I’m still learning what I can improve on,” he said.

Flavio Cabrera, marketing manager and videographer at HomePro RX, has been with the company for about six months. It is his first time working for a construction company. “I knew I wanted to work for this company after hearing Jorge built it from the ground up,” Cabrera said. “I love it because every day I’m learning.” The company does big and small projects throughout New Haven county, with clients in Meriden, Wallingford, North Haven, and New Haven.

Restoration, he said, is common among the Latino community. When a house catches on fire, a tree falls during a storm or water damages a home, many don’t know how to resolve the issue with their insurance due to language barriers. “I enjoy helping the Latino community because when I came, my parents were firsttime home buyers and they didn’t understand anything about ownership, taxes, and insurance claims,” Jorge Orellana said. “They bought into it and I realized that I needed to help clients through that process.” In addition to restoration, HomePro RX does remodeling and building from scratch. To get in contact with HomePro RX, call 203-535-0599.

Residents asked to voluntarily conserve water Citizen report

On July 14, the State of Connecticut declared a Stage 2 drought condition throughout all eight counties. Moving to Stage 2 means that drought conditions were emerging statewide and residents and businesses should take measures to minimize future drought impact. “Residents should be mindful of their water consumption and take sensible steps to reduce impacts on other water uses and on the environment,” Gov. Ned Lamont said. “We must begin early steps now to mitigate the potential for harm should the drought become prolonged.” The Stage 2 drought declaration prompted the Regional Water Authority to ask customers to voluntarily reduce water use by 10 percent. Less rainfall and rising summer temperatures have a compounding effect, and taking steps to conserve water voluntarily can help.

Join us for a FREE virtual class

“While we currently have an adequate supply of water in our reservoirs, our request to customers to voluntarily reduce their water use by 10% not only supports the governor’s appeal, and protects our vital supply of clean, safe drinking water, but it also helps consumers save money on their water bill,” said Larry Bingaman, RWA President & CEO.

Water-saving tips The South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority shared some simple things residents can do to converse water : Check for any dripping faucets or running toilets. A leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water per year. The average leaky toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water per day. That’s over 6,000 gallons of water a month.

HARVEST TIME

The North Haven Junior Garden Club gathered recently to work on the "Garden of Eatin" at United Faith Methodist Church. Club members staked tomato plants, sprayed the leaves of the eggplant and beans with a special soap to ward off bugs, and did some light weeding. Also, the young gardeners picked zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers and string beans, which they brought home. Photos by Cindy Golia

Water From A9

A bath typically uses up to 70 gallons of water, whereas a five-minute shower will use only 10-25 gallons, depending on the efficiency of your showerhead. So shower to save water. Turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth can save as much as four gallons of water. If you brush your teeth in the morning and at night, that adds up to saving 200 gallons of water a month. The same is true when you wash your hands.

When cleaning dishes, scrape your dirty dishes into the trash and then put them into the dishwasher. The average dishwasher uses six gallons of water per cycle; more efficient dishwashers use four gallons per cycle. A running faucet uses about two gallons per minute. Wash only full loads of clothes. Older top-loading machines use 40 gallons of

water to wash a full load. Today's newer standard models use 27 gallons, and more efficient Energy Star washers use 14 gallons per wash. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean patios, sidewalks, and driveways. Water flows from a hose at about six gallons of water a minute. If it takes 30 minutes to clean a patio or deck, using a broom saves 500 gallons of water. Wash your car at a car wash. Washing your car at home can use between 40 and 140 gallons of water. Washing your car at a car wash where water is cleaned and recycled uses about 15 gallons of fresh water for each wash. Use only non-potable water to water your lawn and gardens. Use a bucket to catch extra water when you run the water before a shower. If you take a bath, use the bath water to water trees, shrubs, and non-edible plants (not your vegetable or herb gardens).

Grants to address health inequities awarded This month, the Connecticut Health Foundation awarded over $330,000 in grants to eight health organizations statewide to address health inequities. Formerly based in North Haven, the Connecticut Association of School-Based Health Centers is one of the grant recipients. CASBHC works to establish and maintain physical, dental and mental health clinics inside schools for K-12 students at no out-of-pocket cost.

“We are an outpatient clinic inside a school,” said Melanie Wilde-Lane, executive director of the Connecticut Wilde-Lane Association of SchoolBased Health Centers, which moved to Hartford last year. The clinics are staffed by an advanced nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant who can diagnose, prescribe medications and provide follow-up care. The CASBHC

Party primaries are Aug. 9 Citizen report

Voters casting absentee ballots in the upcoming Aug. 9 primary need to get ballot applications soon if they are relying on the mail. Connecticut does not have noexcuse absentee voting but lawmakers did loosen re-

strictions earlier this year to include caregivers and commuters. The last day to pick up or request an absentee ballot is Aug. 8. All ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. on election day.

staff works in tandem with the school staff, such as nurses and social workers. Wilde-Lane estimates CASBHC has 93 full-service locations and 225 single-service sites, which can be for primary care, mental health or dental health. While all North Haven public schools have school-based health centers, Wilde-Lane said that many of the other towns may have mobile dental services. She said that providing medical services in a school setting gives greater access to healthcare.

“We meet the kids where they’re at,” Wilde-Lane explained. “A lot of our centers are situated right inside the hub, which is the school nurse’s office or the support team office area — so we’re able to be right there to see the student in crisis and to be available immediately. That’s the key — there’s no wait time.” The school-based health clinics also offer telehealth for both physical and mental health. Klarides draws conservative criticism ahead of primary

Since 1973

49 Years’ Experience

Fairfield, who ran for governor in 2018, both oppose abortion rights and further restrictions on gun owners.

When the Connecticut Republican Party endorsed former state House Minority Leader Themis Klarides for the U.S. Senate this spring, the social moderate was viewed by many past and present party leaders as the GOP’s best chance in years to defeat veteran Democratic U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal.

“There is a contrast here,” Levy said, when comparing herself to Klarides. “And I’m running in a Republican primary, not a Democrat primary. And her views on abortion are more suited to running in a Democrat primary, are more like Senator Blumenthal’s.”

But in the months since the state convention, Klarides, who supports both abortion and gay rights, and has voted for various gun control measures while serving in the state’s General Assembly, has come under fire from the conservative wing of the party for her stances, including accusations she’s not a true Republican.

Lumaj, however, referred to himself as the only “unwavering conservative” among the three candidates, criticizing Levy for previously supporting abortion rights. He said Republicans in Connecticut have lost statewide races in the past because they nominated candidates who “were afraid to be a Republican.”

More of that criticism was lodged Tuesday night, when Klarides appeared in the first GOP Senate debate with her two conservative challengers in the upcoming Aug. 9 primary. Leora Levy of Greenwich, the state’s Republican National Committeewoman, and attorney Peter Lumaj of

But Klarides stressed that a candidate with such conservative positions won’t win in Connecticut, where the largest voting block is made up of unaffiliated voters, followed by Democrats and then Republicans. There’s also strong support in the See Klarides, A16

Max Reiss, Lamont’s spokesperson, leaving the administration

Klarides From A13

state for abortion rights, a key issue in this year’s election after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. A recent Quinnipiac University Poll showed the vast majority of Connecticut voters think abortion should be legal in all cases. “We all agree that Dick Blumenthal needs to go and we all also understand that I’m the best candidate to do that,” Klarides said. “I won 11 elections when my opponents have won no other elections. And I have the best record to win an election in Connecticut, and that’s the goal here.” The verbal jabs in the GOP Senate primary election have come primarily from Levy, a first-time candidate whose campaign manager this month called Klarides “a Democrat in disguise” in a campaign memo. Besides noting her support for abortion rights and state gun control measures, he criticized her for acknowledging she didn’t vote for former President Donald Trump in 2020. “How can you trust an entrenched member of the Hartford Swamp when they do not even support the Republican candidate and our values? She will only bring her brand of insider politics to Washington, DC,” wrote Christopher Velazco. “Nothing will change.” Levy loaned her campaign more than $1 million and is running a TV ad attacking Klarides that warns, “after 22 years in office, Themis Klarides isn’t one of us.”

Lamont praised his departing communications director, a former TV reporter who previously covered the Democratic administration for WVIT-TV, for his dedication, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Klarides, in turn, has focused most of her attention on Blumenthal, who in May registered a 45% job approval rating, his lowest in a Quinnipiac Poll since taking office in 2011.

ing in a recent tweet that affordability and inflation are the top issues in Connecticut and “Biden and Blumenthal just don’t get it,” lumping the senator with President Joe Biden.

Reiss managed much of the state’s public outreach efforts and became a familiar voice for residents who tuned in daily for Lamont’s COVID news conferences.

Reiss previously worked as a TV and radio reporter in Alabama, Missouri and elsewhere. His final day as Lamont’s chief spokesperson is Aug. 5.
